Dedication Not long hence, a fine, new Bradley High School

will be built. Within its spacious walls will hum the

wheels of a modern, up-to-date high school.

The new high school will have more fields to con-

quer than ever before, for there will be many new

features and improvements with increasing emphasis

on music, speech and drama.

We, the graduating class of 1946, dedicate this

annual, from the old to the new.

SENIOR CLASS HISTORY • • •

A battalion of sixty-nine privates marched into the halls of Bradley Bour-bonnais Community High School in the fall of 1942.

For our officers we had Herman Falkenhan as lieutenant general, Mary Ann Christensen was colonel, Jean Devaud was major, and Jeanne Reilly was captain. Our commanding officers were Miss Scabcrt and Mr. Arthur.

To get away from the regular rou tine o f du ty we held a class party in the gym. The en tire bat tal ion turned out and every one had a good t ime. By the way that was the only par ty we had while in service.

We rece ived a p ro mo t ion to co rpo ra l an d th e re were s ix ty f i ve o f u s . Ou r

lieutenant general was Herman Falkenhan, colonel was Mary Ann Christensen, major was Charlene Gillespie, and our captain was Jean Devaud. Mr. Starr and Miss Chesko were our commanding officers.

To help raise money for our third year o f service, we sponsored a skating party for the entire army. There was a very good turn out and we were grateful to those who part icipated.

Sergeants we were, and there were now forty-nine left in our bat tal ion. Some of our group have left us and are now serving overseas. That year we had Bonita Earnheart as l ieutenant general , Herman Falkenhan as colonel , Diane Duchene as major, and John McAndrews as captain. Our str ict command:ng officers were Miss Steinbrecher and Mrs. Redlich.

We had a lot of activities this year. Besides the regular routine of duty we worked for our dance. We sold pop, candy, pop corn, peanuts, pencils, and many other articles at the football and basketball games. Many of our fellow friends served on the committies for our dance, which turned out to have been a lot of fun. The banquet and dance was held in the American Legion Home on May 22. 1945.

We have marched into another year of service and there are only twenty-nine of us left in the battalion. We have had twenty leave us for overseas duty. From these -once have lieutenant ratings and higher. Our staff of officers are: lieutenant encral —Herman Falkenhan, colonel—Jean Devaud, major—Naomi Rice. and ur captain is Lucille Hartman. Mr. Walters and Miss Stein brecher are our corn-landing officers.

Our last year of service turned out to be a very interesting one, besides our tontine of duty. We had our pictures taken, ordered our rings, caps and gowns, and worked on the annual. Many from our battalion played on the basketball „earn and did very good for themselves. They took first place in the regional tour-lament. On April fi fteenth the class went to Normal for the day, and skip day tame in May.

After four• years of service, we have received the rating of master sergeants ,nd along with that our discharge. We are again civil ians on this twenty-ninth lay of May in the year of our Lord-1946.

PROPHECY . • •

As the years pass and the year 1950 rolls around one of our former classmates has gotten out the picture albumn of his Senior Classmates of 1946. Just to sec if he could remember them all . As he tries to place each one of them, let 's go along with him.

The first picture in the albumn is of Dolores Spivey, who is now the successful housewife of an ex-Navy man. I hear they reside on a small farm near Bourbonnais. This picture right beside Dolores looks familiar. Of course, it's Norma Bisping. It seems she and Lucille Hartman have co-ownership in a large theatre near the Loop in Chicago. We'll be up to see it sometime girls. Good luck!!!

As we turn the page we come across the photo of Ray Howard. Yes, he is sti ll on the farm and doing a good job of it , we might add. Next to him stands George Pierson. This fellow seems to be an Army officer , and i t is rumored about that he st il l has a certain weakness for red-heads.

Another page is turned and looking squarely at us with that indignant look on his face is—you've guessed it , none other than Harry Wulff. He is one of the bosses at Bradley Factory. (I hear he got his job by his strong abil ity to argue.) On this page we also find Harold Topliff. He has his own garage now and urges us all to please bring our old fenders to him. He has adopted the slogan of, "Harold the .Fender Bender."

