■ The Truth Ministry Resale open house will be held this Saturday, December 6 at the old Portage School from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be refreshments, hourly sales in the thrift store, door prizes and tours

of the building. There will also be a fundraising booth from the Humane Society of Ottawa County along with adoptable pets onsite.

■ We had to cancel this week’s Coffee with the Editor due to a couple of scheduling conflicts. So, join us for our next Coffee with the Editor session at Common Grounds held “almost” every Wednesday morning at 9 a.m. Each Wednesday we have a small group that discusses local issues and we get good ideas about community news stories to cover.

■ Ottawa County Senior Resources will celebrate its 6th annual Holiday Open House and Resource Fair this Friday, December 5, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Ot-tawa County Fairgrounds, Building 3. Hors d’oeuvres and beverages will be served throughout the event. Entertainment will be provided by Riverview Health-care Campus Administrator Kendra German. The open house will feature senior service providers from Ottawa and surrounding counties who will be able to answer questions and distribute information about their services.

■ The Wreaths Across America program has become so special during the Holiday Season that the Ottawa County Veterans Administration has seen fit to take it County-wide! It all started last December, in a snow-storm, at Catawba Cemetery, where Reggie Langford and Diane Belden joined forces to make it happen in a very moving ceremony. This year, they will be placing wreaths at the gravesites of nearly all Ottawa County Veterans at cemeteries across Ottawa County.

for the Humane Society of Ottawa County to keep its doors open. As we celebrate this great achievement we give thanks to the great people who have made this hap-pen. You might know them as many are your neighbors, friends and colleagues.

With your help, we respond to pets who have nowhere else to turn and heal abandoned and neglected pets in our community and then find them amazing new fami-lies. We are so luck to count on you as our friends.

As you know, we receive no government funding and

we depend on the relationships with the people in our community- amazing individuals like you. On behalf of the pets who will be served by your generosity, we also give special thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Pastore, Di-ane Rozak, her mother, Mary Ann Gecsi, The Nor’Easter Club, Paul T. and Joyce Bohlander, Julene Market, Walmart and North Coast Cigar Connection and its pa-trons.

BY JASMINE CUPPEditor’s note: With

the news of Issue 6’s passing, Mayor Leone and Port Clinton City Council (who cam-paigned against the issue) are regrouping. This month when I sat down with the Mayor I asked him how he felt on the outcome of Issue 6 and what the next step is to move Port Clinton forward.

I have received numerous phone calls, emails and texts that said that people thought voting yes was a vote for moving forward. I hope and assume that people aren’t voting on information that they are getting on Facebook; that information is opinion, not fact. It is extremely impor-tant to me to be accessible for information now.

I am starting a Mayor’s Night Out town hall series where I will sit down and speak with the citizens of Port Clinton. I want people to come to these meetings and get information from me; this affords me to get the correct information out into the public.

I have seen the success from the Coffee with the Editor sessions. Sitting and talk-ing with people and answering their ques-tions and concerns in that environment is a great way to get information out and to hear back from citizens.

Issue 6 was nothing more than a hurdle. We need to be more informative to vot-ers so they have the right information to make educated decisions. As an admin-istration, we are tasked with doing more with less. Affording the citizens to see how the City runs and why things take so long to accomplish and how they are done will alleviate confusion.

At the last City Council meeting held on Tuesday, November 25, CORD repre-sentative Rick Noderer stated that you (Mayor) and City Council were proven untrustworthy with the passing of Issue 6 and that CORD has a better feel for the opinions of the community than the ad-ministration. What are your thoughts on that?

In my opinion, it was a careless state-ment. There have been inconsistencies on their explanation of Issue 6 and this has contributed to the confusion on the issue. If they have such a great handle on it, why aren’t they running for office?

Gary Philabaum ran and was over-whelmingly defeated after going door to door campaigning on saving Waterworks Park. The constituents would lead me to believe CORD has defined Issue 6 incon-sistently and in many different ways.

I am grateful that the administration and council don’t act as recklessly, contrary to the belief of CORD.

When will the Mayor’s Night Out town hall meetings start?

