JUDGES' REPORT
The 51st Annual Book Design Awards have set new records in the number of entries and categories and presented the judges with a wonderful selection of titles and diverse design styles.
In February 2003 a panel of six general judges and six specialist judges set about the interesting and challenging task of judging the 530 entries in the 51st awards to select the best-designed books published in Australia in 2002 across 23 ca tegories.
The new categories added to this year's awards were - Best Designed Exhibition Catalogue or Book, Best Designed Nonfiction (text) and Best Designed Non-fiction (illustrated). The Best Designed Exhibition Catalogue or Book was included as a distinct category as many of these books have struggled to find a niche in existing categories and because of the growth in publishing in this sector. To cope with the overwhelming number of entries in the non-fiction section, and the difficulty of comparing illustrated with non-illustrated books, the two new non-fiction categories emerged.
In selecting titles, the judges considered how well the designer(s) satisfied their brief; they looked for imagination, originality, skill and flair; creativity in overcoming constraints inherent in the title and brief; and how legibility, format and organisation of text and illustration suited the functional requirements of the reader.
Despite many excellent and well-executed designs, there was a general feeling among the judges that boundaries weren't being pushed and that a significant number of entries followed 'tried and tested' styles. The judges pondered whether this might be due to the current climate for book sales with sales and marketing departments wanting to play safe rather than risk new directions. The judges also observed that there was a reliance on stock photography to create the look, feel or atmosphere of a book rather than using colour, type, concept, space, composition to find new and original solutions.
The judges recognise the many and varied challenges and constraints faced by designers, particularly time pressures, but they would like to encourage designers to challenge the boundaries and show publishing clients that a new approach can attract attention and actually generate sales.
The judges would like to thank Joyce Thorpe Nicholson for allowing us the honour of naming the hall of fame after her. Joyce has been a dedicated supporter of Australian Book Design for more than 20 years and it is with pleasure that we announce the inaugural Joyce Thorpe Nicholson Design Hall of Fame.
Congratulations and thanks to the designers and publishers for the many entries in this year's awards - the very finest of which are featured as finalists in this catalogue.

Nada has been a finalist for several APA design awards and commended for her cover 'Last Drinks' by Andrew McGahan. Her work ranges from mass market to literary fiction to all kinds of non-fiction, including business, history, politics, biographies and cookbooks. Nada recently left her position as Design Manager at Allen & Unwin to work as a freelance designer.
Rowena Cseh has worked in the book industry for more than twenty years. Previously a bookseller, she is now the Publisher of Good Reading which is an independent magazine devoted to books and reading.

She is now retired from full-time publishing and works as a part-time consultant to children's publishers.
Carol Keeble is currently the owner/manager of the children's specialist bookshop Reading Matters in Rozelle, Sydney which she opened in 1995 with her partner Colin. These days Wendy wears a number of hats running her own "book-related" business that encompasses publishing a small list, consulting on publishing projects, project management. copy-writing and product development. Most recently Wendy studied computer graphic design and so has another string to her bow. She is about to embark on her first design of a book series after many years in publish ing tell ing designers what to do. She now has a ful l understanding of just what a skill book designing is and how she must have driven many a designer totally mad.

Molly also teaches and studies new media.
TH E JOYCE THORPE NICHOLSON DESIGNER 'S HALL OF FAME
This Award IS given periodically to a designer who has made a significant contribution to the standards and quality of
Australian book des1gn. The designer IS nom1nated by someone from within the industry and previous recipients have
been Patrick Coyle, Alec Bolton, Arthur Stokes and Harry Williamson. The winner of this year's Hall of Fame Award is
George Dale, nominated by Leonie Stott, Design Manager, Penguin Books Australia and supported by author Paul
Jennings and Penguin Publishing Director, Robert Sessions.
George Dale was appointed as Penguin 's first in-house designer in 1974, having carried out several freelance
commissions prior to that date whilst he was still teaching art and design at Preston Institute of Technology in
Melbourne.
Since that time George has designed many hundreds of hardback and paperback titles (both text and covers) for
Penguin, many of which have been successful in design awards, as well as commercially. (A conservative estimate
of the total number of books George has designed over his long career at Penguin puts it at well over 20001)
Whilst George has successfully solved many design challenges (among them, the first ever hardback books for Penguin,
a series of illustrated social studies texts for Australian schools, picture books by Ron Brooks, Keith McEwan, Craig Smith
and Terry Denton) perhaps his most valuable collaborations have been with the bestselling children's author, Paul
Jennings, and with one of Australia's 'national treasures', Michael Leunig.
With Paul Jennings, George has pushed some of the boundaries, both in text and cover designs. Together they have
experimented with coloured illustrations in novels, with cut-outs and other finishes on covers, and with graphic novels,
illustrated diaries and part works.
Where Michael Leunig is concerned, it is no exaggeration to say that a number of Michael's most successful books
would almost certainly not have happened at all without George's quiet determination and ski lful reading of the artistic
mind. He has produced many unusual and hugely successful books with artists such as Michael Leunig, Bruce Petty,
Peter Nicholson and John Spooner.
For many years George was in charge of the design studio at Penguin. In this role he was the mentor of many ta lented
designers who went on to become widely recognised. He has had a significant effect on the way in which book design
is carried out in Australia , as a teacher, as a judge, and as an art director. He now enjoys a role at Penguin which gives
him the freedom to work on projects for which his design skills are especially suited .

