OBITUARIES from 2A

85-15Why is Port Clinton the only port on

Lake Erie without a city marina? The answer is hidden in the hidden agendas of only a few people within our commu-nity. Although names imply otherwise, some citizens within our community are still opposed to any responsible develop-ment of the Portage River area. When asked directly at the last Mayor’s forum whether they could accept a compromise from their zero development stance, no positive answer was tendered to those present. They have had eight years to render their own sustainable and fund-able plan. They have demonstrated no vision for our future, distain for any op-position, and have rendered no plans of their own.

On the front page of the May 14, 2015, issue of the Beacon, Mr. Schaffner suc-cinctly reviewed the progress and lack thereof since 2001 toward a goal of wa-terfront development. According to Mr. Schaffner, the old Waterworks area is actually not a park. It is a commercial-ly-zoned development area voted upon

by the citizens of Port Clinton. Here is a great question? Is there a compromise position that would retain a large major-ity of the area as green space, while en-suring that a city marina could flourish for the future generations of all of us who enjoy our city? According to Mr. Schaff-ner, the Washington Properties proposal is a plan that retains 85% of the old Wa-terworks development area as green space and only 15% as parking spaces, docks, and supportive infrastructure. This seems to be the ideal definition of responsible development.

I will repeat the question for everyone in our community. Does an 85%-15% responsible development plan seem like the way forward for our city’s future? Let’s resurface old conversations about the jobs a city marina would support. Let’s resurface old conversations about how a marina would anchor a city-wide renovation for our future generations. Let’s dust off the hard work of past administrations, support those who would spend money developing our

Loud live entertainmentMy wife and I love to go out and hear live entertainment

whenever we can. I wish the bands and bars would do more to lower the volume of the bands so it is possible to have a conversation while dinning. We have walked out of a few places. There is a volume button that the bands can use, louder is not always better. Our waitress last week almost had to scream to tell us the specials and we were sitting in the other room and near the door.

We love the music but not at the expense of having to read each other’s lips to converse. Please cut the volume from 8 down to 4. The music is great and we want to sup-port the owners who provide the great music and food.

ThanksAl Wilhelm

The City reminds residents that when decorating a loved one’s grave, decorations must be placed on the sides of the headstones, not in the front or the back.

On Tuesday, May 12, Main Street Port Clinton held a business roundtable at the Knights of Columbus. Rose-ann Hickman and Casey Madison, chairs of the promo-tion committee, ran the meeting. Downtown Improve-ment Grants were given out by Main Street treasurer Larry Hartlaub.

GRANT RECIPIENTS WERE:• Ala Carte, Lisa and Bill Black, $1280• Jolor, John Madison, $2850• 110 Madison Street of Port Clinton LLC, Denny

Bergeman, $2000• Clinton House, John and Carolyn Rodenhauser,

$2850• ASW Enterprise LLC, Aimee Slater-West, $2850• Toris Realty, David Grimmer, $2000

After each person was presented with their check, they spoke on what they were going to do with the grant mon-

ey and how it would affect their business operations.

Next Port Clinton Mayor Vince Leone spoke about the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) Grant, which was $3.24 million, and gave an up-date on the City’s progress. Construction on the Sec-ond Street project (phase one) is already on its way and Madison Street (phase two) is slated to start in 2016.

“I feel people have no idea how many people have made all of this hap-pen,” said Mayor Leone, “to bring this many proj-ects together is unheard of in Ohio. Altogether these projects total over $6 mil-lion. Without the partner-ships between the City and other entities, we would have not been able to capitalize on these grants. Without Main Street we wouldn’t have been able to go after these funds. These collaborative efforts have brought great success.”

“We should be proud that we came together to ac-complish this,” said Mayor Leone. “As you see this, you can smile knowing you’re part of something never seen before.”

Protecting your skin against cancer.May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month

James Fanning, MD

As the weather warms and you start to prepare for summer fun-in-the-sun, make sure you’re also being skin smart and protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful rays. Studies have shown that sun exposure is a leading cause for the development of skin cancers and culprit for nearly two-thirds of all melanomas, the most dangerous type of skin cancer.

