"For in this modern world, the instruments of warfare are not solely for waging war. Far more importantly, they are the means for controlling peace. Naval offi-cers must therefore understand not only how to fight a war, but how to use the tremendous power which they operate to sustain a world of liberty and justice, without unleashing the powerful instruments of destruc-tion and chaos that they have at their command."
Admiral Arleigh Burke, CNO, 1 August 1961, Change of com-mand address at Annapolis, MD
Souda Bay kicked off the holiday season on 30 November with a Lighting Up the Season Cere-mony in front of Building #1 that was organized and orchestrated by our Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) personnel. ATHENS MARATHON PARTICIPANTS
MWR NSA Souda Bay hosted the Athens's Marathon Trip from 9 to 11 November 2012. The trip gave sailors the oppor-tunity to participate and compete in the event which recreates the route used in the Battle of Marathon in the fifth century BC ...and also in the first modern Olympic games of 1896.
Four NSA Souda Bay sailors competed in the full marathon (one sailor and one airman finished in the top 5% of the full marathon, out of 10,000 runners), two competed in the 10K and two more in the 5K race. All of them got the chance to cross the finish line in the original Olympic Stadium, just like the water-carrier Spyridon Louis did when he won the gold medal for Greece in the 1896 Olympics.
All sailors that competed in the event got the opportunity to strike a pose in front of Building 1 with their Athens Mara-thon/10K/5K medals to show off their awesome achievement. Congratulations to all of our participants! Now an MWR 5K should seem like a walk in the park.
Here's a group photo of our Team Souda members who were in Athens for the Marathon events. Congratulations to all of our participants!

SAFETY STAND-DOWN NOV 2012
In preparation for the holiday season, NSA's Safety Department recently organized its annual Holiday Safety stand-
down for all base personnel. Various speakers from different NSA departments presented topics related to the staying
safe during the holiday season. Chania's Chief of the Greek traffic police contributed to the success of the stand-down
with her presentation that emphasized the continuous efforts in minimizing traffic accidents within the community.
Chiefs and Officers serving Sailors and Marines at Thanksgiving dinner was a highlight of the great
holiday meal served up by NSA's Galley!

This was a great show for our NSA Souda Bay community. The hour-long dance concert performed during the Capitol Move-ment tour with Armed Forces Entertainment was a tribute to men and women serving in the armed forces in honor of Veteran's Day. The performance featured dance styles such as hip hop, jazz, modern, tap, and contemporary. The show was enjoyed by everyone who had the opportunity to attend. The adult company has been praised for having "captivating energy.
The MWR European Region held a raffle for
sailors to have a chance to win 2 NFL tickets to
watch the New England Patriots vs St. Louis
Rams on 28 October at the new Wembley Sta-
dium in London, England. In order to have a
shot at winning the tickets, each participant
had to take part in the MWR NSA Punt Pass
and Kick Competition held at each of the major
European bases. Souda Bay's competition was
held on 17-18 September.
Eleven participants took place in the MWR
NSA Souda Bay competition, and PO3 Cabigon
from the NSA Souda Bay Security Department
was one of the lucky winners - from the entire
region.
PO3 Richard Cabigon won an all-paid-for
travel package that consisted of 2 NFL tickets,
round-trip airfare and 4 nights of hotel accomodations. PO3 Cabigon also invited PO3 Thomas Green from the NSA
Security Department to tag along and go on the trip to London, England.
MWR would like to congratulate the winner, and thank all of our participants for taking place in the competition and
claiming their chance to win - it is always rewarding to take care of our sailors!
