    President’sReportWellsomuchhaschangedsincemylastreport.TheemergenceoftheCoronaVirushaschangedthewaytheclubnowfunctionsbeyondrecognition.WehavecanceledmanyClubactivitiesincludingtheSalmonPond’sCastingDayandtheTigerHutFlyTyingSessions.TheCommitteehasclosedboththeClubshacksuntil(hopefully)the15thofJune.Idon’tthinkanyofuscouldhavepredictedthesechangesearlyintheyear!TheClubhastransferredmanyactivitiestothedigitalworldinnosmallpartwiththehelpofSteveButlerandTimLewis.BothCommitteeandGeneralMeetingsarenowonZoomwiththeAprilmeetinggetting40membersonline.ThereisaregularThursdaynightflytyingsessionwithguests.Sofar,wehavehadCraigGranquistandBrentBowermantyingbreamflies,PaulMarkeydoingashrimppattern,DellywitharabbitfurMudeye,NormCribbinwithaMudeyeandaTyennadryflyandLaurieMatchamshowingusaJassidbeetleandanamazingStonefly.SteveButleralsoaddedaninternationalflavourbyinvitingSteveDallytotiefromAmericaat0400localtime!Theclubsendseverymemberanemaildescribingthesesessionssopleasejoinin.ForthosewhomissedtheliveshowthereisalinkontheClubwebpagetotheshortvideoclips.Ifyougotothe‘Activities’banner,thenclickon‘ZoomPresentations’.Thereweretheusualintelligentquestionstotheguesttyersandmuchfriendlybanteramongsttheviewers.IlearnedseveralgoodtipsaboutfinishingoffchenillebodiesandhowtogettheperfectJassidbodyprofileinredwool.ThebestquotefromSmithytoLaurieabouthisStoneflypatternwas”Itlookslikethatthingjustcrawledupyourviceandsatonit!”TheCommitteecontinuestoworkhardplanningoutPostCoronaRecoveryPlan,includinghavingacastingdayintheoffseasontoreplaceSalmonPondsandre-schedulingtheannualdinner.Asmentioned,theClubshacksarecloseduntil15thJuneandweencourageyoutosocialdistancewhenutilisingthem.TheFowlerTrophyclosedatehasbeenextendeduntiltheSeptember21stGeneralMeeting.FishingreportshavebeenfewandfarbetweenwithsomememberstakingontheDerwentRiver.SteveBhasputupsomefootageofabreamcaptureontheclubZoomspace.IthinkthereareplansforaDerwentFlyfishingDayandwewillkeepyouposted.Iencourageyoutomaintainyoursocialnetworksinfly-fishingviatheavailabletechnologyanddropeachotheralinewhenyoucan.Astheisolationrestrictionseaseuppleaseengageinourclubactivitiessowewillbereadyfornexttroutseason.TightLines

    EditorialThisissuehassomegreatarticlesandheraldstherampingupoftheClubsonlinepresence.Thetroutfishingisessentiallyoverfortheseasonandtheglobalpandemichasensuredthateveryoneisstayingput.

    Whatbettertimetoinvestigatetheonlinepossibilitiesforflytyingwhilstwewaitforthingstocomebacktosomethingapproachingnormal.Wehavesomanybrilliantflytyersthatarereadyandwillingtosharetheirideas,tipsskillsandpatternsandthe‘Zoom’meetingsthathavebegunarenotonlyagreatthingtolookforwardtoeachweekbuthavethepotentialtocreatealibraryofonlineresourcesforusandotherstoshare.WelldonetoSteveButler(pictured)andTimLewisfortheirbrilliantefforts!     Taupo2020NewZealandCommonwealthFlyFishingChampionshipsTheCommonwealthflyfishingchampionshipswereheldinNewZealand’sNorthIslandbasedinTaupo17thto23rdMarch.ClubmemberswhoparticipatedinonewayoranotherincludedMalcolmCrosse,JasonGarrettJr,GlennEggleton,ChrisMedwin,WayneBelletteandmyself.MalcolmputtinghishanduponceagainasInternationalorganiser,JasonastheCoachfortheAustralianmen’steam,ChrisandmyselfparticipatingintheCommonwealthsandGlennassistingTomJarman(coachfortheAustralianladiesteam).Malcolm,ChrisandIhavewrittensomewords,onreflectionofourtrip.

    MalcolmCrosseWiththeannouncementinNorthernIrelandin2018ofthenextCommonwealthFlyFishingChampionshipstobeheldinNewZealandintheAutumnof2020agreatdealofexcitementwasgeneratedandmanyoftheNorthernHemispherecountrieswerekeentotravelthelongdistancestocompete.