“The good news is that most skin cancers are preventable and treatable if caught early,” says Cleveland Clinic medical oncologist James Fanning, MD. “Treating skin cancers like melanoma is often a team effort, based on the complexity and stage of the cancer. This could include a dermatologist, surgical oncologist, medical oncologist, and radiation oncologist.”

There are three main types of skin cancers:• Basal cell cancer, the most common type, grows slowly. An estimated 2.8

million basal cell cancers are diagnosed each year in the United States. “Any little sore or break in the skin that does not heal in a few months is a cause for concern,” says Dr. Fanning.

• Squamous cell cancer forms a lump or elevated patch of skin. Unlike basal cell cancer, it can metastasize. An estimated 700,000 squamous cell cancers are diagnosed each year, resulting in approximately 2,500 deaths.

• Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, can spread or metastasize to other organs quickly. It affects 1 in 55 Americans and is particularly common among Caucasians.

ABCDEs of skin cancerSkin surveillance saves lives, so scan your skin regularly. Most benign moles are round and have smooth borders.

These basic guidelines describe what cancerous lesions can look like:• “A” is for asymmetry. When a line is drawn down the center of the mole, benign

moles usually match on both sides.• “B” is for border. The edge of a melanoma lesion may have irregular, jagged

borders.• “C” is for color. The lesion should be the same color. Questionable moles are

varied shades of one color such as tan, brown or black.• “D” is for diameter. Melanomas are often larger than a pencil eraser head or 6mm.• “E” is for evolution. “Any type of mole that is evolving and is changing to be darker,

bigger, bleeding or itching needs to be examined quickly,” cautions Dr. Fanning.

When you’re outside, “slip, slop, slap and wrap” is the American Cancer Society’s (ACS) prevention slogan — slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen, slap on a hat, and wrap on sunglasses to protect your eyes and the sensitive skin around them. Also, avoid the sun from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

For an appointment with Dr. Fanning or another Cleveland Clinic Cancer Centers oncologist in Sandusky or Clyde, please call 419.626.9090.

Voted by his coworkers at the Port Clin-ton Police Department, Sergeant Josh Nelson was awarded Kiwanis’ Officer of the Year for a second time. Nelson was de-ployed for Operation Iraqi Freedom from January through December in 2008. He became a patrolman in 2007 and became sergeant in 2013.

Nelson has a wife, Sara, and two sons, Andrew and Griffin, and is the handler for the PCPD K9, Spike.

Winning Deputy of the Year for the Otta-wa County Sheriff’s Office is Deputy John

Knecht. Kenecht started his career within the communications division of the sher-iff’s office in September 2006.

In February 2015, Knecht and his part-ner at the time, Rudy Hanzel, used their instincts and took the initiative when receiving a 911 call. The call received sounded like no one was there, but the woman on the other end was the victim of a kidnapping. With the quick thinking of Knecht and Hanzel they were able to acquire the location of the vehicle and di-rected patrol units to help the woman.

Artist and Lighthouse Conservancy member Tammy Almendinger has cre-ated works of art out of the scraps from the Port Clinton Lighthouse construction.

“It took 100 years to turn the copper to verdigreen, artists try to recreate this pro-cess but we have it naturally right here with our lighthouse material,” said Al-mendinger.

Right now Mary’s Blossom Shoppe on Madison Street in downtown Port Clinton is the only retail outlet that carries the re-cycled art from the lighthouse. The money made with the art is being donated to the Port Clinton Lighthouse Conservancy to go towards maintinence and landscaping when the lighthouse is placed.

BY LINDA HUBER, LHS BOARD MEMBERAlthough people may view the three-day Memorial Day

Weekend as the unofficial start to the summer season, there is an honorable significance to Memorial Day. The Lakeside Heritage Society (LHS) would like to invite you to learn more about this Day of Remembrance. On Sun-day, May 24, at 2 p.m. the LHS will hold a free special Sunday lecture in Chautauqua Hall at Fountain Inn. The hour-long presentation will provide a brief history of Memorial Day followed by the PBS documentary, “Hol-lowed Grounds: America’s Overseas Military Cemeter-ies”. The film reviews the 22 U.S. cemeteries that were es-

tablished after World War I and World War II and the battles which were fought in the respective areas.