As we turn the next leaf we find Bernard Krizan working busi ly over his new musical symphony entit led "Pupshun." I see that Bob Devries is also here on this page. He is the manager of the large bowling alley in Bradley. No doubt you have seen him quite often giving the pin-boys a talking to .

The next page confronts us with a snapshot of Mary Ann Christensen and Charlene Gillespie. They completed modeling school recently and were all set for a brilliant career, which turned out to be the model housewife. Mary Ann is now living in Chicago while Charlene remained faithful to dear old Bradley. Remember how much she used to slam the east side, well, that happens to be where she is living now. On this page also, is pictured a very important man in Bradley. He is Mayor Herman Falkenhan. A very efficient one, I 'm sure.

Another page is turned and with it brings us a picture of the twins, Homer and Harry Martin. Homer, as you know, was voted No. 1 Box Office Favorite and is now playing opposite Verna Vogeltvvitchel in the latest M. G. M. hit, entitled, "The 'Educated Guttersnipe." It is his wavy hair that really puts the picture over. (As a past ime, he resorts to singing.) Harry has not become quite so successful, but because of his ardent love for literature he has taken to writing poetry. (That is, of course, between those trips he is sti ll making to Kankakee.)

By th is pictu re o f the twins i s one of our o ld fr iends Ray King. He now has a f i l l ing stat ion of his own. ( I t seems that la te ly he has found out that gas wil l go a lot farther i f di luted wi th water . )

PROPHECY • • • ( C o n t i n u e d )

The next page holds a picture of Audrey Sperry and Theresa Koplinski . Audrey has the management of a big restaurant in Kankakee. She is doing fine , the last we had heard. Theresa is the manager o f the new skating r ink that has just opened across the street from Audrey's restaurant .

The next page really holds a surprise for al l concerned because it shows Clayton Merillat and i t has been said that he is now the new principal of the recently built High School on the North Road. Diane Duchene is his effic:ent and at tract ive secretary. Another classmate, Jeanne Reil ly, is on the Faculty. She is the Commercial teacher and the Girls ' Physical Education Instructor ( i t 's possible) and enjoys her work a lot.

Another page is turned and Johnny McAndrew's face is revealed. He, as you probably know, i s the propr ietor o f the nices t l i t t le cigar s tore in Brad ley, o f course, that does not say what the back room possesses , things such as poo l tables, e tc . Velma Dean Hasemcyer 's p ic ture is a lso on this enameled p iece of paper. She has her own l i t t l e hatshop in the b ig town of Bradley. The s ign out -s ide her door reads, "Beauti ful Bonnets by Babe."

Beside Babe is a picture of Glenn Wright. He and his family have recently moved to Kankakee so he may be closer to his work, as he has recently been promoted to head drug in the druggist business of a large drug store.

Bob Pilchcr is on the next page. Bob has clone quite well for himself these past four years and he is living with his family on the best street in town. Naomi Rice

is also featured here. Yes, she is now the head waitress at the Country Club, but sometimes participates in the floor show.

Will the turn of another leaf, Danny Searle and Bob Decker are unveiled. Danny has recently signed a contract with "Bright Eyes" Magazine. He features the new "Lash-l i te" mascara. Bob is st i l l in Bradley. Recently he was voted the best and leading play-boy in Kankakee county. (He says that he enjoys hi s work, too.)

The next turn greets us with the cheery smile of Belva Chamness. She, it has been told, is the sole owner of a large factory on the outskirts of Bradley. What she manufactures, they say, is a secret.

Jean Devaud is also on this page. I le is the Art Instructor at the New High School. His pupils just adore him, I 've been told. Cora Evens who quit school , is now engaged in the chain of several of her own drugstores. Charles Ryan is now a Major in the Marine Air Force and real ly looks nifty in that uniform.