Thursday, December 4, is the first meet-ing. It will be at 6 p.m. at the Council Chambers at City Hall. The next meeting will be Thursday, January 8, at a time and place to be determined. I am excited for the opportunity for the citizens to sit down with me and any members of the adminis-tration that can attend to get information straight from the horse’s mouth; informa-tion that can be backed by public record.

Issue 6 showed me that we need to share more information with the public on all is-sues concerning the City.

Announcing Mayor’s Night Out town hall forums

An ordinance creating Chapter 707 of the codified ordinances of the City of Port Clinton regulating garage sales was passed 5 to 1 at the November 18 city council meeting. The ordinance states that the City has the authority to regulate the time, location and conduct of garage sales conducted in the City.

The ordinance defines garage sales as “a sale of any tangible personal property to the general public in any residence, yard, garage or outbuilding in any zoning dis-trict of the City.” The ordinance requires any garage sale held in the City to have a permit.

THE ORDINANCE STATES:

No person, firm or corporation shall sell, or offer for sale, tangible personal prop-erty in a residence, yard, garage or out-building of such residence in any Zoning District in the municipality without first having obtained a garage sale permit from the Safety Service Director, or his/her designee.

APPLICATION AND FEE

• No fee will be charged for the issu-ance of the permit.

• Only three garage sale permits shall be issued for a single address in any

three month period and shall not be valid for more than three consecutive days.

• The permit must be displayed on the premises during the garage sale.

• Application for a garage sale permit shall be made at least seven days in ad-vance of the sale and no sale shall commence be-fore the hour of 8 a.m. or extend later than 5 p.m.

• During the garage sale, permit holders must ex-hibit permit certificate upon request of any City police officer.

PENALTY

Whoever violates any provision of this chapter shall be guilty of a minor misdemeanor. Each day on which a violation occurs or continues shall be deemed a separate offense. A minor misdemeanor carries a fine of up to $150 per day.

The Beacon office, located at 205 SE Ca-tawba Rd. Suite G, Port Clinton, is collect-ing new, unwrapped toys to be distributed in Ottawa County. The Helping Hand Toy Drive is a collaboration of community partners including the Ottawa County

Holiday Bureau, The Salvation Army Port Clinton Service Unit and Toys of Tots Weapons Company 1/24.

The donations will be collected on De-cember 15.

The death of a child is devastating and it’s important to the family that the child always be remembered. That’s why mem-bers The Compassionate Friends (TCF) of Ottawa County will participate in an an-nual worldwide event designed to honor the memories of all children, regardless of age, who have died. The Chapter is join-ing Sunday, December 14, with hundreds of organized memorial services around the world for The Compassionate Friends 18th annual Worldwide Candle Lighting, an event now believed to be the largest mass candle lighting in the world.

The local candle lighting will be part of a special service held at 6:45 p.m. at The Compassionate Friends of Ottawa County Children’s Memorial in Lakeview Park and will feature readings, poems, prayers and refreshments. Annually tens of thousands of families, united in loss, light candles for one hour during the Worldwide Candle Lighting, held the second Sunday in De-cember. Candles are first lit at 7 p.m., local time, just west of the International Date Line. As candles burn down in one time zone, they are lighted in the next, creating a 24-hour wave of light as the observance continues around the world.

“This is our gift to the bereavement com-munity,” says TCF/USA Executive Direc-tor Alan Pedersen.

“The holiday season is an extremely dif-ficult time of the year for families griev-ing the death of a child. This marks well one and a half decades the Worldwide Candle Lighting has united bereaved fam-ilies around the globe as a symbolic way of showing the love we continue to carry for our children, even though they can no longer be with us physically. This candle lighting transcends all ethnic, cultural, re-ligious, and political boundaries as tens of thousands of families share in this world-wide memorial event.

“Here, throughout the United States,” Mr. Pedersen adds, “members of our 650 Chapters observe this day in differ-ing ways, some alone, some with friends and family, and many in organized can-dle lighting ceremonies like the service planned by The Compassionate Friends of Ottawa County. We invite everyone, whether or not they have suffered the per-sonal loss of a child, to join in this moving tribute.”

