Video #1 Titled – “The Word of The Truth of The Gospel” – Chapter 1:1-8-BB

Lesson #1 – “Faithful Walking” (NLT)

Greetings from Paul-This letter is from Paul, chosen by the will of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus, and from our brother Timothy.2 We are writing to God’s holy people in the city of Colosse, who are faithful brothers and sisters in Christ. May God our Father give you grace and peace.

Paul’s Thanksgiving and Prayer-3 We always pray for you, and we give thanks to

God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. 4 For we have heard of your faith in Christ

Jesus and your love for all of God’s people, 5 which come from your confident hope

of what God has reserved for you in heaven. You have had this expectation ever

since you first heard the truth of the Good News.6 This same Good News that came

to you is going out all over the world. It is bearing fruit everywhere by changing

lives, just as it changed your lives from the day you first heard and understood the

truth about God’s wonderful grace.7 You learned about the Good News from

Epaphras, our beloved co-worker. He is Christ’s faithful servant, and he is helping

us on your behalf 8 He has told us about the love for others that the Holy Spirit has

given you.

KJV -1:1-8

Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timotheus our brother,2 To

the saints and faithful brethren in Christ which are at Colosse: Grace be unto you,

and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

3 We give thanks to God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for

you,4 Since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus, and of the love which ye have to

all the saints,5 For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard

before in the word of the truth of the gospel;

6 Which is come unto you, as it is in all the world; and bringeth forth fruit, as it doth

also in you, since the day ye heard of it, and knew the grace of God in truth:7 As ye

also learned of Epaphras our dear fellow servant, who is for you a faithful minister

of Christ;8 Who also declared unto us your love in the Spirit

Believer Bible Commentary Notes for this week’s lesson:

The word “SAINTS” is not used in this NLT version, but our lesson does reference to

this word. In this version it uses the phrase “God’s holy people”. Saints=separated

to God from the world, as a result they should be living holy lives.

IN CHRIST- conveys more intimacy, acceptance, and security than any human can

understand. GRACE pictures God stooping down to sinful men, lost humanity in

loving and tender compassion. PEACE summarizes all that results in the life of a

person when they accept God’s grace as a free gift.

GRACE comes 1st then PEACE- No Grace, No Peace.

1:3 – Paul falls to his knees in prayer, one characteristic of Paul was, he always

began prayer with praise to the Lord. The prayers of Paul take on a new meaning in

this book. Paul was praying for people he had never met. Think of the prayer list

Paul had (we have a hard time remembering all our friends and family- what about

our Pastors and all the people they are to try to remember and pray for, WOW!)

Paul’s untiring prayer life helps us understand him better.

Page 5: The Book of Colossians Life Application Bible Study

5

1:4 – Faith IN CHRIST and of their love to all the saints. TRUE FAITH. Someone truly

saved, walking IN CHRIST, IN FAITH, must be evidenced by a life of love to God and

one’s fellow man. Religious people TALK IT AND IN CHRIST PEOPLE WALK IT!

Paul speak of FAITH as being IN CHRIST. The Lord Jesus Christ is always set forth in

scripture as the OBJECT of FAITH. Faith in itself is not sufficient. That faith must be

centered IN JESUS CHRIST. Since He can never fail, no one who trusts Him will ever

be disappointed. The fact that Paul heard of these people’s faith and love is

evidence they were not “secret believers”.

1:5 – The apostle here, could be giving thanks not only for their faith and love, but

for the future inheritance (Heaven) which one day would be theirs. “Faith rests on

the past, Love works in the future and Hope is here” the fulfillment of our salvation

when we shall go to Heaven and enter our eternal inheritance. Epasphras had

probably been the one to originally share the gospel with those in Colosse. What

they heard was: “THE WORD OF THE TRUTH OF THE GOSPEL”.

1:6 – This may mean the gospel was for all men and was being spread abroad with

purposeful limitation. FRUIT, in nature a plant does not usually bear fruit and

increase at the same time. Many times, it is pruned in order to bear fruit. But the

Gospel does BOTH at the same time. It bears fruit in the salvation of souls and

upbuilding of the saints (Christ followers), and spreads from nation to nation, this

is the effect of the gospel in Colosse.

Since the day they heard and knew the grace of God in Truth, there was numerical

growth in the church, in addition there was spiritual growth in the lives of the

believers.

1:7 – Paul commends Epaphras as a dear fellow servant and faithful minister of

Christ on their behalf. No bitterness or jealousy on Paul’s part (How would we

handle this? In prison, cold, hungry, dirty, tired, lonely and nothing but time on our

hands, thinking about all we had done for Jesus in our lives and this dude is out,

free, and serving and sharing and seeing the fruit of his labor)

1:8 – Epaphras had told Paul about the church in Colosse, about the peoples love

in the Spirit. This was genuine love for God and His people that was created by the

indwelling of the Spirit of God.

Believers Bible Commentary Verses 9-14:

The apostle clearly states that it was from Epaphras that the believers had heard

the gospel message and had come to know it experientially in their lives. There was

nothing of bitterness or jealousy about the Apostle Paul. It did not bother him to

see another preacher receiving commendation. In fact, he was the first to express

his appreciation for other servants of the Lord. It was from Epaphras that Paul

himself had heard of the Colossians’ love in the Spirit.

He did not pray in generalities. Here he seems to make four separate requests for

the Colossians: (1) spiritual insight; (2) a worthy walk; (3) abundant power; (3) a

thankful spirit.

First, he prayed that they might be filled with the knowledge of God’s will in all

wisdom and spiritual understanding. He did not ask that they should be satisfied

with the boasted knowledge of the Gnostics. He would have them enter into the

full knowledge of God’s will for their lives as revealed in His Word. This knowledge

is not of a worldly or carnal nature; it is characterized by spiritual wisdom and

spiritual understanding—wisdom to apply the knowledge in the best way and

understanding to see what agrees and what conflicts with God’s will.

The true purpose of spiritual wisdom and understanding is to enable Christians to

walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him. Here we have a very important lesson

on the subject of guidance. God does not reveal His will to us in order to satisfy our

curiosity. Neither is it intended to cater to our ambition or pride. Rather the Lord

shows us His will for our lives in order that we might please Him in all that we do.

Being fruitful in every good work. Here is a helpful reminder that although a person

is not saved by good works, he most certainly is saved for good works.

Not only did Paul want them to bear fruit in every good work, but also to increase

in the knowledge of God. How is this done? First of all, it is done through the

diligent study of God’s word. Then it is also found in obeying His teachings and

serve Him faithfully.

Page 10: The Book of Colossians Life Application Bible Study

10

1:11 – The Christian life cannot be lived by mere human energy. It requires

supernatural strength. This power is needed so that the child of God may have all

patience and longsuffering with joy. This deserves careful attention!

To maintain joy within and kindness to others requires God’s power and is

Christian victory. The difference between patience and longsuffering has been

defined as the difference between enduring without complaint and enduring

without retaliation. God’s grace has achieved one of its greatest objects in the life

of the believer who can suffer patiently and praise God in the midst of the fiery

trial.

1:12 – When God saves someone, He instantly bestows on that person fitness for

heaven. That fitness is Christ. Nothing can improve on that. Not even a long life of

obedience and service here on earth makes a person more fit for heaven than he

was the day he was saved. Our title to glory is found in His blood.

1:13 – In making us “qualified to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the

light”, God has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the

kingdom of the Son of His love. As sinners we were in bondage to Satan, but

through Christ we have been delivered from his clutches and now we are subjects

to Christ’s Kingdom. Satan’s kingdom is of darkness—and absence of light, warmth,

and joy; while the kingdom of Christ is one of love.

1:14 – Christ is first presented as the ONE in whom we have redemption… the

forgiveness of sins. Redemption describes the act whereby we were bought from

the slave market of sin.

Video #3 Titled (calcarysb.com) – The True Nature of Jesus – Chapter 1:15-20-BB

Lesson #3 – “Christ is the Image of God” (NLT)

Christ Is Supreme-15 Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation,16 for through him God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth. He made the things we can see and the things we can’t see—such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world. Everything was created through him and for him.17 He existed before anything else, and he holds all creation together.18 Christ is also the head of the church, which is his body. He is the beginning, supreme over all who rise from the dead, so he is first in everything. 19 For God in all his fullness was pleased to live in Christ,20 and through him God reconciled everything to himself. He made peace with everything in heaven and on earth by means of Christ’s blood on the cross.