Well, the final page of our album is turned and last but not least we find our old friend Jimmy Lake. Jimmy owns and has charge of a shop for Men's Wear located at 10938 Sunnyside Boulevard, in dear old Bradley, Illinois.

This ends our reminiscing of our Senior Classmates of 1946. We are all glad to see, I am sure, that they have become so successful in this cold and cruel world since we last left them four long years ago. We have always had confidence in them and can now say, "I told you so."

THESE ADORABLE SENIORS •

The first picture confronts us with a little baby in a high chair out in the snow. We wonder who it is? ??? The right answer in Naomi Rice.—Next to Naomi is a little girl who hasn't changed one bit, you are right again, "Babe" Hasemeyer.— The third picture on the page is taken by the back door of this girl 's house on the east side. Naturally, it is Diane Duchene.—Below Babe in the crouched position, ready for football is Bob Decker. Even then he has visions of a great football player, incidentually, he still has.—The shy little girl under Naomi's picture is the renowned daughter of one of our hard working men around school, that 's right, it is none other than Belva Chamness.—The baby on the wicker chair all dressed up and displaying a great big smile for the benefit of the photographer is Jeanne Reilly. Wasn't she cute then ????—Now under the picture of Belva is one of our typical farmers in his youth. He is now a city slicker and looks very much the same. If you gave the answer as Bob Pilcher, you were absolutely correct.—The next group of three small pictures contains some of our best glamour boys and girls. Right beneath Belva is Bernard Krizan. His little hat and coat sure are cute.—Belo+• Bernard is a little girl standing up with the aid of some one else who we cannot see on this picture. I think she is having some trouble with her ________ well, we will see if you are sharp enough to get it. She is none other than Charlene Gillespie.—By her is a handsome little hunk of man who is now well known and liked by all. He has shown traits and abilities of leadership. Right again, he is Herman Falkenhan.—The little clown on the box of Good Luck Margarine is still in his natural character. You can always expect a hearty laugh out of him when you pop one of those corny jokes. This is Jean Devaud.—This boy was playing with a teddy bear at this time, but he is also known for his monkey "Alice" who was posted out on the roof and signs of his father's gas station. See now you made me give it away, Ray King is the one.—My, isn't the next one a cute sailor. He has not changed too much so that you can not recognize him by this old picture. Buddy Wulff is the one I am talking about.

SENIOR CLASS HISTORY • • •

(Continued) As far as future plans go, some intend to re-enlist for several more years of

college, some intend to go overseas, a few wil l try their talents in the community and a few others will take their place in society.

After the great sigh of relief at becoming a civilian, we realize there is a great responsibility ahead of us and we have a great part to play in the new post-war world. We hope that in these four years of service, the knowledge that we so unwillingly absorbed, the discipline we so rebelliously received, have helped to fit us in order to take our share of the burdens. Some day we will look back on these four years of service and find that they were the happiest and most care-free we have had for a long time. Lucky people who have appreciated us!!

Th e n i n t h a n n u a l K a n k a k e e V a l l e y C o n fe r e n c e mu s i c f e s t i v a l wa s h e l d i n Momence on Fr iday, March 22 , 1946 , a t the Momence High School Audi tor ium wi th Clarence W. Sawhi l l as guest d i rector o f the band and choruses . He i s the

