If we look at life as opportunities for growth, the passage of time will not depress us. We won’t hide our grey hairs. We will embrace the experience that comes with age. The words Rosh Hashana literally mean “new year.” The rabbis say that “shana,” or year, also means repetition for the sake of clarifying or deepening. As the New Year is upon us, we make a commitment to better understand what it means to be a Jew. The more we learn about our Torah, the deeper our connection to who we are. This year, let us all commit to attending more classes and deepening our connection. The deeper the connection, the less we fear the passage of time. May this year be a good one for all. May it also be sweet, so we can taste the goodness. Shana Tova! Rabbi Shlomo Abramovich, Visiting Scholar One of the most interesting things about the High Holidays is the connection between opposing feelings, the fear and the joy coming together throughout these days. On the one hand, these are the “Days of Awe”, when all the universe is standing for a trail in front of G-d; but on the other hand, these are holidays and we are all happy, celebrating and singing our prayers at the synagogue. What the meaning of this happiness? What are celebrating? When a person has a trial, the only thing that matters is the verdict. But, when we talk about the trial of the High Holidays, the most important thing is the knowledge that G-d is judging us, which means that he cares about us, as a father checking on what is going on with his child, to see if he is doing well. A young child can be angry on his father and will be afraid from this examination. But, a smarter boy will understand that it shows his father’s love and concern about him, and his wish that he will succeed in his life. On the High Holidays we should be grateful for G-d’s interest in us, for our closeness to him. We should think how we can become better people and what we should improve in our life so we can become even closer to G-d. May all our prayers and wishes will be accepted, and we will have a good and happy new year. Shana Tova! Shanah Tovah Umetukah

Rabbi Shlomo Abramovich, Visiting Scholar One of the most interesting things about the High Holidays is the connection between opposing feelings, the fear and the joy coming together throughout these days. Recent Visitors at Beth Israel In September 9, Steve and Anita Dienstfrey visited Omaha, enjoying a tour of the synagogue. Steve’s father, Joseph, was president of Beth Israel when the synagogue on 52nd was built and opened. The Dienstfrey’s were delighted to see the pictures in the hallway, finding his father in a number of those displayed Steve is pictured here pointing to his father’s name on the building dedication plaque. They also at-tended Shabbat services the following day.

Also in September, a group of Bellevue West juniors and seniors, along with their teacher, Corina Cox, toured the synagogue. Rabbi Shlomo gave them an overview of Judaism and answered many, many questions. Ms. Cox reported it was a great experience and hopes to schedule a time here again next year.