KJV- 1:15-20 15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:16 For by

him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and

invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all

things were created by him, and for him:

17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.18 And he is the head of

the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all

things he might have the preeminence.

19 For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell;20 And, having made

peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by

him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.

Believers Bible Commentary notes 15-20:

1:15 – The Lord is here described as the image of the invisible God. Image carries

with it at least two ideas. First, it conveys the thought that the Lord Jesus has

enabled us to see what God is like. God is Spirit and is therefore invisible. But in the

person of Christ, God made Himself visible to mortal eyes. In that sense the Lord

Jesus is the image of the invisible God. Whoever has seen Him has seen the Father

(see John 14:9).

1:16 – This verse states conclusively that the Lord Jesus is not a creature, but the

very Creator. In this verse we learn that all things—the whole universe of things—

were created not only by Him, but through Him.

The apostle then goes on to state that the Lord’s creation included thing visible

and things invisible. The word visible needs no explanation, but doubtless the

Apostle Paul realized that when he said invisible, he would arouse our curiosity.

Therefore, he proceeds to give a break-down of what he means by things invisible.

They include thrones, dominions, principalities and powers. We believe that these

terms refer to angelic powers.

1:17 – He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. Not only did the Lord

Jesus exist before there was any creation, but also in Him all things consist. This

means that He is the Sustainer of the universe and the Source of its perpetual

motion. He controls the stars and the sun and the moon.

1:18 – And He is the head of that body. The head speaks of guidance, dictation,

control. He occupies the place of pre-eminence in the church. As we read that in all

things, He may have the preeminence, it is only proper that we should ask

ourselves, “Does He have the preeminence in my life?” All fullness dwells in Christ.

The word for dwell here means to dwell permanently and not simply to visit

temporarily.

Video #4 Titled (calcarysb.com) –Aliens Now Reconciled – Chapter 1:21-29-BB

Lesson #4 – “You Were the Enemy” (NLT) 21 This includes you who were once far away from God. You were his enemies,

separated from him by your evil thoughts and actions. 22 Yet now he has reconciled

you to himself through the death of Christ in his physical body. As a result, he has

brought you into his own presence, and you are holy and blameless as you stand

before him without a single fault.

23 But you must continue to believe this truth and stand firmly in it. Don’t drift

away from the assurance you received when you heard the Good News. The Good

News has been preached all over the world, and I, Paul, have been appointed as

God’s servant to proclaim it.

Paul’s Work for the Church-24 I am glad when I suffer for you in my body, for I am participating in the sufferings of Christ that continue for his body, the church. 25 God has given me the responsibility of serving his church by proclaiming his entire message to you. 26 This message was kept secret for centuries and generations past, but now it has been revealed to God’s people. 27 For God wanted them to know that the riches and glory of Christ are for you Gentiles, too. And this is the secret: Christ lives in you. This gives you assurance of sharing his glory.

28 So we tell others about Christ, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all

the wisdom God has given us. We want to present them to God, perfect in their

relationship to Christ. 29 That’s why I work and struggle so hard, depending on

Christ’s mighty power that works within me.

KJV – 1: 21-29 21 And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked

works, yet now hath he reconciled22 in the body of his flesh through death, to

present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight:

23 If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from

the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every

creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;

Page 17: The Book of Colossians Life Application Bible Study

17

24 Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is behind of the

afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body's sake, which is the church:

25 Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is

given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God;26 Even the mystery which hath been

hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints:

27 To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery

among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:28 Whom we preach,

warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present

every man perfect in Christ Jesus:29 Whereunto I also labour, striving according to

his working, which worketh in me mightily.

Chapter 1:21-29 Summarized

➢ You WERE once far from God

➢ You WERE enemies

➢ You WERE separated by evil thoughts and actions

➢ NOW you ARE reconciled through Jesus

➢ Resulting NOW, we are Holy, Blameless, Standing Firm and Without a Single

Fault

18

Believers Bible Commentary Notes Verse 21-29:

1:21 - Paul reminds the Colossians that reconciliation in their case was already an

accomplished fact. Before their conversion, the Colossians had been Gentile

sinners, alienated from God and enemies of His in their minds because of their

wicked works. They desperately needed to be reconciled, and the Lord Jesus

Christ, in His matchless grace, had taken the initiative.

1:22- He reconciled them in the body of His flesh through death. It was not by His

life but by His death. The expression of the body of His flesh simply means that the

Lord Jesus effected reconciliation by dying on the cross in a real human body (not

as a spirit being, which the Gnostics claimed Him to be)

The wonderful result of this reconciliation is expressed in the words to present you

holy, and blameless, and above reproach in His sight. What marvelous grace, that

ungodly sinners can be delivered from their past evil life and conveyed into such a

realm of blessing!

1:23 – Now the Apostle Paul adds one of those “IF” passages. The Spirit of God has

seen fit to put many of these so-called “IF” passages in the word of God in order to

challenge all who profess the name of Christ as to the reality of their profession.

The apostle is urging the Colossians not to be moved away from the hope that

accompanies the gospel, or which the gospel inspires. They should continue in the

faith which they learned from Epaphras, grounded and steadfast.

Again, Paul speaks of the gospel as having been preached to every creature (or “all

creation”) under heaven. The gospel goes out to all creation, but it has not yet

reached literally every creature.

1:24 - The last six verses in chapter 1 describe Paul’s ministry. First of all, it was

carried out in an atmosphere of suffering. Writing from prison, Paul can say that he

now rejoices in his sufferings for the saints, that is, on their account. As a servant

of the Lord Jesus Christ, he was called upon to endure untold hardships,

persecution, and afflictions.

1:25 -We are not expected simply to lead men to Christ by the gospel and then

abandon them to get along as best they can. Rather, we are expected to direct our

evangelistic efforts to the formation of local NT churches where the converts can

be built up in their most holy faith, including the truth of the church.

Page 19: The Book of Colossians Life Application Bible Study

19

The Lord wants His babes to be directed to feeding stations where they will be

nourished and where they can grow.

A steward is one who cares for the interests or property of another. Paul was a

steward in the sense that the great truth of the church was entrusted to him in a

very special way. One of the most difficult expressions in this chapter is to fulfill the

word of God. Exactly what does Paul mean by this? In what sense, then, did Paul

fulfill or complete the word of God?

First of all, to fulfill may mean to declare fully, to make known. Thus, Paul had

declared the whole council of God.

1:26 – That Paul’s fulfilling of the word of God had to do with the mystery is borne

out in this verse, namely, the mystery which has been hidden from ages and from

generations, but now has been revealed to His saints. In the NT, a mystery is a

truth not previously revealed, but now made known to the sons of men through

the apostles and prophets of the NT. It is a truth that man could never have arrived

at by his own intelligence, but which God has graciously deigned to make known.

1:27 – The truth of this mystery may be summarized as follows: (1) The church is

the Body of Christ. All true believers are members of the Body and destined to

share Christ’s glory forever. (2) The Lord Jesus is the Head of the Body, providing

its life, nourishment, and direction. (3) Jews have no preference as to admission to

the church; neither are Gentiles at any disadvantage. Both Jew and Gentile

become members of the Body through faith and from one new man.

The particular aspect of the mystery which Paul is emphasizing in verse 27 is that

the Lord Jesus is willing to dwell within the Gentile heart. Christ in you, the hope of

glory. This was spoken to the Colossians, who were Gentiles.

Which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. The indwelling Christ is the believers’

hope of glory. We have no other title to heaven than the Savior Himself. The fact

that He indwells us makes heaven as sure as if we were already there.

Warning every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present

every man perfect in Christ Jesus. Here we have further insight into the ministry of

the beloved apostle. It was a man-to-man ministry. He warned the unsaved of the

awful wrath to come, and he taught the saints the great truths of the Christian

faith.

Page 20: The Book of Colossians Life Application Bible Study

20

He was not satisfied to see souls saved and then to pass on. He wanted to present

every man perfect in Christ Jesus. He wants them to mature, full-grown, adult

Christians. He wants them to be well-grounded in the truth. Do we share a similar

burden for those whom we have led to Christ?

1:29 – He realized that it was only as he was empowered by the Lord that he was

able to serve Him at all. He was conscious of the fact that the Lord was working in

him mightily as he went from place to place planting churches and feeding the

saints of God.

