December 2013 1 THE ARLETA CONNECTION Home of the Dolphins Five times a year we take the students to see a play at Portland Center Stage. We have been doing this for several years and the students have enjoyed a variety of performances. Some of the plays we have seen are: Sunset Blvd, Oklahoma, Fiddler on the Roof, Sweeney Todd, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and many more. A few years back Kathy Mcgraw and myself decided we should expand the experience and do dinner. At first we had dinner at Arleta. Since then we have taken the kids out to different restaurants in the Portland area. Last night, Nov. 21, 2013 we attended the performance of, “Twist Your Dickens.” It was a hilarious spoof on the Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. The students thoroughly enjoyed the performance. We also went to the Old Spaghetti Factory where we feasted on pasta, salads and bread. In January we will attend the play, “Chinglish.” Chinglish chronicles the journey of an American businessman who travels to China looking to score a lucrative contact for his family's sign-making firm. The plays have been a wonderful success and exposes the students to live theater and a night out that they won’t soon forget. - Mr. Bivens, Assistant Principal

Sun Spots Updates from your Sun Community School

SUN Family Night – Friday, Dec.13th 5:30-7:30pm All Arleta families are invited for an evening of fun including crafts, a scavenger hunt, free pizza & salad, prizes and on-stage entertainment by SUN students! Come see what SUN students have been up this term and get inspired to sign up for a winter term class. Performances include acts by the Circus Arts class, VoiceUp Singing and the film produced by the Video-Making class.

Winter Term Sign Ups SUN class guides for winter term will be available during the week of Dec.9th.  This is your chance to try out something new! To give everyone a fair chance, classes will be filled in a lottery system, so don’t stress if you don’t get your form in right away. It’s the holiday season and you’ve got a lot on your plate! Still, please turn in your registration before you head off for winter break so we have as many forms as possible before we start pulling those names. Winter Term SUN classes will run for nine weeks, January 13th – March 13th. Keep your eye out for a couple options open to Kindergarten students!

Basketball Coaches Needed We are still DESPERATELY seeking volunteer coaches for our Boys 5/6th and Girls 7/8th Arleta teams. They will be playing in the PP&R Saturday youth basketball league. The commitment is 1-2 practices during the week (several 6:15-7pm practice slots are still open), and 8 Saturday games beginning in January. We guarantee it’ll be rewarding and fun! Besides, you know you’ve been wanting to get out and exercise more in the new year…now here’s your excuse to run around a bit! The SUN program will also need a basketball coach to teach Gr.K-4 level classes as part of our after school program. The after school position is paid an instructor stipend. Please contact [email protected] or 503-916-6332 if interested in either position.

Before School Supervision Students are supervised before school at 7:45 in the morning. At this time students can enter the cafeteria for breakfast or wait outside for the 7:55 bell to ring. Before 7:45 students are not supervised.

After School Supervision Students are supervised after school from 2:15-2:25. We have a SUN School program for after school activities. After 2:25 our teachers are either attending meetings or working in their classrooms.

Cold Weather Please remember to make sure that your child brings warm clothes to school because we go outside for recess unless it is raining heavily.

Mitten Drive We have many students with very cold fingers. Please bring mittens and gloves to the main office and we’ll get them distributed to students in need.

Positive Behavior Supports This month we will be reviewing our expectations of what it looks like to be safe, respectful, and responsible at Arleta. Students will receive “links” of paper for being safe, respectful and responsible. The links will be put together to form a chain in the cafeteria. Once the links go all the way around the cafeteria we will have a school-wide celebration, hopefully at the end of the day on December 20th.

Parent Teacher Conferences Thank you for attending conferences this year. A close partnership between

teachers and parents is extremely important to the success of our students.

"First Quarter Grades

By now all K-5 families should have received a written progress

report to let you know the progress your child made during the first

quarter of the school year. Unfortunately letter grades were entered by

mistake for the majority of K-5 students, which resulted in report cards

being mailed home with only letter grades in Art. Once again, this was a

mistake and we are in the process of removing these grades from your

students’ records. Thank you for your patience.
