The “Cheddar“ Letter Your Fox Valley/Central Wisconsin Chapter Newsletter
Happy New Year! Now that the Holiday
season has passed, I have started to
think about my New Year’s resolution…
improve my leadership skills. If anyone
is still looking for their own resolution, or
would like to trade one in, this is a good
candidate. Being a good leader has
nothing to do with the number of direct
reports you have, or how many years
you’ve been at your current job. Anyone
can be a leader in their organization,
community, or family.
At the last IIA Leadership Academy, one
of the North American Board members
presented his Top 10 Tips for Leaders.
I would like to discuss three of those as
examples. While they may seem obvi-
ous, we sometimes forget!
Set a good example: There are many
different ways to set a good example
within your department and organi-
zation, which will hopefully encour-
age others to follow your lead. For
example, complete tasks in the
timeframe originally promised, re-
spond to inquiries in a timely man-
ner, pick up the phone or meet with
someone in person instead of send-
ing another email, and follow corpo-
rate policies.
Learn from the past: Everyone makes
mistakes. The key is to not dwell on
that mistake, but identify what went
wrong, what you can do different
next time, and then implement
those changes. Also, share what
you have learned so others do not
make the same mistake.
Never stop improving: It is very easy to
just keep doing what has been work-
ing. However, the world of Internal
Audit is always changing, and so
should we. For example, take a
training course to learn more about
emerging audit topics, or look for
ways to use new audit technologies
to improve or streamline audit steps.
Whatever your resolution is for 2017,
I wish you luck!
Thank you,
Cara Newman, President

On November 29, we held a joint
student night with the Heart of
Wisconsin Chapter of the Insti-
tute of Management Accountants
(IMA) at the University of Wiscon-
sin-Stevens Point. Four IIA mem-
bers and five IMA members par-
ticipated in a speed networking
event in which 16 UWSP stu-
dents spent about 5 minutes
with each professional before ro-
tating to another professional.
Topics discussed ranged from a
typical day on the job to career
paths and possible internships at
the professional’s employer.
The students in attendance
ranged from Sophomores to
2nd year Seniors. Based on
the survey responses, 100%
of the students indicated that
the event was very beneficial
to those in attendance and
would consider attending a
similar event in the future.
If you would like to volunteer
for similar opportunities,
please contact Melissa at

Gregory Duckert of Virtual Gov-
ernance Institute presented his
MIS Training Institute’s program
on “Building an Outcome Centric
Continuous / Continual Risk As-
sessment Model” at Liberty Hall
in Kimberly on Thursday, Novem-
ber 10, 2016. Twenty-six were
in attendance for the day.
Mr. Duckert challenged each of
us to think outside of our normal
box of using an annual risk as-
sessment to determine what to
audit and then taking the next
year to audit the areas that were
identified months prior.
Mr. Duckert challenged the
group to see that developing
five to seven Key Risk Indica-
tors (KRI’s) for each area of
the company and monitoring
those KRI’s on a regular basis
will help audit monitor the
company’s ability to achieve
its strategic objectives and
help us know where internal
audit can bring the most value
to the company now. This ap-
proach helps identify critical
processes that are failing and
help internal audit add more
value to the company.

Ethics and Roundtable
To On November 30th, our Chap-
ter engaged Chris Bauer, PhD
from Bauer Ethics Seminar to
present a training session on
business ethics as well as facili-
tate a round table discussion on
ethics and hot topics in internal
audit.
Chris contends that better ethics
build stronger and more resilient
departments, divisions and com-
panies. And, companies simply
cannot afford an ethics problem -
there is too much at stake. The
financial, legal and public rela-
tions consequences can be cata-
strophic. The direct costs alone
can be hundreds of thousands of
dollars and more. And that's be-
fore the losses related to your
damaged reputation.
Attendees learned effective skills
for dealing with those potential
problems when they see them,
the essentials of confronting
others on ethics concerns,
who is most at risk to violate
the ethics code and why, how
to keep the ethics code clearly
in mind in the course of day-to-
day decision making.
Chris gave the group ethical
situations and gave the partici-
pants an opportunity to dis-
cuss what the decision to be
made and the ethical action to
take to in that situation. Partic-
ipants found the exercise to be
interesting and thought pro-
voking. Chris also provided
some entertaining commen-
tary (see flowchart below).
Overall, the attendees of the
session had positive feedback
on the event, the presenter
and the roundtable. Thank
you to those who attended and
participated in this session!

Topic: Calculate the Last Day of
the Month
Issue: Can’t remember how
many days are in a month?
Solution: Go to the first of the
next month and subtract 1.
Explanation: Using a formula
that points to a date in cell D2,
for example, add one month and
subtract 1 day to get the last day
of the month for the month refer-
enced in cell D2.
Formula:
=DATE(YEAR(D2),MONTH(D2)
+1,1)-1