    Foranumberofreasons,theinitialarrangementsfortheeventstalledandatonestagetheeventlookedlikebeingmovedtoScotland

    FollowingonfromphonecallsfromtheCFFAboardIvolunteeredmyservicestohelpwiththecommitteefromSportFlyFishNewZealandwww.flyfishing.org.nztotakeafreshlookatarrangingtheeventinthe“Landofthelongwhitecloud.”ApartfromatentativebookingwiththeWairakeiresortwww.wairakei.co.nznothingmuchelsewasinplaceandwiththehelpofGarethGodfrey(PresidentSFNZ),LloydStruthers,JohannesKrillPeterScottandDougSnellasubcommitteewasformed.

    AftermuchdiscussionthefiveanglingsectorswerearrivedattheattachedGrouptoSectorrotationdetailsthem.Theusualfoodandtransportarrangementsalsowereputinplace.

    Theactualfishingwasover2.5daysandwithfivesessionstobefishedmadeforlongdaysoftravellingandangling.ForfutureCFFCIwouldsuggestthattheeventbespreadover5daysmakingforamuchmorerelaxedevent.

    OneofthebigsurpriseswastheinclusionoftheTongariroRiver,whichwasnotapopularchoicebysomeofthelocalsasitisnotfishedbymanyofthelocalsatthistime.Thisriverprovedtobeagreatchoiceandenjoyedbyall.

    TheusualarrangementsfortheopeningandclosingceremoniesneededtobesortedandwiththeeventitfollowedthattherewouldbeaMaoriwelcomealsothelocalMaorigroupwereinvolvedinthemanyofthepermitsrequiredforustoruntheevent.SomeoftheothersbeingNewZealandFishandGameNewZealanddepartmentofconservation,LakeRotoairaTrust,NewZealandpowerauthorities.

    MostofthepermitsandpermissionsbeingablysortedbyPaulDewarwhocameonboardastheOperationsdirector.

    Unfortunately,IhadtoreturnbacktoTasmanianbeforetheteamsallbookedintotheresortinto,howeverwithmostoftheplansinplacetheshowwentaheadasplanned.WiththeinterventionoftheCoronavirussomechangeshadtobemadeandtheeventwasabletobeconcludedwithsomechanges.Likeonlysixpeopletoadiningtableattheclosingdinneretc.

    Mythanksgotoalltheteams,controllers,sectorjudgesandtherestofthesupportstaff.Withoutthemitwouldhavebeenastruggle.

    InclosingitwasindeedandhonourforbothKayleneandItobeawardedLifemembershipoftheCFFA.

    Iwritethisfromthecomfortofmyquarantineshack,asmall14daypricetopay,forrepresentingAustraliaattheCommonwealthFlyfishingchampionshipinNewZealand.Havingplentyoftimetoreflectontheweekspracticeandcompetition,andforensicallydissectmypoorersessions,Ifindmyfondestmemoriesarehangingoutasateam,whichIfindinterestingasflyfishingisquiteoftenasolitarysport.Beinginvolvedinateam,doesofferplentyofopportunitytosharedifferenttechniquesandlearnallsortsofskillsfromothers.WiththemainreasonIfishcompetitionsistolearn,asyou’reattheforefrontofthelatesttechniques,flies,gearetc.Whilegoingawayasateamencouragesthesharingofinformation,likeleadersetups,typesofknotstied,swappingofflies,fishingtechniquesandtipsntricks.Eachtipandtechniquecanbecomeanextrafishduringasession.Duringthecompetitionwefishedfivedifferentvenueswitha3hrsessionsoneach.MyfirstsessionwasonLakeKuratuawhereIcaught23fishandfinished1stinmygroupforthatsession.I’veputtogetherawriteupofthissession.FormysecondsessionIwasontheotherlake,Rotoaria.Thesessionstartedwell,thenthefishseemedtoslow,Icaught3fishtofinish7th,whilemyboatpartnercaught7andwonthesession.OnDay2IfishedtheTongarirointhemorning,andfeltIfishedthesessionpoorly,mybeatcontainedgoodwater,butnothinglikeI’dever

