The Beacon
November 30, 2010 marked a significant day that will forever be etched in the minds of the staff and students of the Point Hill and surrounding environment. This was the dedication and opening ceremony for the Irene Goit Multi-purpose room.
Mrs. Goit visited the school and saw the need for a lunch room. She along with her friends in the United States of America made a major contribution to the school. Mrs. Jane Taylor (former chair of PHDRC) was given the onerous task of managing this project. She did a superb job along with Mr. Wynter, the site manager.
The multi-purpose room was constructed and furnished at a cost of over $2million and was donated by Mrs. Goit and friends and support also came from The National Commercial Bank’s Foundation and The Taylor-Mӧllers Fund who provided significant contributions for some of the seating for the room. Construction of this room was completed in October 2009 and furnishings were installed in May 2010.
For the Opening Ceremony the NCB Foundation was not in attendance, however, we thank them for their commitment to nation building. Mrs. Goit was over-whelmed at the reception she got. All items on the program were designed to say ‘thanks’. The students said thank you in six different languages, role played the story of the “Two Magic Words” and topped off their performance by singing thanks to Mrs. Goit.
Dr. Adolf Cameron (Board Member) had the audience in stitches as he performed his role of master of ceremony. Mrs. Taylor gave a brief background to the conception and actualization of the project and Dr. Allen (Principal) conveyed her appreciation on behalf of all beneficiaries. A plaque was presented to Mrs. Goit and Friends for their outstanding contribution and another was unveiled in the the Irene Goit Multi-Purpose Room. Mrs. Goit assured everyone that seeing the room constructed and providing a service to the children, was “all the thanks she
needed”.
In attendance were Board members, Mr. & Mrs. Taylor, Mr. Duncan - PTA President, parents, Point Hill community, teachers, staff and students. The Point Hill Diagnostic Reading Centre and the Point Hill Leased Primary and Junior
High School salute Mrs. Goit. We will forever remember your generous gift to us, as this building will continue to touch the lives of so many of our students.

Reading at a Pre-primer level, Zawadi started the program in grade 2. She knew all the letters of the alphabet but not the letter sounds.
After two years, she knows twenty three letter sounds and is able to blend them to decode words within her grade level. She now can read on her own and bold enough to dramatize in front of an audience.
Zawadi is indeed making magnificent progress.

Xavian Harrison
Xavian entered the program (6 years old), still bearing the lost of his mother who died tragically in a car accident. He was very withdrawn and quiet. With the day to day interactions with the classroom teacher and his peers, he is now more sociable. Though still a little shy, he talks more freely.
Academically, he identifies few, simple words within his grade level, through the use of blend and sight words. This augurs well for Xavian progress for this year. We wish him all the best for 2011!
Kemisha came with a very creative story telling skill. Her imagination is awesome. However, she put could not her thoughts on paper. Now, she knows most of the letters and their sounds. She
can blend some unfamiliar words. She is learning to make the connection between written and spoken language. Presently, she is reading at an early grade one level. Kemisha often uses invented spelling to create stories but is acquiring new, phonic skills each day.
Kemisha is truly made significant progress. We hope, by the end of school, she will develop her writing and vocabulary in her every day interactions.

This is one of our fundraising effort at the Centre. Tel-a-thon 2010 took place in November 2010 and was done over a two day period. Volunteers from the community participated and 500 calls were made. Many pledges were recorded.
We thank all those who responded kindly and made a cash donation. May you continue to assist us to change lives and em-power people. To all those who have not yet made good on their promise, we pray that you will make that commitment soon.

"It is one of the most beautiful
compensations of this life that no man can
sincerely try to help another without
helping himself."
~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
The hallmark of non-profit organization are
philanthropists that give wholeheartedly to the
cause. The Mӧller family is one donor which
has given enthusiastically to the Point Hill
Diagnostic Reading Centre.
They are a family of six multinational people. Mr. Mӧller is Norwegian and Mrs. Mӧller is a Jamaican-Canadian. The family is accustomed to giving back to communities. They help to support a school and Community Development Centre in Gamalachke: a small community, south of Durban, South Africa. This South African project is supported both by The Mӧllers’ and Mr. Mӧller’s brother and sisters’ families. Their son, Xavier, who recently graduated from high-school, has just returned from South Africa where he spent three months as a voluntary math teacher at the school. It is therefore, no surprise that the Mӧller family is supporting the Centre.
In Jamaica
The reading Centre and School (Point Hill Primary & Junior High) came to The Mӧllers’ attention through Ms. Carol Narcisse who is a very close friend of Mrs. Mӧller and sits on the
Board of the PHDRC. They were further
assured of this worthy activity, having met
with Jane Taylor, her husband and all of the staff and students at the Centre. Says Mrs. Mӧller: “It is very important for us to feel that we are contributing if even in a very small way to the development of young people. The Reading Centre and School give us that opportunity. The sense of giving back is central and we have been lucky enough to have the resources to make this a reality.”
The Goals of The Taylor-Mӧllers Fund
A fundamental, underlying intent of The Mӧllers’ is that the funds be used ‘to encourage self sustaining, empowering activities’. The Centre and The Mӧllers’ have a prefect union. So far, the Fund has supported the following: a. Part-funded a nutritional programme
b. Supported the literacy programme
c. Enabled a computer-aided programme for
students
d. Funded some seating and tables for lunch
room
e. Assisted with critical operational expenses
Look Forward
For 2011 the fund will support the Centre to: a) continue supporting the literacy department b) restart the Business Centre
We express gratitude to The Mӧllers’ for their support and we anticipate an extensive and fruitful collaboration with them.
