Dear Immanuel families

I hope all of you had a wonderful Easter. Easter is the story of the greatest rescue mission ever, where God comes to earth in the form of Jesus Christ to rescue all of humanity. Jesus didn’t just come to get us into heaven. He came to rescue us from all the different areas of our life, the things in our life that we cannot change. Probably the most dramatic and certainly the most expensive rescue that happened was on August, 2010 in Chile when a mine collapsed on thirty-three miners. These miners were two thousand feet below the surface, trapped for sixty-nine days. The first seventeen days there was no communication. Nobody knew if they were alive or dead. It was an amazing story as the entire world watched a very expensive rescue that involved multiple nations – NASA was in-volved in it – to find and set free these men.

That was the story of the physical rescue. But the untold story that most of the world never heard was the spiritual rescue that took place of those men down there in that mine for sixty-nine days, because there was one man in those thirty-three miners who was a Christian. His name was Jose Enriquez. Jose had been a miner for over thirty years. While God had allowed him to be in that situation there was a transforming moment among those men during that sixty-nine days that set them free not just physically, but also spiritually.

The explosion surprised them in the middle of their work. It blasted them with an expansive wave that left them deaf and with a dust cloud that lasted three or four hours at the bottom of the mine. Their first concern was to see that everyone was alive and they saw God’s blessing that all thirty-three were alive. Once they realized that they were all alive they were able to come together and decide to become a community of survival where everyone counted.

They had to organize themselves. They started handing out different jobs. They gave Jose the privileged job of leading them in prayer. He led them in prayer. Then Jose told them the way to pray to the living God is to humble themselves. They got down on their knees and their faces and hum-bled themselves before God because God loves those who humble themselves. God began to change their hearts. In that humble attitude they touched God’s heart that way, and they began to know God’s presence among them.

Everyday they began to pray at twelve o’clock. They had a central prayer meeting where every-one could express themselves. There they began to feel the presence of the Holy Spirit, Miner Thirty-four they called him. There were no longer thirty-three. There were thirty-four. This thirty-fourth miner would strengthen them every day and give them hope. They had a whole worship service going every day for those seventeen days. They would sing and Jose would preach God’s Word from memory. They knew God’s presence every day, doing miracles among them, and healing people.

From the desk of Pastor Jonathan Lee (continued)

God had already spoken to Jose and showed him they were going to get out of the mine. Jose knew it was going to happen. God’s people are the people who exist by God’s Word. So their trust was fully in the Lord. However when that first drill missed them, it was the darkest day of their lives, because they felt that their prayers were not being answered. Their prayer meeting lost a few mem-bers that day. They decided to carry on – persevere in prayer and never give up. They were looking for a second drill to come down. It started to come down. Then the great miracle happened. Even the scientists will say it was a rock at just the right height that went at exactly the right angle to break in a chamber just ten meters off where the men were. That’s how the miracle occurred. The men went wild and just had a great dance. Happiness. They hugged the drill and wanted to go back up with the drill!

What a wonderful testimony this is! Jesus said, “I am the way, I am the truth, I am the life. No one comes to the Father if it weren’t through me.” That Jesus Christ who was in the midst of miners and who called them to testify to his truth, he is the true God. The God of love and mercy. He doesn’t make any difference between people. He’s just waiting for you to open the door of your heart. He comes to us and wants to help us. When we humble ourselves, God wants us to know his rescue of us. He wants us to humble ourselves. The King of kings and the Lord of lords can become our rescuer. He who has power to give life and take it away before the God of love, the God of mercy, who can hear prayer. He loves to answer our prayers. Let Jesus become our rescuer. He is the best thing that God has ever offered to mankind.

In peace,

Pastor Jonathan Lee