THE AUSTRALIAN BOOK CONNECTION BEST DESIGNED BOOK OF THE YEAR
judges' comments The whole design - from the particularly lush hot pink Thai fabric cover to the beautiful
internals - elevates this book from a cookbook to an object of desire. A clear winner- simple yet extravagant,
traditional yet contemporary, Thai Food's design reflects both the simplicity and grandness of its title. Thai Food shows great attention to detail from the multi -coloured tail ribbons to the exquisite photographs and vibrant colours
used . In judging this year's overall winner, Thai food stood out from the crowd.

THE McPHERSON'S PRINTING BEST DESIGNED COVER OF THE YEAR
judges' comments The pendulum clearly swung toward The Diviner's Son in this category with its combination
of sophistication , quirkiness and imaginative use of typography to convey movement. The selection and the cropping
of the suburban-industrial image on Hot Iron Corrugated Sky gives the book a gritty and contemporary feel. John Bell
commands attention with the piercing gaze of the subject used to great effect with the elegant simplicity of the
typography. The cover of Contagion powerfully conveys its subject in an imaginative and evocative way .

THE HODDER HEADLINE YOUNG DESIGNER OF THE YEAR
judges' comments The judges were excited and impressed by the work submitted in this category, and selecting a winner was tough. The portfolio of Ellie Exarchos stood out with a consistently high standard of design across a very diverse range of briefs. Worthy of a special mention are the works submitted by Marion Duke, Christa Edmonds, and of course Melissa Fraser- who designed Thai Food, the Best-designed Book of the Year. The judges look forward to seeing more examples of their work in years to come.

THE LAMB PRINT BEST DESIGNED EXHIBITION BOOK OR CATALOGUE
judges' comments This category was a challenge to judge given the vastly different project budgets. The
judges felt the strongest designs allowed the featured artwork to be the dominant visual element. The design of A Vision Splendid is modest in format but beautifully executed. Appropriate to its subject matter, attention has
been paid to every detail- from the subtle colours to the delicate tracing paper leading in to the title page. The
braveness and originality shown in the design of The Office of Utopic Procedures, through clever typography and
stock choice, made it standout despite being a humble mono! The judges were impressed by Encounter's high
production values and the way the design made the works featured come alive on the page.

judges' comments The quality of work presented in this category was high. The websites and COs were generally well designed, easy to navigate and aesthetically appealing. The quality was maintained throughout
individual entries and given that they all contained considerable breadth and depth of content, this is a
commendable achievement. The entries demonstrated good use of the medium to bring the material alive,
and consideration of the specific audiences and their ways of accessing the content was also evident.

THE BETTER READ THAN DEAD BOOKSHOP BEST DESIGNED LITERARY NON-FICTION BOOK
judges' comments John Bell emerged as a clear winner. The power of the cover image is enhanced by the
simplicity and restra int of the typography. The cover design is complemented by its elegant internal design . With
its beautifully designed end flaps and invit ing chapter openers, the design of The Carpet Wars succeeds in capturing the exoticism of its subject matter. The Philosopher's Dog grabbed the judges attention with its imaginative use of
the cover image running across the front cover, back cover and flaps. The unusual cropping of the image also
enhanced the design.