With the theme “…that their light may always shine,” the Worldwide Candle Lighting has grown larger every year with formal services last year in all 50 United States and Washington D.C., as well as at least 19 countries around the world. TCF’s national website, www.compassionate-friends.org, is expected to receive and post information on more than the 550 servic-es submitted to and listed on its website last year. The website will also have open for posts a Remembrance Book December 14 which, in a 24-hour-period will receive thousands of tributes from family mem-bers and other caring individuals.

To contact The Compassionate Friends of Ottawa County, call Roseann Hick-man at 419-308-4690. For more informa-tion about the national organization and locations of its Chapters nationwide, call 877-969-0010 or visit TCF’s national web-site, www.compassionatefriends.org. The Compassionate Friends has a presence in at least 30 countries and is the world’s largest self-help bereavement organiza-tion.

Real Estate Transfers

BY TAMMY MINTONStepping into the Twisted Sisters Gal-

lery is like becoming the proverbial kid in the candy store. Everywhere you look there is another unique item. With a list of 39 contributing artists, Twisted Sis-ters has something for anyone on your Christmas shopping list.

Co-owners Sheri Warner and Donna Schoonmaker met over 8 years ago while working in the same real estate office. Fast becoming friends, they had many conversations about their mutual love of art, always ending up with we should open a gallery someday. When the perfect location in downtown Mar-blehead became available, they knew it was time. Sheri and Donna opened their small gallery in May of 2013 with just 7 artists.

True artists themselves, Donna has numerous water color paintings dis-played. She specializes in birds and na-ture themes. Sheri is a repurposer and crafter, taking bits and pieces to create new items. Both ladies are also very

happy to talk about the stories behind their artists and the one of a kind objects for sale.

Handmade signs by Tony and Diana Grant are made from tobacco lathes, they are then hand painted with various sayings. Two of the other wood craft-ers, Duane Scott and Bill Smith, bring beautiful creations to life using seg-mented wood and reclaimed wood as their mediums. The wool art and pottery of Deb Yeagle and photography of Terry Vacha mingle amongst beach glass jew-elry, handmade scarves, dolls, soap and hundreds of other unique pieces of art. Sheri and Donna also can arrange for consignments of original ideas.

Located at 318 W. Main Street in Mar-blehead, the shop is open year round; opening at 11 a.m. on Monday, Thursday and Friday, closing at 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday the gallery opens at 10 a.m. They also have a Facebook page, Twist-ed Sisters Gallery, where there is a fea-tured artist of the week.

Graffin looks to rebuild a strong foundation in PCBY YANEEK SMITH

Forecast: Von Graffin is in this for the long haul. The 1979 Port Clinton graduate, who previously coached

at Bowling Green, where he experienced his share of suc-cess, and won a state championship with Jim Jackson as an assistant at Macomber High School in Toledo in 1989, is prepared to build this program from the ground up.

Graffin wants to build a strong foundation with the youth program and hopes to instill a mentality within the community that has kids playing basketball a great deal in the offseason.

“I want kids that want to put in 100,000 shots in be-tween the season,” he said. “I know what it takes from a young age. I want to make Port Clinton that kind of place.”

In 11 seasons at Bowling Green, Graffin accumulated a 148-94 record, including a 111-43 mark in the Northern Lakes League, a conference that features the likes of Per-rysburg, Sylvania Southview and Anthony Wayne. He won two league titles (2003, ‘11) and won a sectional title in his final season with the Bobcats. His best player on that team, Vito Brown, is currently a sophomore at the Univ. of Wisconsin. In all, he’s coached 28 players that went on to play sports at the collegiate level.

In the meantime, he’s concerned with his current roster, one that includes four seniors and three juniors.

The Rumball brothers, Carter and Tytan, start in the backcourt together. Carter, a 6-1 senior point guard, will lead the offense and use his athletic ability and basket-ball I.Q. to help him play a position he’s unaccustomed to. Tytan, a 6-2 junior, some varsity action last season and

looks to form a potent duo with his brother.Senior Stefan Daniels, a 6-1 wing, 6-4 sophomore Joey

Brenner, who can play both the wing and post positions, and 6-3 junior post Drew Foder round out the starting lineup.

