January Edition 2017
President Report
The
Dear
Members
Welcome to 2017 and a Happy New Year!
As most of you will be aware, a call was put out for any members
who could help do a Christmas Day patrol. The final response
was outstanding. Of particular note I saw Mal Pratt (Life Gover-
nor) leading by example doing a patrol. To every MEMBER
who patrolled on Christmas Day – THANK YOU your commit-
ment is very much appreciated and recognised.
1 January 2017 the Black Swan celebrated its 101st anniversary.

Well done to club members that have
made the Queensland Representative
team competing in the Interstate
Championships:
U17 Tiarnee Massie
U15 Adam Palmer, Jeneya Massie
U14 Dominque Stitt, Sarah Per-
kins, Sam Short, Joseph
McMenamin and Oliver
Monoghan.
This carnival is being held at Alexan-
dra Headland on Friday 20 January.
Please come down and support your
fellow members who will be compet-
ing at their best.
Murphy Home Maroochy Classic Car-
nival is on the next day, 21 January. It
is a big task to run a carnival and eve-
ry member who comes along to help is
appreciated. Many hands make light
work, so put your hand up and register
for the workforce. Club celebrations
will be held after the beach has been
packed up.
The Maroochydore SLSC/Shimoda
Life Saving Club Exchange Program
has come and gone for 2016 – this
being the 19th season in operation. As
2016 was Maroochydore’s centenary
year, Shimoda President Eda visited.
During Eda’s stay discussions were
held on how to build the program into
the future, both in Japan and here at
Maroochydore. My belief is that this
Cultural Exchange between our mem-
bers must continue. The Shimoda
Committee and I will work hard with
our Sister Club to make the objectives
set this year come to fruition.
Raising public awareness and finan-
cial support for Maroochydore SLSC
is an ongoing task each year. In con-
junction with the Board of Market-
ing, the General Manager and his
team have run a successful $10,000
Draw. All 250 tickets were sold
before the day, and every guest I
spoke with said what a fun event it
was. It is pleasing that long-term
club supporters, Bruce and Sue
[Coffee Club, Cotton Tree owners]
won the major prize. Their ongoing
generosity was displayed on the day
when they donated a portion of the
prize winnings back to the club.
I would like to say thank-you for all
the time and effort members of the
club’s Management Committees
give each month. In total, 8 Direc-
tors commit to ensuring surf lifesav-
ing operations are on track via the
Board of Management, and another 4
members join the President, Deputy
President and Treasurer to oversee
the viable operation of the Support-
ers Club. You have a strong team
representing your club, and together
we will keep up the good work and
finish the back end of the season on
a high.
In closing, I would like to remind
members of our club motto
“Vigilance and Service”. To me this
means that we will provide all neces-
sary resources and services to ensure
No Life is lost between the Flags at
Maroochydore Beach.
See you on the beach, or at one of
our club events!

Lifesaving
Happy New Year - 2017 is here and
so is the second half of the patrolling
season. December, or more specifical-
ly the 'festive holiday period' brought
the biggest strain on our patrols so far.
Thanks to the 38 volunteers listed on
this page who kept our beach safe on
Christmas Day. As has been recent
tradition, each Christmas Day volun-
teers will receive a gift from the club.
On the day, patrolling members were
fed a BBQ breakfast (thanks to Anne
Colston) or platters including More-
ton Bay bugs, prawns, meats, salads
& fruit.
Lifesavers may have noticed that we
now have spray jackets for loan in the
arena for those times that patrol gets
unexpectedly cool or windy. These
are thanks to a uniform grant won by
Kim Musgrove and are clearly
marked, so please leave these hanging
in the arena when you've finished
with the jackets. Many have said they
like the look of them and would like
to get their own - the jackets are avail-
able for $55 from SLSQ website.
I'd like to take this opportunity to re-
mind patrolling members that you are
part of a TEAM that relies on you.
Please remain diligent with your ros-
ter, or on the occasions that you can't
make patrols, use the Facebook page to
request swaps and communicate with
your patrol captains. We typically see
standards drop at this time of year so be
warned that while we've managed with
the carrot and not the stick so far this
season, penalties will be imposed for
missed patrols through January and Feb-
ruary. Finally, I want to thank all Patrol-
ling Members for an excellent first half
of the season. I continue to be impressed
by the work coming from the Board of
Life Saving Members, the Patrol Cap-
tains are more united than we've been
for some time and there is genuine effort
to operate at the highest standards. And
as always, the long serving stalwarts
appear when we need them to help out
on patrol and hold everything together.
This is a great time to be a part of
Maroochydore Life Saving - See you on
the beach. Scott Steele.