This is a free program as is the entire 2015 LHS Sun-day Lecture Series. Other

Sunday lectures include WWII on the Lakeside-Marble-head Homefront: 1943-45 Newspaper Reports; U.S. Life Saving Service (1874-1915) & U.S. Coast Guard (1915-Pres-ent); Lakeside & Marblehead Railroad 1887-1964; John Clarke--1930s Lakeside Plein Art Artist; the Temperance Movement; Florida Chautauqua: 1885-1920 & Now; His-toric Richards Hotel; William Gill-Danbury Township Civil War Soldier; From Camp Meeting to Religious Com-munity; and the series ends with Memorable Lakeside Residents.

Admission to Lakeside Chautauqua campus: On Sun-days, there is a free Church Pass available between 7:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. and is valid until 3 p.m. This pass al-lows you to attend the Sunday morning worship service, dine, explore the shops, visit the Lakeside Heritage Soci-ety Museum and attend the free 2 p.m. Sunday Lecture Series program. The Church Pass includes admission for guests and auto and will be collected upon departing the grounds.

Day of Remembrance

Theculturetrip.com named Marblehead and Put-in-Bay two of the top ten most beautiful towns in Ohio. Their list names towns “brimming with history, Midwest charm and beautiful landscapes”.

MARBLEHEADFounded in 1891 and nestled on the top of the scenic

Marblehead Peninsula, the charming village of Marble-head boasts beautiful views out over Lake Erie and San-dusky Bay and a true slice of small town Americana. Thanks to its enviable location and laidback lakeside am-bience, Marblehead is something of a mecca for visitors hoping to escape the hustle and bustle of the city with plenty of activities for holidaymakers from fishing to boating to cute store and local restaurants. The town is also home to Marblehead Lighthouse- which built in 1821 is Great Lakes’ oldest continuously operating lighthouse- open for tours in summertime.

PUT-IN-BAYLocated on tiny South Bass Island around five miles

from the Ohio mainland, Put-in-Bay is a picturesque is-land town and popular summer tourist destination when thousands flock to enjoy the town’s quaint restaurants, lively pubs and recreational activities like walleye and perch fishing it’s no wonder Put-in-Bay is often nick-named the Key West of the North. History buffs will de-light in its historic homes and pivotal role in the War of 1812. Perry’s Victory and International Peace Monument, a 352 foot high Doric column and one of the USA’s tallest monuments, towers over Put-in-Bay’s harbor and com-memorates Oliver Hazard Perry’s victory over British forces in the waters off the island.

BY CHUCK KLETECKA, PORT CLINTON POWER SQUADRON EDUCATION OFFICER

The Port Clinton Power Squadron provides free vessel checks. Our objective is to help you determine if you have the proper safety equipment on board. We don’t fail boats or report them to any enforcement agency and we don’t sell any equipment. Our motivation is safety. We enjoy boating and want to encourage others to do the same: safely.

But why would you want to have a vessel safety check? Here are some reasons:

SAFETY EQUIPMENTThe U.S. Coast Guard requires that all boats meet cer-

tain safety standards which include safety equipment. The particular equipment required depends upon the specific boat. Law enforcement agencies are authorized to stop boats and check to insure that the equipment is in good working condition. So you need the equipment on board.

PEACE OF MINDWhen you get the “passed” decal it gives you a sense

of confidence that from an equipment point of view you are in good shape. This is particularly important for new boaters who are not sure what is needed.

IT MAY SAVE YOUR LIFEThis sounds a bit dramatic. But since we have little con-

trol over engine malfunctions and no control over the weather, it is essential that we have the equipment to see us through boating difficulties. Even in good weather we want to make sure we have the means to contact or warn other boaters if we are in a difficult situation, like on a sandbar — which occasionally happens in our area.