Daniels and the Rumball brothers should provide the Redskins with some athleticism while Brenner and Foder should be able to use their size to an advantage. Brenner, a versatile talent, is also capable of playing out on the pe-rimeter.

The key reserves will be two seniors, 5-10 point guard Cal Laurel and 6-2 post Marcus Hogan, and 6-1 junior wing Ryan Alexander.

“What I like about these kids is that all but one is they’re multiple-sport athletes,” Graffin said. “They see other coaching styles, use other muscles, and that’s huge. I re-ally enjoyed celebrating with the football team, and hope-fully we can carry that over to the winter.”

Expect the Redskins to compete this season.“Our kids will play hard and represent Port Clinton very

well,” Graffin said. “We’re going to win some games, lose some games; the behavior of the men on the floor will make people very, very happy in the community.

In the long run, Graffin is hoping that his club can be-come one of the top teams in the Sandusky Bay Confer-ence that has a chance to make a run in the tournament on a regular basis.

“I expect to get Port Clinton into the top-half of the SBC,” he said. (And) do I think we can play for a district title every couple years? Absolutely.”

PC girls look to replace Colston, Thorbahn

BY YANEEK SMITHForecast: Despite losing Tiffany Colston and Hope

Thorbahn, the Port Clinton Redskins have some firepow-er returning to their lineup in the form of 5-8 senior post Emily Ashley. Ashley, who gained valuable experience in the past, is now the go-to scorer for the team that must replace Colston and Thorbahn, two 1,000-point scorers.

In the last two seasons, Port Clinton has won nearly 80% of its games, going 38-10, winning a sectional title and finishing second in the Sandusky Bay Conference twice. This year’s group hopes to continue the success the program has experienced in recent years.

Senior point guard Hannah Weaver (5-6) and 5-7 junior wing Marissa Day return to team up in the backcourt, and 5-5 junior wing Adrianna Hall will also join them. Betha-ny Urban (5-8) will see time as both a wing and a post, as will 5-9 junior Sydney Alexander.

Junior point guard Kasey Swander (5-0) will back up Weaver at point guard and 5-9 junior post Ebony Klein-hans will help to round out the eight-man rotation.

This new group has a chance to continue the winning ways of the program while establishing a name for them-selves. It’s an opportunity that head coach Toby Bickel believes his team will embrace.

“Most definitely,” he said of them taking on the chal-lenge. “Several of the ju-niors we have waited their turn. They played JV for a couple years and had some good years -- I feel like it’s their time now. I feel like they’re wanting to prove themselves and they want

to make sure they don’t have a drop-off. They want to continue (the winning ways).”

Bickel likes what he has with this group.“With Emily and Hannah, they both played quite a bit

the last few years,” he said. “Bethany Urban came in and played an integral role in the last 5-6 games for us last year, (and) Marissa Day played varsity last year. It’s not like we don’t have kids back. We lost our size, and then when you lose two 1,000-point scorers, you lose scoring. Some of the kids’ role have to be different. They have to do things differently (this year).”

After two games, the ‘Skins are currently 1-1. They lost to one of the state’s best teams, Bellevue, 86-46, in the opener before rebounding to defeat Woodmore, 58-32.

Clyde, which won the conference four straight times, was picked to finish second behind Oak Harbor. Port Clinton is expected to finish in the top-half of the league as well.

“Until somebody beats Clyde, they’re still the champi-on,” Bickel said. “It’s a different team. I think OH is very good. I think there’s a lot of teams that can beat each oth-er (in the SBC).”

Head Coach: Toby BickelLast Year: 17-6 (11-3 SBC)Key Losses: Tiffany Colston, 5-10, F; Hope Thorbahn, 5-10, F; Paige Culver 5-7, W; Kristen Wood, 5-4, G; Maddie Burris, 5-6, WKey Returners: Emily Ashley, 5-8, W, Sr.; Hannah Weaver, 5-6, PG, Sr.; Bethany Urban, 5-8, W/P, Jr.; Marissa Day, 5-7, W, Jr.

