What is the Bible and how did we get?

Page 3: The Bible Gods Holy Word

INTRODUCTION

Page 4: The Bible Gods Holy Word

The New Testament Prophet John the Baptist was known as a ”voice

crying in the wilderness”as he proclaimed the Word

of God.

Page 5: The Bible Gods Holy Word

Many people today have become echoes of

spiritual truths they hear from those around them.

Page 6: The Bible Gods Holy Word

They are not a voice through which God can reveal His message, but

are only an echo of what they hear from others.

Page 7: The Bible Gods Holy Word

They are like the prophets of whom God said, ”steal my words every one from

his neighbor” (Jeremiah 23:30)

Page 8: The Bible Gods Holy Word

In order to speak God’s words

We must first know What God has said.

KEY VERSES

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

KEY VERSESThat the man of God

may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

(II Timothy 4:16-17)

Page 30: The Bible Gods Holy Word

The word ”Bible" means ”the books.” The Bible is one volume which consists of 66 separate books.

Page 31: The Bible Gods Holy Word

The word ”Scripture” is also used to refer to God’s Word. This word comes from a Latin word which means ”writing.”

Page 32: The Bible Gods Holy Word

When the word ”Scripture” is used with a capital ”S” it means the sacred

writings of the one true God.

Page 33: The Bible Gods Holy Word

ORIGIN OF THE BIBLE

Page 34: The Bible Gods Holy Word

The Bible is the written Word of God.

Page 35: The Bible Gods Holy Word

He inspired the words in the Bible and used approximately 40

different men to write down His words.

Page 36: The Bible Gods Holy Word

These men wrote over a period of 1500 years. The

perfect agreement of these writers is one proof that they were all guided

by a single author.

Page 37: The Bible Gods Holy Word

That author was God.

Page 38: The Bible Gods Holy Word

Some of the writers wrote down exactly

what God said:

Page 39: The Bible Gods Holy Word

Take thee a roll of a book, and write

therein all the words

Page 40: The Bible Gods Holy Word

that I have spoken unto thee against

Israel . . . (Jeremiah 36:2)

Page 41: The Bible Gods Holy Word

Other writers wrote what they experienced or what God revealed concerning the future:

Page 42: The Bible Gods Holy Word

Write the things which thou hast seen, and the things which are, and the things which

shall be hereafter. (Revelation 1:19)

Page 43: The Bible Gods Holy Word

All of the writers wrote under God’s

inspiration the words of His message for

us.

us.

THE PURPOSE OF THE BIBLE

Page 46: The Bible Gods Holy Word

THE PURPOSE OF THE BIBLE

The Bible itself records its main

purpose:

righteousness.

MAJOR DIVISIONS

Page 52: The Bible Gods Holy Word

MAJOR DIVISIONS

The Bible is divided into two major sections called

the Old Testament and the New Testament.

Page 53: The Bible Gods Holy Word

MAJOR DIVISIONS

The word ”testament” means

covenant. “A Covenant”

It is an agreement.

Page 54: The Bible Gods Holy Word

MAJOR DIVISIONS

The Old Testament records God’s original

covenant or agreement with man.

Page 55: The Bible Gods Holy Word

MAJOR DIVISIONS

The New Testament records the new

covenant made by God through His Son,

Jesus Christ.

Page 56: The Bible Gods Holy Word

MAJOR DIVISIONS

What was the subject of these two agreements?

Page 57: The Bible Gods Holy Word

MAJOR DIVISIONS

They both concerned restoring sinful man to right relationship with God. God made a law that sin can only

be forgiven through the shedding of blood:

Page 58: The Bible Gods Holy Word

MAJOR DIVISIONS

. . . without shedding of blood there is no

remission (forgiveness) for sin.

(Hebrews 9:22)

Page 59: The Bible Gods Holy Word

Under God’s agreement in the Old Testament, blood sacrifices of animals were

made by man to obtain forgiveness for sin.

Page 60: The Bible Gods Holy Word

This was a symbol of the blood sacrifice Jesus Christ would provide

under the new agreement with God.