Video #5 Titled (calcarysb.com) – Jesus is the Wisdom and Knowledge – Chapter 2:1-10

Lesson # 5 – (NLT)

I want you to know how much I have agonized for you and for the church at

Laodicea, and for many other believers who have never met me personally. 2 I

want them to be encouraged and knit together by strong ties of love. I want them

to have complete confidence that they understand God’s mysterious plan, which is

Christ himself. 3 In him lie hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

4 I am telling you this so no one will deceive you with well-crafted arguments. 5 For

though I am far away from you, my heart is with you. And I rejoice that you are

living as you should and that your faith in Christ is strong.

Freedom from Rules and New Life in Christ-6 And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him. 7 Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.

8 Don’t let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding

nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this

world, rather than from Christ. 9 For in Christ lives all the fullness of God in a

human body 10 So you also are complete through your union with Christ, who is the

head over every ruler and authority.

KJV – 2:1-10 21 And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked

works, yet now hath he reconciled22 in the body of his flesh through death, to

present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight:

23 If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from

the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every

creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;

David Guzik Colossians Bible Commentary Notes – Pages 82-89

Answering the Colossian Heresy:

Verse 1: For I want you to know what a great conflict I have for you and those in

Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh.

What a great conflict I have for you: This great conflict was inside Paul. It wasn’t

that Paul fought with others about the Colossian Christians. Paul described his

spiritual warfare and heartfelt care for the Colossians as a great conflict.

For as many as have not seen my face in the flesh: Apparently, Paul had never

visited Colosse himself. Most of the Colossian Christians had never seen his face in

the flesh.

Verse 2-3: That their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, and

attaining to all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the knowledge of

the mystery of God, both of the Father and of Christ, in whom are hidden all the

treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

That their hearts may be encouraged: Paul wanted this because he was concerned

about their enthusiasm. He knew that discouraged, downcast Christians are easy

prey for the world, the flesh and the devil.

Paul knew that their unity came from not only love, but also from the truth, from

both being knit together in love and growing in the understanding and knowledge

of God’s truth.

The true wisdom Paul wanted them to know in Jesus would bring them together,

indeed, knit them together in love-instead of dividing them the way that false

wisdom did.

Great freedom and confidence comes when we come to this full assurance.

The term mystery of God used here, Paul uses the term regarding the character

and person of God-something we could not know unless it was revealed by Him.

Page 24: The Book of Colossians Life Application Bible Study

24

Christ in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. This is an

important idea in Paul’s letter to the Colossians. With this, Paul refuted some of

the bad teaching troubling the Colossian Christians. They were influenced by

teachers who told them to seek the treasures of wisdom and knowledge, but NOT

to seek them in Jesus. Paul wrote, “You will only find all the treasures of wisdom

and knowledge in Jesus. He has them all.” It’s not wrong to seek after wisdom and

knowledge; but we must seek it all IN JESUS.

Gnostics believed that a great mass of elaborate knowledge was necessary for

salvation. Paul wanted all to know that real wisdom was not hidden in secret books

but deposited in Jesus Christ so that ALL can access it. Hidden, does not, however,

mean that they are concealed but rather that they are laid up or stored away as a

treasure.

When Paul describes the truth of God with words like riches and treasures, he

reminds us that God’s truth is precious and worthy of sacrificial seeking.

Verse 4: Now this I say lest anyone should deceive you with persuasive words.

Those who told the Colossians to find wisdom and knowledge apart from the

simplicity of Jesus were very persuasive. The lure of “hidden” and “deep” wisdom

and knowledge can be both strong and deceptive.

Lest anyone should deceive you: It might sound simple, but deceivers are deceivers.

They won’t announce their false doctrine, and it will often be similar enough to the

truth to be dangerous.

Verse 5-7: For though I am absent in the flesh, yet I am with you in spirit, rejoicing

to see your good order and the steadfastness of your faith in Christ. As you have

therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him

and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with

thanksgiving.

I am absent in the flesh, yet I am with you in spirit: Through prayer, Paul genuinely

felt he was among the Colossian Christians in spirit, even though he was absent in

the flesh.

Rejoicing to see your good order: Paul did not see a Colossian church that was

given over to heresy. They were under serious danger, but they were still in good

order and displayed a steadfastness of their faith.

Page 25: The Book of Colossians Life Application Bible Study

25

The simple things of the Christian life provide continual and reliable spiritual fuel for

growth. We always have to be reminded of the things we have been taught.

So, walk in Him, rooted and built up: The metaphors are somewhat mixed, but the

message is clear; be established and keep growing.

Verse 8: Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit,

according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world,

and not according to Christ.

“Cheat you” – is actually, “lead you away as prey”. It also had the ideas of robbing

and plundering. Their goods were the salvation they had received from Christ; and

both the Gentile and Jewish teachers endeavored to deprive them of these, by

perverting their minds, and leading them off from the truths of Christianity.

(Clarke)

Philosophy: Gnosticism, Greek philosophy, local mystery religions and Jewish

mysticism threatened the Colossian Christians. It was high-sounding and “SEEMED”

highly intelligent.

Philosophy originally had a good meaning, “the love of wisdom”, but it used by

Paul in the sense of vain speculation, and with special reference to its being the

name by which the false teachers at Colosse used.

Gnosticism taught that God (as a Perfect Spirit) could not come into direct contact

with the material world. Paul took care to point out that Jesus Is God and He came

in the body of His flesh -Colossians 1:19-22.

Gnosticism taught that since God could not have direct contact with the material

world, that God Himself did not create the world, but He worked through lesser

spirits or angels. Paul took care to show that Jesus was the creator of the world

(Colossians 1:15-16)

Gnosticism and some form of Jewish mysticism greatly esteemed these supported

mediators and considered them angelic beings of a sort. Paul was careful to warn

the Colossians that angels should not be worshipped (Colossians 2:18).

Jewish influence on Christianity emphasized the observance of particular days as

an obligation. Paul took care to say that Christians were not under these

obligations (Colossians 2:16)

Page 26: The Book of Colossians Life Application Bible Study

26

According to the traditions of men: The Colossian heresy promoted itself as

traditional. Paul here warned that the tradition of men has not equal authority to

the word of God.

Many ancient mystery religions thought of the world as a dangerous place,

threatened by spirits or spiritual forces they called elements or elemental forces.

They though one was protected from these dangerous spiritual forces by either

worshipping them or by finding protection under a greater deity or spiritual power

that was superior to these elements.

Verse 9-10: For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; and you are

complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power.

In Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead: This is a dramatic, airtight

declaration of the full Deity of Jesus. Since all the fullness of the Godhead dwells in

Jesus. He cannot be a halfway God or junior god.

Godhead: Paul is declaring that in the Son there dwells all the fullness of absolute

Godhead; they were no mere rays of divine glory which gilded Him, lighting up His

Person for a season and with splendor nor His own; but He was, and is, absolute

and perfect God.

All the fullness of the Godhead bodily: A false teaching related to this in the early

church was called Docetism, which claimed that Jesus had no actual human body;

He only seemed to have one. Another false teaching was called Cerinthianism, and

it said that Jesus the Man, was separate and distinct from the “Spirit of Christ”.

Head of all principality and power: In many New Testament passages this describes

ranks of angelic beings, either faithful or fallen angelic beings (Romans 8:38,

Ephesians 1:21, Ephesians 3:10, Ephesians 6:12). Therefore, Paul here declares

Jesus’ authority over all spirit beings. The false teaching among the Colossian

Christians emphasized these lesser spirit beings, but Paul makes it clear that Jesus

is far above them.

Titled: Debt Cancelled & Darkness Conquered at the Cross – Chapter 2:11-15

Lesson #6 - (NLT) 11 When you came to Christ, you were “circumcised,” but not by a physical

procedure. Christ performed a spiritual circumcision—the cutting away of your

sinful nature. 12 For you were buried with Christ when you were baptized. And with

him you were raised to new life because you trusted the mighty power of God,

who raised Christ from the dead.

13 You were dead because of your sins and because your sinful nature was not yet

cut away. Then God made you alive with Christ, for he forgave all our sins. 14 He

canceled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the

cross. 15 In this way, he disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed

them publicly by his victory over them on the cross.

KJV-2:11-15 11 In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in

putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:

12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith

of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.13 And you, being

dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together

with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;

14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was

contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;15 And having

spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing

over them in it.