Head Coach: Eric SweetLast Year: 7-15 (0-14 SBC)Key Losses: Andy Rathbun, 5-11, W; Josh Sarahman, 6-4, P; Derek Wood, 5-10, W; Tate Haar, 5-9, WKey Returners: DeShaun Johnson, 6-3, PG; Tyler Sievert, 6-0, W; Cole Weirich, 5-8, W; Andre Ramsey, 5-9, PG, Sr.; Paul Shay, 5-9, W, Sr.

BY YANEEK SMITHForecast: Last year, Oak Harbor was in

a position where it had to replace the vast majority of its production from the year before.

This time around, however, the Rockets have a lot of their top players returning.

Oak Harbor returns the likes of 6-3 se-nior point guard DeShaun Johnson, senior wings Tyler Sievert (6-0) and Cole Weirich (5-8) and 5-9 senior point guard Andre Ramsey.

Vince Szabo, a 6-3 senior post, will pro-vide a physical presence down low, and some of the other wings include 5-9 senior Paul Shay and 6-1 junior Kalob Vargas.

Under head coach Eric Sweet, defense has never been a problem for the Rockets. In fact, the team led the Sandusky Bay Conference in allowing only 42 points per game last season. But what they lacked was firepower. Now, with the likes of Johnson, a versatile talent that is capable of playing in the post and on the perimeter as well as players like Ramsey, Sievert and Weirich, Oak Harbor now has a more ca-pable group of scorers. And when you add in 5-9 senior wing Paul Shay, the Rockets have a legitimate three-point shooter.

What Oak Harbor lacks in size, it makes

up for with athleticism. The club will likely employ a four-guard rotation and should benefit from the fact that many of its play-ers are in their second year at the varsity level, making the learning curve much less steep this time around.

Two years ago, the Rockets made a huge leap, going from 3-18 to 11-12, a definite sign that Sweet has things headed in the right direction.

This could be a prime year for another rebound as the Sandusky Bay Conference expects to be down from a year ago. Three of the top teams, Huron, Clyde and Per-kins all lost key contributors, giving Oak Harbor a better shot at upward mobility.

In addition to their league slate, the Rockets play an extensive non-conference schedule that features Genoa, Old Fort, St. Mary CC, Tiffin Columbian, Bellevue, Eastwood, Lake, St. Joseph CC, Lakota and Woodmore. Most of those games are quite winnable, and if Oak Harbor takes care of business outside of the SBC, they’ll have the chance to accumulate some wins.

The Rockets begin the season Fri-day when they travel to Genoa to face the Comets before coming home to host Old Fort on Saturday. League play begins on Dec. 12 when Oak Harbor hosts Edison.

Oak Harbor boys hope experience pays off

BY YANEEK SMITHForecast: Oak Harbor’s season ended

last year in heartbreak when Bucyrus Wynford’s Meghan Harrer connected on a three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Royals a 40-37 win in the Division III Dis-trict Finals.

The Rockets are now using that as moti-vation to make another run in the tourna-ment, and they’ve certainly got the play-ers capable of taking them there.

They lost just one player, point guard Amanda Hetrick, and return All-Ohioan Andrea Cecil. Cecil, a 6-0 junior who re-cently committed to play basketball at Bowling Green State Univ., plays both wing and post, a sign of her versatility. Cecil is the engine that drive the Rockets, a force both offensively and defensively that has the capability to take over a game at any time.

Fellow wing Emma Barney, a 5-10 sopho-more, burst onto the scene last year, along with fellow sophomore Maddy Rathbun, a 5-8 post. How they progress this season will be instrumental

“I’ve always said that a player’s biggest growth is freshman to sophomore,” Oak Harbor head coach Tom Kontak. “Then, the players tend to have a little more ma-turity. They just get a sense of what the varsity style is all about. And both of them are on pace to take on that sort of addi-tional ability.”

Joining them in the starting lineup is 5-5 freshman point guard Abby Dornbusch and 5-5 junior wing Athena Eli.

Eli made strides last season, moving from JV to a starting role, and is expected to be a contributor again this year. Dorn-busch, meanwhile, will have to take on the task of running the offense.