assistant professor of music and assistant director of concert and mil tary bands at the Universi ty o f I l l inois, he also has the Men's Glee Club wider his direct ion. The schools part icipat ing were Bradley, Chebanse, St . Patr ick of Kankakee, Grant Park, St . Anne, Reddick, Manteno, Momence, and Herscher. All in al l , there was about 490 students who part icipated in the program. The program began promptly at 7:30 and first on the program was the boys' chorus singing, "Put On Your Old Gray Bonnet", the Negro Spiri tual , "Steal Away", 'Roger Young", and the song of "Stouthearted Men". All these songs were welcomed by the audience with great enthusiasm and l iked by al l . The gir ls ' chorus was next and sang the fol lowing numbers: "Now the Day Is Over", "Homing", "Open Our Eves", and the "Ital ian Street Song". On the last song Miss Elaine Mart in of Bradley sang the solo part in the chorus. "All in the Apri l Evening", 'God So Loved the World", and the patr iot ic "Your Land and My Land", and the song "As Torrents in Summer", were presented by the mixed chorus of boys and gir ls total ing about 450. The select ions played by the hand were: "Crosley March", "Student Prince Overture", "A Lit t le Vodka—Russian Mixup", by Shumaker, and Sousa's enjoyable "Manhattan Beach-March", and different phases from Strauss, "Waltz King". Those who at tended from Bradley were: Shirley Book, Betty Bock, Mary Ann Christensen, Dolores Falkenhan, Doris Gifford, Charlene Gil lespie, Jean Gussman, Myrna Herrin , Pat Jones, Peggy Kennedy, Bonnie Kirchner, Shirley McCleary, Ray McGinnis, Rosemary Maneno, Jean Martel l . Elaine Mart in , Mary Lou Meents, Louis Rapp, Jeanne Reil ly, Betty Rit tmanic, Freda Schultz, Marie Str iegel , Bernard Tanner, Doris Van Horn, Floyd Windal , Glenn Ziegle and Bil ly Ziegle. The music director of the Bradley band and Glee Club was Mrs. Carl Hughes .

On May 26 the Glee Club sang the fol lowing songs at the Baccalaureate Services: "Holy, Lord God", by Noble Cain and "I Heard A Forest Praying", by the renowned Peter DeRose. These songs were beautiful ly done by the group of gir ls under the direct ion of Mrs. Carl Hughes. The night finally came when the Seniors say good bye to the many happy days which they wil l leave behind and go out to shift for themselves in the world. At this time, the Glee Club sang "The Green Cathedral", by Carl Hahn and "I Pledge Allegiance To The Flag", by Myrtle M. Bridges with the trumpet obligato being played by a junior, Bil ly Ziegle. The ceremony held at this time was very breathtaking and something that you only see once a year. The seniors were serious for the first t ime in their lives and you could tell that they all hated to leave the school which they went to for so long. All in all, the Glee Club has spent many long hours in the preparation for these two nights and have done an excellent job of it too.

OUR SCHOOL OF FUTURE • • •

The people of our little metropolis, as well as the students of the high school have waited a long time for the starting of the construction of our new high school. Our principal, Mr. Honn, has no definite idea just when the work will start on the new building, although, the football and track layouts have been well on their way to realization. The main delay has been in the shortage and trouble of obtaining vital materials needed for the construction. During this time of anxious wa.ting, blue prints have been made up and have undergone some changes that will, no doubt, make the new school even more modern and artistic. So maybe all this lapse of time has not been wasted.

The new high school will be a big improvement over our present one. It will be modern in design, compact and efficient, and with the capacity of 350. The building, itself, will measure about 65 x 120 feet. Instead of the present system of the study hall there will be a Library-Study Hall and personal equipment will be kept in individual lockers which will be placed on both sides of the main corridors un the first and second floors. The new school will also be organized into departments.. A new attraction for our many Flickerville friends will be the new Agricultural Department. The Science, Manual Training and Agricultural rooms will be located in the basement while the Home Ec. Department will have its own compact rooms near the main entrance. There will be many other classrooms in which there will be held the English, Math, and Social Studies.

Although the new building will be only a little larger than the present one it will be arranged so that the need of a larger building would be unnecessary and an added cost of money to our parents. No doubt, you will all be happy when the men start to work on the foundation of our new school.

