MANDOLYNN HILL FARMOPEN HOUSE 2015

Following the Dubai InternationalArabian Races sponsored fixture at LoneStar Park in Texas [see Pamela Burton'sreport page 36], racegoers were invitedto extend their trip by visiting Dr Mickeyand Michelle Morgan's Mandolynn HillFarm for their annual Open Houseevent.

Speaking afterwards Michelle Morganexplained further. “This is something wedo every year at the farm, usually it isconnected with our stallion stakes races, however this year we decided to link itwith the DIAR races. It was fantastic thatthey sponsored four stakes races at

Lone Star Park.

"We had a showing of all the stallions, plus bar-b-que and live music. It wasgreat event because there were peoplethere that hadn't seen each other for awhile, so they were able to catch upand we had a good mix of racing andnon-racing visitors.

"I think it was a relaxing and fun day foreveryone and it was a real honour forthe Shadwell Team to come visit theirstallions and the farm.”

HH Sheikha Fatima bint MubarakConference for Racing and TrainingAbu Dhabi 2015

This year’s Racing and TrainingConference brought together 600racing professionals from around theglobe to share their knowledge andideas about the sport under the bannerof the HH Sheikh Mansoor bin Zayed AlNahyan Festival.

After a welcome press conference atthe Eastern Mangroves Hotel, thethree days of discussions took place atthe UAE National Archive ConferenceHall, which was broadcast live to theworld by YAS TV. The delegates werewelcomed to the conference byFestival Executive Director, Ms LaraSawaya, HE Dr Abdulla Rayess,Director General of the UAE NationalArchive and HE Sami Al Bonain,Chairman of International Federation ofArabian Horse Racing.

Following the welcome addresses thefive sessions and two workshops beganwith Jockey Training and Safety, moderated by Liz Price with RichardPerham (Senior Jockey Coach, BritishRacing School), Matthew Hyland(Apprentice Jockey Coach, RacingVictoria, Australia), Gary Waterston(Jockey Coach, South African JockeyAcademy), Remi Belloq (ExecutiveDirector, North American RacingAcademy) and Kai Schirmann(Managing Director, German JockeySchool).

The importance of fitness in relation tothe ability to recover from falls wasdiscussed as was the need to perceivejockeys as ‘Athletes’ on a par withother sporting disciplines. Expandingon the students ‘life skills’ andappropriate trainer and senior jockeymentoring to maximise their abilitieswas also recognised as essential. Thechange of whip rules in the UK, where ajockey is only permitted to strike thehorse a limited number of times, wasalso mentioned. This rule change hasled to a different emphasis in ridingstyle and skill set.

After lunch Derek Thompsonmoderated Jockeys: HighPerformance Athletes At The Topsession with jockeys Ahmed Ajtebi(UAE) and Travis Wales (USA), PatBuckley (Racing Director, Abu DhabiEquestrian Club, IFHRA ViceChairman), Simon Milton (UKmotivational sports coach) and PierreBianconne (AFASEC, French JockeySchools). It was agreed that ambitionand dedication were the vitalingredients for success at the highestlevel in the sport.

Simon Milton summed up his thoughtswith “Talent is the minimumrequirement in any sport... You need tomake the most of every singleopportunity to get where you want toget. ” He also asked the audience tosee each jockey as a “business”whereby they are their ownnutritionalist, account, coach, researchand development consultant.

The final session of the first day,

Jockey Diet and Weight Control wasmoderated by Gary Capewell with DrGeorge Wilson, Dr Graeme Close, DrJames Morton, Dr Philip Pritchard, UKThoroughbred jockey Franny Norton;also on the panel was Dr Jamal Hout,an NAET specialist and Dr GuillaimeSellier from AFASEC. Dr Houtspecialises in identifying foodintolerances which may affect weightloss or gain, whilst Dr Sellier presenteda study into jockey eyesight.

The team from John Moores LiverpoolUniversity gave an overview of theresults of their two years of study intoweight control. Interestingly theirstudies showed female jockeys were,on the whole, more healthy than theirmale counterparts. They also stressedthat whilst eating the correct foods wasimportant, structured daily highintensity exercise was also necessary tomaintain both weight and fitness. Thiswas later revisited in the workshops ledby Lara Sawaya and Derek Thompson.

That evening delegates were treated toa Welcome Dinner and high classfashion show by Lebanese designerAmal Azahri at the Eastern MangrovesHotel.