Video #7 Titled (calcarysb.com) – Don’t Be Cheated – Chapter 2:16-23

Lesson # 7 – (NLT) 16 So don’t let anyone condemn you for what you eat or drink, or for not

celebrating certain holy days or new moon ceremonies or Sabbaths. 17 For these

rules are only shadows of the reality yet to come. And Christ himself is that

reality. 18 Don’t let anyone condemn you by insisting on pious self-denial or the

worship of angels, saying they have had visions about these things. Their sinful

minds have made them proud, 19 and they are not connected to Christ, the head of

the body. For he holds the whole body together with its joints and ligaments, and it

grows as God nourishes it.

20 You have died with Christ, and he has set you free from the spiritual powers of

this world. So why do you keep on following the rules of the world, such

as, 21 “Don’t handle! Don’t taste! Don’t touch!”? 22 Such rules are mere human

teachings about things that deteriorate as we use them. 23 These rules may seem

wise because they require strong devotion, pious self-denial, and severe bodily

discipline. But they provide no help in conquering a person’s evil desires.

KJV- 2:16-23 16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday,

or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:17 Which are a shadow of things to

come; but the body is of Christ.

18 Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping

of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by

his fleshly mind,19 And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and

bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the

increase of God.

20 Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as

though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances,21 (Touch not; taste not;

handle not;22 Which all are to perish with the using;) after the commandments and

doctrines of men?

23 Which things have indeed a shew of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and

neglecting of the body: not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh.

Video #8 Titled (calcarysb.com) – Teaching – Chapter 3:1-11

Lesson #8 - (NLT)

Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand. 2 Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth. 3 For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 And when Christ, who is your life, is revealed to the whole world, you will share in all his glory.

5 So put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you. Have nothing to do

with sexual immorality, impurity, lust, and evil desires. Don’t be greedy, for a

greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world. 6 Because of these

sins, the anger of God is coming. 7 You used to do these things when your life was

still part of this world. 8 But now is the time to get rid of anger, rage, malicious

behavior, slander, and dirty language.

KJV- 3:1-11

If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ

sitteth on the right hand of God.2 Set your affection on things above, not on things

on the earth.

3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.4 When Christ, who is our

life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.5 Mortify therefore

your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate

affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:

6 For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of

disobedience:7 In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them.

8 But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy

communication out of your mouth.9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put

off the old man with his deeds;10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed

in knowledge after the image of him that created him:

11 Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision,

Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all.

9 Don’t lie to each other, for you have stripped off your old sinful nature and all its

wicked deeds. 10 Put on your new nature and be renewed as you learn to know

your Creator and become like him. 11 In this new life, it doesn’t matter if you are a

Jew or a Gentile circumcised or uncircumcised, barbaric, uncivilized, slave, or free.

Christ is all that matters, and he lives in all of us.

12 Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves

with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. 13 Make

allowance for each other’s faults and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember,

the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. 14 Above all, clothe yourselves

with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony. 15 And let the peace that

comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called

to live in peace. And always be thankful.

16 Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives. Teach and counsel

each other with all the wisdom he gives. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs

to God with thankful hearts. 17 And whatever you do or say, do it as a

representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father.

KJV 3:12-17 12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies,

kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;13 Forbearing one another,

and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ

forgave you, so also do ye.

14 And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.15 And

let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one

body; and be ye thankful.16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom;

teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,

singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

Instructions for Christian Households-18 Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting for those who belong to the Lord.19 Husbands, love your wives and never treat them harshly.20 Children, always obey your parents, for this pleases the Lord. 21 Fathers do not aggravate your children, or they will become discouraged.

22 Slaves obey your earthly masters in everything you do. Try to please them all the

time, not just when they are watching you. Serve them sincerely because of your

reverent fear of the Lord. 23 Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were

working for the Lord rather than for people. 24 Remember that the Lord will give

you an inheritance as your reward, and that the Master you are serving is

Christ.[e] 25 But if you do what is wrong, you will be paid back for the wrong you

have done. For God has no favorites. 4:1 Masters, be just and fair to your slaves.

Remember that you also have a Master—in heaven.

KJV -3:18-25 & 4:1 18 Wives submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the

Lord.19 Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them.

20 Children obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the

Lord.21 Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged.

22 Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with

eyeservice, as men pleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God;23 And

whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;

24 Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye

serve the Lord Christ.

25 But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and

there is no respect of persons. 4 Masters give unto your servants that which is just

and equal; knowing that ye also have a Master in heaven.

Video #11 Titled (calcarysb.com) – The People God Uses– Chapter 4:2-6

Lesson #11 – (NLT) 2 Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a thankful heart. 3 Pray for us,

too, that God will give us many opportunities to speak about his mysterious plan

concerning Christ. That is why I am here in chains. 4 Pray that I will proclaim this

message as clearly as I should.

5 Live wisely among those who are not believers and make the most of every

opportunity. 6 Let your conversation be gracious and attractive so that you will

have the right response for everyone.

KJV-4:2-6 2 Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving;3 Withal praying also

for us, that God would open unto us a door of utterance, to speak the mystery of

Christ, for which I am also in bonds:

4 That I may make it manifest, as I ought to speak.5 Walk in wisdom toward them

that are without, redeeming the time.6 Let your speech be always with grace,

seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.

Paul’s Final Instructions and Greetings-7 Tychicus will give you a full report about how I am getting along. He is a beloved brother and faithful helper who serves with me in the Lord’s work. 8 I have sent him to you for this very purpose—to let you know how we are doing and to encourage you. 9 I am also sending Onesimus, a faithful and beloved brother, one of your own people. He and Tychicus will tell you everything that’s happening here.

10 Aristarchus, who is in prison with me, sends you his greetings, and so does Mark,

Barnabas’s cousin. As you were instructed before, make Mark welcome if he

comes your way. 11 Jesus (the one we call Justus) also sends his greetings. These

are the only Jewish believers among my co-workers; they are working with me

here for the Kingdom of God. And what a comfort they have been!

12 Epaphras, a member of your own fellowship and a servant of Christ Jesus, sends

you his greetings. He always prays earnestly for you, asking God to make you

strong and perfect, fully confident that you are following the whole will of God. 13 I

can assure you that he prays hard for you and also for the believers in Laodicea

and Hierapolis.

14 Luke, the beloved doctor, sends his greetings, and so does Demas. 15 Please give

my greetings to our brothers and sisters at Laodicea, and to Nympha and the

church that meets in her house.16 After you have read this letter, pass it on to the

church at Laodicea so they can read it, too. And you should read the letter I wrote

to them.17 And say to Archippus, “Be sure to carry out the ministry the Lord gave

you.”

18 HERE IS MY GREETING IN MY OWN HANDWRITING—PAUL. Remember my chains.

May God’s grace be with you.

KJV – 4:7-18 7 All my state shall Tychicus declare unto you, who is a beloved brother, and a

faithful minister and fellow servant in the Lord:

8 Whom I have sent unto you for the same purpose, that he might know your

estate, and comfort your hearts;9 With Onesimus, a faithful and beloved brother,

who is one of you. They shall make known unto you all things which are done here.

10 Aristarchus my fellow prisoner saluteth you, and Marcus, sister's son to

Barnabas, (touching whom ye received commandments: if he come unto you,

receive him;)

11 And Jesus, which is called Justus, who are of the circumcision. These only are my

fellow workers unto the kingdom of God, which have been a comfort unto me.

12 Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ, saluteth you, always labouring

fervently for you in prayers, that ye may stand perfect and complete in all the will

of God.

13 For I bear him record, that he hath a great zeal for you, and them that are in

Laodicea, and them in Hierapolis.14 Luke, the beloved physician, and Demas, greet

you.15 Salute the brethren which are in Laodicea, and Nymphas, and the church

which is in his house.

16 And when this epistle is read among you, cause that it be read also in the church

of the Laodiceans; and that ye likewise read the epistle from Laodicea.

17 And say to Archippus, take heed to the ministry which thou hast received in the

Lord, that thou fulfil it.18 The salutation by the hand of me Paul. Remember my

bonds. Grace be with you. Amen.

through mine as I come before you, asking you to help me commit to this new bible study, I so

miss our time of fellowship. All the distractions, good or not so good, have kept me from this

Chapter #1 - “Faithful Service”

Day #1

Colossians 1: 1-2

1 This letter is from Paul, chosen by the will of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus, and from our

brother Timothy.2 We are writing to God's holy people in the city of Colosse, who are faithful

brothers and sisters in Christ. May God our Father give you grace and peace.

Article from Internet: Called, chosen and faithful- These three words actually define who the saints of God are. Each of these words denotes a different meaning, and it is important to understand what it means to be “called, chosen and faithful.”

