Unto the People of Three Rivers, from Josef and Slaine, Baron and Baroness,

Greetings!

With June comes the War of the Lilies, and one of the highlights for this event for Us every year is the party thrown by Our Barony on Friday evening coinciding with the fireworks This party is the result of many hands and many hours of work, and highlights the generosity of the members of this group From those who make and donate food and drinks, to those who cook/prepare and serve it, and those who provide the infrastructure so that it can be done so easily, we have consistently been in awe of the wonderful job you have done

This generosity was shown again recently, with those who came to the aid of Geoffrey and Maddie in their time of need It reminds Us that no matter how far away you go, members of the populace are still family

Also in the spirit of generosity, Lady Gwen is again organizing the construction of a boat for the Wings of Hope, “Hope Floats” regatta Last year, with the sweat and materials from many people, the Barony built a Viking longship which amazed all who saw it and raised over $4,000 for this charity (much of it from Baronial members) We look forward to seeing the Spanish Galleon now under construction, and know that it will be there by the generosity of this wonderful Barony

With the many examples of Our people’s generosity with their time, talent, and treasure, please help Us by letting Us know who has donated thusly to making Our Barony do so well

Josef and Slaine

Baron and Baroness Three Rivers

HerbalismLy. Aemiliana Villiani, OT, LM, AoA

Of course, the first garden was the Garden of Eden Gardening was the first and oldest profession People have been smitten ever since One of the seven wonders of the ancient world were the hanging gardens of Babylon My personal theory is that those hanging gardens were terraced and huge window boxes In the middle ages, gardens supported the castles and nobility, the cloistered religious and everyone in between They not only fed them, but provided aid for physical and mental health as well Beauty and utility had common purpose Urban centers always had people depend on potted plants and containers for the common herbs and fresh greens

Gardens were also mentioned by St Antony the Hermit in the 4th century and then again by St Benedict in the 6th when he made his monastic rule Knowledge of period gardening despite these two sources was scarce until the 9th century In the 9th century, Charlemagne issued a decree in 812 ce that includes a list of eighty nine plants that he wanted grown in his imperial gardens (Bayard, 7) Examples includes radishes, carrots, lettuce, and cucumbers as well as orach, madder, costmary and lovageThe second document (c 816-20) are surviving plans of the Benedictine monastary gardens at the Abbey of St Gall in Switzerland St Gall is still a living example of how a cloistered garden was arranged

Included in the plans were vegetable gardens, flower beds in the cloister garth, and the infirmary garden No space was wasted because the cemetary was used as a fruit and nut orchard Larger fields of cereals, root crops, vineyards and orchards were outside of the monastary walls and not included in the plan St Gall was representative of the gardens portrayed in art and literature throughout the middle ages The third source is from the journal of a 9th century monk called Walahfrid of Strabo, abbot of Reichenau It is from his poem, Hortuculus that he is best known today

Typical features of period gardens were raised rectangular beds, and included walls, fences, trellises, and hedge Plants such as boxwood and thyme made trimmed living benches to sit on and fragant places to drape laundry for drying Other embellishments included arbors, trained trees, fountains, and statuary, both classical and of saints Usual plans were geometric and rectangular to best utilize, (Baynard, 10) By the 13th century, ornamental gardening was well advanced and in 1260, Albertus Magnus

Herbalism(teacher of Thomas Aquinas), the Dominican scholar, wrote On Vegetables and Plants In this treatise, he writes on how to keep a good lawn “where grass will cover the surface like a green cloth” Around this lawn are to be planted rue, sage and basil as well as flowers such as violet, columbine, lily, iris, and roses Sweet trees and perfumed flowers were favored also like grapevine, apples, pears, pomengranites, sweet bay trees, and cypresses

Period growing techniques included growing young plants in nurseries, grafting, cultivating rare and unusual plants brought home by Cathay merchants and trips to crusades, and gardeners exchanged plants, seeds, and cuttings All of the garden tools remain the same as today with the obvious exception of power tools There are even pictures of lawn mowers that are much like to modern powerless push mowers As gardening was both popular and practica, there were instruction books as well One of the most popular was written in 1300 Bologna by a lawyer named Petrus de Crescentiss His treatise was Opus Ruralium Commodurum (The Advantages of Country Living) and was a working manual on botony, animal husbandry, beekeeping, and many other aspects of farming and gardening

