We would hope all parents will notify us when their child is not aending our College, and when we are not advised, sending a SMS is the appropriate level of follow up required, requesting families to make contact to provide an update on their child’s unexplained absence. To ensure you do not receive an sms, the correct procedure in the case of a child’s absence is to call the absentee line or a diary note prior to the day. In addition, where we have students arriving late unexplained, rather than mailing home a follow up leer which can take a number of days, the College will send an SMS to the parent/ caregiver, requesting for the College to be contacted to confirm the reason for the student’s unexplained arrival. This Sunday’s Gospel Readinga parish

When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees they got together and, to disconcert him, one of them put a question, ‘Master, which is the greatest commandment of the law?’ Jesus said, ‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second resembles it: you must love your neighbour as yourself. On these two commandments hang the whole Law, and the Prophets also.’ (Mt 22:34-40)

In this week’s Gospel reading we again have an example of the Pharisees seeking to ‘catch Jesus out’ in his interpretation of scripture. The Pharisees were regarded as the great interpreters of the Torah – the Law. To them, ALL the commandments were vitally important, not just the Ten Commandments given to Moses with which we are perhaps most familiar, but the 613 mitzvot (commandments) contained within the Torah – the first five books of the Bible. These 613 mitzvot governed all aspects of Jewish life. For the Pharisees to ask Jesus about the ‘greatest’ commandment was a blatant challenge to him. Perhaps they expected Jesus to

name one commandment and then they could challenge him with a whole series of ‘What about …?’ questions.

Jesus’ answer to the Pharisees highlights their preoccupation with the particulars of the Law contained within scripture. In their over-emphasis on the details of religious observance, they have forgotten about the most basic element of faith: to love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and mind. Jesus reminds them that being faithful to God isn’t about following precise rules but rather it is simply about loving God. With this one sentence, Jesus undermines the power position of the Pharisees. If the Law is as simple as ‘Love God’, what need is there of Pharisees to interpret the details of the Law? Having pulled the rug out from under them, Jesus follows up with his reminder that the second most important commandment is to love your neighbour as yourself. This is a call to compassion and justice that Jesus practised freely but was sadly lacking in the religious authorities of his time.

a school Handley Hickinbotham Unity CupNetballThe girls started the game full of energy and worked very hard for the entire four quarters. The defence was very

strong throughout the whole game with some fantastic turnovers by Brooke and Stella. The ball was worked very well through the midcourt by Juliet, Chelsea, Phoebe, Grace and Michaela directly into the goalies. Fantastic movement in the goal ring by Emily and Nikeisha with some brilliant shooting. Well done girls!

On 27th September the Xavier College Open Football team headed to St. Columba for the annual Hickinbotham Cup.

The sun was out and the boys spirits were high as this would be the last time that the Year 12s would represent the College for footy.

The boys came out firing kicking the first six goals of the game without St. Columba registering a score. The midfield looked dangerous with spearhead delivery into the foward line. St. Columba came out with a fighting spirit in the second quater kicking 4 goals to Xavier’s 3 goals.

Unfortuantley thats all they scored for the rest of the game. The full Xavier team played excellent team football with 13 seperate goal kickers, and came back with the cup with a 20 goal win.

Best Players: T. Mason, E. East, B. Cormack, R. Polito, L. Johnson

Goal Kickers: B. Cormack, E. East, B. Duregon 3 goals, B. Lane, R. Thorne, M. Schulze, L. Barnett, L. Johnson 2 goals, O. Davis, B. Murray, B. Pilkington, L. Corbin 1 goal

Mr Adrian Costa

The Xavier boys soccer team were involved in an exhilarating 9 goal thriller against St. Columba College in the Unity Cup.

The game started well for Xavier and after some neat build up play down the right-hand side involving a one-two and a pinpoint cross, Josh Taylor expertly put the ball in the back of the net to give us an early lead. St. Columba worked their way back into the match however, and found themselves 2-1 up at half time.