Page 61: The Bible Gods Holy Word

Through the birth, life, death, and resurrection

of Jesus, a final sacrifice for sin was

made:

Page 62: The Bible Gods Holy Word

But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not

of this building;

Page 63: The Bible Gods Holy Word

Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by

His own blood he entered in once into the holy

place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

Page 64: The Bible Gods Holy Word

For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the

ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean,

sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh:

Page 65: The Bible Gods Holy Word

How much more shall the blood of Christ who through

the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from

dead works to serve theliving God?

Page 66: The Bible Gods Holy Word

And for this cause He is the mediator of the new

testament, that by means of death, for the redemption

the transgressions that were under the first testament,

Page 67: The Bible Gods Holy Word

they which are called might receive the promise of eternal

inheritance. (Hebrews 9:11-15)

Page 68: The Bible Gods Holy Word

Both testaments are the Word of God and we

must study both in order to understand God’s

message.

Page 69: The Bible Gods Holy Word

The terms ”old” and ”new” testaments are used to distinguish

between God’s agreement with man

Page 70: The Bible Gods Holy Word

before and after the death of Jesus Christ.

We do not disregard the Old Testament simply

because it is called ”old.”

Page 71: The Bible Gods Holy Word

FURTHER DIVISIONS

Page 72: The Bible Gods Holy Word

FURTHER DIVISIONS

The Bible is further divided into 66 books. The Old Testament has 39 books.

Page 73: The Bible Gods Holy Word

FURTHER DIVISIONS

Old Testament, known by the Jewish faith as the Tanakh. The Tanakh is

known as the Jewish Bible

it consists of 39 Books

Page 74: The Bible Gods Holy Word

FURTHER DIVISIONS

The Tanakh consists of 39 Books that is divided

into three sections

Page 75: The Bible Gods Holy Word

FURTHER DIVISIONS

These sections of the Tanakh are:The Pentateuch (first five) The Judges and Prophets (both major and minor)The Wisdom and Worship Writings (Writings of Solomon and the Psalms)

Page 76: The Bible Gods Holy Word

FURTHER DIVISIONS

The New Testament contains 27 books.

Page 77: The Bible Gods Holy Word

FURTHER DIVISIONS

Each book is divided into chapters and verses.

Page 78: The Bible Gods Holy Word

FURTHER DIVISIONS

Although the content of each book is the Word of God, the division into chapters and verses was made by man.

Page 79: The Bible Gods Holy Word

FURTHER DIVISIONS

to make it easy to locate specific passages.

Page 80: The Bible Gods Holy Word

FURTHER DIVISIONS

It would be very difficult to find a passage if the books were all one long paragraph.

Page 82: The Bible Gods Holy Word

UNITY OF THE BIBLE

Page 83: The Bible Gods Holy Word

UNITY OF THE BIBLE

When we speak of the unity of the Bible, we mean two things:

Page 84: The Bible Gods Holy Word

UNITY OF THE BIBLE

ONE: THE BIBLE IS UNITED IN CONTENT:

Page 85: The Bible Gods Holy Word

UNITY OF THE BIBLE

TWO: THE BIBLE IS UNITED IN

THEME:

Page 86: The Bible Gods Holy Word

UNITY OF THE BIBLE

Having made known unto us the mystery of His will,

according His good pleasure which He hath purposed in

Himself;

Page 87: The Bible Gods Holy Word

UNITY OF THE BIBLE

That in the dispensation of the fullness of times He might

gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on

earth; even in Him;

Page 88: The Bible Gods Holy Word

UNITY OF THE BIBLE

In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being

predestinated according to the purpose of Him who worketh all things after the counsel of

His own will. (Ephesians 1:9-11)

Page 89: The Bible Gods Holy Word

UNITY OF THE BIBLE

The Bible reveals the mystery of God’s plan which is the unifying

theme of the Bible. It is the revelation of Jesus Christ as the Savior of sinful mankind. Jesus

explained how the Old Testament centered on Him:

Page 90: The Bible Gods Holy Word

UNITY OF THE BIBLE

And He said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you while I was

yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled,

Page 91: The Bible Gods Holy Word

UNITY OF THE BIBLE

which were written in the law of Moses, and in the

prophets, and in the psalms concerning me.(Luke 24:44)