SIGNALS OTHERSA “passed” decal on your boat shows others, includ-

ing enforcement agencies, that you are safety conscious. The decal doesn’t guarantee that you will not be stopped. But it demonstrates that you have the proper operational equipment. Furthermore, provided something has not failed since the inspection, you will not get ticketed for an equipment violation — which can be a pretty expen-sive fine and tends to ruin an otherwise good day on the water.

SAVE MONEY ON INSURANCESome insurance companies offer discounted rates for

owners who routinely have valid safety checks. Further-more many companies provide discounts for owners who participate in safe boating classes.

EDUCATIONIt’s an opportunity to meet a dedicated knowledgeable

boat owner — the examiner. Often the boat inspection is the first step in safety education. It is a good way for new or inexperienced boaters to learn about organizations, classes and other local boating issues and activities.

IT’S FREEA vessel safety check takes about 15 -20 minutes of your

time. Of course, you need to have the equipment — but you need that anyway.

If you would like to have your boat checked. Please visit our website at portclintonpowersquadron.org or the na-tional site at USPS.org

Lakeside Chautauqua was recently recognized as a Tree City USA community at the Northwest Ohio awards ceremony hosted by the City of Toledo and their Urban Forestry Commission.

This is the fourth time the Chautauqua community has been honored with this nationally recognized award.

Lakeside Chautauqua received this honor for its ongo-ing efforts to maintain and improve the quality of life through a comprehensive park and street tree manage-ment program. The program is guided by the Lakeside Tree Advisory Team, Board of Directors and the Munici-pal Services Department.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry acts as a guiding hand in helping a commu-nity to become qualified as a Tree City USA.

The Urban Forester recommends a community to the Arbor Day Foundation for this standing. In order to achieve the title and the honors, a community must meet four standards: a Tree Ordinance, an active Tree Com-mission (the Tree Advisory Team) or forestry department; a comprehensive urban forestry program supported by a minimum of two dollars per capita; and an annual Arbor Day proclamation and public observance.

The state of Ohio currently boasts the greatest number of Tree Cities in the country, with a grand total of 250 this past year.

This marks Ohio’s 34th year as the top Tree City USA state, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Re-sources, Division of Forestry. Fifty-six of Northwest Ohio›s communities are Tree Cities.

For additional information about the Tree City USA program or the Arbor Day

Foundation, visit arborday.org.

Chapel on the Lake will hold a Memorial Day Weekend yard sale Thursday, May 21, through Monday, May 25. Items include furniture, quilts, shoes, clothing, art sup-plies, collectables and more. There will be hot dogs and drinks available on Friday and Saturday. The yard sale is being held as a benefit for an individual who has an urgent need.

The public is invited back to the pavilion beginning at 9 a.m. Thursday, May 21. The sale will be open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. each day. There will be no sales before 9 a.m.

Trash being thrown along our local roads is unattractive and a burden for local gov-ernments. It can also be costly in time and maintenance of equipment for city, county and township road crews when they are working or mowing along our roadways. Litter is also a hazard for animals in their natural habitats.

In an effort to reduce those costs and the danger of unsightly litter, local agencies and community volunteers are working to-gether to solve the problem. The OSS Solid Waste District contracts with the county Juvenile Courts in Ottawa, Sandusky and Seneca Counties for supervision of a Lit-ter Crew to clean District roadways. The District’s Adopt-A-Road program allows citizens to adopt an area and remove lit-ter from designated county and township roadways, weather permitting. The Litter Crews and Adopt-A-Road Groups remove thousands of pounds of debris from coun-ty and township roads during the course of a year.

Both programs typically operate April through October; unless the weather is favorable, then the programs can be ex-tended. Litter Crew members are youth in

each county’s jurisdiction who have been assigned community service hours by the Juvenile Court Judge. In 2014 the crews spent 8,814 hours cleaning 1,313 miles of district roadways. In that time the crews collected 1,181 trash bags weighing 9,746 pounds. In addition, recyclable materials are separated and are recycled. The crews collected 600 bags containing recyclable materials (like aluminum, glass and plas-tic) weighing 3,818 pounds.

Adopt-A-Road groups consist of busi-nesses, civic and youth groups, families and schools. Volunteers commit to clean-ing a two mile stretch of roadway a mini-mum of four times each year. In 2014, 23 groups consisting of 340 members volun-teered 580 man hours. The groups col-lected 229 bags of litters weighing an esti-mated 2,289 pounds.

