Come Hear the Amazing Story of
“Joni and Friends” Wednesday, October 23, 2013
11:00 am Community Hall
Joni Eareckson Tada, the founder and Chief
Executive Officer of Joni and Friends International
Disability Center, is an international
advocate for people with disabilities.
A diving accident in 1967 left Joni
Eareckson, then 17, a quadriplegic in a
wheelchair, without the use of her hands.
After two years of rehabilitation, she emerged with new skills
and a fresh determination to help others in similar situations.
During her rehabilitation, Joni spent long months learning
how to paint with a brush between her teeth. Her high-detail
fine art paintings and prints are sought-after and collected.
Her best-selling autobiography “Joni“ and the feature film of
the same name have been translated into many languages,
introducing her to people around the world. Mrs. Tada has
also has visited more than 45 countries, several many times.
Cypress member Dr. Blair Bryan has served on the local
and national board for this organization, Joni and Friends.
Please join us on Wednesday, October 23rd in Community
Hall at 11:00 am to hear more about Joni and Friends. You
will be amazed and inspired by the story of this incredible
organization. *Sign up under #23 in the Activities Book.

Ragtime Pianist, Ethan Uslan Wednesday, October 9, 2013
7:30 pm Community Hall
Ethan Uslan (pronounced "Yoo-slin") is one of the hottest names on the ragtime/traditional jazz scene today. The first place winner of
the World Championship Old-Time Piano Playing Contest (Peoria,
IL), Uslan has performed on NPR's A Prairie Home Companion as well as
various concerts and festivals nationwide. Uslan studied
classical piano as a child in South Orange, N.J. and later
majored in classical piano performance at Indiana University.
All the while, Uslan secretly harbored a ragtime addiction, and
complimented his classical piano studies by learning to play
like Fats Waller, Jelly Roll Morton, and George Gershwin. He
also developed formidable improvising skills while
accompanying “Full Frontal Comedy” – an improv comedy
troupe that staged live improvised musicals based on audience
suggestions.
After college, Uslan found his way to Charlotte, North Carolina, where he
has enjoyed playing all over town, including with the Charlotte Symphony. In
addition to giving concerts and accompanying silent movie screenings, Ethan
has served as adjunct visiting lecturer of music at the University of North
Carolina-Charlotte. He has recorded three CDs as well several silent film scores
on DVD. He is also being featured in the ragtime documentary, The
Entertainers. When not playing piano, Ethan enjoys reading mystery novels and
spending time with his wife and 2 sons. Join for this wonderful evening.

New Friday Morning Video Lecture Series Fridays, beginning October 11, 2013
11:00 am Art Room
The last lecture of the current series, “Why Evil Exists” will be
shown on Friday morning, October 4th at 11:00 am. On October
11th the new series, “The World’s Greatest Geological Wonders: 36
Spectacular Sites” will begin in the Art Room.
This course takes you to the world’s most
spectacular geological wonders, explains the forces that
have formed them, and tell you the stories that have
grown up around them. Our planet remains unique in
the galaxy, even after space investigations have found
many hundreds of other planets around other stars. Earth is covered with a
vast diversity of geological environments that have, for millennia, inspired
people with their majesty, beauty, and sometimes their strangeness. Yet
certain places stand out above the others and epitomize the different types of
amazing geological phenomena that are found on Earth. These are the
geologic wonders of the world, and in 36 lectures, we will travel to and
investigate as many of them as we can. Each of the lectures focuses on one
particular geographical location but touches on other examples as well. Some
of these wonders are well known, and you may already have traveled to them.
Others you may never have heard of but will likely want to visit once you
have learned of them.

The Church at The Cypress Sunday, October 6, 2013
2:00 pm Community Hall
In October we will have a minister, not from a
traditional Charlotte church, but from a major
Charlotte charity. Our well recommended pastor
will be the Reverend Anthony (Tony) Marciano II,
pastor and director of Charlotte Rescue Mission. Friends
who have heard him are very enthusiastic about his message.
The goal of Charlotte Rescue Mission is to help those
who come to their doors for food and lodging build
independent lives. As they graduate from the program, they
ultimately have their own place to live, a livelihood, and
goals for the future. New lives are created. We know that
everyone will enjoy hearing this inspired minister on
October 6th. George Duensing will also add to our pleasure
with his fine voice.

“Fern: Flavors From the Garden” Wednesday, October 9, 2013
Depart at 11:15 am Bring money for lunch - Limited to 24 members
Fern: Flavors from the Garden is the new

has put together a menu that should thrill vegetarians
tired of tofu; she's pairing upscale ingredients and
multicultural influences and, in our visit, hitting some
long balls.
Montreal-born, Executive Chef Drew Trepanier
seeks to constantly evolve the vision of what is possible
in vegetarian cooking and has been a driving force for
why Fern, Flavors from the Garden is viewed both
locally and nationally as one of the top restaurants in
Charlotte. Fern’s all-vegetarian menu ranges from the
expected, such as a house-made veggie burger or a
quinoa salad, to the innovative, including vegan
doughnut holes made with ale and resting on a
chocolate stout glaze.
