THE BIG UPDATE

The Savers Connection-What It Means to BBBSAZ

Did you know that Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arizona depends HEAVILY on revenue generated through our 20+-year partnership with Savers, Inc.? In fact, in 2013, the Donation Center raised $500,000 for BBBSAZ! So every time you donate items to BBBSAZ’s Donation Center or purchase items at a local Savers WKULIWVWRUH\RXVLJQL¿FDQWO\KHOSXVVHUYHPRUHGHVHUYLQJNLGV

6DYHUVSDUWQHUVZLWKQRQSUR¿WDJHQFLHVOLNH%%%6$=DFURVVWKH86DQGcontributes more than $100 million to these organizations yearly. Our BBBSAZ Donation Center, with its nine trucks, is busy doing some pretty amazing things:

• 350 home and community pick-ups daily• Over 100 clothing bins throughout the Valley• 40 partners that donate to BBBSAZ weekly• Ongoing, individual corporate, school and agency hosted clothing drives

Spring time is the PERFECT time to recommit to de-cluttering and recycling. Here’s how to do both

while supporting BBBSAZ:

Host a clothing drive: Simple and fast for sports teams, schools, churches, and corporations. Your organization collects clothing donations, BBBSAZ Donation Center picks it up, your organization gets paid based on how much you collected, and your check is processed and sent within 10 days.

1979 was a year for a fresh start and a new adventure for Dave 3RZHOO +DYLQJ MXVW ¿QLVKHG WUDLQLQJ LQ WKH WUDQVSRUWDWLRQ LQGXVWU\for Conrail, he accepted a position in Muncie, Indiana, where he ERXJKWDQHZFDUDQGKLV¿UVWKRXVH'DYHZDVRQFDOODOOWKHWLPHand worked tons of overtime, yet he had a persistent feeling that it was time to give back to his new community. So he enrolled in Big Brothers Big Sisters.

“I hoped my efforts to show Eric that he was appreciated, ZRUWK\DQGIXQWREHZLWKZRXOG¿OODJDSLQKLVOLIH´

Life on the fast track got a whole lot faster! Dave was matched with Little Brother Eric who needed a healthy diversion, consistency and a secure friendship that was instantaneous with Big Brother Dave. They did all kinds of normal stuff from biking, taking walks, and going IRULFHFUHDPEXWWKH\DOVRGLGVRPHH[WUDRUGLQDU\WKLQJVWKDW(ULFstill remembers to this day.

Dave shared occasional Christmas cards with Eric and his family for \HDUVEXWGLGQ¶WKDYHFRQWDFWZLWK(ULFDJDLQH[FHSWIRUDEULHIYLVLWin 1988 and a meaningful phone call in 1996. Strangely, they lost track of each other again. Dave was constantly being moved by the railroad.

Eric and Dave spent their reunion weekend laughing, reminiscing, crying, barbecuing, and planning for future visits. Over the years, the time that Dave spent just being Eric’s best buddy molded Eric for the better, forever.

Eric took Dave’s memories with him throughout his life – lessons shared man-to-man, Big Brother to Little Brother about honesty, risk, adventure, hard work, perseverance and friendship.

Big Tip for Matches:

The weather is so nice these days and I am looking forward to taking my Little hiking, biking and exploring in general. Can you provide some safety tips so we can have have fun and be safe?

Great question! Being outdoors this time of year can be very enjoyable and there is so much available to do that

doesn’t necessarily cost money. When you engage in these activities please take the time to consider what safety

concerns you may run into. Here are some general commons sense tips for outdoor activities:

• Your little must always wear a helmet when riding a bike

• Get approval from your Little’s parent or guardian before every activity and be certain they are aware of what

will be involved

• Apply sunscreen before being outside for a long time period, even if it isn’t very hot

• 8EOIE¿VWXEMHOMXMRXLIGEVSVMR]SYVFEGOTEGOJSVER]SYXHSSVEGXMZMX]• Be sure your little is wearing appropriate shoes for the activity

• Bring lots of water for both of you

• Be certain to know where your BBBS membership card is located with your Little’s emergency contact and medical

information

Enjoy your adventures!
