    THOUGHTS WRITTEN ABOUT PRAYER

    Men and women are at their noblest and best when they are ontheir knees before God in prayer. I doubt if anybody has everbecome at all Christ-like, who has not been diligent in prayer;

In prayer we express our dependence on God in every area of ourhuman life. Material (daily bread), spiritual (forgiveness of sins) and

moral (deliverance from evil) as it is in the Lords prayer. The purpose of prayer is emphatically not to bend Gods will to

ours, but rather to align our will to his will. 1 John 5:14; Matt 6:10

It is by prayer that we seek Gods will embrace it and align ourselveswith it. To pray is to change.

Obedience is the indispensable condition, not the mysterious causeof answered prayer.

Prayer is to the spirit what oxygen is to the body.

    Whyand How

    Do I Pray?What is Prayer?

With God - Prayer is communion or communication withGod in worship. not for the benefit of othersWhen you pray, go into your room, close the door, and pray

to your Father who is unseen Matthew 66

Communication - Is a two directional communicationbetween man and God. John 2:5 (His mother said to theservants, Whatever He says to you, do it.). not just a ritual

Do not keep on babbling like pagans Matthew 6 7

Relational - the act of prayer develops our relationshipYour Father, who sees what is done in secret, will rewardyou Matthew 6 6

Two-way - receiving as well as transmitting

    Two-way, relational communication with God

Prayer involves the Father, Jesus and the Holy Spirit of God

    Whyand How

    Do I Pray?What is Prayer?

Christian Prayer is prayer through the Son

through (Jesus) we have accessto theFather by one Spirit Ephesians 2 18

Jesus said the Father would give whatever you

ask in my name John 15 16

We have no rightin ourselves to come to God,but can do so through Jesus and in his name

This is why prayersoften endwith throughJesus Christ our Lord or in the name ofJesus

    Whyand How

    Do I Pray?What is Prayer?

Christian Prayer is prayer by one Spirit

the Spirit helpsus in our weakness. We do not knowwhat we ought to

pray, but the Spirit himself intercedesfor us with groans that words cannotexpress. Romans 8 26

Why We Should PrayThe Old Testament shows us that men only accomplished Gods work in their

    lives when they prayed.

Scripture Men prayed in His will & accomplished much

Exodus 5:22-23 Moses prayed for the Israelites when the straw was notavailable

1 Chronicles 4: 9-10 Jabez prayed for himself for Gods blessing

Why We Should PrayWe also pray in obedience to Jesus instruction and in following His examples.

He always had unbroken communication with the Father.

Scripture Men prayed in His will &

    accomplished much

Luke 3: 21 Now when all the people were baptized, and

when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the

    heavens were opened,

He began his ministry by praying

Mark 1: 35 Very early in the morning, while it was still

dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary

    place, where he prayed.

He prayed in solitude before dawn

Luke 5: 16 But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and

    prayed

    He interposed periods of ministry

    with prayer

Matthew 26: 36-44Then Jesus went with his disciples to a

place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, Sit here

while I go over there and pray.

He prayed before going to the

    Cross

    Why We Should Pray

John 17 Jesus Prays to Be Glorified, Jesus Prays for His

Disciples, Jesus Prays for All Believers

Hebrews 7: 24-25But because Jesus lives forever, he has a

permanent priesthood. 25 Therefore he is able to save

completely those who come to God through him, because

he always lives to intercede for them.

He now intercedes for his people

    as High Priest

Luke 11:1-4 One day Jesus was praying in a certain place.

When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, Lord,

teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples. 2 He

said to them, When you pray, say:

Taught His disciples how to pray

Luke 18:1-8 The Parable of the Persistent Widow

Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that

they should always pray and not give up.

    Taught about persistence in prayer

Why We Should PrayThe early Church kept the precedent set by Christ & the Old Testament saints. They

accomplished lots for Gods Kingdom and in their personal lives as a result of prayer. We too must pray.

Acts 2:42 They devoted themselves to the breaking of bread and

    prayer

Acts 12:5-11 Church prayed for Peter and God delivered him out of

    prison

    Apostle Paul

Acts 9:11 Paul acquired the custom of praying immediately after

conversionRomans 15: 30-32 Requested for prayer from saints for his protection and

    ministry

Ephesians 1:15-16 Prayed for saints constantly for their growth

Philippians 1:3-4 Prayed for saints according to their needs
