FROM THE PRESIDENTCarla Hannay

The Board and I would like to wish all the residents of Bay Lake Estates a Happy, Healthy New Year.

THANKSGIVINGJane Ann Miller

85 people gathered in the clubhouse Thanksgiving Day. A nice invocation was given by Ron Turk. A feast was had by all. The committee would like to give big thanks for all who donated their time and food. Everything came together wonderfully and it was nice to be with family and friend to give thanks for all that we are blessed.

CARTS, CAROLS, AND CHORUS

Seasonal festivities were in high gear on Tuesday December 16th. Bay Lake Estates residents enjoyed a parade of decorated golf carts, followed by prizes in

a couple of categories. Immediately afterward, all were invited to participate in the annual carol sing and chorus concert at the clubhouse. The musical fun ranged from traditional carols to audience participation in “The Twelve Days of Christmas” to more contemplative numbers such as “I Wonder as I Wander.” Santa and Mrs. Claus dropped in to delight the audience with a few sweet treats in the midst of the proceedings. The evening drew to a pleasant close with coffee, tea, cider, and homemade cookies.

FMO FIGHTS FOR YOU FMO stands for Federation of

Manufactured Home Owners of Florida, Inc. For more than 50 years the FMO has worked in Tallahassee and with park Home Owners’ Associations to give us all a voice. Are you facing a legal battle with your corporate owner? Is there an internal dispute about what the HOA legally can and cannot do? The FMO can recommend a lawyer well versed in these matters. Is the legislature threatening to pass another tax on us and our neighbors? FMO will be our voice in the legislative meeting rooms.

There are about 320,000 lots in manufactured-home communities throughout Florida. Several years ago, FMO membership stood at 250,000, representing a substantial portion of these residents. Now – perhaps because there hasn’t been a really big issue lately – membership stands at only 20,000. This number may be too small for FMO to have much clout with the legislators, although their knowledge base is as strong as ever. We can’t assume that “someone else will do it”; everyone needs to consider joining. Please pick up a form in the clubhouse, fill out the form and send to FMO, PO Box 5300, Largo, FL 33779-5300. For more information, contact Jerry Farmiloe or Tony Best.

ALLERGIESJanice Van Dyke

I know there are others like I that have allergies to food and other things. I would like to you to either email or sign a sheet at clubhouse if you have an allergy that everyone should be aware of. Some people in the park can not be in the clubhouse if certain foods are present, so it is important for all of us to know.

I am thinking of posting a list at the clubhouse of allergies that people have so when we arepreparing items we can avoid them. I don’twant people not to be able to attend functionsbecause of their allergies. I thank Randy & Lisa Godsoe for giving me this idea.

A NOTE FROM ZOS’Zos’ Wopinsky

I would like to thank everyone that attended Phyllis Tippner’s memorial on December 7, 2014.

Also thank you to everyone that sent Facebook messages and sympathy cards.

COMPUTER CLINICSteve Rollison

New Computer from Santa? Beware!

Computers are great, aren’t they? Unfortunately, bad things sometimes happen to them.

They get infested with malware. They get hacked into. Their files become corrupted. Components like hard drives fail prematurely.

To protect yourself against such

catastrophes, there are three steps you must take immediately when you first turn on your new computer. These are critical. Without going into the technical details, here are the three steps.1. Install capable anti-virus and anti-malware

programs. 2. Install all available updates for Windows.3. Use CD or DVD media to create recovery

discs.Failure to take these precautions can make

it extremely difficult—if not impossible—to recover from a serious breakdown. If you have questions or need help, please come see us at one of our Wednesday clinics between 1:00 and 3:00 o’clock.

INCOME TAX TIPSteve Rollison

This year the federal income tax code has incurred the most extensive changes in more than two decades. That, of course, is one of the consequences of the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare.

There are several requirements you should be aware of.

1. Everyone is required to have health care insurance that meets certain minimum standards. If you do not have insurance you may be subject to a tax penalty that you must calculate and include on your tax return.

2. For tax year 2014 most individuals must effectively just tick a check-box that says, “Yes, I had insurance every month throughout 2014.” Starting in 2015 they must prove they had insurance by including on their tax returns a code provided to them by their insurance company.

3. Individuals who purchased their insurance in 2014 from state or federal HealthCare Exchanges will be provided such a code that must be included on their 2014 tax returns.

Page 7: The Bay Laker · 2015. 1. 20. · hacked into. Their files become corrupted. Components like hard drives fail prematurely. To protect yourself against such catastrophes, there are

PAGE 7

4. Many people who buy insurance from the Exchanges qualify for tax credits to help pay their insurance premiums. They may take these credits in advance of filing their tax returns, having the credits applied against their monthly premiums. Anyone who received advanced credits must file a tax return even if, for example, their only income was Social Security. Anyone who qualifies for a credit but did not take it in advance must file a tax return to claim the credit.

If you have any questions about how Obamacare could impact your taxes, please feel free to phone or send me an e-mail.

The better headline would be, Being Sexy and Attractive in Social Situations.

We all know that the most appealing aspect is conidence. We all have been in a situation when we felt uncomfortable and it resulted in feeling unattractive. We all have that one moment we looked great and knew it. That conidence. That indeinable "I feel great about me."

That is the feeling I want you to have when you are out socializing.

Take a moment; think about the last four weeks and what activities you conidently participated in. Now, think about any activities you may have avoided since you knew it would not go well for you.

Are you limiting your lifestyle due to hearing challenges? If you answered yes, call me.

Many times I have been asked, "What is the best hearing device available?"

My response is always the same, "It all depends on your needs and lifestyle."

Now that probably sounds like a non-answer. So, let me explain. For anyone who is really active; social in groups, attends meetings or community functions, dinning out, you want the best circuit that would handle such a demanding lifestyle. You want a circuit able to understand conversations in crowded environments. These social activities will be part of the recipe for a successful match to your hearing loss.

CALL ME to have an evaluation and try the device best matched to you so you can have Conidence in Social Situations.

Top 40 Professionals 2014 welcome. No dog is too old or young to get socialized. Please wear proper shoes. If you have any questions call Barb Hickey 941-445-4287

RUMMAGE SALE SHEDBay Lake Estates has a rummage sale each

We are greatly in need of items for the Rummage Sale Shed so please start looking for items you can donate.

EAT RIGHT TO AVOID THE FLUIt’s never too late to protect yourself (and

your friends and family) from the flu. A flu shot may be your best line of defense, but you can also keep the flu virus at bay with help from these foods:

• Chicken soup. Once again, your mother was right. Chicken soup provides fluids that help fight off viruses, and it can reduce inflammation and other symptoms of the flu.

• Garlic. Compounds in garlic (also onions) known as allion and allicin have an antiviral impact. For maximum effect, chew a raw clove every three to four hours. If necessary, try chopping the clove into smaller pieces to swallow like pills.

• Pumpkin seeds. The zinc in pumpkin seeds is said to help white blood cells fight off disease.

• Citrus fruits. The vitamin C found in most citrus fruits (as well as red bell peppers, broccoli, sweet potatoes, and otherfoods) can reduce cold and flu symptoms by up to 25 percent.

• Blueberries. Antioxidants are more plentiful in blueberries than in lots of other fruits and vegetables. Eat half a cup a day during flu season. Fresh blueberries are best, but even frozen ones offer strong benefits.
