He is currently serving a sister Southern Baptist congregation in another small west Texas community. They love him deeply and will be heart-broken to loose their Worship Minister and friend. (By the way it will be Michael’s 32nd birthday so we’ll want to make it an extra- special evening for him.) Michael and Paula Beth are both graduates of Ouachita Baptist University. Michael received his Bachelors of Church Music Degree and Paula Beth was also a music major with concentration on piano and flute. Paula Beth is currently serving alongside of Michael as their church pianist. Michael has been involved in ministry since 2001, serving in churches in Ar- kansas, Illinois, and Texas. I join in the excitement and enthusiasm of the Music Minister Search Team in sharing with you the announcement that God has led us to the man we feel He has ordained to be the Minister of Worship and Media for us here at First Baptist Church of Ham-lin. After much prayer, study, and deliberation we have come to a unanimous agreement that this is the man God has chosen for us to bring before the family of believers here at FBCH.

I feel confident you are going to love Michael and his wife — Paula Beth — and their precious little girl Lucy is going to steal your heart. It may seem odd that we are not sharing our candidates last name — but we want to protect his current ministry until he has completed his Easter Musical at his present church — which is located not all that far from here. He is currently serving a sister Southern Baptist congregation in another small west Texas community. They love him deeply and will be heart-broken to loose their Worship Minister and friend. We’ll give you his full name and current place of service on Sunday, April 4th.

We want to give you an opportunity to get to know this family. On Saturday — April 10th at 6:00 p.m. we will have a meet-and-greet fellowship here at FBCH. Bring your favorite finger-foods and come visit with Michael and Paula Beth and get to know them. They’ll lead us in a brief time of worship and answer any ques-tions you might have about their ministry call, experience and convictions. (By the way — it will be Michael’s 32nd birthday — so we’ll want to make it an extra-special evening for him.)

Michael and Paula Beth are both graduates of Ouachita Baptist University. Michael received his Bachelors of Church Music Degree and Paula Beth was also a music major with concentration on piano and flute. Paula Beth is currently serving alongside of Michael as their church pianist.

Michael has been involved in ministry since 2001, serving in churches in Ar-kansas, Illinois, and Texas. He has expressed a sincere love for ALL forms of Christian music — including the treasured hymns of the faith as well as the praise and worship choruses favored by many of the younger generation. His resume in-cludes these thoughts on Worship:

After more that three years at the Primera Mision I have listened as the congregation has sung praises and worship with all their hearts. I have noticed how many have had trou-ble being in tune, in key, or in rhythm. And I say this with all my love, but from the musician perspective, I wish that they could all sing in tune and in rhythm. I have had singing sessions and I have given them the key. Even with the piano many still have difficulty.

But one day the Lord stopped me in my tracks and said to me, “This isn’t for you. It is for Me. I hear their voices as they sing from their hearts. It is very sweet and that, to Me, is being in perfect tune.”

I began to think about this and of how many worship services around our nation today have become “shows.” People come to be entertained. Congregations have become audiences. A song is too long or not the one they liked. There was too much pause, it was off tune or the music was too loud or not loud enough. I’ve heard some say, “I don’t think the service went well today.” While others have said, “ I didn’t really enjoy it.” On and on. Some have even told me that they have not come back to visit our mission because we didn’t have an accordion, guitars a key board or other instruments or because the song leader was “tone deaf.” I am first to say that I love musical instruments and it does add to the worship and praise we give God. But it shouldn’t keep us from going to worship with others of the same faith if there is no music. Why do we come to a service? We come to worship God together in one accord and one purpose. It isn’t a sing-a-long. We are to exalt Jesus. To enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise. It doesn’t mean in one key, but to come together in one spirit, of one mind, assembling ourselves to give God the praise and worship and to encourage one another. Remember the song and worship is not for us, it is for God Almighty. And what God does for us in return is that we are refreshed, refueled and ready to go out and share Him with others. In our worship to Him the singing helps us through the storms in life and when we don’t feel like it is a “sacrifice of praise” and that will mean all the more to Him. So this Palm and Easter Sunday and all the rest, go to encounter Jesus. Go join in with the congregation or “house of prayer” of your choice. Give Him all the glory, honor, and praise that your heart can give, with or without music, in key or not, with the song you like or dislike — but in one heart let your praises be known to Him.

The best definition of worship I have heard is by Dr. Bruce Leafbald. He said, “Worship is communion with God in which believers , by grace center their mind’s attention and their heart’s affection on the Lord, humbly glorifying God in response to His greatness and His Word.” When this happens, we realize that it is not at all about us, but about the Father. It is about giving Him the praise He de-serves. Worshipping God for who He is, and for what He has done.” Much like Samuel, in His search for the second king to rule over Israel, was led specifically to David — we, your search team and ministerial staff — prayed and asked God to show us to the man He has chosen to lead us forward in our Worship Ministry. We feel collectively that Michael is that man. Come and share in the de-cision that is before us as the family of believers at FBCH. The church will vote on this matter on April 11th following the morning worship service. Pray and respond according to the leadership of our Lord.

I Love You!

S tudent M inistry N ews Associate Pastor Minster to Students

Just a quick word of thanks to all of our volunteers that help with The Student Ministry. Each week we feed about 60 -70 students, and I just want to say thanks to the many volunteers who help prepare and serve the meals. Sharon Rodgers coordinates that ministry for us so if you get a chance tell her, “thank you,” as well.

Over the past several months I’ve been working on the Church website in my spare time, and I finally was able to get it up to date. The Student Ministry page is now fully func-tional! With the addition of our new Worship Pastor you will be seeing more changes in the months to come. I am very ex-cited about the website being a tool we all use to encourage, inform, and share what God is doing in the lives of those who attend FBC Hamlin.

On the Student Ministry page you will find two links to free family devotions. One is “Heart Connex” a semi-weekly family devotion. You may have heard me talk about this one in the a past. Its written by Richard Ross and is very easy to use. You can search specific topics on this site. The second corresponds with our Sunday School material. Both are very good resources that are well written and easy for everyone to use.

What if we as parents took one night a week while sitting around the dinner table and talked about what God is trying to teach us on Sundays? To be honest with you, in my home I have become very lazy in doing this, but it’s something I want to start doing again. Actually, I have to start

doing again. I can’t leave it up to our Sunday School teach-ers and our Pastor to be the only ones pouring spiritual truth into the lives of my family. I pray you will join me. I know our schedules are very busy, but I believe we must make this a priority. I know God will honor our prayer if we ask Him to give us the strength and the time to teach His words to our families. If you need any help at all navigating through this process or just ideas on how to even get started please call me—I would be more than happy to help.
