Urgent queries can be directed to any Council member, emails will continue to be serviced as normal and Chris Ogilvie has kindly offered to help with the compilation of passports. Happy New Year to All The year ended on a sad note with our Administration Officer Sandra Bryson resigning due to family commitments. I am sure that we would all like to thank her for the way she has helped to manage the transition from York to Harrogate. She has been a friendly and welcoming voice at the end of the phone, always willing to help. She will be greatly missed. We are now looking for a replacement to start in the near future and the post has been advertised both on the CBHS website and at the local Job Centre. On a positive note for 2011 our accounts will be fully audited as requested at the AGM and they are currently approaching break even. However, adjustments still have to be made for both stock and Gift Aid contributions. Two further points that were raised at the AGM have been addressed. 1) The Complaints procedure that dealt with Breed matters only has been updated to include any type of complaint from members and non-members to reflect our PIO status. 2) Non-discrimination of EU citizens: - All breeders of CB's must be members of the CBHS and all members are governed by the Articles of Association. We therefore do not discriminate between members. However commission decision 92/353/EEC requires all associations that maintain stud - books to state they have a policy which provides for the non-discriminatory treatment of breeders/members. We have therefore used the Defra wording and added the following statement on the website under the section About in sub section Our Role.... "In order to comply with Commission Decision 92/353/EEC the Cleveland Bay Horse Society declares that there will be no discrimination between members of the Society". We have undergone a Breed Society/Passport Issuing Authority (PIO) Audit conducted by ADAS on behalf of Defra. Subject to 3 minor actions to be undertaken the report was very positive with our standard operating procedures for issuing passports and supplying information to NED (National Equine Database) being classed as ―best practice‖. However, we should not be too complacent, as Defra have declared an intention of removing many of the small breed societies of their status as PIOs. This positive audit can only help the Society in our bid to continue as a PIO. We will try throughout 2012 to keep you updated through the Bay Window as well as the website and wish you all the best of health in the coming year and look forward to seeing you at one of the Cleveland Bay events this year. Regards David Anderson (Chairman)

Council Business: The following is a summary of the Council Meeting held at Yorkshire Agricultural Centre on 29th October 2011. The subsequent meeting in December was cancelled due to bad weather, the next meeting is planned for Sunday 5th February 2012.

Summary of the CBHS Council Meeting held on Saturday 29 October 2011 This was the first meeting of Council held since the AGM. David Anderson opened the meeting and reminded those present that in previous years‘ the positions of Council had been decided immediately after the AGM. However, given that the AGM had overrun this year, this was the first opportunity for the new Council to meet and decide individuals‘ roles. A letter was read to Council from Colin Green who has decided to resign, therefore Henry Edmunds is co-opted for the duration of Colin‘s term. The following were elected: Chair Dave Anderson (also Company Secretary and Director) Deputy Chair Norma Wilson Treasurer Marjorie Heathcote Breed Chair Barbara Martindale Show Chair Steve Pullan (also a Director) Pubs/Prom Chair Norma Wilson Supporters Group Cecila Delville-Lindsay Corporate Fundraiser Charles Medforth Rules & Regs Dave Anderson During a discussion on the working of Council, it was agreed that the committees would meet between the Council meetings (using Skype) in order that full day Council meetings could continue to be held as had been the practice last year. It was also agreed that each committee could have a budget, if required, and that every committee would have a nominated web/forum contact. Council meeting dates were set for the year with the AGM scheduled for Saturday 13 October 2012. Dave Anderson updated Council on the latest position with regard to the Articles of Association. Following a lot of discussion with Companies House, it appeared that whilst the Society had a procedure for changing the Articles with members, including voting on them and approving them at AGMs, there had been no procedure for registering the changes with Companies House. All changes going back to 1984 had now been forwarded to, and accepted by, Companies House without penalty. The Charity Commission were happy that members had been properly consulted over the years and the corrected paperwork was also being finalised with them. It was noted that the Charity Commission still had to update their website with the correct details for the Society.

