her delight at the show, Alex Andrews, marketing development manager at FinningUK, said the company had picked up 1,000 leadson day one and even more on day two. ‘It wasa very good show,’ she commented. ‘Thefootflow on our stand on the middle day alonewas about what we had expected for all threedays! There were also a lot more internationalvisitors than we had anticipated.’

Alex added that a lot of interest had beenshown in the Cat 777G rigid dumptruck and the300-tonne 6030 excavator, with some visitorsqueuing for up to an hour and a half for achance to climb aboard the latter.

Another attention-grabbing exhibit on showwas specialist contractors AR Demolition’sVolvo EC700 high-reach demolition rig, whichhas been employed to carry out its first dutiesfor Aggregate Industries at Croft Quarry inLeicestershire. The 100-tonne, 40m highmachine complete with shear and grabattachments will be dismantling an on-site rail-loading facility comprising storage bins, feedhoppers and conveyors over a five-weekperiod.

Andrew Thompson, director of ARDemolition, said exhibiting at Hillhead providesbusinesses with an important platform to get

their products and services into the quarryingmarket. ‘Having worked for construction firmsfor a number of years, we recently decided tochange our business strategy and refocusmuch of our work with companies in thequarrying industry,’ he explained. ‘Hillheadgives us the perfect opportunity to promote oursite-clearance expertise and services to theaggregates sector, which is why we came to theshow, and the response since day one has beenexcellent with the potential to gain more workfrom new customers.’

Aside from business, Mr Thompson alsoshares the quarrying industry’s drive and firmstance on delivering health and safety bestpractice. ‘We always put safety first at ARDemolition, so I fully admire and endorse theindustry’s ongoing commitment and successin improving health and safety standards in theworkplace,’ he continued. ‘At the show wewanted to demonstrate our commitment tocontractor safety on our stand, and there issimply no better event to convey this messageto customers, whether new or old, thanHillhead.’

With contractor safety being a key industrypriority, Hillhead 2012, fittingly, saw the launchof the MPA’s ‘Safer by Partnership’ initiative for

members and their contractors to work moreclosely together to reduce contractor injuriesand the incidence of ill health, and ultimately, achieve the target of Zero Harm.

Nigel Jackson, chief executive of the MPA,commented: ‘Members need to be able todemonstrate contractors’ and sub-contractors’competence with the same degree of rigour asif the contractors were directly employed. It isin recognition of the key role that contractorsplay in the achievement of Zero Harm, that wehave developed and launched Safer byPartnership.’

Open for businessSunshine and mild temperatures continuedright through to the middle day of the event(Wednesday), and the general consensus by theend of the afternoon was that many exhibitorswere reporting lots of potential businessactivity on their stands, none more so thanSandvik Construction who had no fewer thaneight new items of equipment on display anddemonstration. These included: a QH331mobile cone crusher; QJ241 compact trackedjaw crusher; UJ440i jaw crusher unit; and WRscreening media.

Demonstrating their‘green’ credentials to new and existingcustomers, Total Bitumen showcased a widerange of asphalt products, including AzaltEco2, a paving-grade bitumen designed for theproduction of warm-mix asphalt concrete; andStyrelf, which has proven to be one of the bestperforming polymer modified binders in the

market following a long-term European study. ‘Once again we’ve had a very successful and

rewarding show,’ said John Tuite, salesmanager for Total Bitumen UK. ‘With thelubricants side of the business exhibiting, along with the promotion of our heavy fuel oilsegment, we have created a one-stop shopstand for visitors where we can discuss abroad range of energy issues on how Total canhelp meet their current/future businessneeds.’

Echoing Mr Tuite’s sentiments was DavidUdall, key account manager for the industriallubricants division at Total UK Ltd. ‘We’ve hadextremely positive feedback from prospectivecustomers, especially on our Concept TP Starlubricant oils – Star Max FE 10W-30 and StarMax Trans 80W-110 – both of which have beendesigned to help off-road vehicles improvefuel economy and reduce carbon emissions,’he commented.

‘Not only that, we are delighted with thelocation of our plot as it continues to attracta large number of visitors to the stand, particularly on the first day of the show. Asa result, we have some very important leadsto follow up which will, hopefully, help usmake further inroads into the UK and Irelandlubricants market.’

Likewise Peter Mayr, managing director ofLiebherr-Great Britain Ltd, described Hillhead2012 as the best ever, particularly in terms ofthe quality of visitors. ‘The show has gone reallywell,’ he said. ‘We had a lot of enquiries aboutour new TA 230 Litronic articulated dumptruckand the new Mobilmix 2.5 concrete batchingplant. More than a dozen orders for newmachines were taken at the show – some ofthem quite unexpectedly – and we have a lotof other enquiries to follow up.’

Atlas Copco said their 20+ stand staffwere completely overwhelmed at times ‰

during the show. According to Lucy Welsby, marketing & communications manager –mining, the stand was particularly busy on themiddle day of the show but still experiencedkeen interest during the wet and windy spellof weather on the morning of the final day.‘We generated around 400 leads from the firsttwo days alone and arranged three or fourcustomer demonstrations for our large MGMultiGrapple,’ she commented. ‘AlthoughWednesday was the busiest day, visitornumbers were still good on the Thursday, even in the rain.’

Con Gallagher, sales and marketingdirector for Northern Ireland-based AnacondaEquipment International Ltd, manufacturersof mobile screening and conveying equipment, was also very pleased with the way the showpanned out. ‘Although the quality of thevisitors on the first day was very good, wedidn’t think the numbers were particularlyspectacular,’ he said. ‘But the next day therewas a huge explosion in visitors, includingmany from overseas. Many came from as farafield as Australia, New Zealand, South Africaand South America, some of whom we alreadyknew, as well as lots of others who we were

not aware of.’
