Landcom Peninsula Park Art Workshop 1

Students from Jellybeans and Eagles designed and createdbalsa boats under the direction of artist, Jade Oakley and herteam as part of the art workshop last Thursday. Some of thesefantastic creations may be cast into metal and will form part ofthe art installations in the new Peninsula Park.

The session began with a series of fast paced and entertainingstories about the early history of the Parramatta River.Storyteller Jo Henwood kept students spellbound as theylearned of the ways the Parramatta River had been used overtime. Jo offered our students an interactive and immersiveexperience as she brought history to life for them.

After the storytelling, students were completely engaged indesigning their balsa boats. These ranged from simple sailingboats to cargo vessels and even gun boats. The concentrationand engagement on the faces of every student was evidentthroughout the two hours of the workshop.

Workshop 2 will involve students from Jellybeans, Eagles andSharks and will feature three hands on sessions and storiesfrom an Aboriginal educator to give students an insight intothe way Aboriginal people lived in harmony with the ParramattaRiver and incorporated its unique flora and fauna. Into their dailylives.

Jellybeans and Diving Eagles lovepublishing their writing!

On Thursday the 8th of November we had special guests fromLandcom including a special storyteller named Joe who told usabout history of our local area including the Parramatta River. 3Artists also came to school so they can help us create artworksfor the local community park. The storyteller told us about Peterthe English boy who found a lucky pebble that helped to savehis life. We played roles, wore costumes and hats and usedprops to make the stories come to life. The artists helped usto design our own boats similar to those used in the past. Weused wood, glue and sand paper. Firstly I took a floor for myboat and I took 2 sticks for two sails. Secondly I made flags, decorations and a circle to control. Thirdly, I made a personwho sat in the boat. Lastly I needed to wait till it dries. I createdmy boat like that because in the past there were more sail boatsthan other types of boats.

Jellybeans

I really enjoyed listening to the storyteller Joe who told us astory that had happened at Parramatta River in the past. Therewas an English sailor named Peter who one day, came acrossParramatta and met someone called Manu. He gave him ashave and suddenly, he fell in the water! So Manu jumped in hiscanoe they called it a Kiwa back then. So Manu swam in theKiwa and pulled Peter the English sailor out of the water. Underthe water he found a pebble. Now this wasn’t any old pebbleit was a lucky pebble. You must be asking why it is so lucky.Because it saved his life. So a few years later they took off &

Jellybeans

On Thursday the 8th of November the Jellybeans and the DivingEagles participate in the Landcom art project. The purpose ofthe landcom art project is to involve us in designing the localcommunity park. We helped by designing our own boats todisplay in the park. We made wooden miniature designs of ourboat and soon some of our boats will be a metal, big replicas inthe park!

First, we met a storyteller named Joe who told us fantasticAboriginal stories. It all had one thing in common, the good luckpebble. The stories were true and happened in The ParramattaRiver. We heard a story about Peter the Sailor, a Convict anda lady finally three worker kids and the three orphans. We alsoplayed roles from the past.

After that we built wooden boats that sailed in the ParramattaRiver. One of our boats is going to be built in metal and addedin the park! For me I loved every single part of the project. I can’twait to see what they are planning next!

We were told that in a few years, just outside the back gate, the landcom community are going to build a park! Next Joethe story teller, told us a story. It was a story about a boycalled Manu, not only did we listen to the story, we also got toact out roles for example: there were three aunties called Sriya(me), Cherish and Mika. We wore stickers for when the threeaunties got a disease called smallpox. Then we listened to astory where we learnt a special dance called “Heel and toe”.

Farm shows

Kindergarten were sitting at the edge of their seats whilewatching some of the exciting shows at the farm. These showsincluded cracking a whip, watching a sheep dog herd somesheep and sheep shearing. When asked which was theirfavourite show they simply could not decide! During writing,Kindergarten brainstormed and wrote sentences that includedpronouns, conjunctions, strong verbs and interestingadjectives. Read through the speech bubbles to see what eachstudent expressed about the farm shows.

Support Unit Changes for 2019

For 2019, the Support Unit will again have 3 classes but one ofour AU/IO (Autism with a moderate intellectual disability) classeswill be “re-badged” as an AU (Autism) class. This means we willnow have two classes for students with autism (AU) and oneclass for students with autism and/or a moderate intellectualdisability (AU/IO). No currently enrolled student will be affectedby this change but we are delighted that we will be able to offermore places to students with autism. If you have any concernsabout this change, please contact either Mrs Wheatley or MsManousaridis for further details.

Special Religious Education and SpecialEducation in Ethics 2019

The Education Act 1990 states 'in every government school, time is to be allowed for the religious education of childrenof any religious persuasion'. Special Education in Ethics (SEE)can be offered as a secular alternative to Special ReligiousEducation (SRE). At Wentworth Point we currently offer classesfor Protestant, Catholic and Hindu students. In 2019 we hopeto also offer classes for our Islamic students and for thosestudents wishing to do the Ethics curriculum. Students alsoattend “non-scripture” at the request of parents or where “noreligion” has been indicated on the enrolment form.

In order to provide these opportunities we need parents orcommunity members to volunteer to take the SRE or SEEclasses on Thursdays from 11.40-12.10. If you are interested intaking either an Islamic class or an Ethics class please contactthe front office to indicate your interest. Interested parents willbe put in touch with the relevant organisation to organisetraining and certification. SRE classes and SEE classes aretaught by volunteers and teachers are not paid. Classroomteachers from Wentworth Point supervise all SRE and SEEclasses.