During this exercise, the position with regard to proxy voting (raised at the AGM) had also been clarified. There is no obligation to provide proxy voting for organisations that are charities only, but the Society is also a ‗Company Limited by Guarantee‘ and, therefore, should allow proxy voting. It was agreed that lessons needed to be learnt from this year‘s postal vote and a review, including proxy voting would take place in time for 2012. Council spent a lot of time discussing the questions submitted prior to the AGM and individuals would receive responses shortly. The answers would also be appended to the minutes of the meeting. One question raised at the AGM, and subsequently with Council, was the Society‘s position with regard to SPARKs. This programme is managed by Andy Dell who has kindly agreed that it can be made available on the office computer and the Society can in future become responsible for administering it after one or two persons have been trained in the procedure. The next meeting of Council will be 11 December 2011.

Thank You! The Council would like to offer their grateful thanks for the bequest from the late Miss Marygold Nixey in the sum of £5000.00. Marygold bred under the Harrington prefix and was a formidable horsewoman and lifelong supporter of the Cleveland Bay. A letter of thanks has been sent to the Executors on behalf of the Society. A full tribute will be in the next Stud Book.

Magazine: Please make an effort to support the CBHS Magazine and get your articles, stories, advertisements in NOW! We want to make this a ‘special’ edition as it is our Patron H M The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee year.

CBHS Performance Scheme Maggie Brown has agreed to manage the Performance Scheme and will be contacting everyone who entered last year—thank you for your support. If you have not entered the scheme before and would like to take part please email or telephone Maggie who will be more than happy to discuss the rules and categories with you. Please support the scheme, entry cards will be available from Maggie shortly. WAR HORSE - War Horse is set to be a box office hit and win many awards, it has been suggested that the CBHS could achieve some publicity from this. Does anyone have any factual evidence and/or pictures of CBs going to war and the impact this had on the breed? Please forward any information to Norma Wilson.

News from the Breed Committee:- The Imperial Stud of Japan is looking to purchase a CB stallion in 2013 following the death of Botton Grove Brigand. The owners of pure bred licenced stallions, with proven fertility, are asked to contact the Chair of Breed if they would like their horse considered. Suitable stallions in the USA are also being considered. A list of pure breeders is now being compiled by Jean Morgan, if you would like your name and contact details added please contact Jean. To qualify for inclusion in this list you must have bred a pure CB foal in 2009, 2010, 2011 or have one due in 2012. A list of pure and part bred licensed stallions is being compiled by Cecilia, if you would like your stallion‘s details included please contact Cecilia—stallion must be licenced by the CBHS.

The following stallions are currently offered on loan: Oaten Tops’l SB No. 2462 Born 1997 Life Premium Stallion is offered for loan, breeding purposes only. He has been tested and does not carry the chestnut genes. He stands at 17 hh, anyone interested in taking him would need to collect him in a lorry as he is too big for a trailer. The tour will take up to two hours and then the party will visit the Household Cavalry which will take approximately one and a half hours. Bring and Share: A bring and share has been organised at the office in Harrogate on Saturday 28th April commencing 11am. This will be an opportunity for breeders and Friends of the Cleveland Bay to meet and catch up on what is happening in the world of CBs. There will be a raffle/tombola, the magazine will be on sale (to non-members)and it will be an opportunity to join the Society. Please put this date in your diary, a ‗Friends‘ application form is attached to this newsletter, please pass to anyone who may wish to support our breed and bring them along to this event. Susan Cutts is looking at organising a similar event in the South, but this may involve camping/caravanning, a bbq and a guided tour of Cholderton Stud further details will be available shortly. CB Challenge A really wild idea to ride your pure or part bred CB in a relay to London as part of the Jubilee Celebrations. Due to the numbers likely to take part this may need to be amended to Ride your CB Day! The idea was to gain maximum publicity for the CB, to have ‗regional‘ rides on the same day with a well known celebrity taking part (not necessarily riding) at each stage. I am currently awaiting a response from NFU (the Society Insurers) to ascertain if our existing policy would cover such an event or if further cover will be needed. In the meantime we would like to hear from anyone who is willing to take part and/or willing to act as a regional organiser. If we are able to attract sponsorship this would be a huge bonus. Riders should have their own Public Liability insurance either through a personal policy or membership of BHS etc. Do you know a celebrity who would be willing to support us ie Sir Alex Ferguson, Niall Quinn, Martin Clunes—anyone who has an interest in horses. Lets aim high and think outside the box—any help or suggestions welcome!! Please contact Sue Cutts or Norma Wilson.

