Welcome to Issue 27. Lots of reviews this time,

along with news on the Cliff / Shadows tour and

Kim Humphreys seems to be making a recovery, and is

As this looks like being the last 2G4W before

WAITIN‟ ON A WOMAN (With ANDY GRIFFITH)

I must say that I didn‟t know too much about

this guy (thought he was a guitar-slingin‟ Nashville dude

with the white cowboy hat) – but, boy, can he play! This

2

is a real “Teleganza” – the guests on “Cluster Pluck” are

James Burton, Vince Gill, Albert Lee, John Jorgensen,

Brent Mason, Redd Volkaert and Steve Wariner – „nuff

said!! Only 5 vocals (all good, with a variety of guitar

sounds) and a wide variety of country rock / surf / rock /

jazz and other styles make this a great album! Support

from steel, banjo, acoustic and other guitars contribute.

Brad has made 7 other albums – “Who Needs Pictures”

(1999), Part II (2001), “Mud On The Tires” (2003),

“Time Well Wasted” (2005), “Christmas” (2006), “5th

Gear” (2007) and “American Saturday Night” (2009) – if

they‟re half as good as this, worth tracking down!

MARK KNOPFLER

“GET LUCKY” VERTIGO (Aust) 2708674

BORDER REIVER / HARD SHOULDER / YOU CAN‟T

BEAT THE HOUSE / BEFORE GAS AND TV /

MONTELEONE / CLEANING MY GUN / THE CAR WAS

THE ONE / REMEMBRANCE DAY / GET LUCKY / SO

FAR FROM THE CLYDE / PIPER TO THE END

This is an ALL VOCAL CD (I know, this is an

Instrumental newsletter!) but Mark is a fantastic guitar

player, with a unique style. This album is t reflective,

sombre, and delicate, with shades of the “Local Hero”

soundtrack – one of the true “classics”. There‟s a touch

of that Celtic feel from the film, but overall, lots of that

special Knopfler guitar. I love it!

LOS JETS

“300 WAVES (ROCK THE PIER) (SOUNDTRACK

FROM THE FILM)”

H.M.R. (Spain) H.M.R. 078 TAKE FIVE / GONZALES / SPLASH / SURF SAMBA /

VENUS / BUDA‟S TAVERN / WAITING FOR THE TRAIN /

JEZABEL / THE FLIGHT OF THE BUMBLE BEE /

BOMBORA / SO WHAT / CHARIOT / BOHABDILL / THE

VALIANT / VOYAGE AROUND THE MOON / HUSKY

TEAM / DRIFTIN‟ / DIAMONDS

There is also a DVD available, with footage of

surfing, waves and such. This is essentially the

soundtrack, and follows the recent penchant for releasing

compilations of previously issued material. These tracks

are culled from various Los Jets albums, and are highly

recommended, especially if you don‟t have the „source‟

albums.

TOM PRINCIPATO & PETE KENNEDY

“FINGERS ON FIRE”

POWERHOUSE (US) POW-113 OPUS ONE / THE KANGAROO / HERE, THERE, AND

EVEYWHERE / AIN‟T MISBEHAVIN‟ / SOUTH /

BROADWAY / IT DON‟T MEAN A THING (IF IT AIN‟T

GOT THAT SWING) / ECHO BOOGIE / STEALIN‟ CORN /

HONEYSUCKLE ROSE / SLIPPED DISC / TOM‟S TUNE /

THE FLINTSTONES THEME

This is another great “find” – I‟d heard of

Principato before (his “Blazing Telecasters” CD with

Danny Gatton was one of my favourites) but not heard of

Kennedy before. This is a guitar album, through and

through. Lots of western swing, jazz, Travis / Atkins

pickin‟ – all tastefully done. From the jazzy reading of Sy

Oliver‟s “Opus One” to “The Flintstones Theme”, this a

hoot! Tracks 6-13 were recorded live at The Cellar Door,

Washington D.C. on 30 December 1978 – wish I‟d been

there! But wait, there‟s more – at the end of the CD

there‟s a promo for Ibanez Guitars at “Giant Music”!

THE VENTURES & THE (FABULOUS) WAILERS

“TWO CAR GARAGE”

BLUE HORIZON (US) BH 100-1 I HEAR YOU KNOCKIN‟ KEEP A KNOCKIN‟ / SURF

RIDER (aka SPUDNICK) / REBEL-ROUSER / WAILIN‟ /

OUT OF OUR TREE / LET‟S GO / TEQUILA / NEEDLES

3

AND PINS / BEAT GUITAR / DIRTY ROBBER / WILD

WEEKEND / CALIFORNIA SUN / TALL COOL ONE /

WHEN YOU WALK IN THE ROOM / WIPE OUT / ROAD

RUNNER / BLACK IS BLACK / LOUIE LOUIE

A slightly unusual release, and hard to get, for

some reason. Most of the tracks are Ventures / Wailers

standards, some by the Ventures, some by the Wailers,

and a few with members of both groups. About half of

the tracks are vocals(!) and saxophone features

prominently (which won‟t please all) but this is good

departure from the norm. On the Ventures side, Bob

Bogle, Gerry, Nokie, Bob Spaulding (as it‟s spelt in the

sleeve notes) and Don all take turns on lead guitar, and

do a good job. I thought the Wailers tracks („Wailin‟,

„Tall Cool One‟ and „Road Runner‟ (all covered by the

Ventures) may be done by both groups, but these are new

versions by the Wailers. A good one.