    fishedbefore,veryfastanddeep,soIdidn’tfeelcompletelyconfident,onlycatching4fishIwasluckytofinish4thinthatsession.ThatafternoonIwasofftotheWhanganuiriverformyfourthsession.IfeltmuchmorecomfortableontheWhanganuiandfoundfishontheoppositesideoftheriverinthedeepslowermovingwateraroundboulders.Thereweresomecrackingfishamongstthe13Irecordedandtheyputmeinto1stforthatsession.Priortoourfinalsessiononthelastday,wespokeaboutleavingnothingoutthereandtobringithomeasateam.Ifweneededextrainspirationthatwasit,asthewholeteamfishedextremelywell,makinguplotsofteampointstofinishsecondoverallfortheteamsevent.ItwasduringmylastsessionontheWhakapapaIcaughtmyPBforthetrip-a620mmrainbowaround8lb.Addingtomytotalof13,IwonthelastgroupsessionandfinishedthecompetitionoffintheBronzepositionindividually.TeamsaremadeupofmanypeopleandabigthanksmustgotoJasonGarretjrascaptain,andPaulSimmondsasmanager.Bothworkedhardtogetusintomedalwinningcontention,throughorganisingeverything,makingourmeals,drivingusalloverthecountryforpractice,andhelpingusbestprepareforthecompetition.Alsoifyouhaven’talreadyfishedtheNorthIslandNewZealand,doyourselfafavourandgo,lotsofbeautifulfishamongstanamazingsetting.

    AnnaBelletteBoththeAustralianmen’steamandladiesteamweretomeetattheTongariroHotelinTurangiforaweeklongtrainingbeforetheCommonwealthsweretobeginonthe17th.LowrainfallsoveralongperiodoftimecausedtheriverstobelowerthannormalandwarmersotheTongariroriverwasaddedtothesectorlist.Thesectorswere,LakeKuratau,LakeRotoaira,WhakappaRiver,WhanganuiRiverandtheTongariroriver.ThefirsteverAustralianLadiesteamconsistedofKarenBrooksTAS,JaneForsterNSW,KerrynMilliaganACT,MirrianMillerVIC,CaseyPfeifferSAandmyselfasreserve.TomJarmancoachandJaneVincentasmanager.TrainingbeganontheTongariroriver,themen’steamheadingtotheirdestinationandtheladiesheadedtotheLowerTongariro.OnlytheuppersectionnearBluePoolandthelowersectionabout900metersbelowtheTurangi/Taupobridgewasallocatedfortraining.Onarrivalwenoticedfishrisingimmediatelyandconstantlysippingaway.WequicklydiscoveredtheLacewingmothwerethecauseofthecontinualrisesthatwewitnessedtheentiretimewewerethere.Thelocalssayingitwasunusual,andthelowdryspellwasthecause.TheLacewingmothwerealsoreferredtoasthePassionvinehopper.Theydidcausemuchfrustrationforme,Itriedavarietyofmethodstocatchthem,fastflowingwatercausingmydriestodraguntilIfinalhadsuccessswingingwithanintermediateline.Iusedapinkororangetagonthepointandaspiderpatternontopdropper.OnlytwofliesareallowedtobeusedatonetimeontheTongarirowatersbutduringthecompetitionwecouldusethree.Twoseemedtoworkswinging,onceafishtook,theyhittheflyhard.WespentadaywithSteveBrownontheWhanganuiRiverwherehetaughtustheartofswingingflies,tacticsandtechniques.Averyeffectivemethodtouseduringacompandtargetingthesmallerfish,weallquicklypickedupfish.ItisatechniqueIusedthroughouttrainingandinthecomp,anduseditwithmyCzechnymphingrigandtheendofadrift.Tompushingustochallengeourselveseachandeveryday,itwassogoodtohavehimasourmentor.Webondedasateamduringtrainingandwerereadytogo,itwasnowtimetoheadtoWairakeiResortatTaupoforthecommencementoftheflyfishingchampionships.Asthereservemyjobwastohelptheteamduringthechampionships,checkingoutotherbeats,watchinganglersfishandtyingfliesthattheladiesneeded.FliesweretiedbyTomandGlennEggletonprovidedmostoftheriverfliesforeachsessionontheLakes.Ifoundwatchthegirlsfishtheirbeatsrightalongsideourcoachwasanincredibleexperienceinitself.Watching