The called-. The Church consists of those who are called (invited) by God to understand His plan, to repent of their sins and to receive His Holy Spirit. It is important to understand that one’s calling is an act of God! Only He calls (invites) someone. That is quite evident in John 6:44 when Jesus told the crowds, “No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him.”

Paul very clearly stated the responsibilities of the called: “Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful” (Colossians 3:12-15).

The called and chosen must be faithful! They must continue to actively believe, obey and rely on God. The called and chosen will need to faithfully endure, both in good and in bad times.

(bfc-If you had any warm fuzzy feelings when you first read the definition of chosen -handpicked and favored of God – you learn very quickly, as you continue this study, there is a price to pay for being handpicked and favored. You must keep on keeping on, even when the warm fuzzies are gone and you are walking only by faith).

“Many are called, but few are chosen”- This phrase was used by Jesus after He spoke a parable in which someone was invited to a wedding but did not have on a wedding garment (Matthew 22:11-14). The lesson of the parable is that when someone is called by God, that person has a responsibility to respond to the calling and make spiritual changes in his or her life.

Page 52: The Book of Colossians Life Application Bible Study

52

DAY #2

➢ How do we know when or if we are called to serve Jesus, and in what capacity?

The simplest way I can explain this is: you just know! I say, you will know in your “knower”.

You will sense it to be a strong TRUTH inside your heart and mind. It will be a constant drive,

passion, unction, that gives you determination and commitment to keep going, even if your

feelings tell you otherwise (when those warm fuzzies are gone).

You will sense the Holy Spirit of God, prompting you in certain directions with the faith He

has put inside of you; you will receive scriptures that will jump off the page and confirm that

you are on the right track. You will have peace when everything around you may be stormy,

you will know! You will have doors open no man can shut and find favor with those you

meet daily.

You may have others try to distract you or discourage you, but you will have the fortitude to

keep going forward, even when you’re not sure what that “forward direction” may be. With

each step you take, you will know that God and His Holy Spirit is with you, and you learn to

trust Him more and more with every step you take.

Day #3

➢ Paul wrote to the holy people (Christians), how can we share the good news of Jesus and

His grace if we don’t do so in a written manner? (bfc) This is a perfect day and time

for me to be able to answer this one ☺☺. If anyone knows me, they know I have a

passion to share Gods Word, via the bible studies through YouTube, and my cards and

crafts.

God has provided a small room at my home, “The Vintage Encouragement Room” for

creating and working on crafts and bible studies. This room idea started in October 2016 and

keeps growing; it has evolved into more of an outreach than I had ever dreamed of. Each day

God directs me with new ideas and ways to share, promote, plan and grow.

The room has gone from a creation space, to a small Christian Gift Shop – It is a work in

progress just like I am. Last week was one of those weeks where the Holy Spirit was helping

me with new ideas on how to make better signage, so people know what this is all about.

That may sound simplistic (crazy) or not real to some of you, but God does speak to us and

He is the one that gives us ideas and dreams and visions for His Glory; my mind goes all the

time. God and His Holy Spirit really speaks to me with ideas when I am driving to and from

work. Sometimes I get new ideas and can’t wait to get home and implement them! Thank

God, my husband is supportive of all this, he doesn’t see much of me these days, I’m at work

or in my little room or resting. Ask the Holy Spirit to give you the grace, courage and boldness

to share your faith and His Grace with someone today and every day, He will do it.

Page 53: The Book of Colossians Life Application Bible Study

53

Day #4

How do we know Gods will for our lives?

I think this is a big question for a lot of us. We become a Christian/Saved Person/Born Again Person, when we confess our sins to Jesus Christ, the Son of the living God, and ask Jesus to forgive us of all our sins and come into our hearts and save us. (Romans 10:9-10).

I don't believe you will really understand or know God's will for your life until you have spent time with Jesus in prayer and bible reading/study and put yourself under some good teaching/preaching, in a church that shares sound and biblical doctrines.

When you commit to doing these things, God will honor your faithfulness and time. It takes time to learn how to become like Jesus, it’s a process, just like a baby must learn how to crawl then walk, we, in a since, must do the same.

Don't get discouraged and don't think you must change overnight and be super saint. Don't fall into a state of condemnation when you mess up and be careful of others putting their convictions upon you. God made us all unique and has a purpose for all of us. Being saved is a lifestyle full of ongoing changes, and we must learn to accept the fact, there will be changes in our lives, but God will give us GRACE and strength and direction. I find obedience = blessings.

Day #5

“How can we be faithful in service to Jesus”?

Faithful – what does that mean? Service, what exactly is that? Let’s look up both words today. Faithful-any loyal and steadfast following-faithful-reliable; worthy of trust-consistent with reality -a group of people who adhere to a common faith and habitually attend a given church-steadfast in affection or allegiance. - Service-work done by one person or group that

benefits another; service-an act of help or assistance. -service, religious -the act of public worship following prescribed rules.

How do these words/definitions speak to you today? It never ceases to amaze me, how “one word” can speak such volumes. Wisdom and knowledge come from learning and studying, which can in effect, change our entire attitude towards what the day or weeks ahead may bring.

When I read the definitions for faithful, the ones that stood out to me were, loyal, steadfast AND habitually attending church. To be transparent and honest this morning is a little tough for me. I am in a place in my life where attending church faithfully has been lacking. For the past three weeks, I have not attended services because my husband has not felt well. I know that is not an excuse for not faithfully attending, as I could get ready and go alone.

Page 54: The Book of Colossians Life Application Bible Study

54

It can be very easy to “justify” not going to church and even be busy at home (in my Vintage Encouragement Room for Salt Shakin Sister Ministry). I know Gods Word tells us not to forsake the assembling of ourselves together. We NEED to attend church, we NEED the fellowship, we NEED to hear what God has to say through the pastor and we NEED to obey the Word of God by our attendance.

We often hear someone say, “I don’t need to go to church, me and God have our own thing going on”. All I am going to say about that is, this won’t work! You will get into some major spiritual problems when you fall out of fellowship with other Christians; people who are also striving to be faithful and live for Jesus.

You quit going to church, then you quit reading and studying the bible, then you quit wanting to hang around other Christians because you may get under conviction about some sins that have been piling up in your life. Then you start doing things you know are sinful, things that you never would have done when you were faithfully serving Jesus. Sin creeps in and builds a wall between you and Jesus. You don’t hear that still small voice anymore; your heart is getting calloused and hard; this is not where you want to be. Sin has a price tag; do you really want to pay it?

When I looked up the definitions for the two words in our study question this morning, I had no idea we would end up here. If you are still with us and you have not quit reading, my prayer for you is, that God’s Holy Spirit convict you and call you back into His Grace and Loving Arms of forgiveness. He’s waiting and loves you!!

Day #6

“Prayer and Thankfulness”

Colossians 1:3-5

3 We always pray for you, and we give thanks to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. 4 For we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and your love for all of God's people, 5 which come from your confident hope of what God has reserved for you in heaven. You have had this expectation ever since you first heard the truth of the Good News.

❖ Do you know of anyone that is or has been praying for you? If so, who is it and how long

have they been praying for you?

❖ Can you give thanks to God for your life, even in the midst of the good or bad days you

may be having?

❖ Do you have a personal relationship (Faith in Christ Jesus) with Jesus? Yes

❖ What does love really mean, and how is your "love walk"?

❖ Do you have confidence and hope, that when you die, you will enter Heaven? If your

answer is yes - then you and I have the expectation since we first heard the truth about

Jesus. We received this when we asked Him to come into our hearts and save us. Eternal

Life awaits us!

*****************************************************************************

Page 55: The Book of Colossians Life Application Bible Study

55

Do you know of anyone that is or has been praying for you? If so, who is it and how long have

they been praying for you? I know that my husband prays for me every day, even though,

honestly, I don't think about him doing it. I believe, between his prayers, my parent’s prayers

(and mine), my days are a lot safer on the highways and byways to and from Hondo Texas

and San Antonio. I know I have a few friends that are faithful to pray for me, but I really don't

have a large number of people praying for me.

If you happen to be one of the less fortunate souls that feels left out and not prayed for, don't

despair, if you are saved Jesus is praying for you and watching over you every day.

The bible tells us, we should encourage ourselves; we can't depend on others prayers as much as

we can our own. We must have our own personal conversations / prayers with Jesus. The bible

also tells us he sends ministering angels to us. I don't leave my home in the morning without first

asking Jesus to send His ministering angels all around my home, car, family and associates.

