What IS ?

Rainforests are incredibly rich in biodiversity. From the charismatic orangutan, to spectacular birds, to leopards and jungle tigers and elephants. But, there are also thousands of species found in rainforests that don’t make the headlines. Many people may not even know that they exist. From fishes, to birds, to frogs, to butterflies to plants; all equally important in supporting a thriving eco-system.

Not everyone will be fortunate to experience the wonders of these tropical habitats, but Rainforest: Live will take

advantage of the power of social media to take the beauty of the rainforest to people in all corners of the globe.

Rainforest: Live is a day of social media activity bringing people live wildlife sightings from rainforests around the world. This annual event is designed to give people a glimpse into what it’s like to explore a jungle.

It is hoped that Rainforest: Live will be a reminder of all the treasures found in these diverse and unique habitats, and the reasons they’re worth fighting for.

Our 3 main goals:

1To give people a flavor

of what it’s like to explore a tropical

rainforest2

To share positive messages, against a backdrop of loss,

extinction and deforestation, and

remind people why rainforests are worth

saving

3To drive more

engagement and support for the

organisations taking part

WhenOn 8 June 2017 conservation organisations from around the world will take part in Rainforest: Live. The day reflects the calendar, so will begin at different times depending on the time zone of the organisation’s location.

WHO?

Rainforest: Live is an initiative of the Borneo Nature Foundation, a conservation and research organisation based in Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo. Rainforest: Live was born in 2014 and is now going into its fourth year. This year, we want it to be bigger and better than ever before!

Since Rainforest: Live started 19 conservation organisations have joined from Asia, Africa and South America,

taking it around the world. In 2016, the hashtag #rainforestlive reached over 1.5 million people.

This year we are inviting more than 50 organisations to take part for what we hope will be the best Rainforest: Live ever! Our participants list will grow in the run up to June 8 and you will be kept up to date with the organisations that have signed up for this exciting event.

Past Participants

Participants will post live wildlife sightings, from the rainforest where they work, on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Flickr, Instagram and any other social media platforms using #rainforestlive in all posts.

Storify will be used to pull these posts together from all organisations and social media. All participants are also encouraged to share posts and Tweets from other organisations taking part.

Rainforest: Live is an opportunity for people to interact with you via social media and ask questions about rainforests. Encourage your followers to engage with you and suggest ways that they can help your conservation efforts (for example donate, volunteer, support campaigns). Let’s take people’s interest to the next level and inspire action.

HOW?

No internet signal

in the forest ?

NO PROBLEM !Most rainforests around the world do not have internet signal. But, this is not an issue for Rainforest: Live. If you do manage to get mobile phone signal, the field team can simply send a text message to a member of your team, who is based in a place with a good internet connection, where they can then upload the sighting straight to social media.

If you are unable to produce truly live sightings, photos or sightings captured in the weeks leading up to Rainforest: Live could create a similar effect – giving people a flavor of what it’s like to spend a day in a rainforest. But, sightings that are live are recommended for a realistic experience.

ACTION PLAN

Promotion

Rainforest: Live 2017 will be promoted from April onwards and organisations are encouraged to announce that they are taking part through their own social media, website, e-newsletter and other communication channels.

Borneo Nature Foundation will create a serious of countdown graphics in the run up to the event (40 days, 30 days, 1 week and 1 day) to get people excited, engaged and as a reminder of the date of Rainforest: Live.

Participants can also post blogs exploring the concept of Rainforest: Live. These could consist of stories exploring the philosophy behind the event, detailing the reasons why they are taking part, or focus on the amazing wildlife in the rainforest, or perhaps the growing relationship between technology and conservation.

During May a short promotional video will be released online by Borneo Nature Foundation. The video will capture the excitement of Rainforest: Live and confirm the date.

A press release about Rainforest: Live 2017 will be distributed to Borneo Nature Foundation’s media contacts at the end of May. Organisations are also requested to share the press release with their media contacts to maximize coverage and the release can be edited to suit the needs of the participating organisations.

Social media activity on the day of Rainforest: Live 2017

On the day please use the following platforms to post live (or as close to live as possible) wildlife sightings from your field site(s): Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Flickr, PIN Interest, plus any other social media platforms. The frequency and types of posts will be left to your discretion. Storify will be used to pull together all posts into a single stream throughout the day.

If you have camera traps or drone footage, for example, you may wish to post videos on YouTube, then share the links on other social media channels.

Don’t forget to use the #rainforestlive in all your posts!

Tracking

A hashtag tracker will be used throughout Rainforest: Live. Participating organisations are encouraged to also monitor whether there is any increase in visits to their website, likes/followers on their social media or donations received during the event and for a couple of weeks following. Please send any information or statistics to Borneo Nature Foundation following Rainforest: Live.

Follow up

The fortnight after Rainforest: Live provides opportunity for follow-up social media posts and blogs to reflect on the event. Organisations can use this as an opportunity to encourage more action from their supporters. For example, “If you liked Rainforest: Live 2017 why not ….. donate/volunteer/support ..…” One of the main aims of this event is to inspire people to take action to help protect rainforests. We encourage organisations to make the most of this opportunity, which comes around only once a year.
