A year to be proud of

This racing season has again highlighted the

strength of the Widden sires and sale graduates

from the historic Valley of Champions.

Superstar filly and Widden graduate SUNLIGHT

amassed a cache of Group 1 sprints with

memorable wins in the Newmarket, Coolmore

and William Reid.

Her sire Zoustar, the reigning champion first

season sire, produced the first three home in the

Gr.1 Coolmore Stud Stakes and is the current

Champion Australian 3YO sire – an incredible

achievement from just his first crop.

As my father and grandfather would say, ‘stand

the best by the best’. In that vein I am delighted

to announce the Champion Australian 3YO of

his generation TRAPEZE ARTIST and Champion

Australian 2YO colt WRITTEN BY have retired

to Widden this season, reinforcing our focus on

what has served us so well – pure Australian

speed! They’re the best of their generations –

prodigiously gifted racehorses with the right

profiles to make the transition from champion

racehorse to champion sire.

Trapeze Artist is a phenomenal sprinter. By

champion sire Snitzel, he earned in excess

of $5.5m. His Group 1 wins include a race

record in the $2.5m WFA T.J. Smith Stakes Gr.1

(1200m), a Randwick track record in the $1m

WFA All Aged Stakes Gr.1 (1400m) and another

Randwick track record in the $500k WFA

Canterbury Stakes Gr.1 (1300m). He also won

the $1m Golden Rose Gr.1 (1400m) by almost

five lengths.

In 2018 Trapeze Artist became the Longines’

World’s Highest Rated Sprinter. He is without

question one of the most decorated and best

credentialed horses to retire to stud in years.

Written By is everything the Widden brand has

built itself on. He is the Timeform Champion

2YO and returned a higher rating than the likes

of Estijaab, The Autumn Sun and Sunlight. He

won his first four starts, highlighted by a breath-

taking win in the Gr.1 Blue Diamond Stakes

(1200m) at Caulfield.

Written By is by leading 2YO sire Written Tycoon

and is simply an awesome individual physically

Strong and imposing, with a pedigree that is

completely free of Danehill, he’ll be appealing

to mares of this sireline.

The success of the Widden stallions has been

unrivalled in recent years with the number of

champion first or second season sires that we

have launched, namely Sebring, Northern Meteor

Stratum, Nicconi, Star Witness and Zoustar.

Australian Group 1 speed and precocity are

the dominant pre-requisites in the making of

a champion stallion, as evident in the most

successful and commercial stallions we have

in Australia. I believe the 2019 Widden stallion

roster is a strong reflection of these principles.

Your success is our success. I thank you for your

ongoing support and wish you all the best with

your endeavours in 2019.

valley of champions

The oldest family owned and run thoroughbred

stud in the world, Widden Stud is unique in every

way and, after more than 150 years in operation

remains at the very forefront of the Australian

bloodstock industry.

Located in the south western corner of the

Hunter Valley, Widden extends across 8,000

acres of spectacular horse country in the Widden

Valley, bordered by the renowned Wollemi World

Heritage National Park.

Widden Stud truly is horse heaven.

The crystal waters of Widden Creek flow through

idyllic expanses of emerald pasture sheltered by

towering majestic sandstone cliffs that capture

every nuance of sunlight from dawn to dusk.

Pristine and tranquil, this unique environment

has been nurtured by the Thompson family as a

sanctuary for thoroughbreds since the 1870’s.

In Pursuit of Perfection

The modern day Widden Stud is a centre of

thoroughbred excellence, producing a steady

stream of Group 1 winners and champions

such as outstanding filly Sunlight, a first

crop daughter of our champion young

stallion Zoustar.

Bred by Widden in partnership, Sunlight

was sold in the Widden draft at the 2017

Magic Millions Yearling Sale for $300,000

with Katie Thompson retaining a share in

her ownership.

Winner of the 2018 Magic Millions 2YO

Classic and placed in the Golden Slipper

Sunlight has been dazzling at three, racking

up a treble of Group 1 victories in the VRC

Newmarket Handicap, Coolmore Stud

Stakes and MVRC William Reid Stakes.

The undisputed best 3YO sprinter in the

country, Sunlight has earnings topping

$4.3m and lays claim to being the best filly

ever bred in the Widden Valley.

The burgeoning widespread success of her

sire Zoustar is a testament to our stringent

policies on stallion selection, while the

depth of talent on our roster is reflected

in our outstanding yearling sale results

in 2019.

Widden Stud has sold close to $18m worth

of yearlings this year at Magic Millions

Inglis Easter and Inglis Classic. Our drafts

have featured a strong representation from

our elite Group 1 sires Zoustar, Star

Witness, Nicconi and, of course, the late

Sebring.