The game was in the balance at the start of the second half, with both teams creating chances, however the Xavier boys conceded another two goals mid-way through the half. We were able to get the quick reply with a fantastic free kick from long-range from Kieran Canning-Fischer to make it 4-2. With only 15 minutes left on the clock, St. Columba scored their fifth goal to seemingly put the result beyond doubt.

However, the Xavier boys dug deep and managed to put St. Columba well and truly on the back foot for the final 10 minutes, scoring two quick goals in the 83rd and 86th minutes to set up a grandstand finish. Deep into injury time, we pushed men forward for one last chance at finding an equaliser. After a scramble in the box, the referee blew his whistle and awarded us a penalty after a clumsy challenge.

The moment was tense and unfortunately the penalty flew over the bar.

The full time whistle blew soon after with St. Columba scraping home, winning 5-4. Although the result didn’t go our way, the Xavier boys should be commended for their efforts and sportsmanship throughout the match.

All Schools State Athletics GamesThe All Schools State Athletics Games were held over the weekend of the 21st and 22nd of October 2017 at SA Athletics Stadium. This event had student athletes from all over South Australia competing. Xavier College was proudly represented by Bradley and Jacqueline Thring who both competed in the Under 18 age bracket.

Bradley had a huge workload and competed in 7 events over the weekend. A bronze medal in the U18 2000m Steeplechase being the highlight for him. He also competed in the 200m, 400m, 800m, Discus, Shotput and Javelin ensuring that the Xavier colours were prominent across a range of events. Bradley achieved season best and all time personal best results in several of his events.

Jacqueline competed in 4 events with

the following results, U18 Long Jump (Gold), 100m (Silver) missed the win by 0.07sec, 200m (Gold), and she tired in the 400m final after a big Saturday to finish 8th. This resulted in her being the 2017 U18 All Schools Champion in the Long Jump and 200m events.

The State All Schools was the selection trials for the All Schools Nationals which are being held in Adelaide on 8th – 10th of December 2017. Jacqueline’s performances mean that she has won the right to represent South Australia at the Nationals in the 100m, 200m, Long Jump, 4x100m Relay and the Swedish Relay. Depending on the selection policy Bradley may also get a run in the steeplechase at the Nationals.

For the first time in the Handley Hickinbotham Unity Cup, Basketball was trialled as an exhibition game, proving very successful.

Led by a fantastic performance from Ari and Alex, Xavier College surprised St. Columba with their ferocious defence, hustle and ball movement. Tom, Jaylen, Sam and Tawhena pressured St Columba to turn over the ball and Trey, Billy and Dale were strong on both ends of the floor giving us the lead at three quarter time. Unfortunately St. Columba had a run early in the fourth quarter following a spectacular ‘put-back’ dunk by one of their elite players. We look forward to the re-match next year!

Xavier College V Port Adelaide Aboriginal AFL Academy SquadLast term on Tuesday September 12, Xavier College played an exhibition match against the Port Adelaide Aboriginal AFL Academy (AAA) Squad. The match arose from earlier in the year when the Port Power development staff accompanied Aunty Pam at the launch of the Sir Doug Nicholls Gymnasium. From the AAA squad’s perspective, it is great for them to have as much experience-playing matches against a wide range of opposition as possible. The AAA

are Stage 1 SACE students whom play Australian Rules football at respective SANFL clubs.

Going into the match, we knew that it was going to be very challenging. The skill, class and execution of the AAA playing group was exceptional. It is likely that some of the members of their team will end up playing in the AFL. That being said, our students fought gallantly and even showed some outstanding passages of play that impressed their opponents. After

the match, all players shared lunch and engaged in many conversations that the students enjoyed. The Xavier College students demonstrated great professionalism and sportsmanship.

Final Scores Xavier College 2 8 20 AAA 27 12 174

Best Players: Trey Mason, Blayke Lane, Bradley Pilkington, Luke Barnett, Dale Nixon, Jack Carpenter.