Can you give thanks to God for your life, even in the midst of the good or bad days you may

be having? Yes, I can, and I am ever so thankful that God's grace has been bountiful to me

and I don't take this grand and healthy season of my life for granted!! I do my best to wake

up each new day with praise and thanks on my lips and in my heart. Yes, I have my days just

like you, when I am not so chipper and full of enthusiasm and joy for my Jesus,

I do my best to have an attitude of praise and thankfulness IN all circumstances; I'm certainly

not thankful FOR a lot of things that may come my way. Oftentimes, I just flat need God to

give me an attitude adjustment! Amen and Amen!

What does love really mean, and how is your "love walk"? Let's look it up. The most spectacular, indescribable, deep euphoric feeling for someone. Fondness, tenderness, worship, passion, adore, and charity. But what does love really mean when the Emotions are not warm and fuzzy???? What does the biblical "agape love" mean?

Agape Love

This is the Greek word for love at its ultimate. Agape love is not like a brotherly love or

a love between a husband and a wife. It is the most self-sacrificing love that there is. This type of

love is the love that God has for His own children. This type of love is what was displayed on the

cross by Jesus Christ. In John 3:16 it is written that “God so loved (agapao) the world that He gave

His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.”

Agape love is that which is always associated with the love of God and rarely does it occur when

it involves one person in relations with another. The Greek word agape was hardly ever used in

Greek-speaking societies but in the New Testament, it occurs 320 times.

Page 56: The Book of Colossians Life Application Bible Study

56

The last part of our questions asks, "how is our love walk"?....... I don't know what your answer looks like, but I fall way below the "agape love" that Jesus expects and commands us to walk in. Every day is a new day, new sin, new convictions, new confessions and constant yearning and striving to love and be like Jesus, how about you? Thank you for your love and grace Jesus! Bfc

Day #7

Colossians 1:6-9 “10 Ways”

6 This same Good News that came to you is going out all over the world. It is bearing fruit

everywhere by changing lives, just as it changed your lives from the day you first heard and

understood the truth about God's wonderful grace. 7 You learned about the Good News from

Epaphras, our beloved co-worker. He is Christ's faithful servant, and he is helping us on your

behalf. 8 He has told us about the love for others that the Holy Spirit has given you.9 So we have

not stopped praying for you since we first heard about you.

We ask God to give you complete knowledge of his will and to give you

spiritual wisdom and understanding.

This is going to be a GOOD lesson!! A lot of yummy food to feast upon – let’s dive in and feast

upon the Word and see what the Holy Spirit wants to help us with; Father let us “apply” our

learning to our lives and be what and who you called us to be, amen.

1. Good News – Jesus and His Holy Spirit will show me how I am supposed to be spreading His Word all

over the world. (Salt Shakin Sister Outreach-The Vintage Encouragement Room)

2. Bearing fruit “everywhere” = changing lives. What exactly does bearing fruit mean? I think a brief

explanation for this comes from one scripture: Galatians 5:23 – For the fruit of the Spirit is: Love, Joy,

Peace, Patience, Goodness, Kindness, Faithfulness and Self Control. If we ask Jesus to fill us with these

characteristics every day, it will and can change us and others.

3. My life was changed when I first heard the truth of Jesus Christ. I once was lost, but now am found,

was blind, but now I see; saved by grace, kept by grace, and walking by grace. GRACE! My desires and

thinking about things have and will continue to change.

4. I received God’s Grace and started understanding His Word after I received Jesus as my Savior. Before

I was saved, I didn’t enjoy reading God’s Word like I do now, it was like reading a novel about

someone else’s life, it did not speak to my heart in a personal way, as it does now.

5. I am ever “learning” how to be a Christ like follower. It’s a “Process” – it takes time to learn how I

should follow Jesus and obey His commands.

6. The Holy Spirit is always helping me and working on my behalf.

7. The Holy Spirit fills me with fresh love each day, when I take time to be still and listen to Him.

8. I will continue to pray for others that Jesus has laid on my heart.

9. I will expect to receive Gods knowledge, spiritual wisdom, understanding and direction as to what His

will / plan for my life is. This is so cool! There are so many times that the Holy Spirit will just “drop” a

thought or answer into my heart; when I act upon it, I find it to be the answer I needed and it helps

me complete something I am working on.

10. In Him all things are possible – show me your way Lord Jesus – amen and amen.

Page 57: The Book of Colossians Life Application Bible Study

57

Day #8

“Benefits from Jesus”

Colossians 1:10-14

10 Then the way you live will always honor and please the Lord, and your lives will produce every

kind of good fruit. All the while, you will grow as you learn to know God better and better.11 We

also pray that you will be strengthened with all his glorious power so you will have all the

endurance and patience you need. May you be filled with joy, 12 always thanking the Father. He

has enabled you to share in the inheritance that belongs to his people, who live in the light. 13

For he has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his

dear Son, 14 who purchased our freedom and forgave our sins.

Day “8” has eight grand and glorious benefits for us:

1. Living for Jesus always gives Him the honor and glory He justly deserves.

2. Living for Jesus will produce every kind of good fruit in our lives and others (Fruit of the

Holy Spirit Is-Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Goodness, Kindness, Faithfulness and Self-

Control).

3. Living for Jesus keeps us growing, learning, and knowing Him better and better every day.

4. Living for Jesus will give us all the strength, endurance, and patience when we need it.

5. Living for Jesus will fill us with joy unspeakable and full of glory.

6. Living for Jesus gives us a thankful heart toward Him and our Heavenly Father.

7. Living for Jesus rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and keeps us free from satans

schemes and traps.

8. Living for Jesus has given us freedom and forgiveness for all our sins.

I have to share something this morning; I am so thankful to Jesus and give Him all the glory for

the favor and blessings He has bestowed upon my life. Count my blessings, name them one by

one; Isn’t there a song by that name? Yes, I do believe there is and I need to share those words

with you right now, then I will count my blessings and share them with you.

https://youtu.be/9fMjgS4vu4o

COUNT YOUR MANY BLESSINGS

1. When upon life’s billows you are tempest-tossed, When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,

Count your many blessings, name them one by one, And it will surprise you what the Lord has done.

o Count your blessings, name them one by one,. [*And it will surprise you what the Lord has done.

Page 58: The Book of Colossians Life Application Bible Study

58

2. Are you ever burdened with a load of care? Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear?

Count your many blessings, every doubt will fly, And you will keep singing as the days go by.

3. When you look at others with their lands and gold, Think that Christ has promised you His wealth untold;

Count your many blessings—*money cannot buy [*wealth can never buy] Your reward in heaven, nor your home on high.

4. So, amid the conflict whether great or small, Do not be discouraged, God is over all;

Count your many blessings, angels will attend, Help and comfort give you to your journey’s end.

Counting My Blessings, naming them one by one (I think I will only have time for a few, I will run out of time and paper before I can count all of them, THANK YOU JESUS)!!!:

Recently we had a major windstorm that destroyed our metal carport and thousands of $ damage to my husband’s truck along with some hail damage to the house. God will test your faith when things like this happen. We can moan and groan or stand on the faith and trust that Jesus will make it all come out for our good.

This is NOT easy, but it can be done when you know the Word of God and you stay in touch with Jesus and “Fight the good Fight”; “Cast down every vain imagination and take every thought captive to the obedience of Jesus Christ”; “No weapon formed against me shall prosper”. I have been hearing several verses in my soul the last two days, some I have not even read for a long time. In addition to some of the verses the Holy Spirit has brought to my memory, I hear songs of praise when I awake in the morning and throughout the day, now that’s a BLESSING in and of itself!

Yesterday while sitting still and being quiet and praying, the Holy Spirit brought to my heart the verse: “No weapon formed against me shall prosper”. How many times have you heard that verse? How many times have you quoted that verse? I have heard it hundreds of times and said it probably, almost just as much during my Christian walk.

The morning when this verse came to my heart, I heard something so profound yet so simple, something I have never heard before. “No weapon formed against me” -the weapon formed against me (Wayne and I) was the windstorm satan sent our way along with the damages done to property. Satan meant harm and discouragement to our spirits. The later portion of the scripture; “shall prosper” spoke to me, that I will prosper, I will come out ahead and be blessed in the end. God will get all the glory, and that is what I give to Him this very day. Later that day the insurance company called and gave us a final number for repairing all the damages.

