Blanco boys are on the road to

Gateway tonight.

Boys

Blanco’s boys basketball team travels to Gateway tonight to

take on the Gators.

“It will be a tough challenge,” said head coach Derrick Her-

nandez. “They have yet to win a game in district play, but

Gateway is a tough place to play and we will have to be sharp

defensively.”

“Bringing our record to 2—2 is extremely important heading

into next week’s games at Ingram on Tuesday and hosting

Florence on Friday.”

Girls

The girls enjoy a night off, before resuming district play next

Tuesday at Ingram. The Lady Panthers currently are second in

district play.

“We are playing good but are striving for greatness,” said

head coach Stuart Schultz. “We are working on all the little

things that will get us there.”

District Puts Unsold Property

Up for Sealed Bids Two Electric Ranges, School Bus to

Go to the Highest Bidder

Prince Died from an Overdose of Fentanyl

Medical authorities have discovered what caused the death of

musician Prince: He overdosed on the drug fentanyl.

The announcement may have been the first time you heard

about fentanyl. It’s a drug that can be very bad news if used in

a way other than recommended by doctors.

Fentanyl is a very powerful synthetic opioid that doctors

sometimes prescribe for patients who are in extreme pain, like

right after serious surgery, or cancer patients nearing the end of

their lives.

Prince reportedly had hip surgery in the mid-2000s and he

may have still been in some pain, but it’s unclear how and

where he got the drug. People sometimes get it from their doc-

tors, but there’s also an illegal version of fentanyl, with street

names like Apache, China White, China Girl, and TNT.

Lethal Weapon

Just how powerful is fentanyl? Up to 50 times stronger than

heroin, and up to 100 times stronger than morphine. It’s sup-

posed to be used only by patients who have the highest level of

pain.

How dangerous is it? Well, when officials seize a batch of

fentanyl, they have to wear the highest-grade Hazmat suit, be-

cause the drug can also be absorbed through your skin.

So it’s easy for someone to overdose on fentanyl. In fact,

between 2013 and 2014, fentanyl overdoses increased by 80

percent in the US.

Hiding in Plain Sight

Sometimes fentanyl is sold by itself; sometimes it’s mixed

with heroin, cocaine, or other drugs. So a person who uses

those drugs also risks using fentanyl without knowing it. And

because even a small amount of it can be dangerous or deadly,

the user wouldn’t know they’re risking their life.

What this all comes down to is: If you use any one of sever-

al different illegal drugs, you could also be using fentanyl. And

Prince’s death is a reminder that fentanyl can give you much

more than you bargained for.

As part of our effort to reduce substance abuse by our young peo-

ple, The Bell will be running Public Service Announcements each

week to educate students and parents in regards to substance abuse.

Today’s information comes from a an article published on the web-

site of the National Institute on Drug Abuse for Teens, 6/27/16..

Two electric ranges placed up for sealed bids.

Blanco ISD is placing two electric ranges and a school bus

up for sealed bids.

The two electric ranges are surplus items from the Family

and Consumer Sciences Department. They were originally part

of an inventory of items that were placed up for sealed bids in

December; however, nobody placed a bid on them.

The school bus was placed up for bid last summer, and did

receive one bid. However, the person who placed the bid never

paid for the bus and never came to pick it up.

Bids for the property items will be received until 2:00 PM on

Thursday, January 26, 2017.