The second day of the conferenceopened with PR and the Media forRacing Industry Recruitmentmoderated by Philip Brannan withDerek Thompson (broadcaster, UK),Victoria Shaw (broadcaster andjournalist, Australia), Gary Capewell(broadcaster and journalist, UK) PamelaBurton (photographer and journalist,USA), Jean-Claude Allies (Paris Turf,France) and John Cobb (Racing Post,UK). After discussing the best ways forJockeys to present themselves thesession concluded with an opportunityfor some of the younger jockeys toexperience interview technique asDerek Thompson questioned them liveon TV. This was clearly a worthwhileexperience for them and was one whichit was hoped to be included in thefuture, during the jockey trainingsessions outside of the conference hall.

There followed a Workshop hosted byLara Sawaya and Derek Thompson

focussing on the integration of thejockey nutrition research worldwide andhow best to progress the knowledgegained so far.

The last day of the conference split thejockeys from the other delegates. Thefinal session was on Breeding, moderated by Derek Thompson withScott and Mark Powell (trainers, USA),Diane Waldron, owner-breeder, USA)and Francois Comte (Stud Manager forHH Sheikh Mansoor). Meanwhile the 120jockeys were invited to take part inthree workshops with tutors from theracing schools present, focussing ontechnique and fitness (using a variety ofracing simulators), plus a lecture onmotivation. This proved a welcomeaddition to the conference programmeand made excellent use of theassembled tutors.

Takaamul and Ismail Koyuncu were thefirst to show and remained prominentwith Merzal for Isis Magnin, Burj Khalifafor Zoe Vande Velde and Aakif withAndrea Fele. These four were clearentering the back straight. By thehome turn only Merzal had held hisposition and he had been joined byHanoof and Ommar Lakjal andNamrood under Emil Kunakbaev, however they swung wide, leaving agap up the rail. This was expertlyexploited by Ben Thompson who urgedhis mount AK Adour, the lowest ratedof the field, up the inner of Merzal tovictory, ahead of Haanoof who tooksecond, with those three clear of theremainder.

This was a fine ride by Thompson whohad secured his place in the final whenwinning the first race of the series atthe Kentucky Horse Park in May onSam Vasquez’s Es Mi Cielo. That had

been the young apprentice’s first rideabroad and his first ever ride on anArabian racehorse. Speaking after thefinal Thompson said. “The trainer[Ahmed Al Mehairbi] warned me Iwould have to work quite hard andpush the horse and it proved the case, but I was prepared. It is great to evenbe here on such an occasion. To win isjust fantastic.”

Matthew Hyland representingAustralia’s Racing Victoria said. “Thatwas great. We were delighted to getinvited 12 months ago to participateand we were absolutely stoked toactually win one of the series races inKentucky. Then tonight’s win just capsit off. This makes it really easy topromote the kids at home and helpsthem to get every opportunity theycan. This is the best way they learn, webelieve.

“Ben said the horse travelled well froma good draw and he tried not to usethe stick, as he’s been told thatArabians don’t run well for it! I’ve beenon four or five of these trips now andeach apprentice that I take, when weleave they are excited, maybe a bitnervous, but when they get home, theyget off the plane and say it’s the bestthing they’ve ever done.

“Ben’s a really fortunate apprenticebecause he gets a lot of education andschooling from our system in Victoria, but there are a lot of apprentices fromother parts of the world who don’thave that level of support - so it isgreat for those guys to have access tothe Australian, UK, USA and SouthAfrican models.

“It gets everyone from around the

world involved, not everyone isfortunate enough to have funding fortheir schools, so it gives the ones whoare less fortunate from the lessercountries an opportunity to shareinformation and tutors. The workshopon Saturday was great. We think thatthis could be expanded in the futurewhen we all come together. For theones that don’t have access to theracing simulators, they gain a realopportunity to tap in to what some ofthe more fortunate apprentice’sexperience."It all comes down to the funding andwe reckon our programme [in Australia]is one of the best. It is governmentfunded, we’re fortunate they see it asimportant, the education of youngpeople and our results speak forthemselves.”

The HH Sheikha Fatima bint MubarakLadies World Championship (IFAHR)held over a mile, followed. The 14riders came from Denmark (SabrinaGammelgaard), France (JustineMercier), Great Britain (Rebecca Smith,Page Fuller, Ann Stokell), Hungary(Alexandra Bihari), Ireland ( LisaO’Neill), Japan (Aoi Kinomae), Morocco(Bouchra Marmoul), Oman (Azhar AlWardi), Sweden (Josefin Landgren,Anna Pilroth), Switzerland (AstridWullschleger) and the USA (SandeeMartin) and included five professionals.

