I., August 19—A ninatvay rapid transit locomotive on the Atlantic ave nue division of the Long Island railroad ran from Morris Park to Jamaica shortly after 12 o’clock Saturday night and dashed Into a stone wall near that station. As one of the Manhattan beach engines was coming up the road, about 12:15^ as It was passing the Mor ris Park yards, It struck a portion of the rapid transit locomotive, which was too near the switch, and this shook off the hostler in charge of St and opened the throttle at the same time. The riderless locomotive started eastward and before it reached Jamaica was going at the rate of forty-five miles an hour. The sparks flew out of the smokestack in a fiery stream. The switchman at tho Wood- haven junction, John Wapster, signaled back that there was a train ahead and, receiving no reply, thought something was wrong and switched the runaway off upon the track lead ing to the turntable. It jumped over the turntable and ran over the lies, finally bringing up against the stone wall southeast of the station- Its speed was so slackened b)* the ohstacle.s It had overcome that it was not much Injured- by its collision with the wall. The rapid transit train, which had arrived at Jamaica station at 12:20 o’clock, was just unloading its passengers at the time, and had It not been for the pres ence of mind of Wagsier at the Junc tion, there might have been a serious collis ion. DESTRUCTION OF OCEAN VIEW HOTEL. Rockaway Beach, L. I.. August IP—At S o’clock on Saturday the guests of the Ocean View’ hotel were startled by a cry ol fire, which, when discovered, was bursting through the roof of the building, a large three story frame building, situated at tho corner of Dodge avenue and the beach. The firemen were quickly on the scene and found the whole building a mass of flames. Several of the guests, who retired early, were aroused and escaped in their night clothes. All were thought to have escaped, but one child, Nellis Bergman, aged 11 years, is missing. By the most strenuous effort.s of the firemen the sur rounding buildings were saved. The Flor ence house caught fire several times. The Ocean View was a three story frame struct ure and burned like tinder. The exact origin of the fire is unknown, but Is said to have been caused by the explosion of a lamp in one of the guests’ rooms. The building was a total loss. When the fire was discovered the guests who were In their rooms and on the piazza fled pell raell, too panic stricken to think of saving any of their effects. The beach \vtis lined with sightseers for blocks, fully ten thousand people being upon the scene. The hotel property Is a part of the Downing estate, and was In charge of Mrs. Schultz. The loss was total and will prob ably reach $3 0,000, partially covered by Insur ance. The losses sustained by the guc.sts In jewelry and wearing apparel can‘scarcely be estimaied. but will probably be beavy. For tunately there was very little wdnd, and that, carried the flames toward the ocean, thus en abling the firemen by hard work to save the adjoining buildings. A MUCH LITIGATED CASE. Rlverhead, L. I.. August 19—The Mary Snelllng will case, which has been In litiga tion for the past few years. Is on the calen dar of the Suffolk county court for the Seu- tember term. Mary Snelling died at Hunt ington leaving an estate valued at $12,000, to a woman friend of hers named Cook, to the complete exclusion of all her relatives, and she further set aside a portion of her es tate for carrying on any legal battles which might be necessary to sustain the will, which was offered for probate when the late James H. Tuthill was surrogate, and was admitted by him. An appeal was then taken by the contestants and eventually the court of ap peals reversed the surrogate’s decision and the case was sent back to the Suffolk county surrogate’s court for a new trial and came before Judge N. D. Petty. At this hearing a peculiar feature was that Judge Tuthill, who while surrogate had admitted the will, now appeared as counsel for the contestants. The result of the hearing was that Surrogate Pet ty sustained the will and again thtf contest ants appealed. The court of appeals affirmed the surrogate’s decision, but by a provision of the code, which took effect in May. 1892, the case Is to brought up for a new trial be fore a jury In the supreme court of Suffolk. It is the first time that litigants in Suffolk county have taken advantage of this provis ion of the code and the case naturally excites mush Interest. YACHTSMEN ENTERTAIN FRIENDS. Sea Cliff. L. The only Republican supervisor elected In the town of Flushing during the past fifteen years is George Pople. the present Incumbent, and added to that dl.stinction is another of which he is greatly proud, for he is the flr.st odd fellow in the state to wear the fifty year membership medal, as a reward for his half century’s connection with that order. He is 73 years old, for he was born In 1822, in Tlm- perne, a little village near Rlandford, Dorset shire. England. He emigrated to this country at an early age and took up his residence in Flushing fifty-four years ago. He has always been known as one of its most progressive cit- V i GEORGE rOPLE. Izens. Though be is in no sense a politician, he is thoroughly acquainted with public af fairs, having always maintained a lively inter est In them. His succesful conduct of a large business for many years, and his leading posi tion in several social organizations, such as the free masons and odd fellows, ami his prominence as a warden of St. G e o r g e ’s church, all testify to hi.s eminent i>ractlcal worth as a citizen whom the people delight to honor.
