A Racial Reckoning for All On Memorial Day, May 25, 2020, the coronavirus had locked down the country for weeks and tens of thousands had died. Millions were out of work. In Minneapolis that day, a 46-year-old Black man named George Floyd went to buy a pack of cigarettes. His life would end with a police officer’s knee dug into his neck for nearly nine minutes as he pleaded, “I can’t breathe.” George Floyd’s death, with those of Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and others, became a rallying cry for racial justice.

Controversial killings by police in Columbus have exacerbated the tension and the call for major changes in policing in our own community. In December, Columbus saw two of its own Black residents killed by local police – Casey Goodson Jr. and Andre Hill. WOSU has closely covered the protests, police killings and local investigations. PBS and NPR have provided thought-provoking programming. A comment by PBS Frontline correspondent, historian and writer Jelani Cobb stands out:

At WOSU, we’ve built a diverse staff team to advance our racial equity work. They’re advancing initiatives related to improving staff and student diversity and building learning opportunities to acknowledge a history of racism that has created advantages for some, while limiting opportunities for others. WOSU has started producing an annual Diversity Programming Report and the 2020 version is now available on our website at wosu.org/about/diversity. We will share more about our diversity initiatives in the months to come.

This month brings a variety of important programming on WOSU TV that we hope you enjoy, including the history of the Black church from Henry Louis Gates, Jr. (February 16 and 23 at 9pm) and the fascinating story of Marian Anderson in American Experience: Voice of Freedom (Monday, February 15 at 9pm).

Be safe and keep watching and listening!

Tom Rieland, General Manager

“The odds are different in Black America. Of dying of COVID.

Of being poor. Of being incarcerated. Of being abused,

or even killed, by the police.”

2020 Higgy Tyler Award: Steve Brown

Since 1997, the Higgy Tyler Award has been presented by the Friends of WOSU Board to recognize a WOSU staff member who enhances the quality of work-life within WOSU and exemplifies the qualities of initiative and creativity in service to the mission of WOSU.

Many WOSU employees stepped up and performed incredibly during the tumultuous year 2020. Among those who adapted and thrived, WOSU News Managing Editor Steve Brown stood out.

For 3 months, due to COVID protocols, Steve got up at 3am, arrived at a vacant newsroom and delivered the latest news to 89.7 NPR News listeners with authority and empathy. Then as the pandemic eased a bit, protests erupted in downtown Columbus after the death of George Floyd. Then came the statehouse bribery scandal. Then the election. Then another surge in COVID cases. He not only led the newsroom to extraordinary coverage of an extraordinary year, but he also led by example.

Congratulations to Steve and thanks to the Friends of WOSU Board for supporting this annual staff award.

Listeners of On Point on 89.7 NPR News will notice a difference with the award-winning program. For one, it is shorter. The show went from two hours to one hour in the fall. With the change came a sharper focus on the biggest issues of our time.

Every weekday at noon, On Point host Meghna Chakrabarti leads provocative conversations that help make sense of the world. Each show is a deeply researched, beautifully produced hour. Listeners will learn, be challenged – and have some fun, too.

The new On Point has many layers. Meghna’s conversations are intermingled with thoughtful reporting, diverse voices offering alternate viewpoints and carefully curated comments from listeners. Even with a more complex production, On Point remains nimble, quickly presenting timely shows on breaking news events.

Meghna Chakrabarti is one of the most engaging hosts in public radio. With degrees from Oregon State, Harvard and Boston University, she has won awards for individual reporting from both the Associated Press and the Radio Television News Directors

89.7 FM NPR News can also be heard on our regional network stations on HD Radio as well as streaming online at wosu.org and on WOSU’s mobile App.

February Programming Highlights As pandemic restrictions have continued to complicate things for performing groups, it’s reassuring to hear our Columbus Symphony Orchestra in fine form with concerts recorded before the shutdown. And this February there are many favorites from the Romantic era. This is repertoire where our CSO truly shines. The month brings you Elgar’s Cello Concerto and a Brahms Symphony on February 7, as well as Chopin’s First Piano Concerto and Elgar’s Enigma Variations on February 14. Then it’s two weeks of a Russian Winter Festival, including the return of pianist Natasha Paremski. Join host Christopher Purdy Sunday afternoons at 1pm.

On February 20, Classical 101 will air Lift Every Voice: A Musical Story from Sorrow to Justice. It’s a collection of powerful songs, stories and interviews with some

of today’s most acclaimed Black artists and scholars. This program aims to create awareness around the African American musical past, while inspiring listeners to hope for our musical future together as every voice is heard and celebrated. Join hosts Julie Amacher and Tesfa Wondemagegnehu Saturday, February 20 at 12pm.

In February, The American Sound offers Florence Price’s sumptuously lyrical Piano

Sonata in E minor and Howard Hanson’s shimmering “Romantic” symphony. Also, William Grant Still’s blues tribute to Harlem’s Lenox Avenue and Edwin McLean’s jazzy Incantations. Join host Jennifer Hambrick for The American Sound, Saturdays at 6pm and Tuesdays at 7pm.

It’s a Bach Fest this month on Symphony Showcase. Host Kent Teeters has a roster of notable recordings of Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos and Orchestral Suites. You’ll also hear a stirring orchestration of the “St. Anne” Prelude and Fugue and his Concerto for 3 Violins. Be listening Sundays at 6pm and Thursdays at 7pm to hear groups including Apollo’s Fire and the Linde Consort.

The Metropolitan Opera’s broadcast season of archived recordings continues this month with Massenet’s Cendrillon, Puccini’s La Rondine and Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier. And tune in on February 6 to hear the Listeners’ Choice Historic Broadcast. Saturdays at 1pm.
