November 2014 Shady Oaks hosted its annual Chili Cook Off on Thursday, October 9th. There were five contestants vying for bragging rights this year. Judges for the contest were Residents Mary Nelsen and Peggy Owen, Volunteer Joan Schaffer, and Housekeeping and Laundry Supervisor, Beth Larson. It was a blind contest with the crock pots labeled A through E. Each judge was given a small cup of chili to evaluate. The judges evaluated the color, contents, consistency, and taste. Each judge noted their thoughts and after tasting each batch, ranked the chili based on their personal preferences. As the totals were added up chili C came in first place, chili B in second, chili D and E tied, and chili A was fifth. In the tie-breaker round chili E edged out chili D for third place. This year’s bragging rights go to Physical Therapy Assistant, Jennifer Meyer. Second place went to Maintenance Supervisor, Rob Riat; Third Place to MDS Coordinator, Rachel Seil; Social Services Director, Amy Smith received Honorable Mention and Nurse, Carmen Schrad received participation. WE WISH YOU WELL Shady Oaks provides extensive physical, occupational, and speech therapies. The healthcare team offers training and physical conditioning with a goal to return home safely. This month we were excited to send the following back home and wish them well.

Happy Harvest, everyone! Did you know that our residents retain the same

rights at Shady Oaks as they do in the community? That includes their right to vote! Recently all of our residents were asked their interest in voting, and ballots

were requested for any that wanted to vote. If a resident had not been registered at this address in the past, our Life Enrichment Department took care of all that too. As part of Calhoun County, representatives from the Courthouse came out and provided a “polling area” so that residents felt as if they are actually going out to vote. For the

November 4th Election this year, our voting took place on October 22nd. If you have further questions regarding this process, you may contact either Deb Jones or Amy Smith.

It looks like the remodel project I told you about last month, to include the Jefferson Hall resident rooms, hallway, library, cinema and flooring in the main living room/assisted dining room will begin around the second week in November. This is pending the carpet arriving on time! Remember this will include some asbestos removal and moving of residents from their rooms for a day or so. Please be patient and excuse our mess during this time of construction! I promise it will be worth it when you see the end results J

Again, please note our Resident/Family Feast to be held on Sunday, November 23rd at 11:30am. Invites will be sent out soon and we ask that you please RSVP.

May each of you have a very blessed Thanksgiving! We look forward to seeing you on the 23rd.

~ Jennifer Blair

The overall rule of thumb is to apply for Medicaid immediately. Many people fail to apply for Medicaid when they enter a nursing home and wait until most of their assets are gone. This is a big mistake. To receive maximum Medicaid benefits, married individuals should generally go to the Department of Human Services (DHS) and apply for Medicaid when one spouse enters a nursing home. DHS will decide how many assets each spouse can keep. This will fix the amount of assets the community spouse can keep. All non-exempt resources of the couple are considered to be available to pay nursing home costs, regardless of which spouse owns them. DHS will assign one-half of the non-exempt assets to each spouse, provided the community spouse is assigned a minimum of $24,000 and a maximum of $113,640 (in 2012). DHS will notify the couple that the spouse in the nursing home is not eligible for Medicaid to pay his or her expenses until the spouse in the nursing home has reduced the value of his or her assets to $2,000.

To discuss your personal situation or for assistance with this process, please contact Amy Smith at (712) 464-3106.

Money-Wise: When to Apply for Medicaid Benefits

On October 8th, the Madison residents enjoyed a ride around town to look at the Fall colors. It was a gorgeous Fall day, perfect for being outside. The group started with a tour around the town square taking note of the Fall decorations and flowers along the way.

Driving by the pool, the residents were surprised to see the big hole and construction equipment working away. As they drove by the park, the residents saw Cook, Georgia Wiederin playing with her grandchild and everyone waved!

They noted the Maple trees are starting to turn red and the Ash are turning yellow, a beautiful combination. The bus drove by the homes of several family and team members. Dick Nesbitt especially enjoyed driving by his son Scott’s home. (Scott, you got off easy today...next time they may all drop in for a cup of coffee!)

The bus did stop at Life Enrichment Assistant, Deb Zenor’s home. Though the kittens, Bandit and Beebee, weren’t sure about being on the bus, the cat lovers in

the group enjoyed their short visit. While there, Deb also picked Connell Red apples from one of her trees for the residents to snack on. The next stop was C.N.A., Michelle Vaughn’s home so the dog lovers could get their fix. Her dogs, Nellie (a lab mix) and Pickles (a Boston terrier), love to visit people and had a blast on the bus. Arriving home, the group couldn’t wait to get back to the kitchen so they could cut up their apples and enjoy them with a fresh cup of coffee!

Twelve brave residents boarded the bus October 7th and headed out for parts unknown. Following a leisurely drive through the countryside, the bus arrived at Fort Frenzy, located on the East side of Fort Dodge.

Alli Berger, Fort Frenzy’s Sales Director welcomed us at the door and showed us to one of their four party rooms. Once we were settled with a choice of coffee or water, Alli told us the history behind the facility. Fort Frenzy was an idea that came to life after a few friends looked around Fort Dodge and discovered there were very few family friendly activities. With money donated by lottery winners and private donors, along input from consultants, the plans took shape. There was a naming contest and Fort Frenzy opened for business in November of 2013. With a variety of indoor and outdoor activities, including a toddler room, Fort Frenzy is designed for guests of all ages. Outdoor fun includes: go carts, bumper boats, water wars, and mini golf. Indoor activities include: skating, bumper cars, mini bowling, laser tag, and arcade games.

As we toured the building, everyone thought the mini bowling looked like a lot of fun. The next stop on the tour was the laser tag area. Those wearing white glowed under the black lights of the laser tag room. The skating rink was very large and doubles as an event center. Many of the residents commented on how much fun their grandchildren would have there!

Following a delicious lunch of homemade pizza and pop, the group headed home.
