Normally on a Saturday, the halls of TTUHSC are so quiet you can hear a pin drop, but that wasn’t case on May 14.

Dozens of people were on hand to greet U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Houston) who flew into Amarillo to meet with TTUHSC leadership.

During her visit, Hutchison was briefed on the schools of Pharmacy, Allied Health Sciences and Medicine. She also learned more about SimCentral, the West Texas Influenza Center and the Laura W. Bush Institute for Women’s Health.

Following the informational meeting in the Dean’s Conference Room, Hutchison hosted a press conference in the main lobby.

Hutchison explained to members of the media why TTUHSC is so important not only to the Panhandle region, but to the State of Texas. She then took questions from reporters.

Although her visit only lasted an hour, Hutchi-son left the Amarillo campus with a wealth of knowledge concerning our growing institu-tion.

TTUHSC is honored to have hosted Hutchison during her visit, and hope she will return soon.

Hometown:Born in Dallas, raised in Amarillo

Department:Dean’s Office - School of Pharmacy

Job Title:Communications Coordinator

Years at TTUHSC:8 ½ years

Favorite thing about your job:I get the opportunity to meet a handful of students in each class. I really enjoy getting to know them a little bit and helping them whenever I can.

Favorite thing about TTUHSC:For the most part, people here are willing to step in and help each other. I’ve met some really good people over the years.

Your family:Debra and I have two kids. Our daughter, Rachael, has given us two rowdy, fun and loving grandsons: John Paul (6) and Preston (4). Our son, Joey, is a student at UT.

Hobbies:Playing softball and watching sports on TV and in person, especially baseball and football. I also like cooking for my family and getting mauled by my grandsons.

Place you would like to visit:I’d be happy just traveling around the U.S. with my wife in a tricked out RV and seeing all the sights there are to see as we visit every major league ballpark.

Something few people know:I don’t know how interesting it is, but after high school I worked as a machinist for about six years before I decided to give college a try.
