Bildeston Ladies ClubThe Bildeston Ladies Club now meet monthly on the

1st Thursday, in Chamberlin Hall, at 7.45pm for 8pm start.

Getting Involved & Staying IndependentBildeston Talkabout Event Thursday 20th October

POPS and Age UK are holding a Talkabout event in Bildeston on Thursday 20th of October and are inviting people in later life to come along and join us for the day.

We will be talking about how we can all remain independent for longer and will listen to your thoughts and suggestions about how this can be achieved. You will also be able to find out about what is on your local area and meet other organisations that will be able to provide you with lots of useful information.

After the event we produce a report that is sent to local service pro-viders so what you tell us can be taken into account and can help to shape future services for older people. What have you got to lose?

Recipe of the Month

Breast of Duck with Plum SauceEasy and delicious - and it looks and tastes a million dollars too!

Serves 44 duck breasts50 g finely chopped red onion25ml olive or vegetable oil400g fresh plums, stoned and cut into 6/8 wedges50g light brown sugar

Fry the onion in oil for about 5 minutes. Add the plums and sugar and cook for another 5 minutes. Add the rest of the ingredients and bring to a simmer. Cook for about 20 minutes until slightly thickened. Remove the star anise and thyme and keep the sauce warm.

Dry the duck skin with kitchen paper. With a sharp knife, score through the skin every 2ml. this will help cook the fat and produce a crisp skin. Season well. heat an ovenproof frying pan and when hot, place the duck in the pan skin side down. Cook for about 5 minutes. Turn the breasts over and plaet he pan in an oven preheated to 180oC. Cook for 6-8 minutes to give a pink centre.

Put the duck on a warm plate and leave to rest for 5 minutes while you refresh your glass of wine. Slice the breasts at an angle into 5mm slices and slide one onto each plate. Spoon a little sauce over each breast and serve the rest separately. Delicous with garlic mashed potatoes and kale.

20mph zone full speed ahead It is full speed ahead for slow-lane Bildeston. David Stiff of Suffolk’s Highways department walked the High Street during morning rush hour with myself, a few parish councillors and other residents so we could point out the problems.

He agreed to meet with some parish councillors and interested residents on October 12 once he had costed out various options for traffic calming. Meanwhile I thought it was time to explode some myths about 20mph zones and traffic calming.

Myth One – “There’s no money for it” or “If we spend on traffic calming, there won’t be money for schools and hospitals.”

It is true there is no budget at county hall set aside for traffic calming. But Jeremy Pembroke has already said he has money in his “quality of life budget” for just this sort of improvement. Every county councillor is also allocated a “locality budget” every four years that they are allowed to spend on their constituency. In addition, the parish council is sitting on tens of thousands of pounds of cash, far more than considered necessary for annual maintenance and emergency reserves. This is money that ought to be spent on something. With current low rates of interest, it is not earning much in bank accounts. So money spent on slowing traffic is NOT money that comes off some essential service.

Myth Two - It won’t make any difference because you can’t legislate against bad drivers. People who like driving fast will always drive fast and you can’t do anything about it.

This is totally contradicted by all the evidence. The reality is that different people are comfortable driving at different speeds. All surveys show there is a range of speeds at which people will drive on any given bit of road, with a few at the fast and slow extremes and the bulk of people in the middle. All of them alter their speed according to the road conditions.

The Transport Research Laboratory reviewed results from 250 zones around the UK. It showed that combining 20mph signs with traffic calming measures knocked 9mph off average speeds. Annual accident frequency fell by 60%, the overall reduction in child accidents was 67%, and there was an overall reduction in accidents to cyclists of 29%.

For example, narrowing the High Street to one lane at three “pinch points” at the north and south ends of Bildeston and perhaps by the square outside Tower House would mean that people who might accelerate out of the village at 40mph would feel the need to slow to 31mph, while those who normally drive up to the square at 25mph might drive at 11mph.

Myth Three - Signs don’t look nice and any speed restrictions will mean more signs

This from the Dept of Transport’s Design Advice to Highways officers:

“20 mph repeaters are not required within a signed 20 mph zone if the limit is in effect self-enforcing through the use of traffic calming measures. However, if there is little or no traffic calming, 20 mph repeaters are required for the limit to be enforceable and repeater 20mph signs where the average speed is more than 24mph.”

