Surrounded by tradition, the story tells that the years began to be represented by animals during the Qing dynasty (that lasted from 1644 to 1911). According to the tale, Buddha would have invited the whole animal kingdom to a feast, but only a few animals showed up. They were, by order of arrival: mouse, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, ram, monkey, rooster, dog and wild boar.
At the occasion, the older ones often present young people with red envelopes (the so-called Hongbao) with a sort of "lucky money". If you receive, keep an eye on good etiquette: do not open the envelope in front of who gave it to you!