Molahen El Alhan and Sandee Martinwas the clear leader in the early stagesfrom Da’Areen and Justine Mercer andRB So Rich and Azhar Al Wardi.Tracking them were RB Smokin Richand Bouchra Marmoul in company withDelishess and Ann Stokell. Astrid Wullschleger sent stablemate,Najm Alemarat to the front in the last300m to score by a length and aquarter from the fast finishing Haizoomand Rebecca Smith. Molahen Al Alhankept on a further length behind inthird. "I had a perfect raceactually,"she explained." Because wejumped quite fast; the race was run at agood pace and in the end he won welland made a nice job of it. It is the firsttime I have ridden in a country like thisand I hope I can continue to do so."

Britain’s highest placed finisher,Rebecca Smith, was delighted by herexperience. “I rode Sand On Fire towin in Sam Houston, Texas for ScottPowell to qualify to ride here tonight. Igot involved with the Sheikha Fatimaseries through Sarah Oliver of theAmateur Jockeys Association who waslooking for riders to represent GreatBritain. Thanks to Lara and HH Sheikh

Mansoor and HH Sheikha Fatima whohave put on such a great series, somany girls have had the opportunity tocompete, professionals and amateurswho have ridden on the Flat, overJumps and in Arabian races in the UK.

“Before the race I studied the horsesform, though I was limited to knowabout the other horses, but I looked atevery horse in the race and I came andindependently walked the track a fewtimes. It’s a flat tight track, a bit likeRedcar or Catterick maybe, obviouslyit’s right handed. I ran round it theother day and it reminded me ofMarket Rasen, which is of course ajumping track in the UK. They’veobviously been watering, a lot of thegirls thought this morning that it wouldride softer than it walked, but I think itis good ground, I don’t think any of thehorses on form had trouble with thetrack.

T H E A R A B I A N R A C E H O R S E

“I had an idea of how to ride anArabian horse, even though I’ve onlyridden one once before, by talking tothe girls and guys who have riddenthem a lot. I made really good friendswith Kelsey Purcell over the last ninemonths and she’s been so helpful, so Ithink you have to listen to the horse, regardless of whether it is an Arabian,a Thoroughbred or a pony, I had agood draw and I ridden the race a 100times in my head before I arrived hereso to just try and win was the mainthing. To win the qualifier in Texas wasfantastic and to be second here tonightin the World Championship to Astrid, who is a professional, was brilliant.

“I came to ADIHEX in September, which gave me a huge insight into thewhole Global Arabian HorseracingFestival. I knew a little bit aboutArabian racing from articles and

racecards in the Racing Post, but I’dnever had an experience like thisbefore.

“When I was in Sam Houston I reallyloved it and from talking to some ofthe other girls like Stefania Gandola, who only rides Arabian horses, I wouldreally like to take out an ArabianRacing Organisation license next year ifI can get it to fit in around my currentjob as an Assistant Trainer, because Ireally think I would enjoy it. I’ve reallybeen looking forward to today, I’vebeen down to the track to watch someof the horses training this week and I’mreally quite interested in Arabian racingnow. I work for Micky Hammond inMiddleham, North Yorkshire, which isall Thoroughbreds. We don’t reallyhave any Arabian racing up North atthe moment and I think that’s maybesomething that should be looked into.

“Before I got involved with the seriesI’d suffered a big injury – dislocated myknee and ruptured the ligaments - so Ihad extensive surgery and a lot ofrehabilitation. I was told I probablywouldn’t ride again and definitelywouldn’t race ride again! But that wasout of the question, so we workedalong the lines of getting me back inthe saddle. The Injured Jockeys Fundand the Amateur Jockeys Associationwere very helpful during the twelvemonths I had off.

“It’s obviously very difficult to get backto the point where you left off, asobviously you are another year olderand there are new kids coming throughto take the rides that could have beenyours, so it was really good for me PRwise to be invited on this trip. Therewas a piece in the Racing Post afterwhich local trainers offered supportand rides on the back of that. So I thinkthat the Sheikha Fatima series is agreat opportunity for lady riders to gettheir name out there.

“Lara is so fantastic, it’s all over theworld now. Us English girls are quitefortunate that we do have Ladies racesthrough the AJA, but a lot of theseother countries don’t. The RacingSimulator session we had on Saturdaymorning was great. My friend has oneand I’m on it all the time at home, but alot of these kids had never even seenone before, let alone having a go onone and to do so with the fitness andtechnique coaching as well was justbrilliant for them.