    andlisteningtohowTomcoachedtheseladiestoproducetheirbestwasamazing.Sessionthree,anditwasmyturntofishontheTongariroriver.MyheartwaspoundingbutIwasready.Itiedover500fliesbeforeIleftTassie,andduringtraininghadmyfavouritesthatIknewthatwouldwork…IknewIwasready.Mybeatwasinthelowersection,notalongbeatbutwidewithanislanddividingthesection.Ithadlongfastwater,deeprunsandshallowwater.Optingtostartatthebottomandheaduptowardsthetopofthebeatwasmyplan.SomesectionsweretoofasttowadebutIgaveitashot.Imanagedtogettwofishhalfwaythroughmysessionondries,andmissedacoupleontheswingintherougherwater.Oneofmyfishmeasuresquitelongsothisputmeinseventhplaceforthissession.IfishedagaininsessionfiveontheWhakapapa,thelastsessionandmyimmediatethoughtswerefifthsessionthewaterwouldbehammered.ItwasamorningsessionandIwasupwellbefore5amandreadytogotocatchthe6ambustomeetmycontroller.Hedrovemetotheriverandshowedmemybeat,whichwasmuchlongerthantheTongarirosectionIfishedthedaybefore,plusheletmeknowthewaterhadn’tbeenfishedonthefourthsessionsoIknewthewaterwasrested.Imanagedtoget14fishinthelowersectionandonly4measured.Thelegallimitwas20cmandmyheartsankwhenthecontrollertoldmeeachtimethatthefishwasnotlongenough.Ididbeginmysessionusingadrydropper,andmanagedtopickupfishrightawayonthesize18pheasanttailnymphwithanickeltungstenbead.Boostingmyconfidence,IcontinuedtohookfishandcontinuedtousethenickelbeadonbothmydrydropperandCzechnymphingrig.SomedidtakethedrybutImissedacouplebecauseIhadtostrikequicklywiththenymphandmuchsloweronthedry.ImanagedtoplaceSeventhonthislastsessionTheAustralianladiesteamcame8thoverall.Iwouldhavetosaythishasbeenanincredibleexperience,itwasgreatbeingpartofanamazingteamandIhavelearntsomuch.MynexttriptoNewZealand’sNorthIslandwillbeoneIamlookingforwardtoandwillbeheadingoutfishingwithawholenewsetofskills.IhaveattachedthelinkfortheCommonwealthFlyFishingChampionships,ithasfinalteamresults.https://commonwealthflyfish2020.co.nz/

    FlyTyingontheWWWThe World Wide Web is a treasure trove ofinformation and tips for the fly tyer. YouTube inparticularrevealsastaggeringnumberofresponsestothemostbasic search. In this sectionof TheVice thefocuswillbeonsomeinterestingtyersandtechniques.If you have any favourites that you think should besharedwithourmemberspleasesendthemin.

    Ihadn’theardaboutmuchabout‘Zoom’whenthelastVicecamebutinthespaceofafewmonthsthingshavecertainlychanged!TheCovid19restrictionshaveseenourmonthlymeetingsgoonlineandmembershavemanagedtologinandparticipatefromthecomfortoftheirhomes.Thishasdevelopedintoflytyingevenings–currentlyheldeachThursdayfrom7.30untilitcomestoanaturalclose!Manymembersoftheclubhavebeenretreatingto‘ZoomRooms’,pouringthemselvesanicedrinkandsettlingintotakepartinsomebrilliantvirtualflytyingsessions.InmyopinionourclubisblessedwithsomeofthebestflytyersinAustralia,ifnottheworld.WehaveseensomebrilliantflytyerssuchasBrentBowerman,TonyDell,NormCribben,PaulMarkey,CraigGranquistandLaurieMatcham.Therehasevenbeenaninternationalflavourwithex-patandnowinternationalcelebritySteveDallyallthewayfromtheOzarks!Thetyinghasbeenofanexceptionalstandardanditisagreatwaytolearnandshareskillsandideas.SteveButlerandTimLewishavedoneabrilliantjobsettingupourClubZoomaccount,organisingandrunningthesemeetingsandeveneditinganduploadingsomeofthetyingtipstoYouTube.YouTubelinkssofararelistedbelowandIwouldrecommendclickingthesubscribebuttontokeepuptodate.Stevehasdoneagreatjobfilmingextrasession,particularlytheLaurieMatcham’sStonefly

