Decide your position

The most important parts of an Argument Essay:

Page 14: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

Once you have the sources, decide which side you will argue.

Page 15: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

The reason why you decide after the sources is because your position might change after reading.

Know the other side’s key arguments

The most important parts of an Argument Essay:

Page 17: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

A big part of the argument essay is to counter-argue against the side opposing your ideas.

Page 18: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

The better this is done, the better your essay will be.

Page 19: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

ACTIVITY 1:

Group discussion and topic picking

Page 20: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

In your groups, discuss what arguable issue is important to you and decide what topic your group will argue.

You can only have one topic.

Page 21: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

ACTIVITY 2:

Finding and reading a source

Page 22: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

Individually, find a source about the topic, read it, and briefly share the main ideas with your group.

Page 23: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

ACTIVITY 3:

Deciding a position

Page 24: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

In your groups, decide what position your group will take. Your group can only have one.

Page 25: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

Sometimes, in an argument essay, you have to argue a side that is not your personal view.

Common Rules to live by:1. Do not generalize: using “all” or “every” will frustrate many professors…

Page 32: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

Common Rules to live by:…since many Americans believe that people are unique, person to person.

Page 33: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

2. American academic audiences like solid facts.

Page 34: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

“Prove it!” is a common phrase by American academic audiences.

Page 35: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

Proof needs to be sources, facts, and/or figures…

Page 36: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

What you think or feel is not convincing in American writing unless others agree who are more prominent.

Page 37: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

American academic audiences do not necessarily utilize wisdom from respected elders or religious traditions.

Page 38: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

If they do appeal to these, it is because their facts, not their emotions, are important.

Page 39: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

3. American audiences like examples of objective truths.

Page 40: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

For example, it would be acceptable to explain that it is common for language tutors to find math difficult… (point)

Page 41: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

…if I can find other believable sources (in this case, tutors) who have experienced this situation (data, support)

Page 42: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

…with me, myself, as an example of that truth.(survey results[data])

Page 43: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

4. Americans like point-by-point order with support per point.

Page 44: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

In other words, if I have a topic, I must prove each part by….

Page 45: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

…telling the reader what I mean to say, why I am saying it and how I can support it…

Page 46: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

I cannot go to my next point until I have fully and successfully supported the point that I am currently on.

Page 47: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

This “topic, point 1, explain, support, point 2, explain, support, point 3, explain, support, conclude” pattern…

Page 48: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

…is typical “linear” thinking for the American reader (and therefore, your professor).

Page 49: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

According to Gary Althen, who was an advisor to foreign students at the University of Iowa, in his book American Ways…

Page 50: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

Some cultures “have a tradition of eloquent emotion-filled speech…

Page 51: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

They seek to move their audiences…because of the human feelings they share.”(32)

Page 52: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

He also explains that other cultures “are likely to attach more weight to ideas or theories”(32)

Page 53: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

Some cultures use stories to convey the thoughts they have in mind. (Althen 32)

Page 54: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

Other cultures “are characterized by vagueness and ambiguity.” (Althen 32)

Page 55: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

BUT…

Page 56: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

WARNING

Page 57: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

American academic language is different!

Page 58: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

“It is not enough to make a point, according to the typical American notion…

Page 59: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

…a responsible speaker or writer is also expected to prove…

Page 60: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

…that the point is true, accurate, or valid” (Althen 32)

Page 61: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

Therefore,

Page 62: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

Do not generalize

Page 63: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

Prove your point with facts and figures

Page 64: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

Appeal to emotion only if your professor wants it

Page 65: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

Make your point, explain your point, support your point

Page 66: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

Try to be as specific as possible without wandering.

Page 67: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

Use believable sources…

Page 68: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

In other words, on an essay about MLDA (drinking age)…

Page 69: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

…which is common in ESL 103, you will want to cite…

Page 70: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

…someone who has researched the topic in depth…

Page 71: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

…rather than someone like Macklemore or Jay-Z.

Page 72: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

Realize that incomplete points frustrate US academic readers.

Page 73: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

Finally, BE DIRECT. American audiences LOVE direct points.

Page 74: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

Now, it’s your turn…

Page 75: The Argument Essay English Learners’ Fridays Workshop October 9, 2015.

Please compose a short essay in your group about the position of the argument you have chosen. Be sure to quote your source, as well.