Page 59: The Book of Colossians Life Application Bible Study

59

Thank God we had good insurance. Thank God for my job and health, so I can pay for the insurance. Thank God for the favor of those involved in all the transactions to get everything repaired. Thank God for coming out AHEAD and even better off than before the storm. Thank God we get a new carport.

Thank God Wayne’s truck was fixed and got a completely NEW PAINT JOB and it is in better shape now than before the storm. Thank God we are getting our roof repaired and the entire house repainted. I give God all the glory and thank Him for the weapon satan tried to use for bad and harm that God turned it around and we shall prosper, have prospered! Amen and Amen.

Day #9

“Trinity”

Colossians 1:15-17

15 Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He (Jesus) existed before anything was created

and is supreme over all creation, 16 for through him (Jesus), God created everything in the

heavenly realms and on earth. He (God) made the things we can see and the things we can't

see—such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world. Everything was

created through him (God and Jesus-the Trinity Godhead) and for him.17 He (God and Jesus- the

Trinity Godhead) existed before anything else, and he holds all creation together.

BFC NOTES: If I am understanding the scriptures above, I see the person of “Jesus” being

referenced as the person spoken of after “He and Him” in verses 15 & 16 above. I have read,

and re read these verses, and it appears to me that God is saying Jesus existed “before” anything

was created AND that “through” Jesus, God created everything. Is this accurate? YES and amen!

We see here, the Trinity: Father God, Son Jesus and the Holy Spirit.

Summary of our verses for today:

➢ Christ is the visible image of the invisible God

➢ God and Jesus existed before anything was created.

➢ God and Jesus made the things we can see and the things we can’t see.

➢ Everything was created through and for God and Jesus.

In the beginning was the WORD, the word was with God and the Word was God.

In the beginning was the WORD, the word was with Jesus and the Word was Jesus.

Day #10

“Jesus - from the Beginning of Time”

Colossians 1:18-20

18 Christ is also the head of the church, which is his body. He is the beginning, supreme over all

who rise from the dead. So, he is first in everything.19 For God in all his fullness was pleased to

live in Christ, 20 and through him God reconciled everything to himself. He made peace with

everything in heaven and on earth; Christ’s blood on the cross.

➢ Jesus is the head of the church

➢ The church is the body

➢ Jesus is the beginning

➢ Jesus is supreme over all

➢ Jesus died and was risen for all sinners

➢ God is Jesus in the flesh

➢ God was pleased in all His fullness to live in Jesus Christ

➢ Jesus shed His blood on the cross

➢ The Trinity- God the Father, God the Son Jesus and God the Holy Spirit.

➢ Genesis 1:26 Then God said, "Let us make human beings in our image, to be like

ourselves (bfc note: plural- three-person Trinity from the beginning of time).

➢ Genesis 1:27-God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God, he

created them; male and female he created them.

Day # 11

“Totally Faultless”- Colossians 1:21-22 This includes you who were once far away from God. You

were His enemies, separated from Him by your evil thoughts and actions. 22 Yet now He has

reconciled you to Himself through the death of Christ in His physical body. As a result, He has

brought you into His own presence, and you are holy and blameless as you stand before Him

without a single fault.

Shouting Ground! Praise you Jesus! Thank You, Abba Father! Salvation and standing blameless

without a single fault! I can’t fathom this, not really. To be in Gods eyes as being faultless; with

all the things, I think and say that are not faultless in my eyes nor others. WOW and WOW!

❖ I was far away from God before I accepted Jesus as my Savior.

❖ I was an enemy to God because of my sinful thoughts and actions.

❖ NOW I am reconciled to Jesus because of His death on the cross.

❖ God brought me into His presence through His Son, Jesus.

❖ I AM holy and blameless now as I come to Jesus and God.

❖ I am standing before God faultless, clean, white as snow, FREE from guilt and

condemnations satan tries to throw at me.

Day #12

“Stand Your Ground”

Colossians 1:23

23 But you must continue to believe this truth and stand firmly in it. Don't drift away from the

assurance you received when you heard the Good News. The Good News has been preached all

over the world, and I, Paul, have been appointed as God's servant to proclaim it.

❖ Continue to believe in God’s Word and the fact that we are holy and blameless, as we

stand before Him; saved by GRACE, and daily growing in His wisdom and knowledge.

❖ Stand firm in your faith in Jesus and shake some salt (share your testimony).

❖ Don’t drift away from God’s convictions and standards for your life.

❖ Hold on to the assurance of your salvation and what Gods Word tells you.

❖ Gods Good News is available in many resources; The Word, The Internet, Videos,

YouTube, CD’s, Women Bible Teachers, Sunday School Teachers, Pastors and more.

❖ We are all appointed to serve Jesus with all our heart, soul, and mind, and to proclaim

and share Him with everyone.

Day #13

Crucify that flesh!

Colossians 1:24-27

24 I am glad when I suffer for you in my body, for I am participating in the sufferings of Christ

that continue for his body, the church. 25 God has given me the responsibility of serving his

church by proclaiming his entire message to you. 26 This message was kept secret for centuries

and generations past, but now it has been revealed to God's people. 27 For God wanted them to

know that the riches and glory of Christ are for you Gentiles, too. And this is the secret: Christ

lives in you. This gives you assurance of sharing his glory.

Today’s verses are the apostle’s personal words that were applicable to his lifetime and

situations; we are going to share it in a way that will be applicable to you and I, in the time and

day we live in. Let’s see what we can do to apply the word today:

1. Seek the help of the Holy Spirit when we need to suffer in the flesh with a right attitude for

Jesus.

2. Participating with the Holy Spirit when denying the fleshy desires.

3. Service and ministry within the body of Christ; serving in the church you attend, not being a

pew potato.

4. Taking our responsibility to serve within the body of Christ, the Church; find out what your

gifts for Jesus is and jump in there and help out, there is always work that needs to be done

at your church.

Page 62: The Book of Colossians Life Application Bible Study

62

5. If you have a gift to teach, talk to your pastor and start sharing the message under the

authority of your church.

6. Don’t keep the message of Jesus a secret, don’t be a closet Christian, share your faith and

salvation testimony with others. The more you share your faith, and what Jesus has done for

you, the easier and bolder you will get.

7. God’s Holy Word – the Bible reveals all the wisdom, knowledge, direction, and grace we need

to walk through each and every day; good days and not so good days.

8. Thank God, the Word of God is not a secret! Shake some salt. Share the Word. Christ lives in

you and gives you daily assurance – share His glory and grace.

Day #14

“Warning-Warning-Warning”

Colossians 1:28-29

28 So we tell others about Christ, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all the wisdom

God has given us. We want to present them to God, perfect in their relationship to Christ. 29

That's why I work and struggle so hard, depending on Christ's mighty power that

works within me.

➢ Tell others about your Jesus.

➢ Warn others about living in the last days-Warning,Warning,Warning!

➢ Point everyone to the life-giving Word of God and the way to grace and forgiveness.

➢ All wisdom is found in the word.

➢ Salvation is free and available for anyone ready to receive it.

➢ I am working for Jesus and I have the hope I will see souls in heaven from the seeds I

have planted and the salt I have shakin.

➢ Work hard for Jesus-lean on the strength and power He provides.

Day #15

“Hear my Heart Today”

Colossians 2:1-5

I want you to know how much I have agonized for you and for the church at Laodicea, and for

many other believers who have never met me personally. 2. I want them to be encouraged and

knit together by strong ties of love. I want them to have complete confidence that they

understand God's mysterious plan, which is Christ himself. 3. In him lie hidden all the treasures

of wisdom and knowledge.4 I am telling you this so no one will deceive you with well-crafted

arguments. 5 For though I am far away from you, my heart is with you. And I rejoice that you are

living as you should and that your faith in Christ is strong.

Page 63: The Book of Colossians Life Application Bible Study

63

In today’s study, we hear the heart of Paul and his concern and passion for the church in

Laodicea, let’s see how we can “apply” this to our day and time.

➢ Paul agonized for the church – I can hear the heart of a pastor or teacher that has the

responsibility of sharing the gospel and serving the people they minister to.

➢ When God calls us to a certain ministry, He also equips and gives us determination, drive,

passion and the special gifts to serve with His heart. We are driven to press on and fight

the good fight regardless of the storms around us, the Holy Spirit lifts us up and keeps us

going; He is the one that helps us when we are tempted to call it quits and when we get

totally frustrated or burned out.

➢ Be encouraged and knit together by strong ties of love; stay in fellowship with other

Christians.