THE PENGUIN BOOKS AUSTRALIA BEST DESIGNED COMMERCIAL FICTION BOOK
judges' comments The judges noted a shift in style in this category, away from the formula commercial look
towards a more literary feel. The design of Perfect Match follows this trend, taking an interesting approach to the
genre. The combination of the cover typography and image is indeed a 'perfect match'! The hip and groovy designs
of The Basic Eight and Watch Your Mouth demonstrate a clever new way of packaging commercial fiction that holds
strong appeal for the twenty-something, fashion -conscious target market. The judges were impressed by the clever
use of type and spot varnish. Upside Down, Inside Out unashamedly embraces its commercial market.

THE GALAXY BOOKSHOP BEST DESIGNED SCIENCE FICTION OR FANTASY BOOK
judges' comments This is a challenging category for designers because the genre has such a well defined
look which 'cries out' to its audience. The judges would like to broaden this category by encouraging entries by
designers of children's fantasy or science-fiction. The decision to award only a winning entry reflected the limited
range and number of titles entered. The designer of Old Ridley has presented the wonderful illustrations to great
effect, enhanced by the clever use of typography.

THE THOMSON LEARNING BEST DESIGNED PRIMARY EDUCATION BOOK
judges' comments The Fast Track series won this category on the strength of its internal design . The layout
is clear and accessible and at the same time, involving and lively for students- a highly appropriate design for
the content and level. The World Heritage in Australia series is a high-quality production featuring a beautiful
series of cover designs with colour schemes that mirror the content. The selection and placement of photographic
images in the internals enhances the learning experience and the text design works to support the information.
The designers of the Picture Australia 's Past series have ensured that the historical photographs featured on each
page appropriately capture the reader's attention . The internal layout is clear and consistent for children to follow
with visual clues such as dates treated consistently to assist learning.

judges' comments The joint winners in this category both meet their respective design briefs incredibly well.
The text design of Tapis Volant 1 encourages comprehension of the content without being distracting and a fabulous
colour palette helps make the pages a pleasure to read . The magazine feel of Hai lma! succeeds in capturing a sense
of Japanese teenage culture that would have strong appeal for the target audience. Film Asia is an example of great
contemporary design - it is clean and classy and treats students with respect.

THE BROWN PRIOR ANDERSON BEST DESIGNED TERTIARY AND FURTHER EDUCATION BOOK
judges' comments The judges placed more emphasis on internal design given its important role in helping
students navigate through huge amounts of text. The very user-friendly design of Financial Management (3rd edition)
demonstrates an outstanding use of one-colour design and effective use of white space. Management (3rd edition)
has a sophisticated cover design and shows great restraint in the selection of the colour palette for the internals.

THE AMCOR DISPLAYS BEST DESIGNED CHILDREN'S SERIES
judges' comments The judges were attracted by designs that were 'out of the box' in this category rather
than a formulaic approach . The winn ing and highly commended entries were selected because they could be
clearly identified as a series. Clever design features were used to define a coherent look and allow enough scope
for variation to make each title unique. The Dulcie and Dud series design was a standout. The fun covers and
simple internal design would have strong appeal for children .

THE GRIFFIN PRESS BEST DESIGNED YOUNG ADULT BOOK
judges' comments The judges were drawn to the books that demonstrated more conceptual involvement by the
designer. With its sophisticated and original design and strong crossover appeal from young adult to adult markets,
The Diviner's Son emerged as a clear winner. The bold cover design of The Song of an Innocent Bystander would also
appeal to a broad market and the clever use of spot varnish on the cover conveys a strong sense of the genre. Despite
an extremely tight budget and timeframe, the designer/s of Too Flash have combined unusual typography, picture
treatment and cover colours to create a book that feels new and different, successfully challenging the formula for
this genre. The designers have dared to go out on a limb, and the gamble has clearly paid off.

THE TIEN WAH PRESS BEST DESIGNED CHILDREN'S NON-FICTION BOOK
judges' comments The challenge of designing books in this category lies in using good design principles
to make page designs enticing and lively for children while avoiding the tendency towards overly busy and fussy
layouts that compete with the text. The quirky and engaging cover of 1 DO Australian Poems for Children elicited
a strong response from the judges and was seen as a great way to lure kids (or their parents!) to poetry. The
simplicity and restraint shown in the internal design is perfect for the subject matter. Could a Tyrannosaurus Play Table Tennis? gave existing material a fresh new treatment while managing to be very informative, easy to follow
and fun at the same time.
