The Benefits Of Using My IELTS Essay Template
Thank you for your interest in my IELTS Writing Templates. I’ve included 1
Essay template from the 7 that I give to my students. In my IELTS classes, I
teach students the 7 different types of IELTS Essay questions that they may
encounter. And for each of the 7 types, I give them an essay template to help
them in the writing of their IELTS essay.
The purpose of the template is twofold. Firstly, it provides a framework
(organization) for how the essay for that type of question should be written.
Secondly, it provides some phrases that you can use in your essay. These
memorisable phrases will help in various ways: it will ensure you don’t make as
many grammatical mistakes, it will help you score in the grammar
complexity of your sentences, it will enable you to use some good vocabulary
and through following these templates you will also use cohesive devices in the
proper places and finish writing your essay faster!
All in all, you will be able to score higher for your IELTS essay as it helps you
improve in all 4 of the Writing Criteria: Task Response, Coherence & Cohesion,
Lexical Resource and Grammatical Range & Accuracy.
However, please don’t get me wrong. While using my Essay Templates will
help you do better in your essay, that doesn’t mean you will automatically get
the score you desire! But using them definitely helps!
For example, one of my former students wrote this:
Eileen got a 6.5 before
attending my Writing
classes but got 7.0
after and she credits
her success to using
the IELTS templates
she got in my classes.
Here’s the essay template for the Advantages and Disadvantages (Expository)
essay. Read below and I’ll tell you how to use it and also how to create your
own templates to help you prepare for your IELTS exam!
The Advantages & Disadvantages (Expository) Essay Template
As you can see from the above, the essay template gives the exact structure and
organization for this type of essay. You can use a "4-paragraph" essay structure.
Other essay types may require a "5-paragraph" essay structure.
It is clear through the template above how to structure this type of essay. For
example, the student will be able to know what to write in the first or second
sentence of the introduction paragraph. (The first sentence would use another
template I give to my students called the Introduction Template) Furthermore,
he or she knows what to write in the first or second sentence of the body
paragraphs. Everything is laid out nicely and it is very organised.
Beyond helping the student with the organisation of the essay, the template also
helps students with certain phrases. For instance, whatever IELTS question
comes up, as long as it is of the "advantages and disadvantages" type of essay
question (1 of the 7 different types), the student would be able to start the
second sentence of the introduction with:
"While this offers a few advantages, there are also some disadvantages
which are worth considering."
Also, the student could use the following template phrase when starting the
second Paragraph which addresses the advantages:
"There are two main benefits to this development."
I will not go through everything here, but the point is that when you use good
essay templates, you would be able understand the organisation needed for
various question types and you would also be able to use certain good phrases
over and over again that would fit that particular essay type.
Not only does this save time, but it also ensures that the phrases that you use are
grammatically correct. For a student targeting IELTS Band 7.0, very often they
will make a number of grammar mistakes. However, if you use a good essay
template, you can minimise the number of grammar mistakes made as the
phrases in the essay template (if it's a good one!) are 100% grammatically
correct.
Creating Your Own Essay Templates
I have spent 5 years creating my essay templates for my students, and I keep on
editing them and refining them to make them better all the time.
While I may not be able to give you all my 7 IELTS Essay templates, I’ve given
you one and I’ll tell you how to create your own. Here are my recommended
steps to creating your own Essay Templates. This is what I’ve done over the
years and if you go through this process yourself, you will definitely learn a lot
and be much more prepared to face any IELTS essay question:
1. You first need to be familiar with all the 7 different types of IELTS
essays that come up. Go through all the official IELTS test papers – there
are over 50 of them that you can find. Make sure they are “official”
IELTS papers and not just any you find online. Be familiar with all the
Writing Task 2 Essay questions. Categorize them into different types.
2. Think about the organization for each IELTS essay type. Should you use a
4-paragraph or 5-paragraph essay structure? Why? Decide what sort of
content will go into each paragraph. How would you answer all the
questions in that essay type?
3. Create really specific essay templates. The more specific you create, the
more helpful it can be. Think of phrases you can use over and over again
in each part as long as the essay question is of that certain type.
If you are lost, you can use the model I've given you above. Trust me, you will
learn tons by creating your own Essay Templates! This was initially what I
wanted my students to do as I know by doing this, they will gain a lot for
themselves. Eventually, I had to do it for them because a lot of my students
don’t have the time and want to be spoon-fed! But if you have the time, use the
above process and you will gain a lot!
However, if you are someone who is struggling with using good English, or if
you do not have so much time to experiment with creating your own templates,
