From Fr. Davy’s Desk:

We welcomed joyfully the New Year 2020. One of the most popular New Year cus-toms is to make New Year Resolutions. Some fail to carry them forward beyond the first week of the New Year. Some of the resolutions include quit smoking, losing weight, waking up early, being punctual, etc. Resolutions help us to renew our life. They help us to build up our broken relationships. Let our resolutions this year turn towards others. For instance, if one decides to quit smoking let the money s/he saves be used to help someone to buy medicine. If one decides to lose weight by giving up some meals let that money be used to buy food for a poor family. Our resolutions also be: attend Mass during weekdays and every weekend, positive attitude to life, en-courage others, help others, spend 30 minutes daily reading Bible and prayer, etc. Today we celebrate the baptism of Jesus. It is the final celebration of the Christmas period and the beginning of Ordinary Time. There is an old Hindu parable about a ti-ger cub raised by goats. The cub learned to bleat and nibble grass and behave like a goat. One night a tiger attacked the goats, which scattered for safety. But the tiger cub kept grazing and crying like a goat without getting frightened. The old tiger roared, "What are you doing here, living with these cowardly goats?" He grabbed the cub by the scruff, dragged him to a pond and said: "Look how our faces reflected in water? Now you know who you are and whose you are." The tiger took the cub home, taught him how to catch animals, eat their meat, roar and act like a tiger. The tiger cub thus discovered his true self. Today’s gospel seems to suggest that Jesus received from heaven a fresh flash of realization of who, and whose, he really was (his identity) and what he was supposed to do (his mission), on the day of his baptism in the river Jordan. The baptism of Jesus reminds us of our identity and mission. It reminds us of who we are and whose we are. By baptism we become sons and daughters of God, brothers and sisters of Jesus, members of his Church, heirs of heaven and temples of the Holy Spirit. Let us keep our identity and do our mission faithfully. The Second Vatican Council emphasized three truths about baptism. 1) Baptism is an initiation into the people of God. 2) Baptism is a call to discipleship; to accept the Lord’s call to discipleship meant to live different from the rest of the world. It means a commitment to holiness. And 3) Baptism is a commissioning. The baptized are called to ministry, to do the work of God. All of us are commissioned through our baptism to be representatives of Jesus. Let the feast of the Baptism of our Lord help us to re-member our commitment. Fr. Kavungal Davy, CMI Pastor
