Day 1: ITC Maratha A Luxury Collection Hotel Mumbai, Mumbai (Mon, 30 November)

MumbaiThe thriving metropolis of Mumbai is a go-to destination for travellers curious to experience a modern Indian city. Lapped by the Arabian Sea, this urban seaside peninsula is a melting pot of old and new India. Towering office blocks and shiny apartment buildings shoulder crumbling grand dames of architecture. Men play cricket in the leafy central parks, taxis navigate the jam packed streets and families stroll along the seaside promenades of Mumbai, while kilometres away children beg on the peripheries of Asia’s biggest slum. In the wide avenue of Colaba’s high street, western culture overshadows the brightly lit storefronts, where Levi’s, Adidas and McDonalds vie for retail space.

Day NotesWelcome to Mumbai. After you land at the airport, we escort you to your Hotel and our representative will help you to check-in to the hotel. We begin your Best of the West India tour with a city tour of Mumbai. we visit Gateway Of India. This bold basalt arch of colonial triumph faces out to Mumbai Harbour from the tip of Apollo Bunder. Incorporating Islamic styles of 16th-century Gujarat, it was built to commemorate the 1911 royal visit of King George V, but wasn’t completed until 1924. Ironically, the British builders of the gateway used it just 24 years later to parade the last British regiment as India marched towards independence. These days, the gateway is a favourite gathering spot for locals and a top place for people-watching. Giant-balloon sellers, photographers, vendors making bhelpuri and touts rub shoulders with locals and tourists, creating all the hubbub of a bazaar.

The Chhatrapatī Shivaji Mahārāj Vastu Saṅgrahālay formerly Prince of Wales Museum of Western India, is the main museum in Mumbai, Maharashtra It was founded in the early years of the 20th century by prominent citizens of Bombay, with the help of the government, to commemorate the visit of the then prince of Wales.

The evening is at your own leisure.

Gateway of IndiaThis incredible monument is situated between the Colaba district and the Arabian Sea. The greatness of the British Raj was expressed through the Gateway of India in a particular moment in the history of this country. The 26 m height arch is what constitutes the structural design of this amazing monument. However, the main components of the Gateway of India are the four turrets, which were specially designed in a very attractive and complicated manner.

The Elephanta Caves (natively known as Gharapurichi Leni) are a network of sculpted caves located on Elephanta Island, or Gharapuri (literally "the city of caves") in Mumbai Harbour, 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) to the east of the city of Mumbai in the Indian state of Maharashtra. The island, located on an arm of the Arabian Sea, consists of two groups of caves—the first is a large group of five Hindu caves, the second, a smaller group of two Buddhist caves. The Hindu caves contain rock cut stone sculptures, representing the Shaiva Hindu sect, dedicated to the Lord Shiva.

The rock cut architecture of the caves has been dated to between the 5th and 8th centuries, although the identity of the original builders is still a subject of debate. The caves are hewn from solid basalt rock. All the caves were also originally painted in the past, but now only traces remain.

In the evening we take you on a stroll at the famous marine Drive. Marine Drive is a 4.3-kilometre-long boulevard in South Mumbai in the city of Mumbai. It is a 'C'-shaped six-lane concrete road along the coast, which is a natural bay. The road links Nariman Point to Babulnath and Malabar Hill. Marine Drive is situated over reclaimed land facing west-south-west. A promenade lies parallel to this road. Marine Drive is also known as the Queen's Necklace because, if viewed at night from an elevated point anywhere along the drive, the street lights resemble a string of pearls in a necklace

Elephanta IslandAlso known as ‘the place of caves’, Elephanta Island is exceptional for its ancient cave temples, which were carved out of solid stone between the 5th and 6th centuries AD. Seven of these grotto shrines are dotted across the 16-square-kilometre island and contain magnificent rock sculptures and relief frescoes relating to various aspects of Hindu mythology and religion. The island was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, and in considered one of the most important and exquisite examples of stone-cut architecture in India.

Elephanta Island CavesElephanta Caves is UNESCO World Heritage site is a fine specimen of rock cut architecture and art of medieval India. To state the trivial, there are no elephants in Elephanta! The name was given by the Portuguese as there was a large elephant sculpture in the island, when it was held by them. Otherwise this island was known as Gharapuri. The island is known for the 7th century caves with boldly executed mythical themes.

In the evening we take you the market of Ingo. Once upon a not so long time ago, a German named Ingo set up this new market on a leased property. Fondly known as Ingo’s Saturday Night Bazaar, this market in Arpora is on for about six months of winter and presents a potpourri of junk jewellery, imported T-shirts, hippie merchandise, Indian and global cuisine from Rajasthan and Kashmir to Turkey, Spain and the rest of Europe! For non-shoppers, Daniel’s Bar often sees a DJ playing there, for the market. Even without this, music plays throughout the day and gets groovier by the night, say around 11 pm.