The gym will be another remarkable improvement, better than many of the gyms in this area. It will have a combination basketball playing floor, auditorium, and theatre. The basketball floor will be about 84 x 50 feet which will be more than ample room for our future players to take the ball out-of-bounds without stepping on the feet of some poor innocent by-stander. Concrete bleachers with a seating capacity of 2500 will flank the floor with a large stage at . one end and a projection booth at the other. The stage is to have a 40-foot opening, 20-feet deep and almost 2 stories high. It will have the dressing rooms on either side of it with much storage space above them. Under the bleachers, stage, etc., will be an efficient system of showers, rest rooms, and row upon row of lockers for boys and girls alike. The gym will be very modern and beautiful like the school building. And will be respected and taken care of better than the present one we now have. It is hoped that lights will be installed around the football field by time for our next season and a fence is to be put around the whole school area. We have been informed that maybe our present Freshman will be fortunate enough to graduate from the new school if everything goes as planned. We all hope that they will not forget the present standards set up by the students of the high school now and those ahead of us in the past years. Always remember them and our school will keep its place in the upper bracket on good sportsmanship, ability to play hard and to win in sports and any other things that Bradley High is noted for. So come on kids, let 's keep up the old tradition of BHS to our new high school.

SPORTS • • •

Let's go back over Bradley's past season of sports. What do we find? In all

fields of sport the Boilermakers did their best. They have showed good sports-

manship all year.

This year we had one of the best coaching staffs we've ever had at Bradley.

Coach Joe Jepsen, came back to spend another successful year as basketball coach.

Onarga sent us Coach Jack Walters who built a fine hard tackling and blocking

football team. He also built a team that would stick to the rules as well as they.

kept up the hard playing to win.

These teams have shown our sportsmen of the future that fair play and hard

play will always be rewarded ......................................... So let boys of Bradley hold the tradition of

fair play and good sportsmanship for which Bradley has been so well known !

The students and towns people are all hoping that the teams of next year will

try to match or better the record of this year 's teams, and that we will see the same

coaches backing these teams. We hope that the teams and the people will always

show their sportsmanship that has brought Bradley to the top of the list. Students

and alumni, let 's give these teams the support that they need to win.

6—A party of the faculty was given in honor of Mrs. Stewart who is leaving her teaching duties in Bradley. Bradley routed Kankakee in an exciting game at the Armory before an estimated crowd of 1.800 fans. The final score was 48-45. Jimmy Lake was the hero of this game by dumping in a basket in the final and dying minutes of the game. Homer's free throw was the other point. This is the second time this year that Bradley ha defeated Kankakee.

7—Cold wave is still on and the people who had to wait in line last night. sure felt the cold sting of Old Man Winter in his full fury. Some of us were lucky enough to have season passes.

8--Tonight Bradley played Coal City and defeated them again on the home floor.

11—The "alarming" pictures are being taken for the annual. We tried to look our best but we dread to open up the annual.

12—Thanks to Lincoln we have no school today. We should all t ry to meditate at least for a minute to day on the great statesman and emancipator of the slaves.

28—Since Sheldon beat St. Anne we had to play them tonight and won in the last minutes by a score of 37-35. Kankakee. Doors opened at 5:311 and by 6:34 there wasn't a seat to be found in the Armory. Shirley Book has acquired a new name of "Champ". Tense time passed and filially the game began. Time passes and we find Bradley has taken over the lead ever since the second quarter in which it made a big margin and kept the Kays from overpowering them. As the gun sounded, ending the game, we were victorious with the score reading 39-28. The crowd went wild and Capt. Harry received the trophy. We are the Regional Champs ! !

Saturday at last. 26—The Baccalaureate Service was held in the Gym this Sunday evening. 27—The annual school's end feature—the Prom—was held at the K of C ball room.

A delicious banquet was enjoyed in the Gold Room of the Kankakee Hotel. The Seniors are glad that the Juniors could raise so much money. What a treat !

29—The Senior Class graduated this evening. The school year is over. For the Seniors it means that they have reaped the fruits of 12 years of work. Many of them have been at Bradley for all 12 years and it is hard to pull away. For the Juniors it means that they will be treated next year and the advantages of be-ing Seniors will be theirs. The Sophomores can look ahead to an active, eventful year. The Fresh-men need not be called Freshmen anymore and will be one more step toward their goal. But for the Seniors it means that they must face the world, that they are on their own. Good Luck Sen iors !