The Litter Crews and Adopt-A-Road Groups for 2015 have already begun pick-ing up litter along the roadways. When approaching an individual or group pick-ing up litter while driving our county and township roadways, please take caution and slow down.

The 4R Nutrient Stewardship Certifica-tion Program has announced that Luckey Farmers, Inc.’s facilities in Bradner and Graytown have been added to its grow-ing list of nutrient service providers to achieve certified status.

The voluntary certification program is a concentrated effort by the agriculture industry to significantly reduce and pre-vent applied nutrients from running off fields, which has contributed to harmful algal blooms in Lake Erie, such as the one responsible for the shutdown of Toledo’s water supply in early August 2014.

The 4R Nutrient Stewardship Certifica-tion Program certifies that entities in the tri-state area that sell, apply or make rec-ommendations on how fertilizers should be applied to crops are doing so in ac-cordance with 4R Nutrient Stewardship principals which refer to using the Right Source of Nutrients at the Right Rate and Right Time in the Right Place. Applicants

must go through an audit and demon-strate they not only understand 4R prin-cipals, but also follow them.

More than 1.1 million acres and approxi-mately 3000 farm clients are serviced by those who have received 4R Nutrient Stewardship Certification, with 60 per-cent of them being in the Western Lake Erie basin.

The 4R Nutrient Stewardship Certifica-tion Program is governed and guided by the Nutrient Stewardship Council, a di-verse set of stakeholders from business, government, university and non-gov-ernmental sectors with a common goal of maintaining agricultural productivity while also improving the quality of Lake Erie and its contributing watersheds.

The program is administered by the Ohio AgriBusiness Association. For more information visit 4Rcertified.org.

Bay Point Yacht Club goes mainstreamBY JOHN SCHAFFNER

When life hands you a lemon, squeeze it and make lemonade! That is kind of the situation the members and officers of Bay Point Yacht Club found themselves in late last summer when the property owners of the Bay Point development made the de-cision that they needed the space that had been used for a small clubhouse since the

club began in 1969. So the officers and members put their

heads together and they located a home for sale on East Bayshore Rd. about a quar-ter mile east of the Bay Point entrance and pulled the trigger on the purchase of that house and the over two acres of land it sits on, including about 100 feet of frontage on

The Flag Officers of Bay Point Yacht Club proudly stand in front of their new clubhouse. (L-R): Rear Commodore Jim Kollmann, Commodore Mike Penney and Vice Commodore Ray Ditmar.

Sandusky Bay. Now, the organization

that only allowed Bay Point boaters, property owners and beach pass holders to be members of their club, has a whole new business plan. Bay Point Yacht Club is now available for mem-bership to anybody from anywhere. They have big plans for their new 1,650 square foot facility that is in the process of being renovated for the new pur-pose. The officers empha-sized that BPYC is also a member of the Inter-Lake Yachting Association that carries with it reciprocal privileges to its members from the over 160 member yacht clubs from Buffalo to Lake St. Clair.

Past Commodore Tom Petty (not the rock star) served as spokesman for the group, along with their flag officers: Commodore Mike Penny, Vice Com-modore Ray Ditmar and Rear Commodore Jim Koll-mann (1978 PCHS gradu-ate). In addition to dealing with the new facility, they are also working on estab-lishing activities for their members that now totals 45 families (90 members as both spouses are vot-ing members). They have a couple of special Cruises set, the first of which is a June 18 cruse to Cleveland and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. They are also plan-ning monthly parties at their new facility.

Petty emphasized the club’s long-standing sup-port of the boating com-munity, noting they have offered boating classes, in-cluding their WOW (Wom-en on the Water) program, as well as safety training along with CPR classes. In addition, they have do-nated thousands of dollars to the Marblehead safety forces and local charities. Petty also noted that they have a family friendly en-vironment. They have lots of deck space that over-looks the Bay and Cedar Point, and they have in-vested in grills and pic-nic tables to support that family environment. They will also be holding Friday Night Potlucks at the new facility to get the social side of activities going there. All members will get a key to the new clubhouse.