Discovering Cleveland Bays by June Timperley It was a bitterly cold November morning, I had just gone through the coldest, hardest, longest night of my life. The vet had just left and I was faced with the sudden loss of my dearest soul mate, my beloved heavyweight show cob Top Gun Treacle. I didn’t want to carry on, I too wanted to go, my life wasn’t worth living, what was I going to do? A couple of hours later I began to realise I also had another problem, Treacle’s friend and companion was also seriously feeling the loss. We decided she had to have a new companion and quickly - but what and where from? As we all know trying to find a new horse can take weeks, months and even years, which we didn’t have. They say you don’t find a new horse – The best ones find you. All that day I trawled the internet with red swollen eyes that were looking but not seeing. My despairing husband said ‘there must be something’ I replied there was only one, and that one for some strange reason really stood out, ‘it found me’. It was a 5month old tri-coloured part bred Cleveland bay filly. It was as if she was saying ‘I know I can’t replace Treacle but I too am loveable’. I spotted her in the first days of her advertisement and considering even after she was sold her advert continued to attract 87000 hits, that little filly’s photograph certainly had the wow factor. Four days later the little filly was safely settled in our stables thanks to Norma and Denis Wilson, who realising our predicament pulled out all the stops to get Holmside Lucky Rose to us so quickly. Two days later the snow came and it would have been impossible to deliver ‘Largo’ until well into the New Year, eight weeks later, when all the snow finally cleared. If I say my lifetime experiences with horses spans from in 2010; judging Side Saddle Classes at the Prague International Show plus being British Team Manager for the Ladies Tentpegging Team competing in South Africa and then going back to my early days working for a horse dealer who used to bring 10 horses a month over by train from Ireland in the days when there wasn’t even any horse boxes. It will be obvious to all concerned that I have had connections and dealings with almost every shape, size, breed and temperament of horse and yet never one with Cleveland Bay breeding. That is, not to my knowledge. But what had I done, yes I had solved the immediate problem, but what had I bought? I had no experience of Cleveland Bays. Over the next few weeks I realised my fears were unfounded. I discovered the most fantastic temperament, even on a windy, barn rattling day my new 6 month old filly was far less trouble than a 15 year old Anglo Arab mare. Over the Christmas period my emptiness and sadness over losing Treacle grew out of all proportion, I had to do something to shake it off. What about taking Largo to a show? Could it be done, after all she had run free with her mother for five months and had only just arrived at a strange new home. Also there was the added disadvantage that she had not been rugged up for the winter and all the other competitors would have been either rugged up or as we later found clipped out! We set about familiarising her with bridle, the horse-box, walk and trot in hand. On average all this crowded into such a short space of time could possibly have blown the mind of a young filly - not this CB filly. In early February the show day arrived, dark, wet and windy- just what we needed. Would she let me plait her up – incredibly she fell asleep whilst I plaited her up. Next would she go into the large horse box in the near dark – again no problem she walked up the ramp as if she had done it every day of her 7 month life.