“Abby has been a leader, a point guard,” Kontak said. “She gets that part, that re-sponsibility; she’s not afraid of that. Now, you just have a different speed -- you go from junior high to high school where you have a collective group that has ability as well. It’s a game-to-game learning pro-cess, but Abby is a quick learner and she’s very athletic and she is very determined to led her Rocket team.”

Sophomore wing Emma Bergman (5-5) and juniors Brandy Lochotzki, a 5-6 wing, and Allie Kuhn, a 5-10 post, will be the Rockets’ primary reserves off the bench.

In just two seasons, Kontak has helped to turn things around in Oak Harbor, which went 7-14 before he took over. Since then, Oak Harbor has gone 36-13 (.735) and won a sectional title. Right now, he is just con-cerned with his team taking this one day at a time.

“We really haven’t set any long-term goals,” Kontak said. “We’re learning our-selves. We play with great enthusiasm and great team play. Our goals are short-term -- take it one game at a time. Play every quarter the best we can, and not get caught up in what might be -- external expecta-tions that can at times be overwhelming. The wins and losses will be a byproduct of that effort that you give everyday.”

Danbury boys hope to continue progressingBY YANEEK SMITH

Forecast: In the last two years, the Danbury Lakers have seen steady improvement.

And with most of their key players returning, there’s reason to believe this could be the year that Danbury takes the next step and establishes itself with some of the better teams in the Toledo Area Athletic Conference.

The Lakers have a capable starting five that consists of 5-9 junior point guard John Rhodes and 5-8 junior wing Connor Lenthe in the backcourt with 5-9 senior wing Ryan Chapman and 6-1 senior wing Caleb Gerber, a quartet that forms a four-guard rotation. Senior post Hunter Stinchcomb stands 6-3 and rounds out the start-ing lineup.

Unfortunately, two key players are currently out with injuries.

Seth Vargo, a 6-3 sophomore who splits time at wing and post, and 6-1 sophomore Grady Mark, a 6-1 wing who sometimes plays point guard, are battling injuries. Vargo broke his ankle during football season and is expected back around Jan. 1 while Mark’s status is a little more un-certain. He is currently being evaluated by doctors and his status is unknown at this point. Head coach Drew Da-vie knows that the services of both players are valuable in helping his team reach new heights this season.

“We have a lot of experience back this year,” he said. “Guys like John Rhodes and Connor Lenthe that have been playing since they were freshman, (and) Hunter and Caleb will be three-year starters. Those guys have gone

through the tough times, (and) those times are going to make them stronger.”

Some of the role players will be 6-1 junior Ben Schank, who can play both the wing and post positions, 6-3 post Brad Pruitt, a freshman, and 5-9 senior post Ken Fleming. They’ll be asked to do a lot for the club with the injuries to Vargo and Mark.

Based on what he’s seen in scrimmages, Davie likes what he’s seen from the group.

“They’ve got pretty good chemistry, they get along well,” he said. “They’re a good group of kids. Based on their re-lationships off the court, that’s helped them on the court as well. We stress pushing the ball up the floor. We really emphasize that and at times that’s our best offense.”

Things won’t be easy in the TAAC, one of Ohio’s best small-school basketball conferences. Ottawa Hills, last year’s champion, is expected to compete with Toledo Christian and Gibsonburg for the top spots in the league this season. Cardinal Stritch and Maumee Valley Country Day should be pretty good, too.

“I absolutely believe that our goals have been to improve on what we did the previous year,” Davie said. “First and foremost, we want to prepare each night as if we’re going to win the game. One of our goals is to take it one game at a time, but also to improve on the past and hopefully get double-digit wins. There are some teams in the TAAC that have lost some talented players, but those teams just reload. The players they’ve had in the lower levels are pretty good.”

Head Coach: Drew DavieLast Year: 5-18 (4-10 TAAC)

Key Losses: Dominic Manuella, 5-9, W; Keegan Rakosky, 5-9, W

Key Returners: Caleb Gerber, 6-1, W, Sr.; Hunter Stinchcomb, 6-3, P, Sr.; Ryan Chapman, 5-9, W, Sr.; John Rhodes, 5-9, PG, Jr.; Connor Lenthe, 5-8, W, Jr.; Seth Vargo, 6-3, W/P, So.; Grady Mark, 6-1, PG/W, So.

