Electricity generation from RES in Austria

First place in the share of renewable energy for electricity production in EU-27

Share of RES : appr. 62%

Generation is traditionally dominated by large hydro power plants

Green Electricity Act 2003

National implementation of Directive 2001/77/EC

Feed-in-tariff System:

guaranteed tariff (amount and duration)

Electricity supplier are obliged to purchasegreen electricity

Funding by: Final customers and suppliers

Amendment of Green Electricity Act 2006 – Modification of promotion mechanism

Approval of green of electricity plant by the province (regional government)Management of the promotion mechanism by an independend Green Electricity settlement Center (OeMAG)Operator of green electricity plant has to sign a contract with OeMAG to get the feed-in tariffTariff determined by a decree of the minister of economic affairsNew contracts with Operators:

first come first servefinal customers pay a lump sum fee per metering pointObligation for Electricity suppliers to buy green electricity for a fixed transfer price

Promotion of green electricity (Green Electricity Act)

Financial support for

small hydro (up to 10 MW): feed-in tariffs

medium hydro (10 to 20 MW): investment subsidy

other green electricity (biomass, wind, …) : feed-in tariffs

Target: 10% „other“ eco-electricity until 2010

From 0,9% in 2002 to 8% in 2007

Financial support: about 240 Mio. €/year
