as the new school year forstudents began Tuesday.
Among instructionalstaff, Mitzi Varda (18 yearsexperience), Sarah Igonin(nine years), Mary BethDeVries (six years) and
Heather Thomson termi-nated their employmentwith the school district, forreasons ranging from per-sonal to other employment.

Morning arrived early onTuesday as thousands of studentsreturned to their schools in theVan Buren Public Schools district.Alarm clocks sounded the back-to-reality knell acrossthe Belleville area asthe day dawned warm(74 degrees), foggy(not as thick as peasoup), and humid (87percent relative humidity).
As early as 6:50 a.m., the trafficlight at Owen and South Streetsshowed green, yellow and red sig-nals leading to Owen IntermediateSchool (formerly South MiddleSchool), instead of the flashing
yellow motorists had grown accus-
tomed to during the summer.At 6:51 a.m., a bright yellowschool bus had stopped at therailroad tracks leading north totown as part of its regular safetyprocedure, and as early as 6:53 a.m.a young girl was waiting for her
bus on West ColumbiaAve., in front of the Tuscan ManorApartments.
The high schooland the intermediate
and middle schools began officiallyat 7:40 a.m., but many high schoolteachers and administrators wereat the new high school by at least7 a.m.

Tara K. McCann, youth andteen services librarian forthe Belleville Area DistrictLibrary, loves super heroes.
Shes dressed as Batgirl atcomic book conventions, hasher own comic book in theworks and craves the heroarchetype in many of thebooks she reads.
McCann, it turns out, is abit of a hero in her commu-nity. She doesnt put on a capeand she doesnt swing fromrooftops she advocatesempowering Bellevilles youthfrom the Fred C. FischerLibrary.
Since stepping into her cur-rent role in 2007, McCann hastripled the teen section in thelibrary, introduced many newyouth learning activities andhas grown popularity in allof them. She has 25 copies of The Hunger Games books;five of which are signed bythe author, Suzanne Collins.
