My personal assistant started when I was discharged from hospital after getting a knee replacement, meaning that I was at my weakest and my family welcomed the extra assistance during my recovery.
My personal assistant has flexible start times depending on my appointments, my personal care is attended to which also includes - haircut, shaving, nail cutting and medicine being administered. I have assistance with continental and cooked breakfasts and lunches this allows my wife to get ready at her own pace, instead of helping me all the time.
We see and respect our personal assistant as a family member, we now have our family back in the correct titles, mum, dad, and twin daughters enjoying every day as a family.
If you are considering Self Directed Support before contacting your local social work please carry out a diary of your additional daily needs and empower yourself with all 4 options.
Remember nobody is housebound, if the right services are in place.
Self Directed Support four options explained:
Option 1 - you choose to receive a direct payment to purchase support yourself. You will have access to advice and support from your council and your local support service.
Option 2 - your council may give you the option to choose your own support while it holds the money and arranges the chosen support on your behalf.
Option 3 - you choose to have the council select the appropriate support and arrange it for you.
Option 4 - A mix of options 1, 2 and 3 for specific aspects of your support.

Growing up with Rheumatoid Arthritis has its daily hurdles, luckily my family have been very supportive but they have also made a few sacrifices on the way as traditional social care services were not everyone's first choice, having a stranger in your home every day finding yourself on repeat mode explaining what and how your care assistance should be carried out.
Managing is the keyword and friends and family members gradually became the unpaid Carer. As time went on we realised that we may require care in our family home, but we were stubborn because I remember how my grandparent’s traditional social care services only left added pressure to my parents.
Putting my work experience into our family home, my wife, twin daughters and myself all helped each other with various daily chores, until one day we hit that brick wall, we were exhausted.
One Saturday afternoon at the Spina Bifida parents meeting we were informed about Self Directed Support (SDS) and how it will eventually shift the balance of power to the user to direct their own care and services.
From this moment on I knew this would be the solution to our prayers, after sourcing more information I was surprised to hear that a Direct Payment had been in place for over 15 years but unfortunately not widely advertised or suggested by Pediatrician, Social Work and GP who were all aware of our situation, and so our Self Directed Support journey began with one phone call to our local Social Work Adult Services, we were visited within 6 weeks at our home.
The Social Worker had Self Directed Support knowledge and explained in non-jargon how I could go about employing my own personal assistant (PA).
During the process I felt that I was on This is your Life which is something you have to remember as the care package I was building was all about me, my family and friends said painting a clear picture will not only assist the appointed social worker to complete the forms but the managers of the local authority who will sign off your package.
Within 12 weeks, I was awarded my care package, this allowed me to contact my local Job Centre who assisted me with advertising my job description, collating the CV's to enable me to carry out my matrix and interview.

The Network’s Consultation Event will be held in the Alona Hotel, Strathclyde Park, Motherwell on Wednesday 22nd October 2014, 9:30 for 10am start - 1pm.
A Caring for Carers day was held at Auchlochan Garden Village in Lesmahagow, to make Carers in the Clydesdale community aware of the services and supports which are available to them.
The event was hosted by Clydesdale Public Partnership Forum (CLPPF) with support from NHS Lanarkshire.
The event consisted of a variety of stalls including: CLPPF, Care and Repair, Alzheimer’s Scotland, South Lanarkshire Council, Marie Curie, McMillian Nurses, St Andrews Hospice, Young Carers Service Lanarkshire, South Lanarkshire Carers Network and Princess Royal Trust Lanarkshire Carers Centre.
There was also a variety of key speakers and people were also given the opportunity to hear Carers stories and participate in a question and answer session. Angela Williamson, Health Improvement practitioner of NHS Lanarkshire, said “The stalls and speakers provided great practical information for Carers which they found beneficial and useful. We generated a lot of positive feedback from those who attended, it was commented on how informative the event was in helping to understand the problems and obstacles they face as Carers. The event also highlighted that all Carers are different and it was helpful to listen to others experiences in order to offer them the best support we can”.
Anne Lindsay, chair of CLPPF, said “The event was a great success and it is fantastic that so many members of the Clydesdale community came along to show their support.
“The CLPPF would like to thank all the speakers and panel members who gave their valuable time and the events manager and staff at the Auchlochan for all their kind help and assistance, which helped make the day a successful one.”…………………………..
Auchlochan Garden Village Plans Approved For New Radiotherapy Centre
Construction work on a new £22 million radiotherapy centre for the West of Scotland is set to start in the next few weeks following the approval of detailed plans by the Scottish Government. The centre, which will be known as the Lanarkshire Beatson, is being built at Monklands in Airdrie, to help meet the rising demand for radiotherapy treatment over the next ten years.
Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing Alex Neil said: “This is an important step forward in this new £22 million radiotherapy facility at Monklands Hospital, which will mean that more patients in the West of Scotland will be able to access the best possible treatment closer to home, this is very important as we drive home our message to detect cancer early, get treatment and see more people continuing to survive this disease”.
Operating as a satellite of the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Care Centre in Glasgow, the new centre will be equipped with most advanced technology and equipment to deliver the same world-class treatment currently provided at the Glasgow centre. This includes two new state-of-the-art liner accelerators, which deliver high-energy radiation to shrink tumours and kill cancer cells, with expansion space for a third machine, if required.
The centre will also have a CT simulator to help plan radiotherapy treatment. This will enable around 80 patients a day who require radiotherapy for lung, breast, prostate and rectal cancers to be treated.