In addition to the Friday night Potluck, there will be a special “Blessing of the Fleet” on Memorial Day starting at 9 a.m. with an open house to follow. All members and interested prospective members are invited.

For more information, email [email protected], or look them up online at bpyc.org. Vice Commodore Ray Ditmar is Membership Chair, and can be reached at 330-289-7106.

Each year Port Clinton High School’s commencement ceremony takes place at True-Lay Stadium, providing a beautiful setting for this special ceremony. With the renovation of the stadium and new Bassett Field, the Port Clinton High School graduation had to relocate to another venue. The Class of 2015 will have the distinction of being the first, and quite possibly the only, PCHS Class to gradu-ate outside on the PCHS property. Commencement will take place May 30, at 10:30 a.m. outside of PCHS on the soccer field off Fulton Street.

Mr. Gary Steyer, Principal, stated “We are taking great care insuring that our ceremony this year at the high school will be the same special ritual we expect it to be every year. Plans and preparations for the special day began last fall including renting portable bleachers to accommodate the large crowd that always gathers on this special day.”

Parking for the ceremony will be available at the high school as follows: Graduating Seniors – Performing Arts Center Lot behind PCHS; Handicap Parking and Emer-gency Vehicles – Tennis court lots off of Fulton Street, ve-hicles in this lot must arrive prior to 10:25 a.m. and must stay until the ceremony concludes; Parents, Guests, Gen-eral Public - On all PCHS parking lots except the tennis court lot, Parking is available on 10th Street and Jefferson Street. Please do not park at Magruder Hospital or on Ful-ton Street from 7th Street to 10th Street (This area will be closed during the Commencement ceremony (10:30-11:30) to all general traffic except emergency vehicles and resi-dents in that area). PCHS staff also reminds guests there is no parking on any grass area on school property and requests, out of respect for community members who live around PCHS, to please be sure not to park in front of driveways or on any personal property.

In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will take place at 10:30 a.m. in the PCHS gymnasium and tickets will be required as seating is limited. Any change in venue will be listed on the school district website, pccsd.net, Face-book.com/portclintonschools or Twitter @We_Are_PC.

Port Clinton City School District Treasurer testifies for school funding

Port Clinton City Schools Treasurer Jeff Dornbusch testified before the Ohio Senate Finance Education Sub-committee in Columbus. The governor’s new budget bill as presented would redistribute 1.1 million dollars away from Port Clinton School District mostly from a reduc-tion in tangible personal property tax reimbursement. Mr. Dornbusch had asked to be put on the list of people to testify before the subcommittee.

“It is important for our elected representatives to know who we are and why we believe it is unfair continue to try and reduce our share of state funding.” Dornbusch, along with Superintendent Mr. Pat Adkins have already met with Senator Randy Gardner and Representative Steve Kraus to share their concerns for the governor’s new funding proposal.

To see Dornbusch’s full testimony visit thebeacon.net.

Some Port Clinton High School students got to see the interworking of their City government on Tuesday, May 12. Not only did the students sit in, and conduct, a City Council meeting, but they followed around members of the administration and did job shadowing.

STREET CLOSURE FOR GRANDE PARADE

Main Street Port Clinton will host the Walleye Festival Grande Parade present-ed by Civilian Marksmanship Program on Saturday, May 23, at 1 p.m. Judging and announcements will be located in front of the Ida Rupp Public Library on Madison Street.

The staging for the Grande Parade is at

the Port Clinton High School. New this year, the route begins at the intersec-tion of Madison and 4th Street. North on Madison. East on Perry Street. South on Jefferson Street back to the High School. Judging and announcements will be made in front of the Ida Rupp Public Library.

To accommodate this event, the 100

block of East Perry Street will be closed no longer than one hour for the parade with the detours being set up at:

• Perry Street at Fulton Street for the east to Wilcox Road

• Perry Street at Monroe Street for the west to Fremont Road

Main Street Port Clinton and the City

of Port Clinton encourage businesses to notify customers and clients regarding the street closure.