The average speed in the centre of the village is already around 24mph, so no signs should be needed there. If the road is narrowed to one lane at the two ends of the village and by Tower House, Dept of Transport guidelines suggest “it is advisable” that give way markings should be painted on the road from one side. It also says “Priority signs MAY [my capitals] also be used.” My feeling is that if extra signs here are the only way to get speed restricions, then so be it. I’d rather have a safer village with a few extra signs than nothing done at all.

Narrowing the road to create priority working or chicanes will create massive tail backs through the village.

This argument ignores the fact that drivers modify their behaviour including their routes to take account of permanent road restrictions. Lorries using the village as a short cut will take other routes if they find they are continually held up. What causes tailbacks are traffic accidents and temporary lane closures, not permanently narrow roads.

Besides, if cars and lorries have to queue for a time in the village instead of thundering through without even changing gear, then that’s a result. HGVs and cars intimidate cyclists and walkers far less when they’re stationary than when they’re going full tilt. They also vibrate the windows, walls and floors of our homes far less.

A 20mph zone is not legally enforceable

Not true but I’ve even heard this from a police sergeant and our very own county councillor. The myth seems to lie in the Dept of Transport guidelines quoted above saying a 20 zone needs either traffic calming or repeater signs to be enforceable.

Suffolk constabulary go along with this policy because they don’t want to waste resources monitoring badly-planned 20 zones.

Can any of your readers help me? I’m trying to find when Bildeston Hall, the manor house, was torn down. I’m not looking for the exact year; the century will do.

I own a 17thC. wing spinet once owned by the diarist, Sam’l Pepys. It allegedly ‘was being carted away from an old hall in Suffolk as practically worthless’ around 1870. Later, the same owner said, ‘the Haward spinet I show tonight came from Bildeston Hall in Suffolk.’ The problem is, on a 19th C. map pictured on the Internet, the caption reads ‘Bildeston Hall is shown despite being demolished in 1764. On this map the Hall was shown just to the west of the parish church, St. Mary Magdalene.

An ad in the London Times from 1885 reads, ‘Sale of Estate. 1st Class landed investment situated near town of Bildeston.. comprising and excellent residence, the Hall and Chapel House farm with capital homestead and convenient off-premises 5 cottages and in all 628 acres let to highly responsible tenants.. sporting right - exc. partridge shooting... Biddell & Blencowe (auctioneers) instructed by trustees of S.B. White, deceased, to sell by auction.. 2 lots:

1: The Bildeston hall farm with 379 acres...2. Chapel House farm with 248 acres...Auctioneers Lavenham, Suffolk and Bury St Edmunds.

To me this suggests the manor house was still standing in 1885 and was probably last occupied by S. B. White.

150 years earlier, in his book, The Suffolk Traveller (1735), the topographer, John Kirbye wrote, ‘The church is a very good building standing on a hill on the west side of the town near which is the mansion of the late Bartholomew Beale, Esq. Bartholomew Beale, 3d, in fact, was buried in St Mary’s churchyard 8 Sept 1724. Bildeston Hall was one of at least 3 properties he owned in different parts of England.

Wikipedia mentions, Bildeston Hall, occasional home to lords who often had interests elsewhere, was to the south-west of the church.’ It then says, ‘The (Bildeston) weekly Wednesday market failed in 1764.. the manor house was demolished following the death of Bartholomew Beale, the last lord of the manor 40 years before.’ It also says, ‘Ploughing in 1974 removed remains of a circular moat and what may have been a fish pond.’ Adding to the confusion, Wikipedia elsewhere states ‘The Bildeston Hall still survives but is now split into two private residences on the corner of High St and Wattisham Road’. Wikipedia’s 1764 date could be questioned, for it happens to be the year Kirby’s son reissued his father’s 1735 book. I believe it contained no new material.

There is a Beale family connection to Pepys; Bartholomew Beale, 2d, was the ‘Auditor Beale’ men-tioned eight times in the Diary and he was a relative of Pepys’ wife, Elizabeth. If Bildeston Hall was still standing in c.1870, then, everything ties neatly together. On the other hand, if it had been demolished sometime before, then we might smell a ‘cover.’ After all, if you have a hot item you’d like to sanitise, why not claim it came from a no-longer existing manor house. Who would challenge it. We could have the makings of great detective story here!