Sainsbury's East Kilbride Town Centre store
invited, South Lanarkshire Carers Network and partners to hold an information stall on Friday 13th June for Carers week. The information stall was very well received by the general public.
Along with staff from Sainsbury's in attendance were Brian Doig and Margaret McNab of East Kilbride Dementia Group, Joyce Brownlie and Linda Craig from South Lanarkshire Carers Network, and Linda Fabiani MSP for East Kilbride who popped in for a chat.
Out of Hours Review
I n 2 0 0 4 c h a n g e s t o t h e nationally agreed GP contract saw the responsibility for the provision of Primary Care, Out of Hours care transferring from local GP's to be the responsibility of the NHS Boards.
In Lanarkshire this was developed around a home visiting service for those too unwell or frail to leave their home and a service provided in five centres throughout the authority. … …
One in each of the acute hospitals, one in Lanark and one in Cumbernauld. . Over the past few years, there have been increasing difficulties in maintaining the current service model and it was decided to commence a review of the service. A Review Board was set up and Carers and Patients are active members of the Board.
Three focus groups for staff took place at various times and venues to collate their issues, concerns and suggestions for improvement. . A questionnaire was circulated during a week in May in all five NHS centres and almost 400 returns highlighted that patients and carers praised the staff and the service provided.
An Option Appraisal Event took place on Friday 27th June when 10 options for a future service were "scored" against the NHS Values of providing a quality, safe, person-centred, effective, efficient and timely service and from this event two or three options will be taken forward to be prepared for "Public Consultation" later in the year after the Referendum vote.
This will be your opportunity to "have your say" on how this service will be provided in the future and we will keep you up-to-date in our newsletter, and information will also be in the press, on how you can be involved.

K-otic – Drama Group
K-otic Productions is a drama group for adults with learning disabilities and/or those with autism. Groups are also run for children with additional support needs (two after-school groups in East Kilbride). K-otic is run by Helen Jordan who also works as a lecturer for adults with additional support needs. ….
Helen is supported by volunteers, all of whom are PVG checked.
Workshops for adults are held in:
Ferniegair Community Hall on Monday mornings.
Kirktonholme Community Hall in East Kilbride on Monday afternoons.
Calderwood Community Hall in East Kilbride on Friday afternoons.
The two hour sessions cost £7 and are held each week as groups work towards putting on plays/musicals at East Kilbride Arts Centre. Workshops are “laid back and fun” and for people with all levels of ability.…

Independent Living Fund – update
It was announced in April that there will be a Scottish Independent Living Fund (ILF). .…………………………… . . . . The intention is to protect existing claimants’ awards and to open up the Scottish fund to new applicants.
Speak Out Advocacy Project believes that people affected by learning disabilities should be given appropriate information about the issues that affect their whole community.
Speak Out feels that “too often, people don’t receive the information that they need to make informed choices about the big decisions, and this is particularly true at elections”.
Many people with learning disabilities do not get the opportunity to vote and the Speak Out Project has asked representatives from both the ‘Yes’ and ‘Better Together’ campaigns to come along and give voters the chance to hear the arguments and to ask for more Information..… The speakers will be Michael McCann, MP, speaking on behalf of ‘Better Together’ and Linda Fabiani, MSP supporting the ‘Yes’ campaign. Both are well known local politicians who have worked with Lanarkshire Ace (collective advocacy) members in the past. Guardianship Event
An event is planned for carers and parents who have been granted Guardianship (so that they can legally make decisions for an adult). It is to be delivered by Mental Health Officers who assess parents and carers to become legal guardians.……

The Scottish Government has developed two guides (one for service-users and one for Carers) in relation to the new law in Scotland now underpinning social care assessments and funding for care (self directed support). Self-directed Support Event 17th September 2014
Lanarkshire Carers Centre is hosting a self-directed support event in September. Social care assessments and funding for care is changing in light of the new law that came in in April of this year. The event aims to explain how social care assessments are changing and how people can have a choice as to how to spend the money allocated to them for their care and support needs.

NHS Lanarkshire’s Community Learning Disability team has developed a short easy-read questionnaire asking if people with learning disabilities know they are entitled to certain health checks on an annual basis. The questionnaire informs carers as well as people with learning disabilities.

One Button Washing Machine – Pilot
Cornerstone, a Scottish social care charity is piloting the use of a one-button washing machine that has been developed for adults with cognitive impairments such as a learning disability or dementia. . It has been developed by JTM Service who provides laundry facilities to more than 100 social housing providers. The machine has no digital controls, washes on a standard 40 degree programme and has an automated detergent dosing system.

Loretto Housing Association provides housing support and care at home services to people living in their own homes within South Lanarkshire, who have experienced enduring mental health problems.
Loretto works within a multi disciplinary framework with support staff working closely with Community Psychiatric Nurses, Social Workers, Occupational Therapists, Advocates and other relevant agencies.
Loretto plans to work with each individual to encourage and support people to identify their own aspirations and outcomes (things that make a good day/week).

A new therapist, Lienne Brown is working at Lifestyles, Cambuslang (Glenside Drive) offering therapies and beauty treatments at subsidised prices for carers (£7 for half an hour and £13 per hour). Treatments include massage, facials, eyebrow shaping, waxing tinting etc. Lienne also works at Lifestyles in East Kilbride (Liddell Grove) to offer carers the subsidised therapies. .
If you are supporting a family member (child or adult), a neighbour or friend on an unpaid basis, as a carer you can access the therapies. Lienne is qualified, registered and experienced.