    WesternLakesTrip2020Weatherwastobethekeyplanningconsiderationforthisyear’sclubwalkintotheCentralPlateauConservationArea.SixeagerparticipantsDavidYoung,PeteMurphy,PeteLangton,AndrewBlackwood,BruceBarkerandmyselfweretomeetonMonday2ndofMarchforathree-dayfishingadventurearoundtheChristiesCreekarea.WenaturallysoughtleadershipandguidancefromthemostexperiencedmemberofthegroupDavidYoung,whodidnotdisappoint.AnumberofusmetatMienaHotelforaheartymealSundaynightandthenbacktoDavid’sshackforafewwinesandacoachingsessionfromIanStokestoprepareusforthemanychallengeswewouldfaceoverthenextfewdays.MondaymorningsawAndrewarrivefromHobartandwesetoffpickingupBruceontheway.PeteMurphyhadofferedtodrivethepackstotheendofthefour-wheeldrivetrackpastAdaLagoonwhichhedid,demonstratinghismasteryoffour-wheeldriving,justanotheroneofhismanyfinelyhonedskills.BasecampwastobesetupoverlookingasmallunnamedbodyofwaterontheEasternsideofChristy’sLagoon,whichwereachedbymidafternoontoseeDunsonthewaterandagoodsizedrisingfishtauntingus,oneandahalfcastsfromtheshore.AnafternoonadventurewashadtryingtospotfishinChristy’sLagoonwithoutsuccess.Ourmeticulousplanningaroundtheweathernowcametotheforewiththeovernighttemperatureplungingto2CandeventheexperiencedcamperAndrewwasheardtocomment,‘Iwasonlyjustwarmenoughlastnight’.Tuesday,ourfirstfulldayofseriousfishing,sawgroupseagertoachieve.

    Somediscussiontookplacemainlyabouthowtosolvesomeseriousworldissuesandthenweheadedofftoexplorethesurrounds.DuringthisexplorationPeteMcaughtagoodfishoutofthefirstChristy’screeklakeonlyastonesthrowfrombasecampinaneasterlydirectionandthenwentontoTerryTarnandlandedwhatwastobecomethefishofthetripan8lbbrowninexcellentcondition.OtheroutcomesofthedayincludedPeteLlandingagoodsizedfishatthesamelakeasPeteM,DavidspottingagoodsizedfishinLakeY,AndrewspottingfishinChristy’sLagoonandIspottedagoodsizedbrownaboutakilometreupChristy’screektowardsLunkaLake.Allfishwherecaughtusingblackspinnersoratleastsimilar.Wednesday,sawPeteMandmyselffishthewesternshoreofAdaLagoon,seeingseveralfishbutunabletogetthemtoshowanyinterestinourimpeccablytieddry’s.TheremainderofthegrouprevisitedTerryTarnwithoutsuccessthenvisitedTheresaLagoonwhereBrucepickedupagood3lbfishthatwasreportedlyinexcellentcondition.Feedbacksuggests,tofishTheresawell,afloattubewouldbehandy.

    Thecamerabrokeaftertakingthisphotowhichsuggestedtometheclubwouldbenefitbyhavingamorerobustcamerathanminewhichcouldbesharedaroundtoencouragemorereportingback.Thelastdayproducedrainandawetpackup.

    Thesetrips,whicharesocapablyorganised,arechallengingbutrewardingwhenyougettomixwithgreatcompanyandgettoseetheTasmanianwildernessinallitsglory.

    Magoo#12andMagoowithorangebutt#14werethestandoutflies.Onninedays20ormoretroutwerecaught,thebestwas40inaday,whichwasapersonalbest!Thereweretwodayswithacatchof40.November3thrutillApril1.Thiswasthebestpartoftheseason,withMayflyhatchesandrisingfish.Ispentatotalof38daysonthewater.Caught181Troutondryflies/emergerpatternsCaught54trouton#14nymphsPenstock–166fish,(119Browns,47Rainbows)LittlePine-24BrownsLondonLakes50fish,(29Brownsand21Rainbows).Largestfishwasa7lbrainbowcaughtonanemergeratLakeSamuel.Ofthefishcaught24were5lbsorbetter,allondries/emergerpatterns,andallthesewerecaughtat

    LondonLakes,(Samuel).Mybestdaysresultsondryflywere19and18trout,bothonPenstock.Butsomedaysweretough.WehadafewdayswhereIhadasmanyas20to30takesonthedrybutonlymanagedtohookandland3or4.AnotherdayIwasfishingwithDougMosenthalandhissonRonan,thefishwereupfeedingalldaylong,andbothDougandmyselfonlymanagedtwoorthreetakes,andendedupwithablankeach,whilstRonan,whomwewereteaching,hookedandlostoneandcaughtanother.DougandIhadnotfelttheweightofafishthatday.AnothertripfishingwithLaurieMatchamwehadacoupleofdayswherewewerecatchingthelargerresidentsofPenstock,(fishbetweenthe4-5lbmark),onlymanaging2,3or4fishperday,andbreakingseveralothersoff,actually,Ithinkthefishbrokeusoff!Buteveryfishwesawthatcoupleofdayswerethewaterslargerspecimens.Severalothersweredroppedaswell.ThentotopthingsofftheJassidsappearedandwhataseasonsendwewerelookingforwardto!That’swhenthatCovid19showedup!Bugger!!!AndBuggeragain!!