“The opportunities for everyoneinvolved in the series are fantastic, I’mstill a little bit overwhelmed to behonest. I have kept in touch with nearly

all the girls I rode with in Texas and it isalso great for the British girls to gettogether as at home, when you’reriding, you don’t really have time tosocialise.

"Another plus is meeting people fromother areas of racing and the mediawhich gives you incredible networkingopportunities and I’m just so gratefulfor the chance to be involved and alsoto learn more about Arabian racing.”

Heading the field on ratings was thisyear’s Dubai Kahayla Classic winnerManark for HH Sheikh Hamdan binRashid Al Maktoum. His talent wasevident at three, when winning theGroup 2 Juvenile contest at Newburyon Dubai Day, though he had missedhis four year old season before comingback into training last year with GillDuffield. He showed enough whenthird in the Group 1 HarwoodInternational at Doncaster to betransferred to Dubai for the winter withErwan Charpy. Always a buzzy horse,he disappointed on turf over 5f, butdifferent tactics and a change ofsurface made all the difference for acomfortable win in the Group 2 BaniYas, before making all for his firstGroup 1 success in the Kahayla.Though the form pick, there were

obvious reservations on his first start ofthe season and back on turf. Theremaining six UAE runners all had thesame disadvantage of having their firstruns of the Gulf season, Abhaar, amagnificent looking colt for HE SheikhSultan bin Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nayhanwas unbeaten in five starts and hadwon on his debut on this card last year.

The United States had a strong handwith the evergreen So Big Is Better, who was closest to him on ratings, justahead of Paddy’s Day, who he hadbeaten on his latest start in a Grade 2in September. Also with something tofind with those two was RB Rich whohad been third on that occasion, withthe filly, RB Frynch Broad adding to theAmerican contingent.

Also fit from their European campaignswere the multiple Za’Beel Stakes sprintwinner Al Mouhannad, Sahabba, aGroup 3 winner at a mile and Kalino, who has been disappointing, despitebeing runner up to Al Mourtajez inDeauville in the summer.

Having won the Kahayla Classic fromthe front, it was no surprise to seeDane O’Neill employing similar tacticson Manark here, blazing a trail aheadof So Big Is Better, Kalino and Thakif.Kalino soon joined him by halfway andthe field was soon strung out by thestrong pace.

Probably lacking race fitness, Manarkcried enough by the home bend,

where there was drama for So Big IsBetter whose saddle slipped and TravisWales did well to keep the partnershipintact to the line.

Kalino however, was travelling sweetlyfor Olivier Peslier and was two lengthsclear of Sahabba and Thakif with afurlong to go. The line could not cometoo soon for him though, as Sahabbawas gaining ground with every stride.

A photo finish was called showingSheikh Abdullah bin Khalifa Al Thani’sKalino had prevailed by the shortest ofheads in what was a suitably thrillingfinish to the World’s richest Arabianrace.

Afterwards trainer Alban de Mieullecommented. “In the Qatar ArabianWorld Cup at Longchamp, both timeshe was unplaced - so I think he doesn’tlike the track, though we knew hadsome ability. The drop back to a mile, and I think he prefers soft ground, which helped him win today. We havealso added a shadow roll to thecheekpieces to make him concentratein front and I said to Olivier ‘If you cango, go, don’t wait for the other one’.When you have the best jockey, it isalso easier!”

"I get on very well with Arabianhorses.” Peslier commented. “ I knowthis horse, he is great, at a mile he isvery good. He is a tough horse with agood action and when we started, no

one wanted to go in front; I gotbumped after 100 metres, so I can’tmove too quickly because my horsewas not comfortable, so I preferred towait, switch off, and go outside. Then Igot him relaxed and galloping on thebridle. In the straight we acceleratedand after that he fought well. I wasafraid of the second because I knewshe was very fast, so that was why Iwas prepared to go early as I knew myhorse would just keep galloping and hejust did enough.

“After this there is Qatar of course, butif you have the opportunity to comehere, to the Kahayla Classic - if we areinvited? So we’ll see, but for now, wewill just enjoy the celebration.”

It is with much sadness that we mark thepassing of German Apprentice Jockey, SandraEichenhofer who tragically failed to recoverfrom injuries sustained in a race riding fall inthe ninth leg of the HH Sheikha Fatima bintMubarak Ladies World Championship(IFAHR) in Brazil on October 26 2015.

Aged just 23, she took out her license this yearand had already amassed six wins from just 50rides. Our thoughts are with her family andfriends and to all who attended the racemeeting at Sao Paolo last month.
