The Boy Scout Law from Classic Zig Ziglar

The success of Boy Scouts in our business, educational, religious and political arenas has been firmly established. Let's look at the Scout Law and see whether we can discover its contribution to that success: "A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent."

As a Boy Scout in Yazoo City, Miss., every Thursday night, I stood up with my fellow Scouts and repeated the Scout Law. It really amounted to self-talk, and evidence is clear that your self-talk has a direct bearing on your performance. Because we have to be before we can do and do before we can have, I encourage you to reread aloud the Scout Law right now and ask yourself some questions: "If I were trustworthy, would that enable me to be more successful with my family and in my career? If I were loyal, would that establish job and family stability? If I were helpful, friendly, courteous and kind, would that make me a desirable friend? If I were obedient and cheerful, would that not make me a desirable student, child and employee? And if I were cheerful, would I have more friends? If I were thrifty, wouldn't that give me more security for my future? If I were brave, wouldn't that make me a desirable neighbor, service member, employee, mate and parent? If I were clean physically and morally and avoided drugs and alcohol, wouldn't that improve my chances for success in life? If I were reverent, would that help my own peace of mind as well as my moral and ethical conduct?"

Following the Scout Law sounds like a game plan that would give us all a better chance for success in life — and I mean in every area of life. Think about it. Practice the Scout Law, get your children involved in Scouting, and I'll see you at the top! (For further information, contact Boy Scouts of America)