Danbury girls look to strengthen foundation

BY YANEEK SMITHForecast: Coming off a successful season has created

some momentum that Danbury is hoping to harness. Granted, the Lakers lost a lot of key players with the

graduation of Erin Lavelle, Tori Wright, Cassidy Rhodes and the Almendinger sisters, but they also return a lot of their production.

Back for another go around are senior posts Stephanie Kukay (6-0) and Megan Stephens (5-8), who will provide a solid presence down low.

Joining them in the starting lineup are 5-5 junior point guard Alyx Perram, 5-9 junior wing Lexi Mitchell and 5-7 freshman wing Sarah Redett. Junior Kelly Lavelle (5-7), a versatile talent that can play virtually any position on the floor, will be one of the first people off the bench, and 5-5 senior wing Nicole Ogelsee and 5-4 freshman point guard Robin Skinner join her as the key reserves.

First-year head coach Adam Steinbrick, who coached for the previous two seasons under Joe Fetzer, is very ex-cited about the players he has and is looking forward to building a stronger foundation in the hopes that the pro-gram can resemble what it did in the past -- one that was regularly competing for league titles. Right now, Danbury is in good shape, having gone 14-11 with a sectional title and a third-place finish in the Toledo Area Athletic Con-ference last season.

“(The players) know that the program’s rich in tradition and what they’re representing,” Steinbrick said. “People love this program. It’s something special, and they repre-sent that. They’ve been talked to about it, they’ve memo-rized the individuals who are in the 1,000-point club. They know very well about the tradition. We’re extremely proud of it, and we hope to add to it.”

“Stephanie could have a big year for us, as well as Me-gan Stephens, who’s such a strong defensive player. It’s nice with the rest of our girls; anyone could step up. Do we have a true standout? No, and that’s the beauty of it. If we play together as a team, we’ll be pretty good. I know they’re going to try like heck.

The combination of size and athleticism allows Stein-brick the option of going with small, quicker lineups ver-sus bigger, more imposing one.

“We can go with a pretty big lineup,” he said. “We’ll have a couple different lineups -- one’s a speed package, one is with taller players. We’re trying to create depth and come up with some different options.”

And despite losing a number of key contributors from last year’s team, Steinbrick is happy about what he cur-rently has in his arsenal.

“We lost five great seniors,” he said. “We have three seniors, three juniors and a great nucleus of freshman and sophomores. Every day is a pleasure to show up and coach -- they really go after it and work hard. There are going to be some speed bumps, (but) we just need to keep working and keep plugging away and we’re excited about what the future holds.”

As usual, the Lakers will play a non-conference sched-ule that features a number of bigger schools, ones like Huron, Genoa and Port Clinton, something that should prepare them for the conference.

“We know the types of kids we have, the character of them,” he said. “We just want to improve and get better and better. If we continue to do that, good things will happen at the end of the year. We’re just excited about the season and the kids we have.”

Head Coach: Adam SteinbrickLast Year: 14-11 (9-5 TAAC)Key Losses: Erin Lavelle, 5-8, PG; Tori Wright, 5-10, P; Cassidy Rhodes, 5-4, W; Katie Almendinger, 5-4, W; Alyssa Almendinger, 5-7, WKey Returners: Megan Stephens, 5-8, P, Sr.; Stephanie Kukay, 6-0, P, Sr.; Nicole Oglesbee, 5-5, W, Sr.; Kelly Lavelle, 5-7, W/P, Jr.; Alyx Perram, 5-5, PG, Jr.; Lexi Mitchell, 5-9, W, Jr.

The 13th Annual Holiday Breakfast with the Arts will be held on Tuesday, December 16, at Port Clinton High School for Port Clinton City School District residents age 60 and older. Tickets are on sale beginning December 1 at the high school office, Mary’s Blossom Shoppe, and Otto & Urban Greenhouse & Flower Shop until December 12.
