Some Shed News

や や やややEDITORIAL╆や

We are always overjoyed when we receive contributions from members, but this issue we have been even more overjoyed due to the fact that we have both been hovering on 酉 death 瀞 s doorstep 瀞 with the dreaded flu that seems to have plagued people this year. I thought mine was bad enough, but I think Niel suffered more, as his happened during the time when his new diabetes regime was begun. Indeed it was no fun at all, and I was very thankful that I have a ready supply of frozen soup, stewed fruit and half meals in the freezer. It made me think yet again how fortunate we are to be living now and not in the dim dark past where ailments such as flu simply ripped through the population leaving death and destruction in it 瀞 s wake. So love engines and their restoration, but just be grateful not to live during the time when they would have been the main source of power, and when medi-cation had not been invented for the assistance of those suffering illnesses such as ours and much worse. Best wishes for the coming months and all the activities you intend to pursue.

The school buses have kept rolling in during the past couple of months as well as many coach tours from around the Melbourne Metro area bringing many visi-tors to the property. George Smith on some occasions had to be a one man band , as holidays and illness has kept some of his normal crew away. Last month the rains came down and water entered the shed but did not reach to the carpet. Lewis and Hugh have done some modifi-cations to one of the wall panels so that a portion can be removed to allow the large engines easy access. Many people do lots of unseen work for YVMPS and on behalf of the membership I say many many thanks. BUS TRIP Our Secretary, Alan, is in the process of organizing an-other two day bus trip of country sheds. April/May next year is being looked at. Watch this space for further up dates

APPOLOGY” In each of the June and August Newsletters I have incorrectly spelt John McIver’s name with an ‘O’. And I also note that the TOMM magazine No 139 has the same problem. Sorry John Niel

Kerry Anne Shepherd is our Member of the Month I was Born 10th January 1948 at Carlton and was immediately put up for adoption where I lived with a wonderful family having three sisters and a brother. I was not told of the adoption until I was nearly fifty years old .It turned out that I have three half sisters; one of whom made contact with my adoptive mother looking for me. We have met and become great friends and I was also able to meet my birth mother before she died. I married Alan on 1st February 1969 at Pascoe Vale and we moved into our first home in Gladstone Park on returning from our hon-eymoon. We have five children, twins David and Mark,

Brett, Tracey and Bronwyn. Our eight Grandchildren are Naomie, Tahlia , twins, Angus & Ethan Sierra, Nicholas , Johnathon and Goldie. I attended St Fidelis’ school Coburg and later St Aloysius College Nth. Melbourne. My first employment was with Associated Dental in Spring Street Melbourne, where I first met Alan and we worked together for many years. My next major job was with Equity Trustees until starting a family. When Alan be-came interested in engines and joined YVMPS I became interested and came along for the company. When he goes to rallies I am happy to check out the Craft markets hopeful of adding to my collection of Swarovski Crystal orna-ments and figurines (Below is some information found on Google about the Crys-tal) A Highlight of my life I must say has been getting married and having a great family and lovely grandchildren. We have also enjoyed a couple of trips overseas going to Germany and Japan. Swarovski (/sw系呉r系fski/ sworr-OFF-skee, German pronunciation: [sva呉r継fski]) is an Austrian producer of crystal headquartered in Wattens, Austria. The company is split into three major industry areas: the Swarovski Crystal Business, that primarily produces crystal jewellery and accessories; Swarovski Optik, which produces optical instruments such as telescopes and binoculars; and Tyrolit, a leading manufacturer of grinding, saw-ing, drilling, and dressing tools, as well as a supplier of tools and machines. Today, Swarovski Crystal Business is the highest grossing business with a global reach of approximately 2,800 stores in around 170 countries, more than 27,000 employees, and a revenue of about 2.6 billion euros (in 2016)

YVMPS NEWS PAGE 2 Page 4 PAGE 4 Wedderburn Rally 9th& 10th September 2017.

