Matthew’s Gospel is a fitting start to a week where we honor our patron Saint and recommit ourselves to religious freedom. Jesus tells his disciples to proclaim from the “housetops” what they have been taught, without fear. God will not abandon them. We are precious to Him. From the sparrow to us, all are part of His plan regardless of size, color, or supposed “worth.” Thomas More spent much of his life seeking justice for the poor and underserved. He advocated on behalf of universal education; he stood firm for his principals and his faith. He was not perfect, but looked to perfect his soul. More lost his position, security, and finally his life because of his refusal to acknowledge Henry VIII’s spiritual leadership over Rome and the annulment of his first marriage. He died, as we know “God’s servant” first,” a martyr to his religious convictions. He knew then, as we do now, that upholding religious freedom is important, not just for an individual, but for society. Bishop Burbidge has asked us to participate in Religious Freedom Week; to pray and take action in supporting the vulnerable, against religious persecution, to care for one’s another right to worship. Thomas More spoke on this as well: “Because the soul has such deep roots in personal and social life and its values run so contrary to modern concerns, caring for the soul may well turn out to be a radical act, a challenge to accepted norms.” So let us be radical, as Jesus was deemed a radical. Let us continue our missionary call to bring Christ to all peoples and all nations. It will not always be easy; but again, More has an answer for us: “You wouldn’t abandon the ship because you couldn't control the winds.” I wish all fathers, and those who act as fathers, a Happy Father’s Day. Again, I ask you to pray for them, living or deceased. I ask that if your relationship is good, give thanks. If it is troubled or even broken, reach out; try to mend it. Pray for peace and the will to foster it. I’ve decided to title my columns, “All In,” a theme I use throughout my homilies and which guides my life. Jesus desires us to be with Him completely. Our lives should be directed that way. We need to stay on the ship; we need to stay the course; we need to be All In with Christ.

Would others know that you are Catholic by the way you

act and speak? Do you share your Catholic faith with

others? Do you defend your Catholic faith when the

situation arises or do you remain silent? Do you pray in

public before meals? Pray for the strength and courage

to be a joyful witness of our Catholic faith when the

opportunity presents itself. Let us become the radiant

light and bold witness that we are called to be!

The second collection this week is for our maintenance fund. Live-streaming Mass during this pandemic has enabled us to hone our technological skills, but it has also shown that we need to invest in better sound equipment so that we may continue to offer the celebration of the Mass to our homebound parishioners.

Two months ago, you raised $40,000 to make up for lost Offertory income during the Cathedral’s closure. This was a generous and meaningful commitment by you to secure our financial footing. However, even with these additional funds, we will still run a $37,000 deficit, even with Government assistance. Therefore, I am humbly appealing to you again to support our efforts at stemming the losses. On Tuesday, June 23, we will have another special Day of Stewardship. I ask for your prayers and financial assistance. As always, I am grateful for both. Utilizing Faith Direct is the easiest way to support our parish. Enrolling with a recurring account is a safe and convenient way to manage your Cathedral stewardship. Our parish number is VA326 www.faithdirect.net