Social Media
Policy
Social Media is a fantastic communica-
tion tool that is used everyday around
the world, allowing people to connect
and disseminate information via vari-
ous channels.
MSLSC recognises the benefits of so-
cial media as an important tool of en-
gagement and enrichment for its mem-
bers and the importance it plays in in-
creasing the awareness and profile of
MSLSC, members and more.
However we need to remember that as
a representative of MSLSC, your activ-
ity on social media is reflective of our
brand. It is important that MSLSC rep-
utation is not tarnished by anyone us-
ing social media tools inappropriately,
particularly in relation to any content
that might reference MSLSC.
MSLSC also has a responsibility and
follow the SLSQ Policy MPA1 Mem-
ber Social Media and Online Commu-
nication Policy Guidelines.
This Social Media policy provides our
members, staff and volunteers, a guide
to appropriate and accepted social
media use, and is available on our
website.
Club Affairs
The half-year General Meeting was
held on 31 December, with over 67
members attending. As requested at
the General Meeting the minutes will
be finalised and circulated to members
in the later half of January.
Planning for the Future is underway.
Members will be sent a short survey at
the end of January asking for their
input into how they see the future at
the club. The results of the survey
will be collated and a workshop held
after Aussies, at a date to be set.
Your input is valuable so please take
the time to have your say.

A Big YEP
Congrats to
Ashleigh
Patrick
Ashleigh is our 1st Youth Member to
reach the Bronze level in YEP (150
Surf Creds). Your blue, black &
white Havaiana thongs are on the
way!!
Ashleigh reached her target in less
than 5 months by just doing what she
would normally do. By attending the
youth events, gaining her Surf
Rescue Certificate, going to club
training and competition, and rolling-
up for patrols. Logging all of her
activities into Surfguard!
Ashleigh is now well on her way to
collecting 250 Creds to gain Silver
level.
Follow the leader board below... There are a few other youths close
on the heels of Ashleigh, so make
sure you register all the things you
do at, and for, the club.

Now the Business end of the season is
just weeks away with our own Mur-
phy Homes carnival and the Champi-
onship rounds following close behind.
The Surf Rescue Championships at
Branch on the 13,14 and 15 of Janu-
ary will determine those teams and
individuals who will advance to State
Titles (a qualifying event). So if you
are around to give your support please
head to the event and cheer your team
mates on.
The Black Swan has contested 19
carnivals to date across all disciplines
with great results in all those carnivals
endorsed by the Board of Surf Sports.
The Club will not be contesting the
3rd round of Oceans 38 at Broad-
beach on the 7 and 8 January, but
focusing on the Summer of Surf at
Surfers Paradise in early February.
Patrol attendance has been outstand-
ing pre-Christmas from Surf Sports
members, but please stay diligent, our
patrolling season does not end till
after Aussies. The “Miss 2 Patrols and
Cannot be Entered into Carnivals”
policy will be enforced.
Water Safety and Officials continues
to be a major issue for the Club with
a small number carrying the load for
the many. If you are qualified and
can help please make yourself known

Coach Update
A Happy New Year to everyone. I hope you’ve
had a good festive season and enjoyed time
with family and friends.
Prior to Christmas the Senior Squad undertook
a training camp at the club. This involved mul-
tiple sessions per day of board, swim, iron and
transitions. On the second day the group split
into 2 and completed differing torture tests
pushing the athletes through a different type of
fatigue and mental resilience.
We had 28 people attend a dinner at the Club
on the Friday (camp week) night from the age
of 14 to 28. It was great to see so many of our
competitive members enjoy each other’s com-
pany after a hard week together.
Training is now back in full swing with all
water sessions continuing to be based from the
club over the holidays. Check the Squad
Schedule for full details.
Congratulations to the eight Maroochydore
members who have gained selection in the
Queensland Team;
U17 Tiarnee Massie
U15 Jenaya Massie, Adam Palmer
U14 Dominique Stitt, Sarah Perkins, Olive
Monaghan, Joe Mc Menamin, Sam Short.
You can watch our young chargers race at Al-
exandra Headland on the 20th of January.

Happy New Year and I hope you and
your family had a great time recharg-
ing the batteries for an eventful
2017.
To date, all our Nippers are profi-
cient and on their way of attaining
their four-key components of our
Nipper program. Entailing Life Sav-
ing techniques, Surf Skill develop-
ment, Surf Sports and offer commu-
nity assistance which can lead to a
healthy social network of lifelong
friends.
This season we hosted the AMART
Sports carnival at our beach. A spe-
cial thank you to AMART Sports for
your continued support of Queens-
land’s Junior Surf Life Savers. The
day was broadly supported by many
willing workers and a number of
members went over and above to
ensure it was a successful carnival.
Our new carnival co-ordinator
Wayne Spindler pulled together an
army of volunteers to keep Maroo-
chydore’s reputation intact as a bril-
liant carnival hosts. The carnival
itself was a terrific showcase for the
club and demonstrated that we can
pull together and run a very success-
ful event. We won the carnival, in
fact to date, our Nipper team have
won every Queensland carnival that
our Nippers have contested. An ex-
traordinary result which surely
demonstrates that the Coaching
Team, Age Managers and all our
Volunteers are delivering one of the
best Nipper programs in Queens-
land.
We are now embarking on the busi-
ness end of the season with the State
Titles being contested at Harvey
Bay. We anticipate sending a large
team that will need some extra skills
like wading and dolphin diving be-
ing added to our work load over the
next few months. It certainly is an
exciting time for our Nippers and
many are focused to test themselves
in the months ahead.
In summary, I’d like to be very
grateful to all our volunteers in our
organisation and the special help
that our nipper parents provide for
the exciting direction of our future
lifesavers.
My best in lifesaving,