We had a good trip up on the Friday with no hassles and sunshine all the way even though Melbourne was having rain. On our arrival we were met by Don and Allison Wright who had re-served our location for YVMPS exhibitors. We also met up again with Katrina and Neil Harvey from Ararat , who we met at the National Rally earlier in the year It was great to meet up with them again. Kim & Norm Dalziel from the Emerald club also show with us and support our group a lot. We had a good display of engines. Barry Thomas had the McCormick Deering and grissler, also a 3HP Moffatt Virtue with a generator, next was Don Butcher with his 3HP Lister, and then Jamie with a 5HP Lister Jun-ior, next to him was Norm Dalziel with a 5HP Tangye and generator set by W. Canning & Co., then Don Wright had his 4HP Austral Model G. and generator, which they all lit up for the night show of lights. It looked spectacular It was also great to see Maree and Tony Koolen, who are in our club, make the effort to come so far, as Maree’s health hasn’t been 100% lately, but we are glad to say that she is improving. Tony was showing his 2HP Pilot and the Wing engines; his latest venture being a MK 3 Agra which he was using to move engines and things around. Further down the compound was Benn Wilkinson with Ellery & Malachi with their engines of a 3 ½ HP Lister Junior, an R&T and an Ampolian, with some memorabilia. We feel numbers were down a bit due to the fact that there was a golf competition on all the week and some people who regularly attend couldn’t get their usual ac-commodation. On Friday evening ten of us went to the local hotel for dinner, which was great but quite late due to the large num-ber of people there. We had Keith Moar visit us on the Saturday, then on Sunday Kerry & Alan Shepherd and Barry’s mother all came for the day. There was no shortage of food over the weekend as we all took plenty and . Don W cooked sausages for lunch each day. The evening meal put on by the Wedderburn Club was thoroughly en-joyed on Saturday night. The sun shone brightly all weekend and we all had a fantastic time.

YVMPS NEWS PAGE 3 PAGE 5 Another Wedderburn – Another Year - Another Challenge This year for Wedderburn I gave myself a couple of challenges – get there before dark on the Friday so I had time to set up tent and off load, then put an engine and generator on a new transport for the trip. That was the real challenge – well time management may be my real challenge. Back in 1996 when Dad was getting involved in stationary engines he purchased a Moffat Virtue engine with gen-erator, along with a second one to restore and return to John Linton of Serpentine. In 1998 this motor was restored and with some help from other engine restorers he was able to rewire the generator. He mounted it on a frame I had used for one of my engines, which I had replaced. The frame had McCormick Deering binder transport wheels , which made moving around in small spaces a bit of a challenge. I had some cast wheels I got from Ray Stone, so I thought a new transport would make moving the engine around easier. . The following photos show the steps in my challenge, starting with picking the engine up from mum’s and you can see the transport it was mounted on. Then came the build of the new transport – my welding skills are not great but it holds together. Welded frame and axles, including a basic turntable. I like to have timber between the engine and steel –

don’t ask why, just one of my peculiari-ties. . My neighbours would have got the impression of aliens arriving as I was welding outside in the early eve-ning hours. One of the minor chal-lenges I had was with the wheels; they had been machined by my neighbour who was a maintenance fitter for Clip-

sal and he did a very rough job, so not having a lathe resulted in having to use a round file and carefully took out rough spots. The following photo is Thursday night before Wedderburn shifting the engine from one transport to the other. I have an engine crane which would have made life easy, but is still in Dad’s garage. I resorted to one of the oldest technologies which made my wife laugh. I used some rollers which I believe the ancient Egyptians invented or at least per-fected to use to move big and heavy objects. . Hopefully the neighbours weren’t too upset as I finished about 9:00, and then started packing the ute with International LB (Pig) and Interna-tional Grister. Come Friday morning, it was then a matter of getting up and final packing of the engine in the trailer, and roping it all in. It was a good trip up, popping in to see Mum on the way and picking up an engine for Paul Connor. We arrived and was helped unload by Butchers & Wrights Incorporated. – thanks. The following photos show the engine back at Wedderburn where it has been a num-ber of times in the past, and running in the evening with lights blazing as part of the twilight rally. This was the first time I had started it without Dad I had swung the crank handle a few times for him, but this time I ended having to go and have a read of the manual for a moment as once it started it kept popping back. Turns out I had the choke set the wrong way round, starting it without choke and running it with choke closed. Once I sorted that it ran well for the weekend. Next time out I will have to take a few of the 32 volt items such as fan, drill and even a toaster. May need to make toast to go with Alison’s sausages. It was a great weekend. We were spoilt with lunches by Don and Alison, and ate a good feed on Saturday night. There was quite a variety of engines around the compounds, and a massive number of cars. The Wedderburn club started a big two cylinder Rus-ton Hornsby – which ran for the first time in a

number of years. By the end of the weekend they had it running quite smoothly. Walking around was good to catch up friends that I have got to know over the years, and .Mum came over from Heathcote for the day on Sunday Sunday saw us all pack up and head home. Another great weekend out with engine folks. Thanks to those who help set up/pack up and a big thank you to the Wedderburn club. Barry T. .
