7th Grade Terms• Decomposer- and scavengers break down dead plants and animals. They also break down the

waste (poop) of other organisms

• ATP Adenosine triphosphate, or ATP, is an organic compound that provides energy for plants during dark hours

• Primary Succession - is one of two types of biological and ecological succession of plant life, occurring in an environment in which new substrate devoid of vegetation and other organisms usually lacking soil, such as a lava flow or area left from retreated glacier, is deposited.

• Ecological Succession - is the gradual process by which ecosystems change and develop over time. Nothing remains the same and habitats are constantly changing

• Secondary Succession - is the series of community changes which take place on a previously colonized, but disturbed or damaged habitat. Examples include areas which have been cleared of existing vegetation (such as after tree-felling in a woodland) and destructive events such as fires.

• Tertiary Consumer - a carnivore at the topmost level in a food chain that feeds on other carnivores; an animal that feeds only on secondary

• Conservation of Matter- the mass of the system must remain constant over time, as system mass cannot change quantity if it is not added or removed. Hence, the quantity of mass is "conserved" over time

7th Grade Terms

• Abiotic – non living factors in an ecosystem that support the living things ; sunlight, water, air, soil

• Conservation Of Energy - Energy cannot be created or destroyed, but can change form

• Limiting factor - In Biology and Ecology. In biology, common limiting factor resources are environmental conditions that limit the growth, abundance, or distribution of an organism or a population of organisms in an ecosystem

• Pioneer Organism - also called a disaster taxon—is an organism that populates a region after a (short-term) natural disaster, mass extinction, or any other event that kills off most life in that area.

• Population- All the organisms of the same species that live in the same area at the same time

• Niche- The role an organism plays in an ecosystem

• Overpopulated Species

• Biodiversity - the variety of life in the world or in a particular habitat or ecosystem

7Th Grade Terms

• Cellular Respiration - is the process by which the chemical energy of "food" molecules is released and partially captured in the form of ATP.

• Producer - An organism that makes their own food is known as a

• Secondary Consumer - Secondary consumers eat primary consumers. They are carnivores (meat-eaters) and omnivores (animals that eat both animals and plants

• Energy Pyramid - is a graphical model of energy flow in a community. The different levels represent different groups of organisms that might compose a food chain. From the bottom-up, they are as follows: Producers — bring energy from nonliving sources into the community.

• Nitrogen Cycle – Nitrogen is both the most abundant element in the atmosphere and, as a building block of proteins and nucleic acids such as DNA, Nitrogen makes up 78% of atmosphere.

• How does photosynthesis and cellular respiration play a role in the cycling of matter.

• During photosynthesis, producers make oxygen for consumers; consumers during cellular respiration in turn make carbon dioxide for the producers

6th Grade Terms

• Hubble Telescope

• takes pictures from light years away and sends them back to Earth

• This is a large telescope that orbits the earth beyond the Earth's atmosphere.

• It provides photographs of the planets and the universe beyond.

Hubble Space Telescope

6th Grade- Concepts & Terms

• Hubble Telescope –A large telescope which orbits the planet from space; takes pictures from light years away and sends them back to Earth

• Astronaut- A person who has been trained to fly a spaceship, or act as a scientist in space

• Neil Armstrong – The first astronaut on the moon

• GEO – orbit that exactly matches Earth’s rotation

• LEO – outermost fringes of Earth’s atmosphere, moves much quicker than Earth does Telescopes

6th Grade Concepts & Terms• Space Probes are unmanned research crafts

sent into space to conduct science experiments.

• Satellite – a small natural or man made-object that orbits a planet

• Saturn Rockets – non-reusable rockets used to carry humans and supplies into space

• Orbit – The path an object takes in space as it moves around the sun

• GPS – Global Positioning System, a tracking device which uses satellites orbiting the planet