Herbs and flowers were also important as they were used in dyes, medicines, cosmetics, perfumes and insecticides Famous treatises include works by Hildegard Von Bingen, Tacuinum Sanitatus, Walahfrid of Strabo, and Goodman of Paris Rennaissance resources included Culpeper, Da Vinci, and the physician, Nostradamous

In my next article, I will specifically discuss how to plant container gardens and medical and cosmetic use of herbs and flowers, as well as explain how the Greek philosophy of humors affected medicine, psychology and how plants were used to heal So what if I wish to start my gardens now Aemiliana? At the end of this article is an extensive annotated bibliography that will be useful in putting together your personal garden of eden Bon chance and happy digging and planting

HerbalismBibliography

• Baynard, Tania - Sweet Herbs and Sundry Flowers - New York, NY: Boston: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1985 Describes gardening practices of the middle ages with excellent documentation. Gives extensive lists of period herbs and flowers documented in period to use in a N. American garden and also discusses the philosophy of gardening through the ages.

• Lewis, Eleanor - Better Homes and Gardens, Container Gardens - Des Moines, IA: Meredith Corporation, 2001 Gives Practical advice and planting suggestions to get started. Lots of pictures so you can visualize end product.

• Frederick, Carter - Better Homes and Gardens Complete Guide to Container Gardening - Des Moines, IA: Meredith Corporation, 2010 More extensive that Lewis’ book and goes into more detail for shade, vegetables, and seasons.

• Clark, Graham - Success with Shade Loving Plants - Lewes, East Sussex: Guild of Master Craftsman, 2007 Excellent guide to shady plants and planting layouts as well as basic gardening techniques. Gives a glossary of plants and where they originate which is helpful to help figure out if it was a plant they may have had access to in period.

• Caplan, Adam and James - Urban Eden - Kyle Cathie, 2004 Describes how to use container gardening in really tight spaces such as window sills and balconies. A good resource for apartment dwellers and those who can’t or don’t want to dedicate to traditional gardening.

• Culpepper, Nicolaus - Culpepar’s Color Herbal - New York, NY: Sterling Publishing Co, Inc, 1983 A modern rendition of the classic. Lists of herbs and plants alphabetically, describes their humors, ruling plants (Old Farmers Almanac still does this too btw) traditional uses and modern uses. Also has color illustrations of the plant.

• Garzoni, Giovanna - Florentines: A Tuscan Feast 1600-1670 - Great Britain: Pavillion Books, Ltd, 1992 Mostly a cookbook of late period Italian food but has period still lifes and excerpts from contemporaries about festivals and food philosophy. Also has a period recipe for Leek and potato soup and a commentary how it was thought to be poison for almost 50 years. Also has my strawberry sauce receipt in it.

• Johnson, Dean & Cramer, James - Window Boxes Indoors and out 100 projects and planting ideas for all 4 seasons - Storey Publishing, 2004 Good suggestions for scented window boxes, vegetables, and herbs as well as all 4 seasons.

• Smith, Charles - The Beginner’s Guide to Edible Herbs: 26 Herbs Everyone should Grow and Enjoy - Storey Publishing, 2010 Good basic guide to herbalism and growing seasons and zones and also has a nice selection of receipts and ideas for the herbs as well.

• Zyvatakakas, Betty and Sonia - Eating Shakespeare: Recipes and More from the Bard’s Kitchen - Toronto, ON: Prentice Hall Canada, 2000 Although again a cookbook, and an Elizabethan one at that, it has a variety of vegetables that would have been period such as lima beans, pumpkins, sweet potatoes, and Jerusalem artichokes (Canadian pototoes) and Virginia pototoes(white) as well as a wide variety of herbs used too. I particularly enjoyed the excerpts from Shakespeare’s plays using food as insults and innuendo.
