C ultural curatorsCéline Frémauxand Yolande

Vragar, respectivelyresponsible for culturalheritage inventories inGuyana and in Guade-loupe, were invited bythe association, Saint-Barth Essentiel, to pres-ent a lecture on Wednes-day, February 12, on theimportance for the islandto create its own archi-tectural inventory. OnTuesday, February 11,

Frémaux and Vragar vis-ited the Mireille ChoisyJunior High to meet withstudents in the eighthand ninth grades.

“I know there is enor-mous real-estate pres-sure on the island. Inthis context it is veryimportant to have a firmhandle on its architectur-al heritage,” explainsFrémaux. “To avoidhaving all traces of thepast, in terms of build-

ings—or the vestiges ofa manmade landscape—simply disappear. Andnever to be foundagain,” she adds. At thespeed with which con-crete is being poured inSaint Barth, it seemsimportant to rememberwhat was there before.

“In Saint-Barth, actionsare often taken tooquickly,” observesHélène Bernier, presi-dent of Saint-BarthEssentiel. “For exam-ple: the wooden upperstory of the Swedishgovernor’s house andformer town hall.Because they wereafraid it would tumbleinto the street, it wasurgently demolished, without a clear plan forits eventual reconstruc-tion. Another example:the building that housesthe Saint-Joseph libraryin Lorient. The oldest

building on the islandstill standing,” shenotes.

“A lack of knowledgeabout the way it wasbuilt led to the applica-tion of a layer of con-crete which could havecaused more damage. It’s not the fault of thetechnical servicesdepartment, but a docu-ment pointed out thehistoric interest of thisbuilding, maybe theywould pay more atten-tion to it,” attestsBernier. “The goal ofthe inventory is not toput the island under abell jar, but to establishpriorities so that the ter-ritorial council canmake the proper deci-sions. As much as thisrepresents an awarenessof these buildings, it’salso an awareness of ourown history,” she concludes.

Historic Architectural Inventory:Why Is It Important?

O n Wednesday,February 5, a newalliance between

Air Antilles and Winairwas signed at the RadissonHotel in Saint Martin. Thisbusiness alliance essen-tially consists of inter-company agreements aswell as code sharing. “Andto partner on schedules, procedures, andresources,” adds SergeTsygalnitsky, director ofAir Antilles.

This will eventually facili-tate flight connections bet-ween more than 22 desti-nations in the Caribbean

and Guyana. In terms ofdestinations, the combina-tion created by AirAntilles and Winair willbe “number one in theregion,” attests MichaelCleaver, PDG of Winair, who was in St Barth onFriday, February 14 tomeet with tourism officialsand present the possibili-ties offered by this newalliance.

In terms of annual passen-gers (600,00) and thenumber of seats availableon their collective planes(379), the joint companieswill represent the third lar-

gest airline in the region, after Insel Air, based inCuracao, and LIAT, basedin Antigua. The alliance ofAir Antilles and Winair islogical as the two compa-nies complement eachother. Winair brings to thetable its routes for the Nor-thern Islands of the Carib-bean, as well as the Dutchislands such as Curacao.Air Antilles flies more inthe southern islands, inclu-ding Guadeloupe, Marti-nique, and Guyana. Inaddition, their ATR-42 air-planes will allow Winairto eventually fly to SanJuan (Puerto Rico), theDominican Republic, andCuracao. What the alliance actuallymeans, for example, is thata passenger can buy an AirAntilles ticket fromPointe-à-Pitre or Fort-de-France to fly to the Nor-thern Islands, such asAnguilla, as of March 15,Saba as of April 1, Saint-Eustache, or even Tortolain the BVI’s, by way ofSint Maarten, as the agree-ment allows Air Antilles

to land at Princess Julianathree times per week, which has been the case asof February 15. The com-pany will continue to fly toSaint-Martin Grand-Caseas well. “A single ticket means youonly have to check inonce,” adds the director ofAir Antilles. “And it couldmean lower prices for pas-sengers than two separatetickets on two differentcompanies,” notes Tsygal-nitsky. This works in theother direction as well, where a passenger canleave Sint Maarten orSaint Barth, with just aWinair ticket to fly toPuerto Rico— hopefullyas of March—the Domini-can Republic, or Curacao, aboard the Air AntillesATR-42. “2014 will be pivotal,”observes Tsygalnitsky.“First we need to see howthe market reacts. If allgoes well, this alliancewill be the first step in afuture in which the compa-nies expand together,” heindicates.

A new alliance between the two airlines allows Air Antilles to land three times per week at Princess Juliana. And Winair to fly to Puerto Rico or the Dominican Republic via Air Antilles’larger planes…

The current epidemic ofchikungunya in theFrench West Indiescontinues to prevail. InSaint Barth, a reportpublished on Thursday,February 13 noted 104cases judged probableor confirmed by bloodtest, as well as 270 sus-pected cases seen bydoctors. A total of 55new suspected caseswere reported lastweek, which means theepidemic has not yetrun its course. The mainareas hit on the islandare Corossol, Gustavia, and Flamands.

Health authorities haverecommended notrequesting blood testsfor every suspectedcase seen by a doctor.“Since the diagnosis of

the general practitionersare generally correct,”as the authorities justi-fied last week, as to notover-saturate the med-ical laboratories, andreserve the tests forabnormal forms of thedisease in order todetect severe cases oreventual mutations ofthe virus. After that, one can only wait to seeif the number of casesdiminishes in the weeksto come, which wouldsignify a decrease in theepidemic. In Saint Mar-tin (French side), wherethis epidemic ofchikungunya startedlast November, 653cases have been con-firmed via blood test, and doctors have seenas many as 1450 possi-ble cases.

A s of Saturday, February22, a collection of 15 pho-tographs by Chrystèle

Escure will be on display at theChristopher Hotel. This selectionof her work comprising surfing, femininity, and landscapes ofSaint Barth will remain on exhibitfor a year.

The Christopher Hotel in PointeMilou will display a series of 15images by photographer ChrystèleEscure for the next year. Her loveof curves is reflected in images ofsurfing mostly taken at Toiny, orin femininity, another of her pre-vailing themes. Quite frequently, the story of aphotographer begins with the firstcamera presented as a gift. This isthe case for Escure, whose fatherwas also a photographer, and whotransmitted his passion and tech-nique to his daughter, teaching herhow to print, which might explainher preference for handsomeblack and white images. Escure, who has worked in thehotel industry in Saint Barth, cre-ated a magazine about the

Caribbean islands. This broughther back to her photography, sev-en years ago, and she has notstopped shooting since. Her pref-erence is for women, or surfers, and she declares a true admirationfor this sport, which consists ofdefying the elements, and forthose who practice this “aquaticdance.” The exhibit also includes land-scapes of the island of SaintBarth, which Escure has explored

from corner to corner. She knowsexactly where, at exactly whattime, to find the most beautifullight.

Photo exhibit by ChrystèleEscure: Opening reception, Saturday, February 22 at the Christopher Hotel, 6pm, with live music Soley and a fashion show by Marina St Barth and Donna delSol at 8pm.