Winding is (was?) a trombonist – but don‟t let

that put you off. His hit “More (Theme From „Mondo

a „jazz goes surf‟ album. The whole album is included

here, with bonus tracks. Kenny Burrell contributes fine

guitar, so this is really a Kenny Burrell album! Jean

Jacques Perrey plays the ondioline (look that up in your

Funk „n‟ Wagnell) and the CD is filled out with a couple

of organist Jimmy Smith tracks and some solo Burrell‟s

too. All tracks from the Verve and Cadet labels. Great

A couple more compilations from the prolific

Trev. The track names speak for themselves. The London

told me of plans for (seemingly) hundreds of new

projects, so stay tuned!

LIVE MUSIC!!

BOOKER T (by George Geddes)

“I was fortunate to catch Booker T at a sellout London

gig at the Bush Hall, a venue I had not previously visited,

one of a very few UK dates for the Stax legend. The

others were the Southern Fried Festival in Perth (where

he shared the bill with Los Lobos) and, believe it or not,

the Cambridge Folk Festival. Support act for the London

gig was Mike Batt protégé Florence Rawlings and her

excellent nine piece band and singers.

Promoting his new album “Potato Hole”, the line up was

Booker T (Hammond organ), Troy Gonyea (guitar),

Ronnie James Weber (bass), Marc Ford (guitar) and

drummer Darian Gray. Gonyea and Weber are former

members of the Fabulous Thunderbirds, and Ford

(brother of Robben) was in the Black Crowes. A cracking

band to support such a legend. At one point, Ford broke a

string during a solo but never missed a beat, waiting until

the number finished before dashing off to re-string. The

set mixed tracks from the new CD with MG‟s classics

including an extended “Hang „Em High”, plus a few

well-known vocals which Booker T modestly murmured

that he had some involvement in. Possibly one of the

most laidback and modest front men I have seen, but one

who deserves his legendary status. Catch him if you can.”

JOE ROBINSON

“Joe is smokin‟ – the kid is a killer. I arrived

late-ish, to avoid the support noise .. it was Bryan

(Browne) .. I arrived mid-set, thankfully .. feeling stupid.

Bryan was his usual good self .. Joe joined him for a

great acoustic set .. shades of Phil and Tommy.

After a short break (these kids actually had a

short break .. they‟re yet to learn that there are no

SHORT breaks) Joe and band came on .. Phil‟s

(Emmanuel) old bass player and Goldrush co-hort Chris

Haigh, and a young guy on drums.

The thing that struck me most with Joe is how

relaxed he appeared .. he just seemed to be enjoying

himself, smiling and playing effortlessly. And brilliantly.

His Tele work was so good, I forgive him for

those vocals.

I bought his two CD‟s, and as good as they are,

they remind me of early Tommy (which is not a bad

thing) and I‟d heard it before.

If Joe is the bench-mark, it‟s a bloody high

bench. Pics and review to follow.”

Bryce Grainger (2G4W token Sydneysider)

FUTURAS v GREASY HAWAIIANS

I couldn‟t make it to the gig, but love the promo:

“The ever swingin‟ Futuras and those titans of

transcendendental twang, The Greasy Hawaiians, are

meeting up for another frantic night of tag teamin‟ instro

action.

It‟s R‟n‟B v Surf, Mosrite v Fender, Hammond

Organ v that crazy Electric Sitar ... you get the picture.

All the action‟s at the usual haunt, the Town

Hall Hotel, Sat 14 November from 10:00 pm.”

CLIFF RICHARD & THE SHADOWS Vs THE

BEATLES

Again, a show I didn‟t attend – did anyone go to

give us a review?

ATLANTICS TOUR

The Atlantics recently completed a „mini tour‟

around Sydney‟s environs. Thanks to Mandy Hall for

details. Day 1 was part of the Manly Festival of surfing –

at the Manly Boatshed on 5 November. According to the

organizers, it was the largest crowd of all the shows at

the Boatshed.

Friday 6 November saw the boys at Notes (a

new live music venue) in Newtown, just down from the

Enmore, on a double bill with Lonnie Lee.