Moving forward, we are excited to be

launching the stud careers of two exceptional

new Group 1 winners in Trapeze Artist and

Written By – a scenario that has worked

spectacularly well for us in the past with

Sebring and Northern Meteor – both retiring

to Widden in 2009.

Can lightning strike twice … we believe so!

We at Segenhoe have enjoyed a wonderful

relationship with Widden over the years and

have had not only success in the ring with

Widden stallions but, more importantly, on

the track.

Antony and Katie have assembled a terrific team

around them and our annual high 90% conception

rate with Widden stallions exemplifies how

efficient the team is and everything is handled in

a professional and calm manner (unlike myself!)

They are a credit to the legacy of the Thompson

family and we look forward to many years of

success with our association with this great farm

Peter O’Brien, Segenhoe Stud, NSW

My first dealing with Widden was in 1989 when

we prepared a Tolomeo colt and they sold him

for us. The colt made $280,000 and it was a life

changing result. Widden then offered me a job

and from the day I started, there will always be

Widden blood in my veins.

30 years later and we now have all our mares

board during the season and have been involved

in many of their stallions, including Sebring

Star Witness, Nicconi, Stratum and, their most

recent acquisition, Written By.

There are always issues with bloodstock but

when you are dealing with good, honest people

who are at Widden then the business is easy.

David Toole, Kambula Stud, SA

I find when dealing with Widden they are very

efficient and we have an excellent strike rate

with their stallions. They make appropriate

decisions quickly and it is always easy booking

a mare into Widden. It is a wonderful stud

represented by wonderful people.

Verna Metcalfe, Middlebrook Valley Lodge, NSW

We particularly enjoy dealing with the team at

Widden. The sales staff, administrative support

right through to the team in the stallion barn are

all so generously accommodating. Little things

like providing care and hospitality for our truck

drivers and their rationale and common sense

approach when we are trying to get our mares

covered. It’s why we are proud to continue our

support of the Widden stallions.

Ged and Jan Nolan, Rosari, QLD

I have four or five clients who keep all their stock

at Widden and it’s been a pleasure for me dealing

with them over the years. The professionalism

of care, from foaling through to the sales ring

and back around again with the broodmares is

second to none.

Sheamus Mills, Sheamus Mills Bloodstock, VIC

Our association with Widden stretches back

almost two decades. From the start right through

to today we have been made welcome and

treated as part of the Widden family. Widden’s

record of standing commercially prominent sires

is quite remarkable and we have no hesitation

in supporting their stallions on offer.

Antony and Katie have put together a great team

who are easy and friendly to deal with in all

aspects of our industry.

Ron and Deb Gilbert, Highgrove Stud, QLD

Champion Widden sire Bletchingly has forged an undeniable influence in the pedigrees of many of our modern day Group 1 sprinters, particularly via the likes of Champion sires Redoute’s Choice and I Am Invincible.

Interestingly, Trapeze Artist shares a very similar Bletchingly duplication to that of up and coming sire Brazen Beau.”Antony Thompson

GRAFF EARNS HIGH PRAISERAY THOMAS, THE DAILY TELEGRAPH, 25/08/2018

“He’s the best colt I’ve had anything to do with – a really exciting horse.’’

This was trainer Kris Lees initial comment after talented Graff returned with a brilliant win in the Gr.3 $150,000 San Domenico Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday.

Lees, the champion Newcastle trainer, isn’t prone to hyperbole which makes his opinion of Graff even more noteworthy.

GEM SONG drives through to win a competitive Eskimo Prince Stakes Gr.3

GEM SONG SPARKLES FIRST-UP IN ESKIMO PRINCERACENET, 09/02/2019

Gem Song has put Sydney’s top 3YO’s on notice with a strong win in the Gr.3 Eskimo Prince Stakes (1200m).

The Kris Lees trained colt proved a class above his rivals, emerging on the inside of the home straight – which was deemed inferior going – to win comfortably.

A ROYAL RANDWICK BLITZPUNTERS, 29/12/2018

Your Song sprinter Mister Songman absolutely brained them third-up for Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott. Adam Hyeronimus made it a very easy watch for those that took the $1.60, as they did not get remotely close to rolling him. He’s shown himself to be a good horse in any case, but blinkers first time might have unlocked something else as well.

The official margin was 7L, and another good measure of the performance was that he stopped the clock in 1:20.55s – just 0.22s outside the track record set by Trapeze Artist when winning the Gr.1 All Aged Stakes earlier this year!
