“By nurturing the artist, we enrich the community.”

The Art League develops the artist through education, exhibition, and a stimulating, supportive environment, while sharing the experience of the visual arts with the community.

You may be new to The Art League through participation in exhibits in our gallery, or through studies at our prestigious school. Whatever your introduction to us is, you’ll enjoy our dynamic and comprehensive visual arts offerings as well as exhibition and art sales opportunities in the largest gallery at the landmark Torpedo Factory Art Center (TFAC). These opportunities are presented by the League’s hundreds of artists, patrons, and volunteers.

Pencil Rendering, Drypoint Etching, and Silverpoint DrawingPriscilla TreacyTwo weeks of sharpening drawing skills using graded graphite pencils on refined, rendered drawings prepare the student for two weeks of drypoint etching. No chemicals are used in this type of printmaking as all one needs are a steel or diamond point and a piece of plastic or metal. This long revered method produces beautiful, seductive prints. Two weeks of drawing with a piece of silver in a holder on specially prepared paper concludes the class. A materials fee is payable to the instructor for certain supplies.

$185 Winter (9 weeks) Wednesday 10:00am–12:30pm

Composition & Design FundamentalsLisa SemeradThe foundation of strong imagery is design—a vital element to all art forms. Students learn to recognize and control movement within the picture plane through study of shape, value, pattern, line, texture, and color in multiple formats. Most exercises are in abstract form, which are then related to both abstract and representational art. No previous drawing experience needed.

Fall & Spring (9 weeks)$200 Saturday 1:00pm–4:00pm (Fall only)$200 Monday 7:00pm–10:00pm (Spring only)$185 Tuesday 1:00pm–3:30pm (Spring only)

Composition & Design ApplicationsLisa SemeradThis course builds on the concepts learned in Composition and Design Fundamentals. Students use a variety of visual concepts to create more inventive, emotionally powerful, cohesive works of art. Representation, depth, transparency, movement, narrative, and color are added to the design equation. Students enjoy success applying these universal theories and techniques across a range of media, subject matters, and styles. Weekly concepts are applied to personal subjects or teachers assignments. Group critiques enrich the class. The instructor has a broad knowledge of drawing materials, but previous experience in individual chosen media is required. Acrylics, oil bars, oil and chalk pastels, and abstract artists are welcome. Sorry, no oil paint.

The art of caricature extends this visual vocabulary beyond nature’s normal repertoire. Opaque Watercolor in MiniaturePriscilla TreacyMiniature painting has had a rich tradition ranging from ancient Rome and medieval illuminated manuscripts, to India and Persia, to the Renaissance. The small format encourages the artist to create something intimate and personal. Gouache is the perfect medium for this type of work. Gouache is a heavy, opaque watercolor paint that has been used for centuries. It is easier to handle than transparent watercolor because it can be continually reworked, or “corrected.” Students learn techniques and use of tools and materials while the instructor provides examples, designs, and source materials for paintings. Different surfaces and formats are explored and demos of the medium are included.

Potential Space and the FoundCarol Dupré“Creative evolution” and “structural components” form a balancing act on the edge of the unknown—with “unknown” accepted as one of these: abyss, uncanny, or sublime. Artists consider them as one, and separate, for well-rounded exploration. With two canvases underway, first is the spectral notion of the cityscape, second is the spectral portrayal of the figure. The spectral includes consideration of initiation (where concept is still immaterial) and then development of structural components in association with concepts, genres, corpus of texts and fictional theories or a meta-theoretical perspective: doubt, transgression, play, the peculiar, and so on. Participants discover that genealogy of a concept rips beyond boundaries of containment in an “endless deferral of meaning” that operates between the seductive arts—film, theater, literature, painting—to include theory and psychoanalysis: leading to the historical genre or the fantastic-realist blend. Class includes: painting time; printed lectures; discussion; films; preparation for series and exhibition.

Structural DrawingDan ThompsonThis drawing workshop is presented as a way of analyzing the figure in a long-posed drawing or painting situation. In part one, the figure is set-up as a two-day long pose, and work begins on gesture, proportion, shape, and tone. In part two the human figure is analyzed by creating a simple diagram of the components of the figure in space. This diagram is then developed according to the concerns of plane, rhythm, perspective, and constructive anatomy. Modeling and shading are explored in the on-going drawing.

Limited Palette WatercolorsPeter UlrichLimiting one’s palette to no more than three colors achieves a number of positive things for the artist. First, the composition is strongly unified and harmonious because one is mixing the colors to be used and they are automatically related. Second, the painting conveys a “mood” such as brilliant hues producing a bright scene, whereas subdued hues produce a more somber scene. Third, when the color palette is limited, it leads to a more careful consideration of composition and value to achieve strong paintings. This workshop explores a wide variety of limited palettes to produce paintings that are unified, convey a mood, and are strongly stated.