Brass Monkey in Cronulla was the venue for

Saturday‟s gig, also with Lonnie Lee. Lots of friends

turned up, including Ian Harris, Steve Flack and our

Sydney correspondent, Bryce Grainger, who bravely

went along with a mystery illness. He reports that the

group were (in order of longevity) Jim, Martin, Michael

and Jeff (Cripps). Halfway through the set, Peter took

over on drums, and Michael broke a string. No further

news, as Bryce had to leave early. Mandy continues “The

place was really full, so it didn‟t help when the air

conditioning failed . That didn‟t seem to worry the crowd

though, they stayed to the end and loved the show.”

Day 4 was at the Heritage Hotel in Bulli (not far

from Wollongong, and a really great venue with good

sound), a late afternoon gig, again with Lonnie Lee. A

lot of people there for both Lonnie and the Atlantics.

NEWS

BRIAN ANDERSON IS 70!!

Brian Anderson celebrated his 70th

birthday with

a musical afternoon at Cheltenham RSL on 8 November.

Lots of muso‟s and friends attended, including Ken

Hutchison, John Tippett, John Cosgrove, Bill Jeffreys,

John Faubel, Con Anag, Noel Tressider, Harold Frith,

Judy Cannon and many others. A great day was had by

all.

Brian started with The Planets, one of Melbourne‟s first

rock groups, on drums, later switching to bass with

Country Road and Rainbow. Happy birthday Brian!

SHADOZ CD’s & DVD”s

I have a LIMITED number of CDR‟s and DVD-

R‟s of some of the acts that appeared at “Shadoz 2009”.

Contact me for details. Bear in mind that these are not

professional recordings, but valuable memories!

PHIL EMMANUEL

Bryce Grainger reports that Phil Emmanuel has

two CD‟s out, both for download. “Thorns and Thistles”

and “Nashville Downunder”. One site says “available in

stores soon”. The artists are “Geoff Yelaska and Phil

Emmanuel”, so I don‟t know if they‟re a duo, or if Phil is

in the background.

Speaking of Phil, I‟ve just found out that he

„sneaked‟ into Melbourne recently. He was billed as

guest for UK group Budgie at the Corner Hotel in

Richmond on 18 November. In ususl Geoff Jermy

fashion, I found out about the gig two days later!!

ED MATZENIK

Ed is active on YouTube – check out his videos

by searching for Ed Matzenik – also features tracks by

his son, Ezra Lee.

7

BEN ROGERS

Also travelling the YouTube route is Ben

Rogers – he has a new clip called “Southern Right

Surfer” with a video of whales and surfers that Nikki

(bass player) shot at Logan‟s Beach, Warrnambool, with

an accompanying piece of music composed to suit the

scene.

BARRY ROY

Barry Roy reports: “I have just been presented

with the best present an old guitar player could ever have

– my own Artist Signature Model guitar from Houston

Texas – what a proud old bugga I am.”

DVD’s

I‟ve finally tracked down the DVD‟s “Crazy –

The Hank Garland Story” and “Telstar”. Both tragic

stories in their own way, and both very watchable.

“Crazy” has pathos, contains some beautiful guitar

music, and a sad insight into the great country / jazz

guitarist. “Telstar”, the story of producer Joe Meek, is an

eye opener. Lots of swearing and fighting in this story of

a “tragic homosexual genius”. Good portrayals of The

Tornados and Outlaws too.

SYDNEY SHADOWS CLUB

The Sydney Shadows Club No. 2 was officially

launched on Sunday 8 November and is called Sydney

Shadows Music Club and shares a venue (alternate

weeks) with Sydney Shadows Club No.1. Tony (Kiek)

and Bazz (Woollett) run No.1, and Adrian (Browne) and

Brian Brown head up No.2. The world is definitely going

mad!

TOURS

GLEN CAMPBELL

Glen is probably best known to the modern

generation for his many hits – “Wichita Lineman”, “By

The Time I Get To Phoenix”, “Rhinestone Cowboy”,

“Galveston” and other hits, all vocal. But he started as a

guitarist, playing sessions on numerous hits in the early

60‟s. He was part of The “Wrecking Crew” in L.A.

playing on hits by Frank Sinatra, Righteous Brothers,

Monkees, Ray Charles, Nat King Cole, Dean Martin and

many others. He also was a member of The Champs (of

OBITUARIES – GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN

ART FERRANTE

We reported in “2G4W” #21 the death of Lou

Teicher. Now it‟s sad to tell you that his partner Art

Ferrante has also passed on. He was born September 7,

1921, and died on September 19, 2009. The duo, playing

twin pianos, had hits with Theme From Exodus, Theme

From The Apartment, Tonight and Midnight Cowboy.

The two met while studying at a New York school, later

launching a concert career, including nightclub

appearances, classical and pops orchestral shows and

recordings. They experimented with prepared pianos,

adding paper, sticks, rubber, wood blocks, metal bars,

chains, glass, mallets and other objects to piano string

bends to produce a variety of sounds that sometimes

resembled percussion instruments and electronic sounds.

Ferrante & Teicher ceased performing in 1989.