Letter to the editor.... Last Words SpokenWhen Jesus was hanging on the cross dying and in great pain he said to his Father: “Father forgive them for they do not know what they are doing”.

What about us, do we need to forgive someone for something they have said or done. Many times words are spoken in the heat of the moment and afterwards we have regretted saying them. Or maybe someone has said something hurtful to us.But instead of speaking to the person and saying sorry or to say I forgive you we continue to live with the regret. Our pride will not allow us to change the situation. But showing forgiveness and saying sorry can bring a great release like a burden being lifted from our shoulders. Do we want to carry this burden to the grave or do we want to be free from it.

That choice can only be made by you and me. - Paul.

news from bildeston primary schoolWe are all happy to be back at school after the summer holidays, seeing our friends and settling into a new class.

This term we have a textile collection and anyone in the village is welcome to collect a bag from the school office and bring it back filled to school on Monday 14th No-vember before 9am. We also recycle ink cartridges, there is a box outside the office, and of course the newspaper bank in the car park. The school raises money from these schemes so the children can enjoy extra events and treats over the year. Thank you to all who help us.

On 10th September Bildeston hosted a “b natural” music festival and our school choir sang in a variety of songs including “Don’t stop believing” by Glee and originally sung by Journey an American band. We also did “Don’t worry, be happy” by Bobby McFerrin. On stage it was extremely nerve racking, but we enjoyed it!

We loved listening to the samba band from Suffolk One college in Ipswich and thought the whole festival was a major hit for Bildeston.

Over our summer season, an average of 10 riders took part in 19 Tuesday evening ‘BACK ON YOUR BIKE’ weekly rides, from mid-April to the end of August. The ‘Regular’ group cov-ered 303 miles in total over the summer, and

the ‘Slow’ group 254 miles. ●

Letter to the editorI was woken up the other day. I thought, ‘Here we go again!’ Bloomin’ noise. Pheasants squawking, birds chirruping, chickens crowing, crows cawing, cows lowing; bloomin’ countryside. I opened the curtains. looked out over the fields with sheep in the distance. A shaft of brilliant light out of a clear azure sky made me squint. Bloomin’ nice day! I strolled down to the shop to get my pa-per. Nothing but bad news, I hope. It takes me ages to get to the shop and back because of all these bloomin’ people stopping to say hello, good morning, how are you with a cheery beaming smile. ‘What’s the matter with them, haven’t they got anything better to do than be nice and friendly? Get a life!’

I want to say, ‘Do you know it takes forty two muscles to frown, but only four to stretch out your hand and smack someone in the face!’ But I don’t, I keep my head down and mutter something under my breath. Everyone is so nice, polite and friendly in this village; all of the time. Can’t they see the chip on my shoulder, it’s bloomin’ big enough. I bet they’re all just pretending. They can’t take the truth. Like my wife last year. She came back from a weekend at a beauty spa. She had the full works, scrubbed, massaged, toned, wrapped, everything. ‘So?’ she asked, ‘if you didn’t know me, how old would you think I was?’ ‘Well,’ I reply, ‘from your hair I’d say twenty. From your skin, I’d say twenty five, from your figure, I’d say...’ ‘Oh, stop it,’ she said giggling, ‘you’re just flattering me.’ ‘Hang on a bloomin mo’,’I said, ‘I haven’t added them up yet!’

People say Bildeston is so fortunate, almost perfect because we have every-thing we need in our village. A surgery, shop, pubs, church, buses, play area, art centre, bowls club, village hall, beer and music festival, everything. Not true. We haven’t got gas! How come I came to live in a place where I can’t

even put me head in the gas oven? Bloomin oil!

No. It’s no fun living in Bildeston. It’s really hard to keep on being miser-able and gloomy. The place is crammed full of things and people hell bent on making you cheerful and glad you live here. I have to work at being depressed. Maybe it is me. I know I have CDO. That’s Obsessive, Compulsive, Disorder; only in alphabetical order... like it should be!

Oscar Wilde once said, ‘Some cause happiness wherever they go; others when-ever they go.’ Well I know which category I fit in! So, I’ve decided to move. I’ve found the perfect location, in the next county of Essex, a little village by the name of Rotten End. Sounds bloomin’ perfect!