➢ Understanding God’s mysterious plan comes from studying the Word.

➢ In God, lies all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. You want to know Jesus better;

the word works – work the word; apply what it says to your life.

➢ When you know what the Bible says, you will know false doctrine and teachings when

you hear them. Just because something “sounds” godly, does not mean it is the gospel

truth- watch out, satan is a deceiver and can appear as an angel of light. John 10:10 says

that he came only to steal, kill, and destroy, but Jesus came to give us life and life more

abundant.

➢ My heart is with you as you read todays lesson; it’s my prayer, that God would speak to

all of us and help us walk and live out what His word says to us. God’s Word has purpose

and it will accomplish what He meant it to, it will not return void.

➢ Isaiah 55:11-12 – So is my word that goes out from my mouth; it will not return to me

empty but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.

➢ Rejoice and be strong in your faith in Jesus Christ, Amen.

Day #16

“Deep Roots” - Colossians 2:6-7

6 And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him. 7 Let

your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow

strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.

➢ Do you know Jesus as your personal Savior? You can – Let’s look at some verses that

would be help you or someone you’ve been praying for, to become a

child of God:

God said in Isaiah 55:11 “My word that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void,

But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it” I love

this verse, it motivates me to keep on shakin salt and sowing seeds - ministering to women, via

the cards, crafts, and teaching lessons on our websites (www.saltshakinsister.simplesite.com and

We just need to be faithful and do our part, and the Holy Spirit of God will do the rest.

Page 64: The Book of Colossians Life Application Bible Study

64

➢ Now continue to follow Jesus by obeying the Word of God.

➢ Let your roots grow down into Him – growth takes time! Start today, set aside some time

for Jesus, be still and get to know Him through prayer and bible study.

➢ Let your life be built upon the Rock-Jesus.

➢ Your faith will become strong in all His truths and wisdom.

➢ Doing all the above will give you a heart that overflows with thankfulness.

Day #17

“Don’t allow yourself to be captured-Be on Guard!”

Colossians 2:8-10

9. Don't let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that

come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from

Christ. 9 For in Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body. 10 So you also are

complete through your union with Christ, who is the head over every ruler and authority.

Message Version: --Watch out for people who try to dazzle you with big words and intellectual

double-talk. They want to drag you off into endless arguments that never amount to anything.

They spread their ideas through the empty traditions of human beings and the empty

superstitions of spirit beings. But that’s not the way of Christ. Everything of God gets expressed in

him, so you can see and hear him clearly. You don’t need a telescope, a microscope, or a

horoscope to realize the fullness of Christ, and the emptiness of the universe without him. When

you come to him, that fullness comes together for you, too. His power extends over everything.

➢ Watch out for people who try to dazzle you with big words and double-talk.

➢ Don’t argue religion- speak with grace, humility, and Gods love.

➢ Beware of false teachers and preachers-they spread their ideas from their own human

intellect; it is not coming from the wisdom and knowledge of the one and only true God.

➢ Stay away from horoscopes and readers.

➢ When you become a Christian you have all you need; the Father, Son and Holy Spirit

indwells you, and as you draw near to Jesus, He will draw near to you; He will keep you

from satans tricks, lies, and deceivers.

➢ You will know in your spirit when you see or hear something that “appears or sounds

godly” but IS NOT!

Page 65: The Book of Colossians Life Application Bible Study

65

Day #18

“Come on in, the water is Crystal Clear Now”

Colossians 2:11-13

11 When you came to Christ, you were "circumcised," but not by a physical procedure. Christ

performed a spiritual circumcision—the cutting away of your sinful nature. 12 For you were

buried with Christ when you were baptized. And with him you were raised to new life because

you trusted the mighty power of God, who raised Christ from the dead.13 You were dead

because of your sins and because your sinful nature was not yet cut away. Then God made you

alive with Christ, for he forgave all our sins.

➢ When we came to Jesus and received Him as our Savior, we had our hearts “circumcised

of sin” the old sinful nature was cut away-removed forever; sins that were past, present

and future=GRACE!

➢ The cutting away, or circumcision in our lesson today, was not something that could be

done by man; it was not a physical procedure, it could only be done by the death of Jesus

on the cross, not by works of any man, but total faith in Jesus

➢ Jesus performed a spiritual circumcision-the cutting away of our sinful nature.

➢ Being buried with Christ when we were baptized, does not indicate that baptism is the

actual saving of our souls. Baptism is a picture of what Jesus did for us. We accept Jesus

as our Savior by faith, then as an act of obedience, we follow the commands of God’s

Word and become baptized; we are fully immersed in water, and this is a type of picture

of us dying to the old self and being raised to new life in Jesus, a new cleansed person,

our sins have been washed away and we are white as snow.

➢ We were dead in our sins, then God made us alive with Christ and He forgave us of all our

sins. Now we can see with new eyes, things become “Crystal Clear” to us. The truth will

set us free.

What does circumcision mean? Removal of the foreskin of the male genital organ, whether for religious reasons or as a purely hygienic measure. Circumcision was practiced in the ancient.

Paul shared throughout his ministry that, while circumcision was of great value for the old covenant, it carried no significance for the "covenants of promise" ( Eph 2:12 ). What was fundamentally important in God's sight was being a "new creation" ( Gal 6:15 ) and keeping God's commandments ( 1 Cor 7:19 ), apart from which circumcision or uncircumcision are meaningless, and allowing faith to work through love ( Gal 5:6 ).

Paul taught resolutely that, in the new covenant, salvation came by grace and faith, not works ( Eph 2:8 ). For the believer, circumcision or the lack of it was a matter of total indifference. What really counted was the faith and obedience that have always characterized covenants between God and humankind.

What does covenant mean? An agreement to do or not do a particular thing; A pact or binding agreement between two or more parties.

66

Day #19

“All Charges have been canceled”

Colossians 2:14-15

14 He canceled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross. 15

In this way, he disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by his

victory over them on the cross.

➢ Jesus canceled, wiped out, demolished, all our sins and charges satan brought against us.

➢ Jesus died on the cross to wipe out all our sins, past, present, future.

➢ Jesus disarmed and beat the devil and sent him to hell where he belongs along with all

his evil angels.

➢ Jesus publicly put to shame satan.

➢ Jesus gives us victory because of what He did on the cross.

➢ Thank You Jesus!!!!!! Words can’t fill all the pages on earth, about the price you paid for

my sins. I am heaven bound

Day #20

“Judge NOT!”- Colossians 2:16-17

16 So don't let anyone condemn (judge) you for what you eat or drink, or for not celebrating

certain holy days or new moon ceremonies or Sabbaths. 17 For these rules are only shadows of

the reality yet to come. And Christ himself is that reality. Message Version: So, don’t put up with

anyone pressuring you in details of diet, worship services, or holy days. All those things are mere

shadows cast before what was to come; the substance is Christ.

➢ Judge not lest ye be judged.

➢ Mercy Triumphs over judgement.

➢ Forgive one another and Jesus forgives us.

➢ Don’t inflict, impose, or push your convictions on others.

➢ Different denominations-different worship styles.

➢ Just because Jesus has convicted you of a sin in your life, does not mean that is the same

sin being dealt with in your sister; God deals with each of us differently and in His time

frame, not ours. Pray for others.

➢ Once you know Jesus as your personal Savior, don’t get under bondage or back under the

law of the old testament. We are under grace not law; (grace is not a license to sin)

although we all know we need to obey laws and abide by rules, we are not to do so with

an attitude of bondage and legalism, but mercy.

➢ God set laws in motion in the old testament, before we had Jesus to help keep order,

thank God for Jesus and GRACE!

Page 67: The Book of Colossians Life Application Bible Study

67

Day #21

Colossians 2:18-19

18 Don't let anyone condemn you by insisting on pious self-denial or the worship of angels,

saying they have had visions about these things. Their sinful minds have made them proud, 19

and they are not connected to Christ, the head of the body. For he holds the whole body

together with its joints and ligaments, and it grows as God nourishes it.

➢ Don’t allow anyone’s comments, judgements, ideas, or convictions put you under

condemnation; Jesus is our judge, we are accountable to Him, not man.

I never finished posting this onto my website. Originally, I just read,

prayed and journaled my thoughts and was posting them onto my

website, which at the time was early every morning before I went to

work, in San Antonio Texas.

I have been retired 2 ½ years now, (1-2020) and I have come back to

study this book; share, teach, and post it on my website. Thankful for all

Jesus has done for me. He is awesome!
