THE LEGACY MOTOWN

2021: A Milestone Year for Live Entertainment

I went looking for itineraries. Every time I think I’ve got

them all, I stumble over two more. I have a suspicion this has

something to do with a year and a half pandemic.

It would be wonderful to be able to promise to have all the

itineraries here in one place that you could print out or carry

in your phone.....but I’m just not sure how many I’ve missed!

But I will attempt to include what I do have (excluding the

S.O.S. itineraries--which is going on right now).

BONUS: There are several bands appearing on sched-

ules that we haven’t seen before. Another boon in a

post-pandemic world.

There’s no possibility of confusing this summer with last summer -- we have an abundance of venues presenting Beach

12 Beach Music Top 40 News

As we’re about to enter our 30th year counting down the

40 biggest dune tunes of the week, there’ve been several

inquiries as to how the Beach Music Top 40 impacts the

Beach and Shag culture.

Good question, because we don’t trumpet what goes

on in the ‘kitchen,’ we just serve the ‘buff et’ and move on

to next week.

Let’s drill down a little to show another side of the Beach

Music Top 40.

Although I had the good fortune to work with Dr. Beach-

ley of Charlotte, NC’s Wax Museum when he and another

fellow produced the All Time Beach Music Top 40 in 1980

(and updates ever since), I also was lucky to learn that an-

other good friend, (another Dr.) Dr. Feelgood, had produced

an All Time Top 40 in Wilmington in 1977. Apparently only a

few listeners of that station (WGNI) heard the show. Still,

that makes Dr. Feelgood a pioneer in charting Beach Music.

Important sidenote: 83% of that chart was national art-

ists. Six of the songs were local.

This week’s Beach Music Top 40 (page 2) begins with a

fun collaboration at # 1 by three musicians who’ve known

one another through a variety of band-incarnations. The

Martin-Davis Band is Durwood Martin (the Embers, early

to late 1960s) and Tony Davis, member of several bands

(including one of my favorites, the Kruze Band).

Bill Lyerly has a looooong resume which includes Super

Grit Cowboy (I’m pretty sure I have three albums by them

and a ton of entertainment pictures over the years).

At # 11, Terry VunCannon and Kristy Jackson share the slot

with a song bound to make a LOT of noise. Terry’s last two

or three songs have been featured to a world wide radio

and streaming audience of more than 4,000,000 listeners.

“Carolina Blue” is an original by Terry and an original ‘inter-

pretation’ by Kristy. (Remember Kristy back in the summer

of 1990? She fronted the Timepiece band on Pyramid records

out of Charlotte with “Take It Back.” Eventually Reba McEn-

tire heard it and turned it into a national country hit at # 5

in November 1992).

Other notables on this week’s Beach Music Top 40 include

Little John Thompson on a solo eff ort without Hip Pocket,

entitled “No Matter” at # 7.

Beach Music Top 40 News-- Fessa’ John Hook

Billy Vera and the Beaters are back on the chart after a

long hiatus with “Cool Out Baby.”

Sylvia Johns Ritchie is doing exceptionally well at # 2 with

“Gonna Stop My Lookin.”

Dr. Wu and Friends have been long-time contributors to

both the Beach Music Top 40 and the Roadhouse Blues and

Boogie Top 40. They’re out of Texas and never disappoint

when it comes to good Jump and Shag Blues. “Coming In

Hot” is the lead release from their new CD at # 12.

Patman and Robin are back with a new CD entitled A Little

More Love, (page 13), packed with 17 tunes, some already

claiming positions at the top of the charts. From their new

collection, the Carolina Coast Band featuring Rhonda Mc-

Daniel are trumpeting “Bluemonia” while the Magic Band

has staked out some real estate on the chart with “Where

Are You Tonight.”

Early indications are that this may be the biggest Patman

and Robin CD yet. For one thing, I’m interested in the Don

Dixon song. Dixon has been around Carolina entertainment

forever, but never had a Beach hit. This could be very inter-

esting.

Sylvia Johns Ritchie’s tune on A Little More Love is just

a step away from # 1 and there are several more tunes of

interest.

Gonna be a Great Summer 2021.

Leona Lewis, # 4 this week with “One More Sleep.”