Typical of me, the show I had chosen ‘The Best of British’ was large and extremely busy to say the least. It was indoors located on the Pennine Moors, it’s the only place I know that has horizontal rain and 50 mile an hour fog. We were slightly short of time due to taking the journey slowly, just in case. Hurriedly we had to get her ready and down to the collecting ring. As we had come to expect by now, Largo walked calmly down the ramp and into a hectic indoor collecting ring. Health and Safety would have had a field day in that collecting ring with horses and people stood haphazardly nose to tail on every spare inch of surface. Not ideal conditions for a filly’s first show. Again the fantastic Cleveland Bay temperament showed through, Largo calmly walked round the collecting ring, weaving our way round lunatic stallions/colts and restless mares/fillies. The only time Largo became unsettled was when carnage occurred, after a riding crop rattled the full length of the ridged outside wall of the indoor school, but not for long she very soon settled again. She patiently waited, as the classes were late starting, after waiting for what seemed hours in the freezing cold we were at last being called forward. The large indoor school was divided into two rings with jumping poles laid on the floor dividing the two rings. We had no problems walking and trotting round the ring with all the other competitors. Many of the other youngsters ended up flinging themselves and their handlers all over the ring, but not us. After a great deal of deliberation by the judge we were pulled in second, if we gave a good individual show was there a chance we could go up? Our turn came for the individual show, Largo seemed to know automatically how to stand for the judge, we walked away no problem and then disaster struck! After behaving impeccably throughout everything all morning our individual trot was a catastrophe. We set off well, nice even, long strides and then suddenly a great big, lumbering, ground shaking Welsh stallion came hurtling towards us with nothing between him and us apart from a pole on the ground. Too much even for a CB filly, that was it Largo was off! She might be calm and have an excellent temperament but she is definitely not a dobbin. The judge saw absolutely no individual trot and was very nearly flattened in the process. All the other entrants after messing around all morning and with no interference from the adjoining ring trotted round like angels. Naturally and not surprisingly we were dropped to third, it’s a wonder it wasn’t lower. But hey ho that’s showing for you. Although we didn’t collect a first rosette I cannot stress how impressed I am with the CB temperament. Not only does my little CB filly have a fantastic temperament, and the most wonderful loving nature and even though she is only small yet, she has the most amazing fluffy white shoulder that is incredible for burrowing your face into when life gets too much. All you like minded CB lovers have had this fantastic temperament for yourselves for far too long. You have got to get out there and let the rest of the equestrian fraternity know what they are missing. My only regret is that I didn’t discover Cleveland Bays earlier in my life.

(Thank you June, sorry it took so long to get to print!)

Farewell: Fred Joiner of Willow Stud passed away on 1st October 2011 after a short illness. Fred, with his wife Pat were supporters of the CB over many years and probably best known for their stallion Bantry Bere. James Joiner (aged 7) wrote the following poem in memory of Grandad Fred. (Caddy is Pat and Fred’s JRT)

Grandad Fred

Grandad Fred

Sitting in his chair Telling stories of the War

When he was there

Grandad Fred Would wear his flat cap

But would take it off When he had a nap

Susan Bulmer passed away in 2011 after a long battle with ill health. Susan will be known and remembered by the majority of members as the person behind the CBHS Performance Scheme which she managed for many years. Her last wish was that donations in lieu of flowers at her funeral be made to the scheme, we thank her sincerely for this gesture.

Full tributes will appear in the 2012 Magazine.

Yorkshire Sport Horse Awards Cleveland Bay breeders had a successful evening at the recent Yorkshire Sport Horse Awards Dinner held at The Bridge, Walshford, in North Yorkshire. Ripon-based breeders, Sue and Nigel Cowgill received The Yorkshire Sport Horse Trophy for the Best In-Hand horse at the Yorkshire Sport Horse Summer Show with Hawlmark Classic Twilight. The three-year-old filly was also runner-up to Eastern Index for The Baydale Trophy, which is awarded in memory of the late Sheila Fenwick for the Best Yorkshire- Bred In-Hand Show Horse. Twilight is by the thoroughbred stallion, Classic, out of Highpasture Hawlmark, a Premium Cleveland Bay mare. The East Yorkshire Breeders Trophy for the Best Youngster up to three-years-old gaining the most points in qualifying competitions was won by Steve Pullan's successful two-year- old filly, Jaguar Moon. Steve is particularly proud of this result as Jaguar Moon was his first home-bred foal. The filly is by the Olympic stallion, Jaguar Mail, out of Knaresborough Moonbeam, another Premium Cleveland Bay mare. Both horses were produced and shown during 2011 by Peter Richmond and family.

