Thanks to your support, we have reached our goal for the
2008-09 school year! Keep saving the General Mills
box tops for education labels throughout the summer so
we can get off to a strong start in the fall. All cereal, fruit
snacks, fruit roll-ups, Gushers, and Yoplait kids packs
from General Mills can be used. There are over 20 new
Box Tops products, too. Check out the complete list at

know that something you would throw out anyway can
make a difference.
We’re happy to announce that North Madison
Elementary is now participating in the Upromise
Schools Program.
Upromise is a nationally-recognized FREE service
that’s helped millions of members pay for college just by doing all
the things they do anyway. Membership is FREE. As a Upromise
member, you can earn rewards for shopping online, buying
participating grocery and drugstore items, eating out at 8,000
national and local restaurants, and more. Upromise partners,
including well-known companies like Citi, McDonald’s,
LandsEnd.com, Bloomingdale’s.com, and hundreds more, reward
members with 1-25% college savings.
In addition to saving for college, you can also raise money for our
school. For example, our school can earn up to $30 in bonuses
whenever you and your family and friends participate in select
Upromise activities for the first time. This money is over and above
the college savings going to your account.
Here’s how to help the school:
If you’re already a Upromise member, simply log in and link
your account to our school
If you’re not a member, you can join FREE at
www.upromise.com/schools
For more information on how you can save for college and raise

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS FOR PARENTS As the new year begins, have you considered making some New
Year’s resolutions to help your children become better learners? The
following are some you might consider:
1. I will praise my child for at least one success daily.
2. I will read to my child for fun each day. 3. I will listen to my child read for fun each day. 4. I will also help my child find another listener to read
to—a sibling, a grandparent, or a friend. 5. If I have a young child, I will write down stories,
poems, and sayings my child creates. If my child is older, I will set aside time for him/her to write for fun. I will write, too, and then we will read together what we have written.
6. I will talk with my child daily about his/her school experiences. I will find out what was especially enjoyable or successful.
7. I will arrange for my child to use the library regularly, and I will allow my child to choose his/her own books to read.
8. I will help my child pursue a special interest, and I will help him/her find books to read on that topic.
9. I will allow my child to buy books and educational games, and I will also encourage others to select such items as gifts for my child.
10. I will set aside a special place for my child to keep her/her collection of books.
11. I will help my child start a word collection of at least one new word each day, and I will start a similar collection myself.
12. I will be a model for reading, showing my child that reading is an important part of my own life.
If you follow these 12 simple tips in the year ahead, you will be well on the way to helping your child with learning. *Condensed from Mary Mastain