Southern Cleveland Bay Club – Report, December 2011 The Club has continued to focus on the promotion of the Breed at as many shows and events as possible, liaising with show organisers to incorporate Cleveland classes in their schedules. Thanks to member, Hilli Britton, Clevelands were introduced into the Heathfield show in Sussex earlier this year, with a strongly supported in-hand class. Clevelands were also invited to join in a multi-breed ridden class, but as this was at the other end of the day, there were few Clevelands presented. The Club‘s own show at Folds Farm was a great success this year, partly due to the fact it was moved to a Sunday, and there were a good number of entries, with strong in hand and ridden classes in both the Cleveland ring as well as the general show ring. An extremely friendly show, it is an ideal venue for young horses or inexperienced competitors. Maggie Brown negotiated a second year for the Breed at the Oxfordshire and Thame show and again, there was strong support for the classes (ridden and in-hand). Unfortunately, due to a clash with the Olympics next year, there will be no Thame show, but we will keep in touch to ensure a presence in 2013. There were good size classes with many members supporting the various shows up and down the country, including the Bewdley Showing show (thanks to member Anabel Bray), the Flintham Show (thanks to Chris Graham) and the other Club classes held for many years at the Chertsey Agricultural Show in August, organised by Jo Strange. We also attended Your Horse Live in November, at the request of the Cleveland Bay Horse Society, with Jean and Pippa Morgan manning the display stand with their mare, Thomsonbrook First Lady. In December, Sue Cutts and Cecilia Delville-Lindsay attended the South West Equine Fair in Exeter, with Sarah Pomfret‘s yearling, Bahian Maggie. The Club is currently in discussion with Bucks County Show and the Grafton Show for Cleveland classes next year and these will be in addition to the regular Folds Farm and Chertsey venues. Heathfield, Bewdley and Flintham Shows will also be running CB classes next year. All of these shows and events are detailed on the Club‘s website, with regular updates of results and stories of interest. The website continues to be of paramount importance to the Club as its major communication route – in fact it has had over 105,000 visitors since its creation in 2009. In addition to the website, the annual handbook was sent out in May and a newsletter is planned to back up both of these routes, which will be sent in both hard copy and email formats. For the third year running, we produced a calendar, this time in conjunction with the Cleveland Bay Horse Society. The Club is continually seeking new shows, displays and events at which to promote the Breed and to show its versatility and are sourcing new social events, trips and clinics for the members in 2012 and beyond.

Junior Member Story

Once there was 2 horses called thunder and lightening they had 2 best friends called Norman and Sky,

they had been invited to a horse show which had show

jumping, dressage and showing classes, light mountain and moorland classes and Cleveland Bay classes and

there were lots off different horses especially welsh ponies .They were allsorts of shades of black, brown

and some of them had white blazes on their faces and

white socks . Suddenly the horses pulled their ropes from the lorries

and trailers they were tied to and they started to gallop up the hill and tried to escape through the gate, but

they were stopped by a big truck and the man in the big truck was called Ben King .

Ben King could see all the way to the bottom of the hill

because of how big and tall he was . He grabbed his rope from the back off his Truck and flung the rope on

to thunder and then he threw another rope on to lightening and they tried to pull him over but he just

slipped forward a bit and then he tied the horses up

and grabbed another load of ropes and started to throw them on the other horses and then he gave everyone

their horses back. But then the man (Ben King) realised that thunder and

lightening were his so he had to collect his horse box and take them home, he then parked the lorry and put

them in the stable and went in his house and made a

cup of tea and the next day he put the horses in the field. The man also had another horse called monarch

who thunder and lightening shared a field with. But his best horses were Smokey and Veronica they

were CLEVELAND BAYS. HE HAD 2 DOGS CALLED Brina

and Maud and he had a huge black stallion called maggoty and another called hugomoogofloogo and one

day the man was riding smokey out and he saw a horse and rider stuck in the mud so they had to jump hedges

and ditches whatever was in the way of them as soon

as they got home they got the 2 black stallions and monarch and together with smokey they pulled the

horse out of the bog. They realised that it was sky and Edward that were stuck in the bog so they went home

for some tea and cake and Ben took Edward home and when they got home Edward got bathed and changed

and brushed sky his pony and then he cleaned his tack

which had smelly mud stuck too i t . the next night Edward was invited to a sleep over with

Bens son Freddie because the man was Edwards Uncle (god father) .The next day Edward went for a horse ride

with Freddie and his mummy (Edwards Auntie Fiona )

and Freddie's 2 sisters Millie and Issy.
